    Your channel feels just like watching a really well-produced cooking channel but I don't care what I eat so instead I watch how to make miniature wargame scenery.

    To prevent foam board bases from warping one good trick is to get the very thin (usually brown) wide parcel tape and apply this on the UNDERSIDE first. The tape is very resistant to tension and basically prevents the ends and sides from warping upwards.

    • @Miscast
      @Miscast  4 роки тому

      That's a new one, thanks!! Do you remove the tape at any point?

    • @barryslemmings31
      @barryslemmings31 4 роки тому

      Nooo! The tape remains on permanently in case of further warp-age. Your central heating might have a long term effect. If the PVC tape is too slippery on your table you could add a little masking tape as well.

    I dig your dry-brushing technique and textures throughout a composition. You add a lot of character and detail without sacrificing too much playable space as the DM. This one was lovely.

    I would advise smaller bits for a modular graveyard. Make 4 or 5 parts that you can move around. It also helps with warping

    The biggest problem I find with terrain, is that everything still looks very flat and dark. This is fairly common in some of your builds and another UA-camr called Blackmagiccraft I think. It seems a lot of the paint work relies on a black undercoat and then JUST drybrushing on darker colours. I understand if you wanted to set in a nightime scene, but trees aren't a deep black-brown colour, and buildings aren't black-grey with splotches of green on the roofing, using grey drybrush to bring out any bumps. Similarly, too often buildings are coated in sand to give texture but this, due to scale, makes them look like they're covered in pebbles, rather than a fine gritted surface, and doesn't really blend too well. Once you use things like sand, stones etc, their scale is instantly heightened, and suddenly sand becomes rocks, and fish tank pebbles become large 1 foot wide stones when compared to actual scale.

    • @Miscast
      @Miscast  4 роки тому

      It's important to remember neither Black Magic Craft or I arent going for realism, what were creating is implied detail and painting in intentionally stylised way. It's very hard to create accurate scale scenes from easy accessible materials and accessible budgets so we go for stylised instead. I think quick, dirty and accessible how how we enjoy making stuff too because we use them for fantasy wargaming and dungeons and dragons.
      More recently I've tried to adopt more scale modelling techniques in my builds which adds a lot but at the end of the day if you want scale realism Luke Towan, Real Terrain Hobbies and Luke APS are the guys you want to watch.

    Ok just found your channel yesterday and I’ve finished watching all your videos. This is amazing stuff. I’m feeling inspired. I like to craft terrain but I always feel intimidated and don’t know where to start. I love seeing how your projects come together and you make it seem so easy. Im going to make some Ruins today using Eva foam. I’ve got piles of the stuff in my basement not being used! Keep it up. I love the “Casey Neistat” editing style, it adds a fresh look to the terrain building community.

    I like the overall look to this. It has inspired me and I plan to create a graveyard in the next few days. Though mine will be slightly different as i will use granny grating to create a wrought iron fence. One thing this might be interesting would be to get a bunch of the youtube terrain creators to do a challenge building a Aztec piece. Maybe Miniac (whom you have worked with,) Black Magic Craft, Goobertown, Luke Aps, Wyloch, real terrain hobbies, Eric's hobby Workshop, and Bard's craft ... get Squidmar to judge the end result. Frankly, each of you have a different take on how you create terrain pieces and your process is fascinating and it would be amazing to see how each of you achieve the same goal, regardless of which Squidmar would say if the best!

      Jonathan Hardman I was thinking about doing a follow up to my walls and barricades tutorial covering things like tank tracks, barbed wire, sandbags ect. What do you think?

    • @Skull-Render
      @Skull-Render 6 років тому

      That sounds like a great idea. Barbed wire is easy to make. I use some thin wire, fold a length in half and then twist it into a double helix. Any wire will do and it gives a really good effect. For Sand bags you could use a putty or green stuff to sculpt them. There's a video of a guy in the UK who shows how to do sand bags in this way, and he can produce a lot at once. I'm interested to see what your next video would be like.

Great techniques you've mentioned, hopefully I can bring something new to the table you might not have thought of or some alternatives to the techniques you're familiar with. Is that foam from bunnings? What ive got is knauf brand, the same pale yellow colour. Mine is really not as good as what ive seen other youtubers use. When engraving it with a pen it tears instead of indents (like if i draw a line theres lots of tiny splits across the line) and very easily tears instead of cuts when using a knife. Idk if mine has gone bad or is a bad batch or if im doing it wrong or if i should just find something else... I see youtubers draw bricks on xps and texture it no problem and looks perfect and mine is almost useless for that.

      Thanks you! More on the way! Im from a small town, so I buy a lot online and I buy from all sorts of places, but mostly random eBay sellers. For models and paint I don't really have any particular loyalty to any retailers, just whoever has what I want in stock when I google it.
      If you're in Aus and looking for XPS foam, I found mine at Bunnings, you can ask to order it in if they don't stock it.
      For foamboard I buy it at Kmart for $5 a sheet.
      For 2 part epoxy I buy it bundles of 5 or 10 on eBay for bulk discount.
      For everything else I just go to the dollar store, for cheap paint, brushes and super glue.
      Hope that helps :)
