It's not necessarily that he sounds German, just that he sounds like how a German would speak English to me. There's some instances where if you listen closely his pronunciation becomes very mechanical and precise. It reminds me of some of my university friends who came from Germany.

You have to slow your speech and be concious of the way you pronounce certain words so that's probably what you're hearing. If anything, I would say that he has a standard Irishman abroad accent, with a clear hint of his Kerry-ness creeping into his cadence.

Someone from Sweden where on vacation in England and heard the sing and saw the dance, translated it to Swedish and it became an instant hit here in Sweden. Kinda funny that every Midsummer we sing and dance a song that from the beginning was made to make fun of the French. :P
