If you want to get this type of material without buying a bunch of coffee search for "Aluminum Shim Stock" and whatever thickness you want.

@@Miscast Bunnings sells rolls of aluminium flashing in their plumbing / roofing sections; I suspect the thinnest is still a bit thicker than your coffee tin stuff - but I use it all the time for various things, tents, flags, cloaks, even belts as you can cut it into thin strips with scissors.
The roll coast about $10-15 and will last me several life times, even after giving some away to friends.

You know what's even better than balsa? The wood with which they package Brie cheese. Lidl sell a really good Brie - Brie de Meaux - and along each side of the wedge there is wooden packaging. This is real wood, approx 30 mm X 150mm and possibly less than 1mm thick. The Brie is also excellent if you let it mature in the fridge for a week.

"Spalting" is the effect on the wood you were trying to convey.
    Wiki:
Spalting is any form of wood coloration caused by fungi. Although primarily found in dead trees, spalting can also occur in living trees under stress. Although spalting can cause weight loss and strength loss in the wood, the unique coloration and patterns of spalted wood are sought by woodworkers.
