      Salvatore Aversa grind up a pig, put it in a can.... it's scrapple!! (TBH this stuff is really good, though)

    • @grantkohler7612
      @grantkohler7612 9 років тому +4

      Salvatore Aversa It's just a loaf of polenta flavored with spices and headcheese. That shouldn't cause any problems until they find a recipe for headcheese, but i'd guess you shouldn't tell those type of folks about mincemeat ingredients either.

    • @ladygarnetrose
      @ladygarnetrose 9 років тому +7

      grant kohler scrapple is everything left from the pig, but the oink mixed with corn meal.

    • @grantkohler7612
      @grantkohler7612 9 років тому +1

      ladygarnetrose Basic polenta is boiled cornmeal shaped into a loaf. Would you care to guess as to what headcheese is?
      Mind that pig intestines are used for chitlins, the stomach contains tripe, sweatmeats is another term for pancreas, and lard is rendered off the skin giving us some more good eatin', so really the other bodily parts are used for other purposes/recipes.

    I am from PA... never heard of ham pot pie, as it is usually made with chicken, and it looked too solid, it should have been more runny... and these people comparing Yuengling and PBR... SMH.. Some stuff that I would of added is Venison, chicken corn soup, and apple dumplings

  • @robboss3275
    @robboss3275 10 років тому +13

    Birchbeer > Rootbeer
    Scrapple is 6/5
    Yuengling is 5/5
    Pot Pie (any kind) is 5/5
    I don't have much of a sweet tooth, but Whoopie Pies are still amazing.
    But where's the fasnacht donuts? We have an entire freakin' holiday dedicated to them!

    The guy jokes about squirrel in pot pie... that's actually a thing here, I grew up eating it. It's probably the best way to eat squirrel.
    As for Middleswarth potato chips, they are unique (I hear they put powdered milk on the potatoes for the taste), but I prefer Hartley's as I grew up on them, they're crisp and salty. There's so many great chips here, though... Good's, Martin's, Gibble's and of course Utz which is one of the few regularly available outside PA. Last I heard Utz was up and down most of the East Coast and got fairly popular in NYC.

      Gernald You're just giving more reasons not to include it. They're looking for foods the area is UNIQUELY well-known for, not just stuff that people there eat. There's Dutch and Poles all over, and people eat sauerkraut all over. It's not a Pennsylvania "thing".

    I was surprised at how well they reacted to scrapple, whoever pick and prepared the sample must have known what they were doing, lucky them.

    I am Pennsylvanian born and currently live here too. Honestly I thought they picked out great items for the tasters like Birch beer, whoopie pies, scrapple, and the lager. The lager is from the oldest american brewery, personally I would have chosen the black and tan they make. but the ham pot pie seems like a bad choice to me. I would have went with Chicken and dumplings/pot pie.
