- Turn old junk into new tools. Great project for old junk parts laying around the shop. Let me know of some of the neat tools you've built!
Strap wrenches are great to have in your toolbox. It won't be the sort of tool you use on a daily or even regular basis, but it’s the sort of tool that can get you out of a sticky situation really quick. Great for large round or odd shaped items with no way to grip them.

I used an old Timing Belt, 13/16" spark plug socket and a small 8mm socket.

Excellent idea, will need to make myself one. I have a couple 5 gallon buckets filled with old sockets, wrenches, etc. Great for making “tight spot” tools if a regular tool won’t fit into an area.
Japan/Taiwan tools are great for cutting up and making one off tools.

Great video, I have a strap wrench for big Caterpillar filters made from an old seat belt. Works great, it will get the tightest ones off!!

I picked them up years ago and they sat as I didn't understand the usefulness. I use them all the time now.

This belt has been starring at me for nearly a year. I'm glad I was able to repurpose it.

Many times I need just such a tool. Some years back, I had a machine delivered on a pallet and the shipper used these really strong ratchet tie downs, the 1 inch wide kind. They were different. they had a hex head on them, around 9/16", instead of the usual stamped steel lever like on the Walmart specials out there. I have use them for everything from re inflating a stubborn tractor tire to taking off oil filters.
Very neat. I can't say I've seen ones with a Hex head for the ratcheting mechanism.
Great video and just the homemade tool that I needed for my sized engine 😀 I can rotate the engine clockwise with the crankshaft bolt or bump engine with the starter. But I can't make it go counter clockwise, as it will just unscrew the crankshaft bolt. Your 🔧 is just the ticket to get the grab and tourqe on the pulley so the engine can be rocked in reverse. A old v-belt can also be cut,and fill in the groves to add stability to the v belt pulley.
I seriously like your ingenuity! You do come up with some awesome ideas. I've actually had some good luck with the conventional rubber strap and did have to replace it once due to ripping after years of use. It's helped to get me out of a couple binds. Yours, however, should hold up even better, last longer, etc. Thanks for sharing your ideas!
I think they're an invaluable tool. For most stuff my store bought ones work fine but I always find a stubborn job that's pretty rough on them. Each time I've broken one I notice there are less than half a dozen nylon reinforcing fibers where a timing belt will have over a dozen. I hope this will work out better on those tough jobs.

Nice custom tool ....love your creations! One big use I can use for this is to turn some big pier pipe that has an auger on the end which screws down into the river bed or out when the time comes, the only thing I need is more leverage. I was using a big HF alumuminum pipe wrench until the casting on the pipe wrench broke .....thanks for the vid :)

tHAT is a FINE idea and the washer welded on will keep the socket from spreading! I use old 'V' belts for slings for lifting stuff all the time. Thanks, Pal!
I'm amazed how much a fan V belt can hold. I bought the front frame and suspension section off a 70's Ford truck years ago from a wrecking yard. They lifted the entire 500+lb chunk into the bed of my truck all dangling from a single used V belt.
I believe it! I hang my 5665 GRavely with a kidney mower on the front of it with no problem but just enough to work on it. I've just got about a 7 foot ceiling and a strap hoist hung from that but it sure helps out the old back! And a V-belt makes a strong and quick sling. I usually stand riders on one end or the other instead of doing like a buddy of mine said and crawling around like a serpent and the belts work and don't gouge chunks out.

That is a good tool project to make !!!..I lost my oil filter wrench for my truck and used a ratchet strap and had about a foot hanging out to wrap around my hand a pulled on it

Awesome job, I need something like that to hold my harmonic balancer still while I torque the center bolt (135 ft lb), I might attempt to make a tool like this, thanks for sharing the idea.
That's always fun trying to torque the harmonic balancer bolt. I had the harmonic balancer fall off my '78 Ford Truck years ago on the freeway. The bolt wasn't properly torqued(not by me). Luckily the bolt and balancer stayed in the engine bay.

Good idea. If you used just a section of a cogged timing belt with the store bought strap wrench, you would probably get a better grip than the store bought wrench alone.

Wow that's a better design than the commercial ones
The commercial ones use cheap rubber belts that stretch, slip and break easily. They're fine for super light duty things but those projects I can generally just grab what ever I'm working on by hand and hold it.
I took a weed killer pump and turned it into a tire pump. SUPER EASY and unlike a bike pump, this can store air and dang neer indestructible
I have been doing this for many years . Makeing tools out of junk in the garage. I would love to share but I don't know how post pictures and make vids.I have many one of a kind tools that are not available in stores.
I would love to see your collection! I love this kind of stuff and also have made a number of my own homemade tools! Good old fashioned American ingenuity!! (That's getting to be a thing of the past though it seems, unfortunately...)

Dang it Moe !!!! That was too easy !! I expected 47 and a half pieces and 24 machinists tools to be used !! LOL !!! I LIKE IT !! Now tell me please, did you NOT turn the belt inside out because the "teeth" grip better than the smooth side? Sorry, but that question was driving me crazy when I saw you grind the teeth off the belt. Another great job Moe ! Thank you for sharing !
I had other plans but figured it should be simple and functional. It can be flipped inside out at it sits and I can use the cogged or smooth side. I figured the teeth would bite in a little better.

I'm using the wife's computer,My late father made a oil filter wrench with a old seat belt instead of the timing belt.But still nice to see this idea works.
Very Neat.
Those strap wrenches are handy for unloosening mayo lids and such around the kitchen. The only ones I have ever found that were remotely worth a damn are professional plumbers ones that they use on the chrome bathtub fittings so they don't gall & scratch them up. This is an extremely useful project idea.

I can flip it inside out with it all together and use both sides as it sits right now. I want to try out a slightly different design with a serpentine fan belt.

Great idea! Now get another belt, and cut it, and just put it in that big black strap wrench handle. I hate the 'straps' they put in those. I have broken every single one I have ever used!

Years ago, I had a German made car that required metric hex drive (allen wrench type) tools to work on it. So I found some metric hex head bolts and welded them into some inexpensive (cheap, old, used, junk) sockets I had. Worked great! Didn't have to spend $$ on a set of Metric hex bit sockets!

I wonder if when using your chain wrench, if worried about scratching, if you put an old belt between the chain and the item if it would still do the job and not scratch/distort?
I think the edges of the chain could still dig right into whatever rubber you would put between it and the part due to the forces at hand. It might reduce damage to the part but it would probably ruin the padding after enough uses. Leather might hold up for something like that but you'd still have the extra alignment of yet another thing in potentially tight spaces

I recently made a caliper tool to wind back my daughter's rear brakes from a mini breaker bar scrap slug of metal and a piece of allthread I had in the scrapbin
It also doubled as a sink strainer tool so I saved myself 8 dollars there as well :)

This is a good DIY tool.. But the thing is it might be not appropriate to fit in tight places. i think using a smaller belt will be better for things like oil filters.
That's the great thing about making your own tools; you can make them exactly for what fits your specific needs.
I wonder if an oxygen sensor socket would work. They already have a slot cut in. I think.

I only had to remove a small portion of teeth. I want them on the inside to do the gripping and be sacrificial against sharp edges.
I was hoping you where going to make it like your chain one from the video before but using this sturdy toothed belt which I think would make it a lot less clunky when handling, plus as you also mentioned, non-marring! Come on 65, might you consider version 3.0?!
Timing belts aren't super common for people to have laying around so I planned on making a different version with a standard serpentine fan belt.

In case of a pipe, where length is closed, it won't work. You need to design a strap wrench which has open end.

Because it would take more work to adapt it to my plastic handled strap wrench than to just make this.
