Performance Harley Cams Have Their Issues

  • Performance Harley Cams are awesome for a power boost but they do have their issues. You have to give something up for something to make the big power with a performance Harley cam you'll have to deal with some degree of valvetrain noise. Performance Harley cams are much more aggressive than stock, stock are designed to be smooth and quiet, meet emissions. That doesn't make power but they are quiet, the good news is a little valve train noise doesn't hurt anything other than your head but you're making good power and may even get used to it.

Just a tip for others thinking about installing a Woods TW222 cam in an otherwise stock 103. I had watched another earlier video where this cam was reported to be a “drop in” cam. For the most part, that is correct, but if you use your stock original push rods after you have “dropped it in,” you will NOT be happy with the resultant valve train noise. It is loud, and it makes you feel as if there is something substantially wrong with your install. You will wonder if you forgot to torque the rocker arm assembly, or messed up the cam bearing install. It is seriously that bad. The reason for the noise is a smaller base circle on the cams. The fix is to use adjustable push rods and make the proper adjustment. It gets rid of most of the noise. Not all of it, but at least you will feel a little better about whether the engine is about to fail on you. Just letting you know.

      @@timmattle4730
As long as the push rods have been adjusted properly and your lifters have not failed-hopefully you replaced them, and you have good oil pressure, you should be ok.
When I first “dropped them in” they were so noisy I was worried about the install. I did it myself. Finally decided to upgrade the cam plate, lifters, oil pump, and installed adjustable push rods and was much happier after that. I probably have about 8 thousand miles on them now.
You might want to re-check the push rods for proper lash.

Well after my new push rods the noise was a lot less. Had stock first, because of the “drop in” claim. Could not stand that noise so I reached out to Woods. They were the ones that said the old push rods wouldn’t work.

Well I know you said you used an experienced tuner to do your work, but if it was me, I would check the push rod adjustment. If you are confident the lifters are all working correctly, the push rods would be the only other cause. Unless there is wear somewhere else. But that you are only experiencing it now, after the install, leads me away from that being the cause. How many miles on the bike? You would have needed to upgrade the air intake for those cams too. Did you do that?

Thanks for all of your great videos. I have a 2005 Fatboy that I bought used, stock. Your videos have really been clear and helpful to a non-mechanical guy like me, not only to learn about what I had bought back in 2015 but also the mods I have been making over time. In 2019, I did the Stage 2 cams, plate and pump, spring cam chain tensioners swap-out, tappets, etc. I am now in the process of doing Stages 3 & 4, pumping it up to 95ci, 10.5-1 pistons, and moderate head porting. Engine life versus cam swap. A cam that doesn't require new springs is completely rider dependent. Run to it redline every time you ride it and it will be early failure. For the rest of us it's an afterthought. As for the M8, not swapping stock tappets for quality is a serious gamble. I've never even consider the valve train noise on my bike with my Woods 222 cam. I always thought riding on top of an engine your going to hear things you never do in a car. I ride with an open face helmut, but also never ride without my ear plugs on either. It's the wind that I worry about. I got good hearing and so far so good. That cam on my SGS, the head work I had done, plus all the other parts to upgade, just make the engine sing. I saw the numbers on the 103 you put up, and I'm similar: 116 torque with 103hp. Keep in mind, once you go to a certain level of cam, other parts need to go with it. Carb, intake manifold, ignition timing (ignition module like Dynatek), valve springs (and head work in general), and sometimes cam clearancing in the cam chest, and Adjustable push rods. My favorite cams for the for 88 or 95 inch twinkie is the S&S 510. Spicy cam. I think 90% of average riders would be very happy with this cam. If all you want is a cam upgrade with no other work, this is the one I recommend bar none. Currently I'm running a gear drive Cycle Rama 575 cam in a 95 twink, with head work, springs, piston, and what have you on my Wide Glide. This is my third engine for my Wide Glide, and feel I finally have what I've been searching for.

I have about 2500 miles on it. 06 88 tc in an flhtci.
First of all. Those noises are part of what makes a high performance build desirable. I love the noise.
    As far as durability....
The big HP gains have had me running the bike a lot harder and Im sure that will negatively impact longevity. Not to mention the belt on a 1000 lb bike.
I will say I dont feel like the tuner has it right yet. It wont run smooth while trying to be mellow. Steady low rpm in town it doesnt sound happy... which only makes me run hard more.
It will pull the front wheel in 1st and 2nd. Not wheelies... just pulls the wheel if I get pissed at some ahole from low speed.
Also in this day and age theres fuel economy.
I commute on my bike as often as possible.
At stock 88 I got as high as 42 mpg.
At 100 I have seen 33 but mostly its right around 30.

GixerFoo, I’m planning on sending my left case half to Hammer Performance for installation of the Timken bearings for the crank of my ‘06 88 TC. I’m also planning on sending them my cylinders to bore them to 98 ci and the heads for CNC porting. The Hammer Performance pistons are supposed to give me a 10.5:1 compression ratio and I’d like to use a S&S Easy Start cam to make it easier to start and easier on my starter and battery. Would you consider doing a video on these Easy Start cams? My other question is that with these modifications I should be into the lower hundred range on horsepower and torque. Am I pushing the limits of the stock Harley belt final drive and/or the stock 6 speed transmission. I plan on adding a Fuel Moto/AIM Variable Pressure clutch and a Darkhorse Man O-War compensator along with a manual primary chain adjuster. Will this bring the rest of the drivetrain up to being able to handle the power that I’m planning on producing from these engine mods? Do you have any other suggestions other than exhaust, air cleaner, oil cooler, and a dyno tune for the finished project?

I just did the square 100 kit on my 06 88. Its in an flhtci.
I also have concerns for the belt. Plus the added performance has had me running way harder than I did stock. After some 2500 to 3,000 miles Im starting to mellow out.
The easy start cam starts right up with 10.5 to 1. Cranks just like it did stock.
As for noise there is a loud clank when you shut her down. Its the little flipper on the lobes. Its a strange sound that will make you think bad things. But its normal.
Also the engine has a pleasing sort of lope at idle.
I am nit 100% pleased with the tune yet. Too rich in spots. Doesnt feel happy unless your running it hard.
I did not dyno over 100.
I think it was 95 ft lbs and 89 hp. I have the stock head pipes. Going to swap them out this season.
The other draw back is no oxy sensors on my built in October 05 bike. So fuel management could be better.
