- This veggie burger is so tasty, even carnivores will love them! The ingredients are so simple you probably already have them. Original recipe does have gluten, but watch the video to find out how to make them gluten free!
Full printable RECIPE: icookandpaint.com/the-best-ve...
INGREDIENTS
50 grams carrot half medium
50 grams celery 1 small stalk
100 grams onion 1 medium
1 clove garlic
1½ teaspoons salt
2 cups quick cooking oats
½ cup whole wheat flour
1 teaspoon Italian herbs dry
½ teaspoon black pepper
1 - 19 fl. oz. can black beans drained but not rinsed
1 teaspoon soy sauce
INSTRUCTIONS
Using a food processor or a box grater, pulse or shred the carrot, celery, onion and garlic. Add the salt and stir together well, mashing the mixture so the salt can draw out liquid from the vegetables. Set aside.
In a large bowl combine oats, whole wheat flour, Italian herbs and black pepper. Mix until well combined. Add beans, vegetable mixture and soy sauce. Mash the beans with a fork before mixing everything together. Do not mash the beans too much. The mixture will be stiff, so feel free to add a spoonful or 2 of water. Do not add too much though or the burgers will be mushy.
Cover mixture and refrigerate for 4 hours or overnight. If you are in a hurry, at least 1 hour is necessary.
When you are ready to cook the burgers, shape the mixture into 6 patties. Heat 1/4 inch oil in a skillet on medium high and sear the burgers on each side for 45 seconds to 1 minute. When both sides are golden brown, reduce the heat to the lowest temperature and cover with a lid.
Cook low and slow for 15 minutes on each side, checking frequently to prevent burning. By the end of cooking, the burgers should be slightly darker than when they were seared and cooked thoroughly. Serve on buns with your favorite condiments.

I made these burgers and love them. I added mushrooms, and smoked paprika which added to the flavor. The best vegan burger I've tried yet.
That makes me very happy :) I have added mushrooms and agree it adds a lot. Thank you for the kind words and Happy Cooking!
What kind of mushrooms??
@@user-zx5xw4yw2e i don't think it matters much. Finely chopped, sautéed button mushrooms work fine for example!
I often use rehydrated and sautéed shitake since it's a practical pantry staple that lasts forever and I also like to add some hydration water for umami taste.
Just make sure, they are cut small enough but not mush. Mushrooms give patties that meaty, rubbery texture in a much more natural way than methylcellulose which nowadays often is in cheap meat replacement but has no nutritional value.
@@MaxMustermann-zr6kf Got it! Thanks so much for those tips. Can't wait to make a new veggie burger.
@@MaxMustermann-zr6kf Question please: Have you ever tried 'Dr Praeger's Perfect Burger (sold in the frozen section ) ? If so how'd you like it, and what do you think of the ingredients?
If you add 1/3 cup raw beet juice or shredd some raw beets into the mix it gives that meaty pinkness of cooked meats and lends a juiciness to your burger that is so satisfying
Perfect, gonna try it :7
That sounds like a good idea. I see a lot of other been burger recipes use some beetroot.
I'm going to make this and will add the beets as well
Thanks!👍🏻
Can also substitute chickpeas or do a mix for black beans. Add some roasted sesame oil in lieu of soya sauce.❤provecho
You are doing a great job for the society❤️ I was a hard core non vegetarian till I visited a farm and witnessed the horror of the dairy industry. The cow is inseminated painfully every 6 months so that calf is born. The calves are taken away immediately without a single drop of milk. The male calves are transported to the slaughterhouse to be killed on the very day. This process continues for some years till the cow is completely exhausted and later sold for meat. That’s the milk we consume. I literally had sleepless nights after watching the cows, their udders become so big they can’t even move. And they run to save their babies from going to the slaughterhouse.
Thank you for these recepies so that people can choose compassion in their plate instead of pain.
That is horrible. I always think of slavery when I hear how cows and chickens are treated. Especially cows because they have feelings and love their families.
Wow…thank u for this story.
This is why, if a person wants to eat meat and dairy, they need to buy from farms that do not have mass productions - they are the ones killing the environment as well. Grass fed meat and dairy from a humane farm is the way to go. I eat yogurt on occasion, but it must be grass fed or I won't eat it.
@@kelliea5729 Doesn’t matter if it’s a grass fed or not 😞a cow has to be pregnant multiple times a year and the calves are KILLED in the dairy industry.
I love a good veggie burger but honestly haven't had one in years because they are always soggy, crumbly or too much going on. Our daughter was coming out to visit and she doesn't eat any meat except for fish. I had five dinners to plan with a vegetarian option. I made these and they were delicious! My family LOVED them! She felt very special! Thank you so much!
I am so happy to hear that, thank you!
Well done vicks , it is difficult , but if it's out there it's findable .
Is fish meat? How to destroy the English language one post at a time. Pip Pip.
@@grangetowncardiff6935🙄
@@grangetowncardiff6935 yes, fish and other sea life is meat. What else do you call it? Pasta? Vegetables? Fruit? Sugar? Think!
I clicked on this video because we didn't have any meat in the house but wanted to make spaghetti. I'm a meat eater so this was the first time my wife and I had ever tried something like this and we didn't have high hopes (even went through the effort to keep them away from the spaghetti sauce just in case 🤣). This ended up being so good that we're planning more meals around this as a protein base. Honestly such a phenomenal video and right to the point. Fantastic work my friend. P.S. we made meatballs out of them and plan on making Salisbury steak tomorrow. We subbed bell pepper for the celery and seasoned with Tony Chachere's creole seasoning, salt, pepper and garlic powder
I’m so happy to hear it, thank you for the very positive feedback :)
Did you just break up the veggie burger after it was cooked, and add to the sauce?
That sounds really good. I'm going to try and make it into a meatless loaf, the bell peppers would round it out.

The green pepper made a huge difference for the better. I've been making this outstanding recipe every four days since I first came across it. Delicious! THANK YOU. 😊
I made this today. I used a lot more spices (closer to 4 tsp of various spices rather than 1). This is now my new go-to recipe. Thank you!
You’re quite welcome. Super glad to hear it! :)
Of the same spices in the video? Do share. :)
Yes, could you please share your spices?
I'd also love to know the spices you used 😊 Tired of my food being bland lol! Ty in advance!
@@kpoppaen8751 add more of the spices. Instead of 1 teaspoon try 2 or 3. It truly makes a difference.
Great recipe. I added mushrooms, used chick peas instead of black beans and chickpea flour instead of wheat flour and they came out perfect. So delicious! Thank you so much for the recipe. 🙏💛
So glad you enjoyed :)
The tittle claims “ gluten free”. So thanks for your tip using chickpea flour to make it actually gluten free.
Air Fryer! I used that instead and it worked. I cooked it at 350 for 15 min flipped and put dairy free cheese and cooked another 5. I think next time I will cook it at 325 for 20 min and then take it from there. Taste excellent and I will add more spices next time. Held together like no tomorrow!
I’m so glad to year that. Thank you! :)
Did you use any oil in the air fryer? I'd like to try it this way.
I was wondering if I could use the air fryer!!! This is much easier for the kids to use too. Thank you
You are absolute correct; they are not mushy and so not fall apart.
I divided the batch into three. In one I added taco spices and made a crumble. To another part I added more Italian spices and some anise (when I use to make Italian sausage, I would add some anise or fennel seed) and made meatballs. The third I made burgers just like yours. I cooked then in a cast iron pan until brown then placed them my air fryer for about 10 minutes. I added the crumbles to a salad for lunch today. It was so good and crunchy. The meatball is heated in pasta sauce and guess what, they don't fall apart. Love this recipe. I forgot to add, I didn't have any celery, so I used grated cauliflower.
That sounds so fantastic :) The sausage spices are a genius idea, so happy you’re enjoying the recipe :)
I'm always in search of a good veggie burger without paying a fortune for store-bought patties.
This looks fantastic and I cannot wait to try it.
Thanks for the recipe and presentation !
You’re very welcome, enjoy the burgers :)
You are right. I paid four Euros for two frozen veggie burgers and while just about ok they weren't anything special and way over priced. Shan't make that mistake again.
I love to cook and this recipe looks easy, nutritious and great value, shall do it today.
I saw that Lidl was selling some vegan burgers but again around £2 for just 2 burgers. No.
OMG, I would LOVE to see a meatloaf recipe based on this, complete with a savory veggie gravy! Meatloaf is a childhood comfort food that a lot of vegans miss, so a version of this recipe would be a joy. I'd serve it with mashed potatoes and string beans, just like I remember, but a meatloaf like this would be great with ANY sides. Thank you!
That sounds amazing, I will make that soon :)
Love your personable narrative and friendly attitude. Food looks great too! Gonna try it!
Thanks so much!
Thanks so much! 😊
Definitely giving this one a try! Looks so good and for real.

This was an excellent vegan burger and I've tried a lot of them. This one was moist and didn't fall apart. Today I'm making another batch but quadrupled the recipe so I would have more in the freezer. Thank you!
I am so happy to hear this, my pleasure :)
I've made black Bean burgers with another recipe and they're even better (and cheaper) with dtied beans cooked at home.
How did these freeze? Did you cook frozen or thaw first? Thanks!
@@HerbyWoman I cooked them first then froze. To thaw, I put them in the microwave for a minute or so, then in my airfryer to heat them through. That's just the way I do it.

Better late than never in this case. The vegan burger got me - it's the first time I have visited your channel. This looks like a great recipe. The grated mirepoix looks inspired and I will definitely add some mushrooms. Thanks for posting 👍🏻😊
Just got your video for 1st time. Really like your ingredients. Going to make these tonight- thank you. Your video came at the right time as I'm prepping food for upcoming week as I go into surgery tomorrow morning at 5:30am. A great big THANK YOU again. God bless you from grandma Katie in Oregon

I made this day before yesterday let it sit in the refrigerator 24 hours… very flavorful and I love the crunchy bits on the outside I added sweet yellow red and orange peppers I used spelt flakes and whole wheat spelt flour…💣
Thank you for this. I made them yesterday and they are probably the best homemade burgers I've had.
Wow thanks so much, glad you enjoyed! :)
I’m so glad this was the first VB video I watched ‘cause all the ones I’ve since watched describe much complexity and produce something that must cost ten bucks apiece! This guy’s process works well; the product is good.

I made them today. They are really great. I love this recipe, thanks for that!
So happy, thank you :)
Yes I would love to see more things to make with this recipe ☺️

This looks amazing. Can't wait to try it!
Mmmm. Looks yummy, and now I’m starving 😩 I’ll try this soon. Thank you for sharing
Many thanks for posting the recipe. I am definitely going to make this, as so many veggie-burgers are dry and taste like cardboard, and I am not very keen on some of the fake meat offerings.
Oats are amazing though, and a good source of slow-release carbohydrate.
I was once cooking a pasta sauce for a meal with friends but it was much too watery, so in desperation I sprinkled a couple of handfuls of porridge oats into the mix which worked brilliantly at soaking up the excess liquid.
Whilst we were eating it, one of the girls said "David, I thought you were Vegan?". I said "I am." So she said well why have you put chicken-mince in the sauce?"
She was totally amazed when I told her that it was really porridge oats.
I've tried seeral veggie burger recipes with various results, but these are the best tasting burgers so far. The texture is great and making them is so easy. I didn't even have to go shopping as I already had all I needed!
Thanks so much for your kind comment, so glad you enjoyed them!

Now good evening I cook and paint channel, first and fore most I want to thank you for your simplistic video, it was very easy to follow, and I thoroughly enjoyed the content.
Moreover, I was surprised that celery could taste so good in a burger 🍔 🍔, and thank you profusely for this tip. Also, I want to let you know, that I hopefully will try to make these burgers again with oaks and maybe 🤔 🤔 beans too, however I had a need to use up some of my birthday rice and used this instead of the oaks as well as gluten free flour a bit following your instructions of two cups of flours, and it came out absolutely delicious, well the first batch I used spring onions as a vegetable as I had no onions, so I used the vegetables I had, and it was amazing, and more importantly you are right, leaving it in the fridge to settle the dough, gives the dough time to marinade with all the spices and seasonings 🧂 🧂 as well as I found that when I cooked my first batch today 2nd October 2021, it was nice a firm as burgers 🍔 🍔 should be, so thank you for these tips, this gesture is much appreciated.
Lastly, I am now making my last batch as I had a lot of rice left over from august 2021, so I will definitely be leaving the dough to set overnight this time round and will let you know how this process has gone for me shortly.
This was surprisingly delicious. We ended up freezing the leftover mix and cooked them up later. Turned out phenomenal. Thank you for this. It is now a staple in our home😊
Wow I’m so glad you enjoyed them! Thank you for your positive feedback :)

I made these last night. Sub-ed chickpeas and added mushrooms; placed them on sourdough bread as I had no buns. Very good! Thanks for the recipe!
Wow sounds great! You’re so welcome :)
The texture looks absolutely amazing! I prepared these and added a bit of Marmite to the mixture to give it a little bit more Umami. Can't wait to try it out tomorrow.
I absolutely loved it! Never tried making veggie burgers with a mirepoix and this made a huge difference.
Vegemite is the vegan version of marmite
A suggestion is to incorporate coconut flour to the recipe.. it holds moisture very well and will make the burger more juicy.
Nice thanks!
I have been loving the burgers lately. Tried a few recipes. Can’t wait to try this one. They look delicious!
Hope you enjoy!
Would love to see a video with other recipes to use this mixture for!

So great! I'm gonna try it! Thank you 😄☀️
Tried it and they are yummy! Had a heck of a time getting them to cook all the way through, though. Turns out you can’t do the thing you can with meat, where you add water to the pan and cover it… that just makes the burgers soggy! I got the hang of it by my third batch, though.
I used a food processor instead of a grater. And I added barley grass powder for a more complete protein.
Overall, very happy with this recipe! And my kids were skeptical, but they actually liked the burgers too. This will be much cheaper than meat. So it’s a win.
I am so happy you and your kids liked them! Cooking them all the way is a challenge, hence the low and slow cooking :)
