CBS News' Anne-Marie Green and Vladimir Duthiers spoke with Mark Glickman, Ph.D., a senior lecturer in statistics at Harvard University, about what your odds of winning really are and what to know before you buy your tickets.

What he should have said is that your chance of winning the jackpot is so extraordinarily low (1/292200000), you’re better off just buying one ticket because additional tickets will yes, increase your odds ..but at such an infinitesimally small amount it ultimately makes no difference as your odds will still be incredibly low. Also note that buying 5 tickets does *not* actually improve your odds by 5 times because of the permutations in such a calculation.. there are all of the possible combinations you can pick in conjunction with all of the potential outcomes of the drawing, not to mention the “order” of those numbers does matter with regards to the power ball number.. greatly lowering the already low chance of winning. In other words, even if you bought 292.2million tickets… your odds would *not* simply be 292200000/292200000 = 1/1 = 1 (aka guaranteed) to win the jackpot.. also it would just as much increase your odds of your numbers matching other peoples’ numbers which could potentially mean dividing your winnings any number of ways. Then of course there’s taxes. 🙂 Buy one ticket and save the other money you might spend on yourself or your family… it’s a guaranteed return as opposed to a pipe dream.

I write out all the numbers and place a count after each drawing to the number that wins. I have used those numbers that have been drawn most frequently and the ones that haven’t hit in a while but are likely to come up again. I usually earn a few dollars but have not cracked the lottery code.

@@mr.pizzamarlon : Not to argue but everything is mathematical . The brakes in your car was created by an excel spreadsheet. The chair, table and the house was all constructed by math. Our world is filled with numbers and math we just don’t always see it. Nothing is by chance.
I don't know about the big one but pick 3 I have figured out a pattern and I do all right each month I'm guaranteed to hit 10 to 12 times. All you do is take at the beginning of the first draw of the month just watch to see what number comes out. For example, say the number that came out was 479, you take the 47 then play zero through nine and then do that for 7 9 and 49. More often than not they'll keep two of the numbers and which number between 0 and 9 would that combination.

I was 1 number and the powerball number off from winning. On 11/2 (my anniversary I played 11 2 22 35 62. PB 21 the winning numbers were 2 11 22 35 60 PB 23 😩

They could make a lot of people happy if they spread out the winnings more based on the numbers matched. A lot of people would be satisfied with 2 million for example.
You can go on poker sites and hear this all day long. Oh man, I had the flush but he caught the full house on the river. It doesn't matter whether you had 5 white balls and missed the PowerBall by one or bought 100 tickets and didn't catch a single number, jackpotwise.
