Not even surprised. I know a man who had one of these with a little over 900k miles. 2 liter, 5 speed manual. Rust killed it for a finish but with that mileage, he got his moneys worth. Said it was the best car he ever owned and actually misses it. He said when it clocked 200k he was considering changing cars. Then 300 and 400 and so on until it gave up the ghost. Other than the rust it was still a very solid car mechanically. Always started for him
Have owned a 2000 Honda Accord EX 2.3L 4 cylinder since 2006. Currently has 225k miles with original motor, alternator, and starter. Has never overheated and starts everytime. Super easy to work on and love the time where options were limited. Such a reliable vehicle and fun to drive.
Had one of these, remember this competed heavily with the Camry. When the ‘97 Camry came out, there was a wait to see Honda’s response, everybody had these. Good ol’ days.
My grandma still has her 99 ex v6. It’s super reliable, has plenty of power, it’s definitely fun to drive. She hardly drives as well, and every time it starts up perfectly and purrs haha! She says it’s mine when she feels like she can’t safely drive anymore, which is great because I learned to drive in it. It’s definitely staying in our family. Super low mileage too since she doesn’t drive much anymore.
Being born in '89, I've ridden in and driven so many of this gen, as all my friends, teachers, etc had one. I remember every gen of Accord being EVERYWHERE over the years, one time in 2012 I pulled up to an intersection next to another 1990 Accord in my own, then across the street there was two other 4th gens at the light next to each other and I remember thinking "only in an Accord". We've owned every generation from '86 - '02. I wish we were able to keep the third generation, that one was special. After owning them all it's without question that the highest quality Accord was the 4th gen and they were the most striking. 5th gen improved on the 4th gen in some ways but took fair size a step back in overall quality and character despite being incrementally more refined, and the 6th gen was a bit more refined but by then it had gained a lot of weight and there was SIGNIFICANT cheapening in design, character, and materials then. Also in the reliability of the automatic transmissions. To date I still have a 4th and 5th gen EX's, both well over 300k miles. Our '02 was also a SE model in that pretty nice fire pepper red, as Honda called it. 276k miles and all original when we gave it away to a family member, it's still kicking!
Wow - I loved reading this. My sisters both have Accords and I have a Civic - it's so weird how different Hondas from the past seem. And though I love my Civic, I sometimes dream about driving a 4th gen Accord (like Million Mile Joe) :)

I had a 1998 2.3L Accord. Bought it from a no credit car dealer after Hurricane Sandy took away my mint condition 2003 Accord back in 2012. I was in college and I just needed a car. Even with only 73k miles on the odometer, that 1998's transmission slipped and jerked like crazy. It was obvious why the previous owner sold it. Eventually at 76k it gave out all together. Great car otherwise, to this day I have yet to find a more comfortable driver's seat. It even had the Honda 6 disk CD Changer in the trunk. Winded up selling it to a neighbor, and he had it for around 4 years. I saw him on the road with it countless times. Recently I purchased a 2022 Honda Civic. It reminds me so much of my 1998 Accord. The perfect size sedan.
a friend of mine's Dad had like a 1992 Honda Accord with a 6 disc changer also. Was that an option from the dealer? My buddy always made a big production out of loading up the 6 cd's we could switch between before heading out to the movies or wherever. We have three of these in the family. Little brothers 99 manual LX is at 310k, my 99 EX at 262k, and my mom's 98 LX auto somewhere in the 180k range with a fresh repaint!
Great review! :-) I owned the same one- yes, same color in Grandpa Gold about ten years ago. A clump of granite is less reliable than these cars hey.... I got rid of mine with about 215,000km (134,000 miles) and it was just getting started. All of the motor seals were tight as a drum, it didn't leak or weep a drop of oil, my mechanic simply raved about it. In fact, I've become so disillusioned with modern day cars simply being too "techy" , that last week I went and bought another one. It too has about 200,000km on it and honestly it'll probably do double this mileage. Best Accord Honda ever made in my opinion.
My parents had a 2000 Accord V6 that I inherited, kept that until 2020..had 260,000 miles on it, had less repairs in 20 years than my new suv has had in 2. My parents also had a 1987 accord that was manual, crank windows, and brown cloth seats, kept that car until 2000.
my dad had a 1998 model with a leather interior. loved the interior on that car! it was so comfy and I was a kid then so I would just lay down on the seats and sleep
I had one that i got up to 375k. One of the exhaust valves got stuck open. It still got me home. From LA to Phoenix! I sold it off to a dude for $300, maybe its still running today...
My grandparents had a '99 EX I think it was, it was in Heather Mist. Great car. Wish they still had it. Traded it in 2002 on a 2002 Camry XLE 4 cylinder.
I have one of these in green. Family friend got it from her aunt(original owner) in 2018. At that time it only had 85k miles on it. Our friend drove it a bit hard for a year and half and blew the head gasket. She parked it, bought a new car left it parked in her yard. The interior was immaculate. The body was ok, but in better shape than 99% of the ones on the street. She was going to junk it and I offered to match whatever the junk yard was going to give. They were only offering $200. The offer was too low so she called and said "If you can tow off my yard, its your." It had 115k miles on it when I got it. To date I have spent about $2500 in repairs and parts replacement. Every issue I have had was due to wear and tear. Not a big deal because parts are cheap and there's enough room in the engine bay to do the work yourself. Very reliable, cheap to fix and I don't see myself parting with it anytime soon.
I have owned my 2002 LSI 2.3 for over 7 years and love it!! I have had 5 accords, but she is the best one. Only had 14000 kms onn the clock, had 95,000 when I bought her. Only major problem was had the petrol tanks flushed and injectors taken out and cleaned with some new parts and injector rubbers. Perfect size car for my needs.
I have a 98 accord coupe lx 5 spd (cg2), first year of the sixth gen. With the f23a1 engine that makes 150 hp. I noticed this one is probably the f23a4 (since it has the green top valve cover (the ulev system). The f23a4 makes less power (around 138) but gets a bit better mpgs. You can tell if a 6th gen has the f23a1 because it will say vtec kinda like how the h22 with vtec does (except the f series is sohc of course). Definitely a fun car for sure, mine has been abused by previous owners with cheap mods and such. However I have been putting some better mods and fixing it up making it actually look decent. I definitely love this gen.
Just bought an 02 v6 with 121k miles. It has leather seats, wood accents, sunroof. Until seeing this video, i never knew it was a special edition. I traded it for a standard corolla with 140k miles so my wife can learn in an automatic. Same color as the one in this video. Honestly i love it. And she does too.
I have an accord with 230,000 miles on the clock. Zero gearbox or engine troubles. 1.8 petrol. Yea it drank petrol and oil for the fun of doing it for 20 years but it kept going. In the full 25 years of that cars existence the engine was never opened. Best car that has ever been in my family. Its outlived many other cars that simply passed through the family. Interior is pure 90s style, cloth but near immaculate bar 1 thumbnail size blemish on the drivers seat. 5 speed manual box which had its only clutch replacement at 209,000 miles. Enough of that, i recon these cars were very under appreciated, and so they may be a future classic. Theyre not a rolls royce, theyre not a race car, theyre reliable and they have this certain tweak on cars that you dont see today. The perfect mix of quality, modernisation and olschool all in the 1 package. Talking as a european honda accord owners perspective btw. Has been the best car in my family by a long shot. Absolutely love the thing
My first car was a '99 in Raisin Pearl (sounds like a lame color, but it was actually a nice dark grey color). When I bought it with 306k km (190k miles), it had a subwoofer setup and a Magnaflow exhaust that the owner claimed to have come off of a Ram 3500. That car was so badass.
Great car. Great styling. One expensive problem. This generation had bad tranny’s!!! Buyer beware. This low mileage minty example will fail. It’s a given. Say goodbye to $3,000-$4,000 dollars to fix the transmission.
Usually they are much cheaper because the car is so old. Many people I know still drive them as high school/college cars. A local mechanic can replace one for about $1100-$1500. A pretty good price when the rest of the car is in good shape, blows cold air, and is well optioned. These engines and the physical car itself is excellent so its worth the price of repair. Not many 18+ year old cars are worth a transmission replacement.
My parents had the 1998 Accord V6 and my friend's parents had the 2.3. The V6 was so much more luxurious, awesome leather seats, fake wood trims on the dash, automatic climate control. Was an amazing car. As amazingly reliable as the 3.0v6 and the 2.3 engines were... the transmission on the V6 would die by 120 000 to 150 000km... it was a weak transmission and certainly didn't last when abused. My parents also had a 1998 Acura CL 3.0 Both those cars sharing the same transmission, both those cars had the transmission replaced around 130000km. The accord, it was when my brother drove it. The CL, was after my dad sold it to a friend of mine so yea, both transmissions failed under abuse.
You gotta baby the automatic transmissions in these tho.. was a big flaw with this 6th gen accord. Especially the V6 which I believe only came auto as well. I have a 99 LX with a used f23a at 70k miles I’m it. Original body and trans at 123k but my trans just gave out..after a year of owning it it was evident the engine blew a head gasket and previous owner had neglected it. Got it at 98k miles. Now it sits. Again. Anyways Manuals will easily get hundreds of thousands of miles if maintained as these engines were great. Only other flaw with these was the clear coat on the paint.
I've had 4 of these 6th gen Accords all manual. Things to look out for, first and foremost the automatics are garbage so get a manual. Second oil consumption. Third there is an electrical issue that causes the car to shut down while driving, Honda says it's the ignition switch but it's more than that. Now the good about the car in sedan form is very practical, comfortable, simple design, easy ergonomics, good handling and decent fuel economy. In the coupe it handles better because of a different suspension setup, seats are a little more bolstered, looks sporty and still pretty practical and I love the nsx inspired taillights. I've had 2 sedans and 2 coupes but again all manual.
I know that electrical issue. It's the sensor down behind the main crankshaft pulley. Code would always come up as ig switch or distributor then I found the culprit. Other than that solid cars. And totally agree solid cars but avoid the autos. Or have a couple handy auto trans in stock. They are cheap.
@@pinut187 Yes the automatic is still an issue in the 5th gen. When test driving it do these three things, check wide open throttle up to 70mph get on the highway, check gradual throttle in town up to 45mph and check it under 3/4 throttle at 55-60 mph. What you are checking for is if the gears al slipping between shifts. Get the Carfax for the vehicle as the transmission might have already been replaced, how many miles does this coupe have, and how much is it? Things to consider as a replacement of an automatic will run you from $1,500 if you are doing it yourself up to $3,500 at a shop. If you can find on with manual even better.
The sedan would handle even better than the coupe had the car came factory with the Acura TL strut bar of this generation. I upgraded mine night and day difference.
Those are peppy af. My wife got one as temporary transportation with 240k miles and it was kinda quick. It ran like a new car till she totaled it. If you can get one a a good price they are fun and reliable.
I currently drive an 01 accord with almost 200k miles, and other than burning some oil and the transmission jumping between first and second, it’s a great car and I have zero complaints about it. I liked my 05 Camry xle v6 more, but this things very very reliable and well built.
yes the 2000s ( being born in 96 ) i remember 80s cars 90s cars and 2000s cars. I have a 2000 Clk 320 W208. 2004 W203 and my pride n joy 2004 w211 BUT i do love this gen Honda :)
I absolutely do not like the bodystyle of this gen of Accord's in the US, but as for the ones in EU, I absolutely love them. The rear looks so much proper, so much better conceived in those.
Fantastic review!! Do you have a review of the Camry of this era? The 1997-2001? I just bought one, it was between this and the Camry. I'd love to compare them! Thank you! 🙏
To be fair, Honda's CVTs are towards the more reliable end in the CVT realm, and their 10AT are far more reliable than their 5AT from the 2000s and 6AT and 9AT from the 2010s.
One detail he left out is. Not only are the new hondas not as reliable, but thier also not as sporty either.the new accord no longer offers a v6 or a turbo 4 cylinder like in previous generations. If you want a performance version you have to buy a manual si type r civic or integra, tlx.but not everyone can drive manual or afford an acura
Still drive a 93, same color. I must say I think the styling was better in the 90s than the early 2000s but otherwise pretty much the same car as far as motor and trans.
U still own and drive my 02 Accord LX it has 227K original miles. The paint needs to be completely redone, the interior is fantastic the driver seat needs to be repacked but the fabric is very clean. I'm on my second clutch rebuild. The cylinder head needs to be replaced. And the original Honda cat needs to be replaced. I agree 98 02 is Hondas Crown jewel of build quality and reliability. Save for the very poor paint across the vehicle spread of Honda at this time. Water based clear coat fails fast.
Had a 1997 SE which I bought new. Is it possible to like a car and yet admit it was nothing that special? Mine was reliable but always seemed a bit underpowered, seats were hard (my back killed me after a couple hours riding in it) and in most ways was fairly unspectacular. Good car it was, but these things do take on a bit of mythical hyperbole.
"Peak of Honda reliability" but transmission issues on it and the Acura variants.. the generation or two or three before this was the peak. Same way my Subaru had NOTHING to do with G.M. it was all Fuji Heavy Industries and made in Indiana.
I have a 2000 Honda Accord with 220,000 mi and still runs awesome. I wouldn't be surprised if it hits 500,000mi. It also has the 2.3 with an auto. It's the DX so nothing really special. No cruise control no electronic windows no mirror heater and mirrors not powered.

Only major problem was had the petrol tanks flushed and injectors taken out and cleaned with some new parts and injector rubbers. Perfect size car for my needs.
I bought one 3 years ago with 41,000 miles. Still have it 70,000
I have a 98 accord coupe lx 5 spd (cg2), first year of the sixth gen.
If you're going to get one of these, get a manual version, they are so much fun for barely any power.
aside from the fact that this generation had god awful automatics

My first car was a '99 in Raisin Pearl (sounds like a lame color, but it was actually a nice dark grey color). When I bought it with 306k km (190k miles), it had a subwoofer setup and a Magnaflow exhaust that the owner claimed to have come off of a Ram 3500. That car was so badass.
i bought a 99 accord w 284,000 miles at a junkyard and was all it needed to drive was a new battery and now it runs like a clock
My first car was a 5spd mt 99 accord and I loved it
Own oneeeeee. I wanna keep it foreverrrrrrr.
i jus picked one up for a winter beater. 376 thousand miles. drives like its new
My first car was a 2001 2.3L EX. Super stoked it passes the BFBT!
If you have the 4 cylinder, it shouldn't be much of a problem. The V6 engines are the culprits, they always are, even today.
My 93 still has original trans, but if it goes I am converting it to manual
Casual Observer those ones didn’t have that issue luckily
Mine has almost 200k miles and jumps from first to second, but still drives just fine other than that and burning a little oil
My parents also had a 1998 Acura CL 3.0
Both those cars sharing the same transmission, both those cars had the transmission replaced around 130000km.
The accord, it was when my brother drove it.
The CL, was after my dad sold it to a friend of mine so yea, both transmissions failed under abuse.
I got a 2000 Honda accord ISNT worth a pack of cigarettes but works great!!! Still got original cc, engine & transmission:)
2017 Civic coup. 1.5T. 187,000 miles and counting. No CVT or oiling issues. Car pulls strong every time i merge on the highway
I think you could get coupe V6 with manuals.
That's the first pass on the big friggin bottle test I've seen. Plus it comes on a car I'm looking to purchase. Good times!
Do you know if the 5th gen automatics are also bad? Looking for a 5th gen coupe automatic now.
@@everzamora9031 Thank you for letting me know what causes the electrical issue, very helpful.
The sedan would handle even better than the coupe had the car came factory with the Acura TL strut bar of this generation. I upgraded mine night and day difference.
I DD a 2002 accord special edition with about 191k miles..still going strong!
I grew up in a 97 accord and I really miss it 😢
Those are peppy af. My wife got one as temporary transportation with 240k miles and it was kinda quick. It ran like a new car till she totaled it. If you can get one a a good price they are fun and reliable.
I just bought this with 180k miles
Still got 150k+ with good care maintenance
Had to sell that exact model and color to move abroad, miss that car!!
I currently drive an 01 accord with almost 200k miles, and other than burning some oil and the transmission jumping between first and second, it’s a great car and I have zero complaints about it. I liked my 05 Camry xle v6 more, but this things very very reliable and well built.
My mom had a 1996 Honda Accord, it was a base model, and I think the only options it had were cruse control and automatic climate control.
Excellent video
I have a 99 manual whit 230 mi and runs very good
The best looking accord
I sold my 2000 accord last year I still miss it
yes the 2000s ( being born in 96 ) i remember 80s cars 90s cars and 2000s cars. I have a 2000 Clk 320 W208. 2004 W203 and my pride n joy 2004 w211 BUT i do love this gen Honda :)
My 02 accord just crossed 300k, i just got it back on the road and quite literally let it sit for a year and got in it and went
I absolutely do not like the bodystyle of this gen of Accord's in the US, but as for the ones in EU, I absolutely love them. The rear looks so much proper, so much better conceived in those.
i agree this car was boxy and ugly. The 5th gen looked way sleeker
I feel this was the best looking and I had gen 8 and gen 4 and gen 6
Fantastic review!! Do you have a review of the Camry of this era? The 1997-2001? I just bought one, it was between this and the Camry. I'd love to compare them! Thank you! 🙏
He has a review of a 1997-2001 Camry but the car has been converted to a race car and most of the interior has been removed
This was my first car. 2000 SE in dark green
Mine had 25,000 miles when I inherited it. currently at 38,000.
2002 Accord......578,000 miles purrs like a kitten!!! Fffffff usa !!!
To be fair, Honda's CVTs are towards the more reliable end in the CVT realm, and their 10AT are far more reliable than their 5AT from the 2000s and 6AT and 9AT from the 2010s.
This generation Accord and the competing generation Camry are some of the best cars ever made.
You should see my green 2000 Accord with 344,000 on it and it drives great! I wish the paint was as good as it drives.
I loved my 01 accord had 300k+ miles
Engine purred like a kitten unfortunately that was the best thing about the car in its condition.
Get good with a ball joint pressure and get a manual and you'll almost never have an issue.
Love these accords for reliability and while I love my problem child 7s
my 99 with 256k still going
One detail he left out is. Not only are the new hondas not as reliable, but thier also not as sporty either.the new accord no longer offers a v6 or a turbo 4 cylinder like in previous generations. If you want a performance version you have to buy a manual si type r civic or integra, tlx.but not everyone can drive manual or afford an acura
I had one of these as my first car
I still drive one. 1998 . It's old as I am
awesome vid
Thank you for your video.
I have the exact motor in my 2000 Honda accord LX 306,500 miles .
Same trans. and motor oil & gas and go , go , go .
Awesome video!
I am saving up to buy a 2000 Honda Accord SE.
Still drive a 93, same color. I must say I think the styling was better in the 90s than the early 2000s but otherwise pretty much the same car as far as motor and trans.
How did you do the old style vhs tape filter?
It's a phone app called RarevisionVHS
@@ShootingCars thank you,!
1:18 that's a brutal leak
Gen 6 was the best. 265k on mine 2.3 liter auto trans. No oil burning
I had a 1999 Accord. Ran it up to 451,000 miles
My brother has a 2003 and had transmission problems. Had to replace it, this is a know issue of this generation.
2003 was the first year of the 7th gen, not this one.
8:17 not necesarily, this car and a lot of late 90’s early 2000’s hondas had bad transmission problems
"Peak of Honda reliability" but transmission issues on it and the Acura variants.. the generation or two or three before this was the peak. Same way my Subaru had NOTHING to do with G.M. it was all Fuji Heavy Industries and made in Indiana.
im dissapointed you never reviewed the V 6 accords, only a k tuned 9th gen. which wasnt stock
Want to collect all of the 2000 Honda Accords. Did you start up or did I miss this
I have a 2000 Honda Accord with 220,000 mi and still runs awesome. I wouldn't be surprised if it hits 500,000mi. It also has the 2.3 with an auto. It's the DX so nothing really special. No cruise control no electronic windows no mirror heater and mirrors not powered.
You da man pradel! Got the lx with a stick
Love the color
