I Went To The Most Liberal Place In West Virginia

- You aren't gonna believe this part of West Virginia!
This is not your normal West Virginia. We’re in Morgantown, home to West Virginia University. It’s by far the most liberal place in this state. You could actually draw a circle for 500 miles and not find a higher concentration of Democrats.
People in Morgantown take pride in being ‘different’ then the rest of West Virginia. The liberals here’ll tell ya - we’re educated and a lot of us have good jobs. We have big world aspirations. We’re not dumb chew spitting inbred hicks.
I’m here because I wanted to see what it was like and talk to some of the people who live here in this mysterious, rare liberal land.
This was day 3 on my great Appalachian adventure, and the first stop in West Virginia - the only state that’s completely in the Appalachian region. We’re gonna spend the next four stops here in the mountain state. There’s plenty of time to see poverty and rundown and the effects of drugs. But we’re gonna begin in a different type of place. I think.

What a way to colonize each state.. I suppose you would of had to have a lot of 'colonists' with the same drive to really captivate a land... What a reach.

People in West Virginia are sick of outsiders (who know nothing of their lives) poking fun at them. If it makes them overly sensitive to anyone asking questions, I can understand that.
That makes me offended im a west Virginian i dont like the liberals and democratics the reason west virginia is good is that its republican!
💯
Same for most Kentuckians as well.

I’m so sick of people trashing WV and the people. That poor guy living in a shanty would be the first person to scoop you off the road as you lay dying.
He probably also has green teeth.
@@holdenc3082 I bet you don’t want to find out.
It just shows their ignorance. It’s easy to be a keyboard badass & spew insults at others. Especially when they are totally clueless about what they’re talking about.Makes them feel better about themselves. I just laugh at them. They have no back bone and live a pathetic existence. Just remember-Montani Semper Liberi
But of course he would! His brother ran you down and he's tryin' to hide your body.

This was one of the most cherry picked videos about West Virginia and particularly Morgantown that I’ve ever seen. You left out that Morgantown is home to a Power 5 University, with research capabilities that are on par with the biggest higher education institutions in the world. You left out that Morgantown has one of the U.S. Government National Labs that is innovating every day to solve the world’s energy problems. You left out the beautiful neighborhoods of Suncrest, Cheat Lake, and the surrounding area that boast multi-million dollar homes and instead showed the run down parts that every city has, regardless of location. You tailored this video to what the vast majority of people’s preconceived notions of what West Virginia is like rather than showing what it truly is; a state with a wide diversity of view points, with people fiercely loyal to it and willing to help almost anyone, regardless of beliefs or differences. I implore you to revisit this and make a video that truly captures what the people stand for. It’s a true shame.
Facts all away around! Thank you!
Found the guy who thru the yahoo drink on you here ^^^^^
And you're shading our man for cherrypicking. Good'n, bud. Ha!
Yeah this guy makes very bias, judgmental, low brow videos.
Kind of the same thing that people do to minority groups everywhere. They see what they want to see, and don't want to take the time to get to know the true nature of an individual.
I was born and raised in good ole' West Virginia for 70 years now, so sick and tired of others poking fun at us and calling us hillbillies.
Nick all I can say is be careful when interacting and interviewing people, as you never know what they're thinking, or what they'll do next. Not everyone has the ability to agree to disagree.
Hear Hear !!!!!!!!!!!
Yes, and when you’re not from there and they pride themselves on a fighting spirit… 🤔
I think he’s just trying to do his job so he can give us the best Content, but I most definitely agree 100%. Lots of people don’t have the capability to agree or disagree in a healthy way or adult manner. Also, yes, especially when it comes to strangers since there’s little we know about them there’s a chance they could turn violent easily.
Its hard to determine who really is sociable or not. They might have trigger words, but would otherwise be friendly. The previous videos where he interviewed homeless people shows even they can be friendly. But its hard to know who has a "Karen" button, and what subject pushes that button.
Yeah. I agree. Especially intoxicated people. However, I don’t think you come off as aggressive or anything.
I was born and raised in the Appalachians. I'm now in Northern VA but have a lot of family in WV and have followed developments in WV. The issues impacting WV are many and complex.
But here's a simple issue: people don't like condescension and one does not need a college education to recognize it.
After watching this video, I can understand why the "drunk redneck" had his feathers ruffled in the beginning. He likely saw the condescension. Everyone has something of value to say - don't try to engage in conversation if you refuse to recognize that.
couldnt agree more
💯 agree!
He obviously didn't have anything of value to say, not everyone does.
Yep. The kid asking questions is super smug and antagonistic.
West Virginia is trash.
My family and I moved to the Bay Area a few years ago and I’m thinking of purchasing a single family home, but with real estate prices currently through the roof, is it still a good idea to buy a home or should I invest in stocks for now and just wait for a housing market correction? I heard Nvidia and AMD are strong buys.
it’s a personal decision, but Forbes says housing activities will remain stagnant for the most part of the year, so maybe hold off a little.
well you could put a downpayment on a home and as well diversify as much as you can into Ai and pharm. stocks like Pfizer and JnJ.
Certain Ai companies are rumoured to be overvalued and might cause a market correction, I’d suggest you go with a managed portfolio, but even those don’t perform so well, so it’s best you reach out to a proper fiduciary to guide you, that’s what works for my spouse and I.
this is all new to me, where do I find a fiduciary, can you recommend one?
Don't be hesitant to contact Sonya Lee Mitchell and follow her directions.
It's good you make your own research. and make sure whoever you work with is licensed n verifiable with a repute, this Sonya looks the part but i'd do my due diligence. I set up a call, tnks.

Nick, go into some local WV bars, tell them you're a born-and-bred Californian, and you're here to tell them what to do.

Loved the narration of this video. You make up your own mind about Charleston\West Virginia.
West Virginia has lots of charm and contrasts. One of the most beautiful states in america.
I love that there's run down and abandoned places and that the cities didn't grow since the 1950s because that means they didn't tear town the old building and didn't replaced them. The small and mid size mountain towns are beautiful.
One of the most beautiful states in America? Do you live under a rock? It’s one of the most disgusting states if not the most disgusting.
Great video Nick hope to see more from west Virginia it's a pretty state as far as scenery. The conversations are always nice. These road trip videos are cool.
The average 18 year old doesn't understand shit about almost anything outside of their bubble. The law might call you an adult but 18 is a kid.
It is all good. We were all 18 at some point but what I've learned is that as you age you can take you're life experience good and bad and gain some wisdom. When you gain that wisdom share it with others in a positive way without making others feel like shit. That being said don't close you're ears to others that have been there before you. If you don't look at the past now and then you'll probably make the same mistakes in the future
Although the two are only 45 minutes apart, the clip of you driving through "Downtown Morgantown" @8:25 is incorrect. That is Washington, Pa.
"I did meet intelligent people" You must have felt so out of place.
He probably did. He'd also feel out of place amongst people with backbones, morals, ethics, personalities, and common decency and morals.
Always good to hear the observations of someone who goes into a situation with such an open mind.
I live in Morgantown Pennsylvania and yeah you would get the same response here unfortunately. And I literally live at the borderline between Southeastern and South central Pennsylvania. People can't have discussions it's Really sad. I love your videos keep up the good work.
I've learned more life lessons from men with beards in overalls than any person wearing a suit and tie with a college degree ever had or will. Money and wealth can go away in an instant, I'd rather eat crumbs with bums than steaks with snakes any day of the week.
Stu Pidasso Same thing in urban areas, older dudes who hang out in parks and street corners will teach any youngster about life than college. Comedian Sinbad said this himself.
WTF you all right lmfao 🤣

@@decacards5250it’s not that simple. College is definitely beneficial, if for nothing else, learning to socialize and interact with people who aren’t like you. When rich people on tv tell you education is a scam, you should not believe their degree having azzzzzz homie😊
I agree. Just because someone is educated, it doesn't mean they are intelligent.
I went to West Virginia University for my masters back in 2002. It was a beautiful campus back then. Thanks for filming around the campus. Brought back some great memories. We used to ride the PRT all the time.
I like it when you take risks and get out and talk to real people, even when they make no sense. And I like all the shots of "how this place looks today," whether good or bad. I like that you ask tough questions, and admit that you don't have the answers, either.

The one guy sitting there talking about Joe being out to lunch has a good understanding overall.
We have seen Trump's typical lunch menu (McDonalds). Like my neighbors grandchildren, Trump treats his food in a similar fashion: 'Donald Trump threw his lunch against the wall after AG Bill Barr said there was no widespread election fraud, ex-White House aide testifies." Barr has not disputed the event. This country is finished until some people find the courage to acknowledge crime and treason (regardless of party).

Be careful going around the Appalachians, Nick. This is the second time you have encountered aggressive behavior (in McCreary County, KY and now WV). There are a lot of good, God-fearing people living in that region but also some of the more hardcore, more intense people probably because they were hardened by poverty all their lives. When the government regulates their livelihoods to the point of extinction, it's easily understandable the bitterness and frustration they might feel when dealing with outsiders. Those areas really show the WV culture, which can be a bit different than many other of the Appalachian cultures through that range.
Oh I do :) just wait

I love your videos! I stayed in WV once. I actually met very nice accepting people. But they all kinda thought like me too. I Especially like what you said about Bedford NH a while back (my town). Keep up the great work.
Thank you, sir. That’s really how most people here are.
Thank you for saying nice things about are state, most don't
Funny, that’s exactly the same reasons my mother gave for why I should never try to interact with wild animals.
That being said…the few times I’ve been to WV I’ve only met nice, friendly people. Look forward to going back.
Born and raised in Miami Florida. Been in a few cities in California, Colorado and Georgia. I'll take West Virginia any day !!!! The people there treated me with respect.
LOVE YOU WEST VIRGINIA !!!! I'LL BE LIVING THERE SOON
If you're interviewing college kids in Morgantown, chances are you're going to get alot of Jersey kids.
I was looking for this comment
It is funny how you said that, because that was the case over 30 years ago. I knew 2 people back when I lived in NJ, who went to WVU. Also, heard about other people from the more rural parts of NJ who attended there. Morgantown cannot be too much more than 4 hours away from areas within NJ.
@@manfredmann2766 I went to Frostburg State back in the late 80s. There was a bunch of kids from Jersey going there as well.
Greetings from Brazil, man! I'm absolutely addicted to your channel. It is very good to see all of the nuances in american culture and politics while comparing to Brazil. I've once heard someone say the U.S. is going through a "Brazilification", specially in the most liberal areas, which I agree, since most liberal areas tend to have more lenient criminal laws (like not arresting people that steal goods up to a certain price tag, here in Brazil there isn't legislation about it, but the court system "legislates" on its own even though we come from a Civil Law [Roman tradition] background isntead of a Common Law [Anglo tradition] like you) but on that note, Brazil has been going through a Americanization process with more people fighting for individual freedoms, the right to bear arms, a more open economy, less state, etc.
People here are getting more educated on libertarianism and confronting those ideas with the ideas imposed on us ever since our monarchy fell and the tide is turning. Whereas we used to have elections leaning almost 80% towards the left, the last 2 elections basically ended 51/49. Let's see what the future holds for us, brother. This october I'll go to Canada and I hope to travel to the U.S. someday, love your culture and history and I always wanted to get to know the real USA, as shown in your videos. Keep it up. Stay strong. Take care. And as brazilians always say on the internet: COME TO BRAZIL haha
@2nd Place Since 1865 my girlfriend is from southern Brazil (Paraná) and I'm from southeast (Minas Gerais - Brazilian mountain mama without the drugs and the violence), though I'm used to Paraná's climate and Minas Gerais winds I know Canada will be a hell of challenge hahaha hope to not end up like Jack Nicholson in The Shining
Sort of off topic, but as a native Brazilian what year would you say Brazil changed for the worse? As in how many years now has Brazil been considered “more dangerous” by outsiders? I’m fascinated by Rio de Janeiro and am curious what caused brazils overall decline besides bad laws / drugs. Christ the redeemer overlooking a crime ridden city is bizarre to me.
@@Jltcp but don't be afraid about visiting RJ, for some time I've worked as a lawyer for one of the factions and the thing is that if you know where and how to walk around, you'll be safe. Just don't be looking extremely gringo and don't get too comfortable, it is sad but you always have to walk minding your surroundings since most of the crimes are unarmed thefts
Pro tip: in the beaches you'll have Postos (big buildings with numbers on them), go to the beach, take some pictures and then go to one Posto. For a small fee you can store your valuable items in small cabinets. You'll keep the key for the day. And after that just enjoy your day. (Sad but true, and doable)
What an interesting comment. Thank you for sharing a little insight into what your country is going through. Be well!
Brazil would be alot better if it still had the Monarchy. The more libertarian and Americanized the worse it will get
Oh geez... He poured his Yoohoo on you? Consider that a victory. You're my hero Nick! Glad to see the education system is working out for them over there...
