  • These don’t leak oil. Some small sweats or weeps of oil. Some butchers wreck them & cause oil leaks.

Our 2007 Prado was knocked back on RWC because of leaking valve cover gasket which was replaced after mini refurb at 300K klms, 13 years old.
I suspected the oil catch can (cheapie) was not flowing. I got it replaced with a Provent 200 by injector specialist as well as getting valve cover gasket replaced.
It’s the old story you get what you pay for, in fact cost me more than doing it properly from day one.
    Lesson learned!

Just did the number 1 leak repair. It was easy enough, just needed an extension for the 10mm socket to get access, and then a dental hook to retrieve the o-ring and base of plug that had broken off and remained visible in the block

Just had a new clutch put in after throw out bearing failed. Within a week it started slipping. Straight away I thought oil leak. Watched your video. Sure enough valve cover had signs of rtv around a bolt area at back of cover, seal had failed and dripping oil down the back of engine. Would’ve been nice of previous owner to tell me about it, but you get that. First post here, just wanted to say thanks from a new subscriber.

Ha, on closer inspection, it’s not a bolt head visible in the hole, it’s a nut… some dickhead has obviously tightened this thing down so hard they have stripped it. The things you see hey. And here I was thinking I was good to go for the safety inspection tomorrow to get this thing back on the road so I can get back to work.

Great video - issue number 1 happened to me this week, car is just shy of 270,000km and 12 years old. The little bung had brittle fracture into 12 pieces that needed to be retrieved bit by bit.

Just did an oil change on my 1kd and notice a lot of leaking oil, so much so it had collected on my bash plate. So much oil it was hard to discern where it was coming from. Saw this video and thought it would help solve my problems and point me to where the issue will be....Slightly concerning now that you say these engines typically don’t leak! Gave it a clean with brake cleaner and will check to see where the leak is coming from.

Do all the 1KD’s have the block plug ? , I can’t find it on my 05 Hilux but have an oil leak near the starter motor.

I’ve been watching your videos, great info, I’m having trouble with my 2010 Hilux, found a cracked cover as in your video after I had the injectors replaced, have replaced the cover and seals now but seem to have a decent leak somewhere else that’s making the gearbox really wet, I was advised to fit a catch can when I bought the car but am thinking maybe this has caused crankcase build up and blown out a seal somewhere.
Would love to have a chat with you to point me in the right direction.
Will sms you during work hours and hopefully speak to you soon about what parts I may need to fix this problem
    Love the videos great info
    Cheers Mik

So I thought I'd point out, that it seems not all 1kd-ftv, Kun26r Hilux have this plug hole @4:23. My 2007 does not have this, not where this video shows under the Starter anyway. On my Hilux there is no hole and no plug, but there is a spot that is the same shape as the plug in the engine wall under the Starter of where it would be if it had one.
So yeah, not all of them have this it seems.

That #1 leak area - What was that plugs purpose? Is it an inspection hole of some kind?
