      JoJo was never really a Nazi though that's the whole point of the film; he represents the many germans who either simply didn't want to be punished for "siding with the enemy" by going against the regime or were just brainwashed effectively into believing propaganda
      There's a big difference between people who fully believed in the cause and people who believed it because they were manipulated into believing it never mind the people who just did so out of fear of very real and brutal repercussions

    One minor heartbreaking detail I didn't notice on first viewing: In the scene where Captain K. saves JoJo from the firing squad, he's holding Finkel's cape. It's subtly implied in most of their scenes that they are more than friends, and the implication that Finkel has died, and Captain K. knows he'll be joining him imminently, adds another dimension of sadness and nobility to his end.

      Your point stands, but Hitler was not a vegetarian, just had diets from time to time. The popular myth that he was came from a desire to portray him as a "weakling". Which, I mean, he was, but vegetarianism was not the reason.

      @@MartinGrozny No the desire to portray him as a vegetarian, were out of the desire to appear strong and committed, and I quote Goebbels here "He abstains from these (Meat, Alcohol and Tobacco) because he is following the example of the great German, Richard Wagner, or because he has discovered that it increases his energy and endurance to such a degree that he can give much more of himself to the creation of the new German Reich." But there are mixed accounts on his diet. Some accounts and Doctors notes claim he were either fully or at least partly vegetarian (Excluding his favorite dish liver dumplings).

      @MartinGrozny 2 роки тому +4

      @@madselmvig1457 Riiight. I guess it's a fair interpretation, but you are literally quoting his personal minister of propaganda for why he did it. @madselmvig1457 2 роки тому +2

      @@MartinGrozny Why the bitchy tone? You agreed with me, so what is the issue. YOU stated that the myth were to make him weak, but that is not true. But that he were partly vegetarian is something we agree on. Oh you thought it were the allies that has started the myth. Ahh got it, no sorry it originated in Germany. And no most historians don't agree on anything, historians are not fiction writers, if it is not fully documented, they will suggest possibilities, however never claim something they have no merit to claim. I think you mean some analysts SPECULATE that it might have been due to health reasons, however again that is a speculation. And it were not done by historians.

    About Captain K and Finkle being in a relationship, if you look closely near the end when they are in their more flamboyant uniforms you can see pink triangles. A regular German officer showed up and asked the SS officer what is he doing. After listening to the SS officer's intentions to use the kids to fight the Russians, the German officer politely asked him to step outside. One gunshot later, the German officer came back and told the kids to go home.

      My German teacher told us a story of his father. He was maybe 16 years old, or you could better say he was in the same age as we in our German Highschool. He was recruited from Lübeck to go to the Eastern Front in 1945. The Red Army was not in Berlin (probably January). He marched with some other young men to Berlin. In his way were refugees and wounded soldier, which were fleeing from the Red Army. An older soldier with bandages asked them, where they want to go. They proudly said, to fight for Germany. He laughed and said the war is over run back home.

      During WW2 German children as young 12-13 were trained to be firefighters, after that they might be transferred to be AA gunners and search light operators and finally soldiers at 14-15. Those pulled from the AA guns around Berlin and sent to the front in 45 were replaced by BDM girls trained for a day or two by the former crews. During the battle of Berlin 5000 HJ children were told by HJ leader Axmann to hold a sector and some bridges. 3 days later there were 500 left still standing. Axmann survived the war. Died in 1996. Some as young as Jojo fought and died.

    Incredible film, showing the war through an innocent child's eyes, needed to be told to the next generation to ensure WE NEVER FORGET - would have been only nominated for an oscar if it was a serious drama, but the brave writers made it a satire, to make it more relatable and mainstream, and it won 14 awards, 5 oscar nominations and even brought one home. Unfortunately it was in theaters at the start of COVID which crippled box office sales. FYI, it was the studio's final demand for the movie, that Taika himself play Hitler, to ensure the audience understood it was a satire IMMEDIATELY - sometimes the execs are right. that decision paid off in spades.

    This movie is a wrecking ball. My mother was born and raised in Nazi Germany. Indeed she was the same age as Jo Jo and went through similar circumstances during the war. Boys were in the Hitler Youth and girls were in the female equivalent.
    She was regularly bombed from her home and her father, who was conscripted, never came home. It's actually amazing, but I never even saw a picture of my grandfather before last year. We have only one picture.
    As a Catholic family they were also not welcome, but not as persecuted as badly as Jewish people or gays etc.
    To this day she says the happiest day of her life was when the American tanks rolled into town. Just as happens at the end of this movie.
    As some say "the first country the Nazis invaded was Germany."

During the battle of Berlin 5000 HJ children were told to hold a sector and some bridges. 3 days later there were 500 left still standing.
