The story may not be 100% true but Germany was at war Jojo's entire life, so he really did not know anything different. There were Nazi youth camps, and towards the end of the war children and old people were sent to fight. Hitler did not smoke and was a vegetarian but remember everything he said in this movie was actually Jojo's thoughts. Great movie and great reaction.
It's absolutely true. Everyone thinks they're beyond drinking the kool-aid, but the reality is when you're told something is true long enough, people believe it, especially if it's ingrained in them since childhood. It's wrong, dubious at best, immoral even, but if that's all you know it's harder to break.
This goes to show that hatred in children is TAUGHT.
The Hitler Youth (the only allowed youth movement in WWII Germany) was like that, with paramilitary and propaganda training, was required for all German boys 10 to 18 from 1939-45. Many German girls were in the parallel female version. As the War continued, increasing military units composed of the Hitler Youth were sent into actual military service. An SS Division "Hitler Jugend" was made up of Hitler Youth who had completed their training.

When Captain K appeared with Jojo’s mother’s bike in the inspection scene, it wasn’t a coincidence his appearance. He knew Jojo’s mother death and he came to Jojo’s house to make sure he is fine.
Yeah, and at the end too. Sam Rockwell just kills every role he's in. But to be fair, the entire cast kills it in this movie.
Captain K is amazing
Been confirmed that wasn’t her bike, just the one he used to get there. Him arriving in her bike would’ve given him away and gotten him killed too. But yeah he was there to help Jojo.
The subtle scene everyone misses that tells you Captain K isn't a Nazi is the book burning. He is drinking and the look of concern and disgust he has.

My Opa had the Gestapo raid his house a few times. It wasn't half as nice as they showed. Typically, they came around 3-4 am, and they weren't polite about it.

@3:20 The Hitler Youth was a real thing (Hitler Yuengen??? Sp??). I had read that nearly 90% of German adolescents participated in it at it's peak, although I'm sure a certain percentage of parents sent them due to social pressure and obvious potential consequences if they did not do so. I love this film. It does an amazing job of dealing with a horrible topic with a delicate balance of parody. Everyone has the same initial anxiety watching it and then you just "get it."
Kids can definitely get this film. I’d never heard of it until I found my son watching it on Netflix, at the age of 11. He’d already watched it many times and actually seemed to be learning something from it. I then realised why he’d been asking me lots of questions about Nazi Germany for the previous few months. So I sat down with him and we watched it together. It’s opened up a large topic of discussion.
Whilst there are plenty of things exaggerated for comic effect, the fact is that children were indoctrinated at an early age, kids and old men were sent to fight and so-called traitors were left hanging in public as a warning and example to others. I’m glad my son learned about Nazi Germany and WW2 from a film that shows the human story, and not some war film that glorifies weapons and fighting.
I’ve now watched it about 5 times in the last year, all because my 11 year old son introduced me to it.
One of my favorite subtle jokes in this movie is the irony of Taika Waititi playing JoJo's imaginary Hitler friend, as a brown skinned man, wearing blue eye contacts, being that Hitler idealized blue eyed "Aryans" but was brown eyed himself lol, that's multiple levels of irony. Taika's a genius when it comes to irony. One of these days you have to check out the "What We Do In The Shadows" movie (and show).
The 2 main kids in this need to play younger versions of Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. Directed by either Taika Waititi or Edgar Wright of course.
To note, quite a few cast members were Jewish in this movie, including Taika himself (who played Hitler). Kind of awesome IMO!
Also Captain K is very against the Nazi army pretty much. He's trapped and forced to do what he does but wishes things were different.
Bulgaria was the only country to be at war with both the Axis and the Allies at the same time.
Finland also fought both the Allies (the Soviet Union) and the Axis during the war, although not at the same time. As part of the separate peace treaty with the USSR, they were required to kick out the Germans still in the country, which resulted in the "Lapland War."

Taika Waititi did an excellent job balancing the real life and fantasy elements. The song when Jojo and Hitler are first shown is a version of The Beatles song "I Want to Hold Your Hand". Jojo's mother would be considered part of the Resistance. Great reactions to this very well made and acted film, Ladies!!!!🎬👏👏👏👏

Here's a modern parallel connection between this movies depiction of the "Hitler Youth" young male military style training organization and now modern Russia. Putin has now begun a new program styled much like the Hitler Youth program of the mid 1930's to wars end for the school age children which was instituted about 9 months ago across Russia.
