I Bought A $300 MYSTERY Ford Ranger And It Will NOT START

  • A friend of mine posted a 1993 Ford Ranger on FB he'd given up working on. They's replaced a bunch of parts, it ran for a moment and quit, so they parked it. I bought it for $300 thinking it would be fixed in a few minutes and gone the same day. Instead it's been a troubleshooting marathon and we're no closer to it running than when we started.

I owned a 94 4 cylinder XLT short bed like this. I bought it in 95 and put about 100,000 more miles on it. Only ever had 2 problems. First problem: the FORD dealer did a tune up on it and when I got it back it ran a bit rough. Long story short, when they did the tune up they only re-connected 4 of the 8 spark plugs...they left off the more visible/accessible plugs. Second problem: at 86,000 miles it needed a new clutch. Not surprisingly, because I used that truck for pizza delivery and really tore it up trying to get pizzas to customers in time.
The mid 90s Rangers are truly Ford Tough, and I still see many of them, the Chevy/GMC competition of the same time period? Hardly ever see them.

Im a mechanic in NZ We had a mazda 323 come into the shop for an exhaust repair I fixed the exhaust and took it for a roadtest around the block and back. It had a 1/4 of a tank and coming back it died . I had to phone work and get towed in on a rope. I got it back to work and it started and ran well. I spent a while on it checking it over. I couldn't see any thing wrong and gave it back to the customer and it died as he left the shop. He come in and ask if we have any gas. I said it has 1/4 of a tank it must have a problem. He said "i ran over a concrete block and bent the tank and it dies at a 1/4 of a tank". So i ended up fixing it. I took the seat and fuel pump out and it had been sitting at a 45* angle in the tank. I grabbed a bit of 2x2 and put it in into the tank and wacked it a few times. Straightened the pump bracket out and refitted and all was well. The silly problems you come across sometimes.

When this truck came out this was the color I wanted in an extra cab. I was told there were no purple trucks in all of the surrounding states, as the truck had just come out, so I had to settle for silver. It was either that or Cayman Green, which I did not want. I hate silver vehicles. The fate of that truck was the odometer stopping at 6000 miles and I traded it in for a 1993 full size GMC Sierra extra cab. Prob a long shot but you might check the shift linkage down on the driver side of the trans. Truck won't start if it isn't clocked correctly. It has about a half inch of adjustability. I believe you basically need to make sure it is dead center in P,N,D when you select or the truck won't know it is in P and therefore won't start. Accidentally learned about this when i swapped to the upgraded valve body gasket in my 3.0 danger ranger. BtW an underdrive pulley is the most bang for the buck mod on the 3.0. Really helps off the line. Huge difference for under 200 with new matching belt. Tons of info about this online. Now the muffler bearings make sense. As the exhaust gasses pass through the muffler, the bearings rotate to open/close the baffles in order. If the bearings are bad, and all baffles are closed, there's no escape, no exhaust, and the backpressure kills the engine. Along the same lines, the exhaust timing could be off. The engine timing belt was replaced, or was it? He may have meant the Catalytic Converter belt. Unfortunately, you can't just straight pipe it without replacing the computer. Since they enacted the muffler laws, the computer will detect a massive exhaust leak and shut down the engine. Then again, it's throwing a code. P3006 is the mass exhaust leak. It could be as simple as a bad muffler sensor. I think you're on to something here Alan. But the blinker fluid? That would only affect the rack and pinion steering linkage. It would affect the turning radius, but not the engine. As Leftea said, '97 for Ford, but even then it was only F350 Super Duty. It really helps when you're hauling a house.

I did not replace anything without determining that it was faulty first.
I had bad misfires on three cylinders and the spark plugs were oily for those cylinders. The tube seals were also broken on those cylinders, so I replaced the tube seals. and cleaned out the oil the best that I could. I also replaced the distributor because the points were corroded and it was leaking oil. After checking all kinds of other things I swapped over wires from my other Honda and the misfires mostly went away, but somehow those wires had significantly worse resistance than the bad ones, so I replaced both sets.

Also there's a fuel regulator that may be bad. Check the throttle sensor, and the Massive Air Flow Sensor and Connection. You check the Emergency Fuel Shutoff?
