West Virginia Food Taste Test

- These six Californians were lucky enough to try cuisine from the Mountain State and their reactions are seriously priceless. Sorry guys, buckwheat pancakes aren’t your mama’s pancakes and not all jerky is made of beef.
Watching these silly West-Coasters learn the ropes is an absolute must-see.

As a West Virginian this is hilarious.
Give them Tudors so they can die feeling they've lived a complete life
FUN FACT: I've lived in Charleston, Wv all my life and during school they had pepperoni roll day and that was the only day that mattered. if you heard it was pepperoni roll day on Friday when they announced it on monday, you talked about those pepperoni rolls from Monday until Friday.
YESSS!! I'm a sophomore in high school and we have those days. (Clarksburg, WV)
+Addie Riley agreed, when the intercom comes on in the morning and we hear peperoni rolls, the hole room screams, YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAASSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
wheres the biscuits and sausage gravy?! it might not be only west virginia, but its definitely a popular one around here.
Ramps should have been included in this taste test.
I'm sorry, that one chick, she just drove me crazy. She kept picking her food apart, and acting like she's such a dainty eater or something. I wanted to scream at the computer "PICK UP THE DAMNED DOG!" when she started ripping it apart. And the pepperoni roll? WTF was that about lady? Really? Okay, I'm done, I'm done. I can't go off on the way she eats anymore or I'm going to start getting mean.
They also forgot to sample APPLE BUTTER !! it is awesome on a biscuit. I am native to West Virginia and we fix it with our golden delicious apples that are originated in West Virginia. FRIED APPLES are also a favorite in West Virginia.
Deer jerky..... You just can't beat it lol
Next time try a Tudor's Biscuit!!!
Big tater is the bomb.
always have a safety meeting
Heck yeah
The Mountaineer biscuit!! Enough said :)
papageorgegeo I thought FOR SURE Tudors was going to be on here. First thing I thought of.
I grew up in West Virginia and it wasn't until I moved to Canada when I was 19 that I learned slaw dogs aren't normal. I was pissed for years that I couldn't get a hot dog with cole slaw. Then I found out it's just a West Virginia thing. It should be an EVERYONE thing! The only way to eat a hot dog is with cole slaw, damn it!
The two guys made this video for me. The other two couples were just painful to watch. Very cringeworthy. Love the guys' responses to the good though, they're so enthusiastic -- good on them for keeping such an open mind!
***** Yeah, she was the worst. Easily the worst person in the video by far.
and what was with that fake/weird Italian accent thing?
I have no idea, what horrible people.
West Virginia is awesome
I live there
WV native here. Don't think I've ever had a buckwheat pancake, but yes to the others. However, these are just foods we are known for....real down home cooking wasn't really hit on at all. Where's the beans and white cornbread? That yellow stuff is for babies and northerners. Where's the Sunday dinner momma slaved over all afternoon, with a roast that was put in the oven before church? Where's the BlackBerry cobbler made from fresh picked berries? Where's the biscuits and gravy (bacon or sausage)? They missed out!
I agree that ramps should've been on been on the list, even though I won't touch them. My mom is from Clay Co, where they hold a ramp festival every year. Just driving through town will make you stink! Haha
lol I have lived in KY and WV all of my life and the only thing in this video that I've ever had or made is pepporoni rolls and slaw dogs. I have ate deer jerky ( venison jerky ) but it didn't look like the ones in this video. Around here we eat a lot of soup beans ( pinto beans ) , fried taters n onions ( fried potatoes ) , cornbread ( fried or baked ) , greens , kraut and wieners ( sour kraut with hot dog wieners or polish sausage). That is a good dinner around here. You should of served them what I mentioned and see how they like true WV cooking.
+Janie Kazee what you just described got me so hungry lol. that's a real dinner and I'm from southern wv.
Pepperoni Rolls originated in WV from coal miners wives looking for a way to keep their husbands' lunches from spoiling.
The two guys were cracking me up. Wish they would have included some ramps and wild greens or some other wild meat dishes. The hotdog was my favorite.
OMG I love everything about West Virginia and yep all those foods are goodies.
Nothing is better than 6 pepperoni rolls after 15 or 16 beers.
Umm... People don't have pepperoni rolls in other states? I feel sorry for you... XD
My mom was born in West Virginia and lived pepperoni rolls. She moved to Virginia and brought them to school. Everyone wondered what they were. 😂😂😂
West Virginia is the state of Good Food
WV native, lived here all my life, and I swear I didn't know this stuff was only WV food. I knew pepperoni rolls were from WV but the rest, like don't you have that everywhere? And why no ramps?
Stop making fun of WV. It's an awesome state to live in
The one chick was super annoying. I could be wrong, but she seemed to be super judgemental, making comments about how 'anything could be in there' etc. DO YOUR RESEARCH!!!! Stop basing your opinions of a place you've probably never been off of the stereotypes you've been told about it.
And you know your ass loved that pepperoni roll.
lol
nah... her ass just needs dropped off in the Monongahela National Forest.. and told to survive... her opinion would change really quick.. or.. she'd be bear food.. either way... WIN!
R Sergent omg that is too funny
R Sergent HAHAHAH oh my gosh!
katescrazylife well you know how we all LOVE eatin' critters back here in the sticks!
They should've had them eat ramps!
Mmm pepperoni rolls. That's the number 1 thing I hated about being deployed was I couldn't get mom to FedEx me pepperoni rolls.
You have to leave in the Northern Part of WV to know what Buckwheat Pancakes are.
Different areas of WV have their own hot dog protocol. Fairmont citizens, for example, like to drink chocolate milk with their hot dogs. Slaw is also good on pork bbq sandwiches. I don't know who made those pepperoni rolls but they look like appetizers compared to the ones I make. I also use another WV specialty, peppers in sauce, to stuff inside the pepperoni rolls, top with shredded mozzarella, and zap in the microwave. Black walnuts here are as priceless as the morel mushrooms we hunt each Spring. Buckwheat cakes have to be made the right way in order for them to taste good. We love them so much we have a Buckwheat Festival each year in September. Something you didn't try, which is eaten more than black walnuts, are Ramps. They are wild onions that grow in wooded areas. We cut them up into a skillet with sliced potatoes and fry them. They have a tendency to make you smell bad for a day or so afterwards but people love them. Thanks for the video. We do have delicacies, you know. Not all of us eat roadkill.
Joyce Anglin Miller Slaw on pulled pork sandwiches is more of a North Carolina thing that spread to West Virginia by way of the KY/TN/VA tri-state area than a West Virginia thing, and slaw on hot dogs and burgers was more of a SWVA/EKY development.
They should've gotten the hotdogs from the Dairy Queen in Clendenin! Those things are pure heaven
Skeenies.
You misspelled "Hinton" KilljoyForever
Hintins dairy Queen hotdogs are da bomb
KilljoyForever Lynn's in Bluewell, WV.
Andy Raisovich yes
I'm upset that there were no ramps or molly moochers featured in this.
How about some mashed potato fried fritters?
In 20 years here I've never heard of Molly moochers. Care to explain?
What about pawpaws? They need to revisit this episode...
Alicia Snow And no squirrel like come the hell on
CynicallyObnoxious I have never had squirrel---at least not that I know of:)
Mary Herrick Its not bad not great but better then most holler folk food
I love pepperoni rolls ❤ these ones here are babies compared to what we make! And love me some homemade deer jerky. My pap made the best in Tucker County, WV.
Pinto beans and corn bread!
Apple cake and pepperoni rolls. You can keep the rest. WV native here, btw.
That is my hypothesis, or we are just cheap...:)
Free for sure! I fruit and veggies grown in the backyard. I live in a city now, and last year's tomatoes were a bummer.
mine too, I was not able to can tomato sauce :( or enough cucumbers to pickle...
You forgot the Mr Bees ---How do you have a slaw dog with out Mr Bees
Mary Herrick Heck yeah, Mr. Bees are a Parkersburg tradition! :)
I've lived in West Virginia all my life and I've never eaten buckwheat pancakes.
I'm from west Virginia and that woman was being judey..
The buckwheat cakes needed syrup.
Some good old corn syrup would have made them perfect.
GO WEST VIRGINIANS!!! I live in wv
And they need to give them Ramps in potatoes, Molly moochers, and Tudors biscuit world!
I know some of those aren't just West Virginia but I love them!
Aww, thanks Adam. I hope you enjoyed our food. Welcome to come down here anytime!
Love my state WVU
You missed out on eating ramps!
Andrew Bailes LOL, they couldn't handle ramps! XD
Racing girl haha probably not XD
I LOVE WEST VIRGINIA SLAW DOGS!!!
I don't know why, but the girl who keeps picking at her food is making me really uncomfortable
Another WV native here and never realized walnut apple cake was a WV thing, the rest is awesome. Kind of sad they didn't do something with PawPaws or ramps
WV rocks I've lived in charleston my whole life
I forget not many other states have pepperoni rolls... they're missing out
I was literally eating a pepperoni roll as I was watching this. And do they not have them in other states? If not, you have no idea what you're missing!
I was born in and grew up near Parkersburg. We'd always have sauce on our hot dogs. And hot dogs with sauce AND slaw is to die for! Black walnuts are delicious, I think. Any WV native know if the Black Walnut Festival is still held in Spencer every year? Never have had buckwheat pancakes, but I want to now.
Amy Thompson That's great! I hadn't been to the festival since I was a kid. I live in another state now and don't get back to WV too often anymore. I sure do miss those mountains.
racingirl1595 I'm not a native West Virginian but yes, there is definitely still a Black Walnut Festival in Spencer, WV every October. :) My husband grew up in Spencer and my in-laws still live there.
racingirl1595 Born and raised in Parkersburg, and you are absolutely correct! I miss "Binky's" on South Side!!
I love how Maggie picks apart her food to spread out the experience. She cracks me up!
Black Walnut festival in Spencer still goes on every year. Parkersburg resident here... And yes finely chopped slaw with sauce is still the best hotdogs.
I grew up in WV and I laughed out loud several times. You guys were all awesome; I especially loved Adam's reactions.
I live in West Virginia and I haven't even heard of those pancakes!!!!!!!
Mind blown°0°
Lived in WV all my life, have tried all the foods except Buckwheat pancakes. Don't think I would like em' very much. Those two guys were the best..lol... Loved em'
Almost heaven!!!! Let's goooooo Mountaineers!!!
I adore Adam. Come visit WV and we'll send you home with a box of Pepperoni Rolls.
Or you can stay forever and crash on the couch.
I've lived in West Virginia my whole life and the only things in this video I've even heard of were the pepperoni rolls and the slaw dogs...I've never laid eyes on any of that other stuff before let alone tried it lol that cake doesn't look too bad though haha
Venison jerky, deer jerky, hunters, you know the whole population of West Virginia lol. I'm surprised you didn't know that one living here in WV
You've never heard of deer jerky? Lol
Buck wheat is a eastern part of the state, even a big festival and parade for Buckwheat....Deer jerky is no joke good, it is a very old tradition. But I would not call it West Virginia, deer jerky is common any where is a deer season.
Mary Herrick Buckwheat is big in areas such as Tucker and especially Preston Counties, the festival is annually around harvest mid-late October in Kingwood,WV
I love that people try wv food. That's where I'm from. I just moved to sc. But I miss my pepperoni rolls and deer jerky.
The bald guy and the backwards hat guy need their own channel.
Im from WV and ive never seen/heard of a buckwheat pancake
Please do North Carolina! Livermush, Cheerwine, vinegar based BBQ, and Pecan pie!
Dani Mae I used to spend summers with my grandma in NC and had all of these foods there. So happy that I can get Cheerwine north of Virginia now!!
I was born and raised in West Virginia and I've only heard of the pepperoni rolls and the slaw dogs. Umm, you should have tried putting in some of our comfort foods and not weird shit like that.
All of them are not specific to West Virginia. This is coming from someone who is from West Virginia Maryland area. All of them are in the Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia area.
The pepperoni rolls were the only true wv food though.
LarryShipper
It is our spirit food.
Cynthia Goodrich yes
Caity Fournier If anything, it's more just Appalachian food than strictly West Virginia food.
Caity Fournier Ive lived in West Virginia my whole life all of these are infact from the Appalachian area, not just WV,the only thing thats like the biggest trade mark is the pepperoni, not because its "Only" in WV but because it was invented in WV, they have pepperoni rolls in Pennsylvania Maryland etc. as well
You need to do a Louisiana food taste test! Gumbo, jambalaya, alligator sausage, sauce picante , beans & rice, Étouffée, crawfish.... you get the picture!
Should have had ramps morel mushrooms and fried cabbage my all time fav. And a slaw dog is nothing but a chili dog with slaw lol
Hey Adam I'll cook you some West Virginia food when you get here! :)
Cook him some cream tomatoes.
Biscuits with Apple Butter or Leather Breeches beans and cornbread are more traditional for West Virginia.
Buckwheat pancakes suck on their own, but if you cover them in sausage gravy it's almost heaven.
Georgia Food Taste Test: Peach Cobbler, Collard Greens and Rice, Hoppin' Johns, Biscuits n' Gravy, Country Ham, Fried Chicken, Sweet Tea, Orange Fluff and Blackberry Pie
*****
Yeah I just moved to North Dakota a couple of months ago and I haven't seen any of it up here so...
Lmao. These always make me laugh! 😂😂😂
It's like a pocket of love
Here in wv we call it peperoni not salami.
Maggie needs her own show. She gets it.
Those weren't even the good pepperoni rolls!!
+Amanda Ware ikr
I have eaten Pepporoni Rolls and the jerky before (which is NOT strictly a WV thing). Both are great. Never ate slaw dogs because I would not put slaw on my hot dog by my granny-in-law does that. I would eat the apple cake though.
You should have had them try some hot dog sauce no it's not chilly its hot dog sauce there are no beans and it is sweet
LibertysTeeth83 I can't believe they didn't have sauce on those hot dogs! I grew up eating sauce on mine, and I still love it.
I've never had a slaw dog, but I love everything else. Buckwheats are one of my favorite things. I agree that ramps should've been on the list. I love the guy who wants to move here. :D
They could try mush or pawn haus next time.
I am from West Virginia and have ate all of those foods, but never had slaw dogs or buckwheat pancakes until I worked in New York and New Jersey.
thats what i was thinking iv been born and raised here in rural wv for 21 years and iv never even heard of buckwheat pancakes before this video lol
You should do North Carolina!
So good
I'm from WV and some of these even I haven't heard of, although I'm quite picky and don't get out much. Pepperoni rolls is a WV only thing though? Wow...
I'm from West Virginia! :)
Should of got them hotdogs from skeenies
Those were shitty pepperoni rolls!
You forgot the ramps...
If you're gonna be giving people deer jerky, you at least gotta let em know so they can mentally prepare themselves.
Mentally prepare? Deer Jerky is like golden jerky nectar from the gods. Beef jerky just doesn't compare for me.
ItoshiiPanda I'm just saying, the first time I had deer anything, it freaked me out cause something was off and I just didn't know what. Like it was good but I was freaked cause it wasn't what I was expecting. lol
I love Adam. I want to be his best friend.
Why don't you actually come here to West Virginia and try some of the food here, and not something you most likely bought off eBay or amazon, that's stale or dry or no good.
That is every day food
Do most people judge us as wrongly as these people did? At least they know we have good food now.
They knock our food and mock us on Camera
You should do Iowa foods
Love that blonde woman; she's so funny. Also, make a vegan taste test video! Y'all are awesome :)
I am from there
Romany
Whoever made those buckwheat cakes doesn't know how to cook them, they are not suppose to be that thick!
Where's the Virginia food.0? Like biscuit and gravy :)
That one lady was annoying as hell. She wouldn't even eat the food she just picked at it. But I am born and raised in WV by god. I tried every one except the buck pancakes.
you guys should check out the buckwheat festival in Preston County, good food & good people. that or good food and crazy hillbillies. www.buckwheatfest.com/ BOOM! there ya go. fun vid and yinz just made me crazy homesick I'll half-ta call my mum later today just to tell 'er I love her and miss her and no I'm not moving back I quite enjoy living in Hawaii, There might not be four seasons but who cares.
Yinz is southern PA. Not WV, y'all.
i know. that's where I moved so I could have a good job.
SavageTV Have you been to the northern panhandle?
Come on guys. West Virginia's not in a different country.
they're not even using the good stuff!!
ERIN looks asian she looks like filipina. you guys should try filipino food too.
