I actually love the fractal design ads/skits you guys do, the innuendo is so obvious that it's almost quirky, and that makes it all the funnier.
Cowfaic'd Realm I was thinking the same thing!
Although those cases were frankly, some of the ugliest I've seen in a while.
Abhinav Praveen
I kinda like the flat one, seems like it'd be easy to hide away somewhere.
Cowfaic'd Realm does the 500w psu from evga has a 8pin for the gpu?
Frank Doukas yes it does. It has two 8 pins(6+2)
That has to be a golden sample, the power consumption, temperatures and that 1475MHz overclock are too impressive.
yeah really lucky of him... i got the RX480 Strix 8GB of Asus and only got 1430MHz at 1262mV stable
Not really, we have compared on some forum both 1060 and 480, multiple cards from multiple partners. For both of them MSI and XFX absolutely nailed it while Sapphire and Gigabyte turned out to be a big disappointment compared to previous generation, from voltage control to number of units with coil-whine and such.
I have one, I can't back up the overclock part because i don't need to overclock mine right now. But the temps and noise are really good
+Necris Where can I find this forum, would like to look at the results of the comparison?
Wes Tech Games I doubt that, it's waaay too early for the process to have matured.
I understand that MSI, XFX/HIS and especially ASUS went completely overkill on their RX 480 PCB's, but it's the combination of power efficiency, excellent temperatures and an absolutely ridiculous overclock (whilst still maintaining excellent efficiency), on AIR that makes me pretty much certain that it's not a retail sample in the video, it's cherrypicked silicon.
With that overclock achieved in this video, the XFX GTR RX 480 was consuming less power than my Nitro+ RX 480 OC with the BIOS switch on the 'silent' 1266MHz mode; that's crazzzy lol.
Today I changed this legendary card for a new RTX4060 (yes I know, I know). It was an honor to serve with this amazing piece of hardware. Countless movies, games and entertainment have been consumed at more than reasonable quality and speed. Times change and no king rules forever, but some will be remembered forever for their contributions and this KING of a card will always have a place in my heart.
Thank you Jay, for helping me pick this card over a 1060 back in the day. This exact video helped me choose when the topic was highly controversial. I feel that in time the RX480 proved to be the much better choice overall.
Have a great day everyone!
I also swapped this card out last year for a 6950xt. It served me valiantly and I bought it specifically because of this video from Jay!
Its nice to see another RX 480 performing, My nitro is running 1450mhz and 2150 on the ram stable.
Got two questions..
1) Do you get random times when fans don't want to spin? AMD drivers said my fans move at 2k RPM, Sapphire Trix said it's 0 (at same time, when fans didn't move) and could not make them move with those programs using manual setting (or any other)
2) When you turn your computer off, does it "turns on" for a few seconds again to turn off? I mean.. all goes off (all leds, GPU, CPU fans, and turns on for like 2-5 seconds (with no monitor signal) to turn off automaticly. I can't find the anwser on the internet, and it only does this with my RX in, R9 380x and R7 250 work fine and don't act like I wrote above.
No my card does nothing like that. I have a custom fan curve I created using Msi afterburner
***** Cheers
Did you increase or reduce the voltage? I've read lots of posts saying that the cards are way overvolted.
That sounds... worrying.
Wow, now that was impressive! It surpassed a water cooled RX480 using a standard fan?! And remained at the same TDP and temperature even at 1475 MHz?! XFX has made a dream card.
It wasn't showing any signs of stress from extra voltage (the temperature, power and frequency remained stable - not just stable, almost identical to factory settings) how did you possibly come up with that conclusion?
AMD Made a new revision of the cards, they Are a fucking lot better now with their tdp at 95 watt. they said they did it by making their 14nm proces a bit More refined. realy impressive because that would be More Power efficiant than Nvidia
***** Yeah, I definitely agree, imagine what the overclocking potential would be to actually move it to the current RX480's potential, we could be looking at 1500Mhz+
i'd doubt that. the gcn wasnt really good overclocker to begin which and i think that 1500mhz would be bending temps and power limits again. but i hope that i find myself wrong.
But the "bending point" would be when the TDP and core voltage are the same. And to get to that "bending point" you would need a pretty high overclock. Cooling wouldn't actually be a problem, because it would be using the same core voltage (since it is very efficient, and wouldn't need a boost because you would need to seriously bump up the clock speeds to reach the 150 watt standard) on the same sized chip. This is almost exactly how Nvidia prepared their Pascal lineup - same chip, much more efficiency and and higher clock speeds without sacrificing any cooling potential.
The Reference 480 doesn't suck! It actually blows!
....Get it? .....
***** It has a 'blower' style fan. Which isn't that good.
***** no?
It does both. It sucks and then blow.
LOL
TGC Jet does the 500w psu from evga has a 8pin for the gpu?
NVIDIA Fanboy: THEY ALL SUCK!
AMD Fanboy: YOUR JUST MAD THAT IM HOTTER THAN YOU
HELP! I'm legit dying
NVIDIA Fanboy: YOU CAN'T HANDLE ME BEING COOLER THAN YOU!
I wander if someone's already got the RX 480, an put a water block on it, an is getting better performance than Nvidia's 1070?
cant spell mad without amd
+ShanesEye nobody is doing that because a rx 480 is worse than a 1060. Are you high? 😂😂😂
Techporn ads are the best
That would be the case when you have a Shadman piece for your icon.
Hey Jay, I asked you to review this card a few months ago and you listened. Thanks for doing this review bro!!! I've been the proud owner of a RX 480 GTR Black Edition since it's release. Out of the box, I did the same benchmarks at stock speeds and my card never budged from 1338Mhz. I love these new XFX cards!!! The GTR Black Edition is factory overclocked at 1338Mhz out of the box.
Is it called an RX because it is a next generation on from the R9? Cuz X is ten. it would make sense.
Manus Yep
No shit capitain obvius
obvious*
Ronan numerals, yeah boiiiiii
+Ethan Bradberry virtual reality action
Seeing the power draw makes me think the whole PCI-e power draw issue really was a stunt to make the RX480 look bad.
It was actually AMD solved that with a single driver update.
Not really a stunt as much as advertisers do, what they usually do. Get on a band wagon.
Well I have a older mini atx board on a prebuilt pc and the refrence card does crash the system unless i underclock it. It was a xfx black with a factory oc tho. I had to bring it down to stock frequency. So it was not a stunt but works fine at stock frequency.
SageFox
Dude, this is the first one that isn't super bad compared to GTX 1060. I Really wanted 480, but they didn't release a single normal card. So I had to go with 1060. It seems like you're the fanboy here.
Same here. . . I was going to go with a rx480 but at the time of my purchase they were more expensive than my 1060 and straight up shitty overclockers. Plus, I run win7 ultimate so no dx12 for me.
God bless dude, that card is bonkers! I've been a pretty huge fan of XFX products for some time, and I'm glad to see that they've not disappointed yet again.
I definitely agree that the fans should have been RGB controlled if they wanted to go with the illuminated route like they did, but I think this was largely a by-product of not only an opportunity to make a bit of cash on the sale of LED fans, but also possibly a result of difficulty implementing RGB fan lighting in to a solution that also allows you to swap out/replace the fans more readily. Either way, the performance speaks for itself here... kinda want one for myself now x-).
Yes this card is great and i wnat it because its silent AND got good temps unlike my XFX R7950 Black Edition which is loud AND has bad temps. I already checked the thermal compound but it´s good and i also had to make a custom fan curve to get 86° under full load with 100% on the fans... But performance is great :D. Performance wise it should be a jump if got a RX 480 but i don´t know how big it is and i also don´t have money at the time :D
That really sucks about your 7950. Every other XFX card I've seen had some pretty darn good temps, but admittedly nothing as good as this RX 480 GTR model. As for the performance jump you'd see from an RX 480 over your 7950... it'd be YUGE!
My xfx 7950 runs cool as ice , people seem to forget every single Gpu is slightly different
I really appreciate we are a eeeeeeesee the eeeeeeesee the future ke and who is rs4seee eeeeeeesee eeeeeeesee eeseeeeeseeeeseeseeeee RR Martin Luther really appreciate if I understand RM fffff Terry treatment RR e is wear
Dude the ad at the beginning is hilarious. Keep up that sort of good work for sure.
Damn is this card sexy! 60°C under 88W with slightly OC from reference?! This is how AMD should have presented this GPU!
Man it blows hard...
As far as I can tell Jay's review is the only professional review of this RX 480 variant...
rougal Bernstein With a better power supply, a good cooling (current leakage increases with temperature) and the low voltage it sure is possible. Most cards just went all out with the voltage and gave 1.15V for 1.266MHz. Power draw could be drastically reduced with custom VCore on every RX 480, this one in particular seems to get it finally right out of the box!
It's super binned, check how low the voltage is at stock clocks.
Erevos85 Most 480s can be undervolted at stock without a problem. Binned or not, it's just smart for XFX to lower the voltage.
Well the question we should be asking about heat, is what is the ambient temp in the room? This will affect the temp of the card, plus, as we can see the card is mounted outside tha case. I imagine it would run much cooler than your average case bound card because of this.
Dear +JayzTwoCents
Could you do a comparison with the other RX 480 such as the Sapphire Nitro+ and the Powercolor Red Devil RX 480s? Perhaps add MSI and Asus in the fray as well. Cheers m8
I also want to know which RX 480 is better. The Sapphire RX 480 Nitro+ or the XFX RX 480 GTR. As well as, the difference between the GTR and RS trims.
Martín Varela I see. Thanks for the info, I was so confused by XFX's RX 480 lineup.
XD yes please
I had my eye on the Sapphire Nitro+ model myself.
I hate XFX but this card looks like it's a great performer.
The reason i stay away from XFX cards is that back when they were an Nvidia partner I bought an XFX GeForce 8600GT and after awhile 5 caps blew on the card. XFX promised a lifetime warranty but when I went to contact them over it they refused to honor the warranty and i had to buy a new card. The cap issue on XFX cards was pretty well known too. It happened to quite a few people.
For me, Xfx works really great. I have an 280x and never gives me a problem at all. First gpu 'high end' at the time, when some one take me for a job, Im think to buy a 1070
This card is a miracle, my red devil with the new bios is the only way i could get the advertized clock at 1330 mhz, however the temperatures easly hit 80 c. Dissapointed with powercolour...
the problem is your new bios, it's added to much voltage to your card
Problem is the Red Devil having one of the worst custom PCBs of a 480. Sorry.
Powercolor also has a crappy PCB lol while this XFX has the most powerful PCB...and I have a Powercolor Red Devil too lol
acnfanmanin
oh come on, you dont even know what power phase is ?, go to the "actual hardcore overclocking" channel for real expert evaluation about pcbs
somebody made the exact opposite post about a devil an hour before you posted. The Network posted his works great.
I think this is the 1000 000 000$ worth prize of Sillicone lottery. I've never seen such an amazing, golden cheap.
Get used to it, sucka
Dude, it's amazing. I want that card. My R9 290 has really shitty oc ;__;
i feel. You my r9 290 temp goes around high 80's when playing Overwatch on High settings. Its loud.
Crafty Coin Well, i'm watercooling mine but still can't push it over 1130 core. And with +100mV.
i have a reference r9 290 (watercooled) too.
@ 100mV+ i reach 1180, @ 150mV+ it goes up to 1210.
ram is still stable @ 6000mHz, but nothing special at all since most people reach that oc lvl on a r9 290.
I have the XFX RX480 GTR Black Edition 1338Mhz boost card. Super pleased with the thermals, noise levels, and power draw. It sticks to the boost clock 99.9% of time under load, dropping by 1 or 2mhz under only torture testing. All gaming and standard benchmarks run full blast boost clock. After the clusterfuck that was the reference design, I'm super pleased with this card.
part of the reason this was done is cause the vast majority of Card RMAs or failures is due to faulty fans. Sapphire also c
came up with a removable fan design so they could just ship a pair of fans to the end user rather then do the full RMA process. In the end it is way cheaper for the company and better for the consumer. now the fans would of been RGB yes However swap-able fans gave them a good way to make a little extra cash. All in all cannot knock them...it was a smart business move!
Let's hope this wasn't a special hand picked card, cuz I'm looking at buying one of this cards
lol
if it is then you will soon realize
The ASIC dominate overclockability, they sent him a really good one.
TheLawnWanderer ASIC and overclocking stability are 2 different things. Higher ASIC quality gives you lower temps but that GPU can still crash at 1300MHz for example
Karavusk ASIC is the die, the chip, I'm not talking about ASIC quality.
You can get a good die, or a bad die, one with higher power consumption, or lower power consumption depending on the leakage,"ASIC quality"
My last XFX card was an HD 7970 Radeon XFX Black Edition before I bought the ACX3 GTX 1070 EVGA. Best Radeon card I'd ever owned. Overclocked like a beast and ran stable! Am glad to see they are listening to consumer concerns about aesthetics and whatnot in this day and age of ultra customisation. Good step in the right direction.
Jay how come you didn't digress?
xD
lol
Jay, could you share the noise levels please ? :) I was really waiting for that, cause the card looks pretty impressive.
MusiCover
yes ?
What MusiCover was asking was if Jay could share if the card gets loud when under load and idle - not the music.
I have this Rx480 card, I haven't heard the fan much compared to my stock case fans that are around 30 dba when full blast. I don't have an dba measurement but it isn't very loud. However my first couple of time powering the rx480 it did start running it's fans at full blast it was a little noisy but i have had that issue occur since then.
I saw another review on this card and it was really quiet. i would say as good as msi or better.
Damn I really wanted a heater this winter, better look elsewhere
lol
Same
this is the card I bought. happy with it. might buy another
correction. mine is the 1333 card
might as well delete your comment now
Can you OC please i wanna know how much you get with the black edition
Hey, you bought this XFX GTR model? Could you tell me if it's noisy? My current XFX 370 is kinda noisy.
+TheKingston16 kind of. not too noisy. but it is not low noise by any means
that fractal design commercial was amazing
This video made me buy this card. JayzTwoCents is my first priority Tech channel. Love his personality
I want to see this benchmarked in crossfire!
this specific card is not crossfire capable.
yup sorry to let ya down
Ronald, stop trolling. Ofc it's crossfire compatible.
im not trolling its not crossfire
its compatible with the amd apus but thats it
I might just get this card. I like that the fan does not come on until needed. Big plus in my book.
You literally just sold me this card. I was already thinking about a 480 and now I know which one to buy 100%. Thank you
I have a feeling that this card is super binned... 1475mhz fuck me!
ya higher than the waterblocked refrence
some guy actually getting stable 1500mhz oc on sapphire 480
sapphire iuck
Regardless its nice to see XFX making something decent again. I think last time i thought 1 of there products was great was back in the 5K series graphic cards
this XFX version is probably going to be my next GPU..... 1475MHZ is really a lot,and it is cooler and using less watts than my actual "kinda old" card
They said to me "290 sucks, get 780 for $100 more"... LOL. What a mistake would it be.
tbh this xfx card has impressed me, iv had bad experiences with older xfx cards overheating but looks like they did a lot of things right this time, It looks REALLY nice and has a backplate, stays cool, and overclocks like a beast.
I like! I think I finally found my successor to my r9 290, it's reference, and I'm really sick of the amount of noise it makes. I'm more than fine with the performance still, but DAMN it's loudness is getting on my nerves!
If you had a left over liquid cooler, you could just get a kraken g10 or something.
Or get one of those aftermarket coolers.
thelonestranger777
unfortunately nope. it's actually kinda funny, the card I bought new from gigabyte went unstable about a year in, and the reference card I bought from a bitcoin miner is the one that I'm using years later.
I would put my broken one's aftermarket cooler on, but it doesn't fit properly.
i bought a reference r9 290 and did slap a watercooler on it at day one to avoid acoustics and to get better oc on it.
never had a problem since the first day which is now almost 3 years ago.
i keep it till zen is out, then i gonna make a new build with am4+ and hbm 2.0 in it :)
An rx 480 really isn't that far above an r9 290 maybe only about 10%. It'd be a more lateral move. Probably be better to save your money and wait for whatever the rx 490 is going to be.
*****
ah, funny thing is I had 3 gtx 770s bust on me over the years. 2 were msi and 1 was a gigabyte. The only brand I can trust now is EVGA since their warranty policy is amazing. You can open the card and do whatever, as long as you put it back together before you send it out youre golden.
So i bought the MSI RX480 8G GamingX and as soon as I installed the MSI Gaming App (I know, I know third party Software etc etc, but I wanted to use the Color-Feature since I have an open horizontal case) I experienced blue screens, black screens, driver crashes and random 100% fan-speeds. Even with Gaming App deinstalled, my max OC was 1400MHz with +100mV and still unstable in Firestrike (even on stock-speed i had crashes with various games). The Temperatures were great with max. 70°C on OC (default fan curve) but a power consumption far beyond 150watts (211watts peak). Then I watched this Review, got excited, sent my MSI RX480 back and bought this one.
BUT, (as many of you already posted here) this card was probably selected to reach this high frequency, so I bought the "Black Edition" (talking about typical custom-card names ;-). And what can I say, I'm very happy with my choice, without touching the Voltages, I ran Firestrike 3 times in a row without Problems on 1430MHz core clock and 2250MHz Memclock, average Consumption 125watts, peak consumption 170watts, temperature 73°C on default fan curve (fans not noticeable).
Sooo thanks @ JayzTwoCents for that review ;-).
PS: sadly the exchangeable fans are not yet available in Germany :-(
Jay your ads are the best lol
Thanks for the review. I bought an XFX RX 480 GTR Black Edition 3 months aago and i'm very happy with it. No problems with all actual games in FullHD while you don't want to play in 4k i think. 1440p gaming should also be well playable but i don't have a 1440p display for testing it. I think i need to change the standard fans with the led once for a better look. :)
m00nwa1ker if you want 1440 performance use VSR on display setting on radeon setting
it can renders 1440p on your 1080p monitor at least you can test it out
wish you had the sapphire to test
THANK YOU!!! Almost every review says that it is silent, while it is not, at least at room temperatures over 25 degrees.
I've got one. Had it since release and haven't noticed any of these issues.
i do too but it gets hot maybe you dont notice your temps
hitman74 Got GPU-Z open all the time and haven't seen it get that hot at all. Maybe I just got lucky.
From what I've read, the xfx gtr is actually better than the nitro+. I'll be buying the xfx gtr, basically because it's the cheapest and the design is not bad.
I love the ad at the beginning! Such a good brand and the innuendo was hilarious.
Also, I have bought this card from Newegg for 209, shipped, including a 30 dollar mail in(lame but enough to be worth it) instead of 289. Outrageous price to performance on this one!
Jay, I've learned so much from watching your channel, thank you. I can't wait to overclock this potent piece of hardware!
mine works fine ;P dunno what the beef is all about rx 480 is a beast
STEEZEonTRIGGERED
Mine works a treat love it ;)
well the first couple of aftermarket cards suck like the the rx480 red devil, the whole not being MSRP at launch or being available (but this year every card has had that problem) , the whole PCIE power issue, and the reference card that was pathetic for any overclocking and the only options for 2 months
i got a sapphire seems to do the trick for me ? shame about no back plate thats my only gripe with it
i have always known sapphire had made good cards. but the only cards i had seen XFX are for the 460,470, and pervious version of the 60,70 line up and they always looked cheap
Lmfao, AMD for life, cause I'm poor
TIL 60C under load is "hot".
the card went 64 overclocked...
lol
U need a heater cus u live in the artic circle?
+LeFlavius_NL u dont get the joke bro
XFX has been the vendor i've used for my past 3 generations of cards, they are always super top quality. Currently using their R9 390 DD Black Edition.
I'm sure that u got a selected one. I had 3 different rx480. They needed 1,25volt for 1450 mhz and the power consumption in games was minimum 130W (without overclock),
and in fire strike with 1450mhz it was 230W minimum. I think u got the best from 1000.
These come from retail sampling. Just because you lost the lottery doesnt mean that this was a hand picked card.
I belive you, but truth hurts me...
Now I have an MSI, but i had an xfx... it could't run FS with 1400mhz/1,25v. I think my msi vrm (and the 8pin) will bottleneck to 1,3v+ and 1500mhz+ :D :/
It'll also be Superior to nvidia in a year when we are all in dx12 and working on dx 13. Last time I heard, nvidia doesn't' power any consoles.
Nope, its not the architecture, its the manufacturing process. Also AMD GPUs are highly TLP oriented, so they don't need crazy clocks to perform (Unlike nVidia GPUs which rely on ILP to perform and hence, crazy variations of performance according to the type of code)
RX 480 Red Devil > Asus Strix > Every other 480. My devil never goes above 55c
but can yours oc this much ? NOPE
XFX > red devil > Sapphire> and then asus strix
Strix RX 480 is probs the best one on the market
Agreed, my second card came in and not much higher in temps for the top card.
Malcom N. Does your Asus Strix have coil whine ? Mine has a tiny bit
MTF Mixed I actually have the RX 480 Red Devil in crossfire. I hear coil wine only during the loading screens of Unigine Heaven and Valley benchmarks but not in games. Though I've always heard coil wine during those screens with every card I've had.
cheers for the vid jay, i have an RX 480 GTR OC card on it's way and i'm damn impressed with the power draw and the fact that it has an 8 ping power connection. yeah, it was kind of an impulse buy, its just good to see I ordered the right one lol
Has Sapphire sent you a Nitro 480 yet? If not I'm going to bug Sapphire Ed.
i'm curious about the nitro+ too
I usually only buy Sapphire when it comes to Radeons.
This one is really the best RX480, Sapphire's cooler isn't that nice tbh and I am an Sapphire fan aswell
Joker Productions did a review of the Nitro wasn't too impressed by what he got.
I have the 470 nitro. my highest temp so far is 74c. but it stays around 60c most of the time.
We need ambient aluminum in our lives.
Just ordered this beast, upgrading from a Radeon 7870. Thanks for the review to help me decide on the right card in my budget Jay!
Hey J,
I bought this same card and I can do 1475 in benchmarks. BUT in games it is not stable, give it a try. I can only do 1425 in games. I know I know, every card is different but could you make a video showing the card in games and what is the max stable overclocking you can get? I very much doubt it's gonna be stable at 1475. Thanks!
Keep it up!
I can’t get mine past 1377
How does an air cooled card overclock better than a water cool3d one?...
silicon luck
XFX uses copper heat sinks, higher quality fans, expensive thermal paste, and cooler voltage regulators. It adds $25 to $30 more to the cost of the card though but worth it in my opinion. Yes I own 2 xfx cards and wish they made nvidia ones.
The implementation of those solutions I imagine. Poorly integrated liquid cooling vs. a high quality air cooling solution. Same reason a shitty aio cpu cooler would perform worse than a high end tower cooler.
XFX DID make Nvidia cards.
And then they decided to start making ATI cards too.......
how a person that has several years messing with water cooling can poorly implement a water block on a video card?
Thanks @JayzTwoCents I recently bought this graphics card because of this review over other rx480's. I have not been disappointed so far. This graphics card stays cool and preforms great.
Fantastic card.much better than dead gtx 1060 dx11 wooden memory cards.
lmfao "wooden memory"
dx11 has all the best games, stay mad kid
Enjoy dx11 while you can "kid"
Saints Row does the 500w psu from evga has a 8pin for the gpu?
yes
Nvidia is Mainstream! Nvidia does cheap Tricks to make AMD look bad... Also AMD contributed to invent new Technology like HBM. If Nvidia "invented" it, it would have been Nvidias Technology *ONLY*!
Blah blah blah blah AMD fanboy blah blah blah Muh crappy AMD blah blah blah bad bad evil Nvidia blah blah blah
The Warpten Show maybe he is an amd fan boy but you are an nvidia fan boy i personally prefer nvidia but amd isn't shit its jist as good as an nvidia gpu.
vdochev don't you just hate fan boys they think their company is the best even if you can prove them wrong in every single way they are completly equal.
I mean this is a serious topic. If nvidia keeps on being like this, one day games will be exclusive for nvidia cards. We don't want that to happen
@@Warptenlololol blah blah...who is the fanboy now? :D happy ray tracing....if you ever find them call me :DDDDD the only thing you will find are aliens on the screen :DDDDD
I bought this gpu for my first gaming pc. What a gread card! I always used my laptop and had to play everything on the lowest graphics possible and now i can play everything with the settings as high as i want! (And every game i tried had 60+ fps on at least high)
The only thing i recommend to do is changing the fan speed, it made way too much noise and i couldnt find any problems after setting it to 2700rpm max.
XFX was my favorite green team card till they pulled out of nvidia been EVGA ever since
They also made the best looking MOBO's of that time
steamy
Yea, big mistake imo. EVGA basically turned into the gods of gpu's now.
well XFX was a Nvidia exclusive...but wanted to build Nvidia AND Ati (like Asus/MSI)... Nvidia did not agree and froze them out
depending on how things play out, that could turn out to be Nvidia's loss.
Fuck I watch too many tech channels because I don't a pc
is that sad?
Rize - Agario yes
iX NuclearFX oh ok
kinda yea, but you will know how to build one!
same
Same I don't have a custom built pc yet, I'm looking forward towards my first custom loop build. Wish me luck :)
1060>480 anytime.
VaJohn except in Vulcan, dx12, crossfire, and hit man like titles
VaJohn NVIDIA FANBOY CONFIRMED
1060 Great for dx11 and under and opengl games, but rekt by a cheaper card in vulkan amd dx12
trevor roddy And more power consumption, hotter and bad drivers.
more money > less money anytime.
6:22 "Not even one Megahert!". Didn't know Megahertz was plural...
I bought this card based on your review. I managed to get 1405 Mhz overclocked with temps in the mid 70s with the fans running at 65%. It's a bit noisy at that speed, so I may either lower the clock or let the temps sit around 85C. I'd count this as a silicon lottery winner.
I have the xfx gtr black edition factory clocked at 1338, these temps are not achievable by me. With stock fan curve on Heaven with the settings from this clip, temps go 77-82 C (fans are at 2200-2500rpm). With fans set to ~85%(~3200rpm) all the time, temps dropped to 75-77C, open case even with front panel off I got 69-72C. Ambient temperature ~25C. The card is good though, 1338mhz never flactuated, and the power consumption never went over 120W (peak, average it was about 105W), its just hotter than what is shown here.
One more thing, many end users report almost the same temps as mine, and other review sources report temps like the ones in this clip. Pretty interesting.
TLDR: Good card, but i am a bit disappointed with the temps, cuz i bought it after watching this and expected lower temps.
P.S. I play mostly world of warcraft, fully maxed out setting, 1080p, with stock fan curve, the card sometimes goes to 86 C in open world(and my pc case has pretty good ventilation).
Indeed it is more than odd... on the contrary, reviews on internet always told bad about the rx 480 8gb sapphire nitro+ and said it was hot and quite loud. Actually, i bought this sapphire one and guess what ? I overclocked it to 1360 mhz core clock (0 fluctuation) without bumping voltage nor power limit and the temps never get hotter than 73 degree c with very quiet fans (1300-1400 rpm max)...
Topchiisky i'm in the same situation, i got the xfx gtr xxx 1288 mhz after watching this video and my idle temps are 48-55c, on load using heaven are always 75-78 and with open case 68-71 using the default fan profile. I just can believe how can someone archieve
Yeah, and whats the moral of the story, for me this is the third time i am disappointed by amd product, so i may forget that they exist when upgrade time comes again.
JayzTwoCents, do you think we can do anything to improve our situation here?
Just a quick update..... the fricking card started to whine recently, which got louder with each day. As of today under load i can hear the card whine from 0.5-1 meters with the case closed, which is under the desk i work/game on. I am contacting the vendor with plans of returning it.
Have you considered building a crossfire rx 480 system?
just get a 1070 lol
I just wanna see a crossfire build not build it myself :P
ua-cam.com/video/cVVJPbFRDEc/v-deo.html
Thanks Jay
I'm considering it and hooking it up to a lg ultrawide one of their new 144hz 2560x1080p panels. :)
Thanks Jay, looks like the most promising 480 yet! Great temps
rx 480 is a fucking beast for the money!!
How the hell did Jay get 1475 mhz on this card?! My card can't even stay at 1340 mhz without crashing. This makes me kinda sad :(
@Dev Fpv Have you increased the stock voltage of 1.060 to 1.150?
@Dev Fpv weird
I love your commentary and your flow, knowledge is excellent and passing information gets a 10/10,seriously i have just discovered you.Keep it up.
I'm thinking to buy RX 480 or GTX 1060, but I'm still waiting for the result of the giveaway to appear.
I bought the rog 1070 mainly because I have a g-sync monitor but I'd rather have these if I hadn't committed to nvidia.
i recommend the 1060 6gb card
in what way can you prove this?
Yeah I think so, the dx11 is much better when it comes to amd but dx12 is still fresh to developers making it longer to wait for more improvements in the future.
No sli support on 1060 is a huge deal breaker imo.
I've been looking into this card and I'm honestly surprised there are no green hard swap fans. Do you know if they will be releasing different colors at a later date? Seems very odd that they only have blue, red, and white hard swap fans.
Nevermind, just watched a video from XFX saying they're planning on releasing more colors.
I saw the video about the green fans too, but haven't seen them out yet either. I'm actually surprised they didn't do an RGB version for these cards, as that would have been pretty awesome. I do like mine with the blue fans though.
Just got a Rx 480 4 gb. It isn't the greatest but good for what I can afford being a dad with a shit job. Love watching your videos. They make me want to do more with my rig
whats the model number of this 480? is it the XFX RX-480P8LFB6? Or other model?
Pretty sure they send jayz the best perfoming out of bunch
Mine never reach that kind of speeds :(
yea. most rx 480s OC between 1350-1400
btw have you upped the power limit ?!
I've done everything
Garry Chen what speeds are you reaching ??
New card, or old card? The newer chips from the past month or two overclock way better than the launch cards.
hi jay i watched this video when it first went on youtube and loved the way this card preformed so much that i bought it 3 weeks ago and i am loving this card the fact that it never goes over the 65c mark is so good as i run an 1080p rig i have set the globule settings to fps to go no higher than 60fps most of the time the fans are so quite is great the only thing is that it should be sold with an colour on the fans because i just can't bring myself to purchase them.
But i will say the card is great and worth buying thanks jay from the UK
RIP 1060... A RX 480 at 1410 already smokes it, at 1475 just rip. videocardz.com/review/his-radeon-rx-480-iceq-x2-roaring-turbo-8gb-review
who cares
Consumers who value their money.
If you play games in DX11 or older it will destroy a 480 and about the same performance in DX12. It really comes down to what games you will be playing
It's more as a generalization thing... The 1060 wins in DX 11/OpenGL on average while the RX 480 wins in DX 12 on average... (Comparing stock) However that's just averages. The RX 480 wins in BO3 and that's a DX11 game. The 1060 wins in Rise Of The Tomb Raider and that's a DX 12 game. It really does come down to what games you play.
Well my galax exoc 1060 does 2100mhz without adding voltage, that would pretty much put it on top of the 480 for all but one score on your link.
is this an exception or all xfx 480 are this good at OC?
eltano06 this one is an exception
im only able to get mine to 1375 (this same card) so i think he got a lucky one
i have same model i can oc to 1500mhz stable
Probably has the new chips from the past month or two, all new 480s can probably OC this far.
sam t RX-480P8DFA6 ( but check it to make sure )
I watched this after buying that GPU for my first PC build and I'm even more excited for when it comes in the mail tomorrow YAAAAAy
I have to ask since I'm wondering after reading this rumor:
wccftech.com/amd-polaris-revisions-performance-per-watt/
Can this card you had in test potentially be one of the first batches of "new revision" Polaris?
Probably, but don't expect to see it in the consumer market just yet.
It looks like it is, if not it's on a good way. This card is really good. Just imagine that Fury Pro! I would really like to see AMD go all in High-End gpus.
My card gets 16414 gpu score in firestrike at 1500/2250 :)
XFX will be my next card to, they make great cards. The black editions rock even more.
My R9 390X ( normal edition ) gets +15000 Gpu score on fire strike. 1250-1750 oc on water.
meh. pretty disappointing in general, i had more hopes for the 480. i paid 250 for an itx 6 gig 1060 and it smokes the 480.
not in dx12
for all the games that run DX12, right?!?! By the time DX12 is relevant, 480 and 1060 will be long surpassed.
Not in dx12
or in the near future of games, its hit or miss if your trying to decide on a 480 or 1060 right now. Its possible that in new games the 480 will start destroying the 1060. new as in next year or 2. I got a 1070 instead but i have a feeling ill be kicking myself in the ass soon.
Not in dx12
is a radon R9 380 any good?
compared to to the 470 no. sorry but it is cheap :)
Pretty old but great for budget builds but if you have $600+ budget get a RX 460 or 470 or 480
jar puppy yes
If you can get one considerably cheaper than a 470, yes.
+InspiratioNation No, would not recommend a 460, its too weak for the price.
Just bought the 4GB version of this on Amazon for $170 (including a $20 rebate). This review was a huge help. Thanks Jay.
He reviewed the GTR version (8gb) not the RS.
Yep. I realized they're quite different just after ordering. Hopefully the board and cooler works just as well. I'll run the benchmarks.
Just ran the Firestrike stress test on the RS. Temperatures stuck to 70C. Looks like it's a similar board minus some RAM chips, but a much different heatsink. Still no regrets at $170.
lol xfx sent the best rx 480 they had. that card goes into 80s easily when overclocked and average is 1350mhz oc
i agree with temps but mine goes at 1460mhz stable. ( i have it for 6 months)
Dimitris Koumpardas pretty lucky man. Mine is only 1330 stable been researching a lot seems the average 1350. I've been thinking of unlocking the bios but i might just leave it
Beyond lucky. I get 1330mhz and the increased temps are not worth the 1-2 fps increase. I have it in a node 202 now and the thing throttles. I've never had a card thermal throttle in my life. Granted it's a node 202 but still wtf
myjy cards vary everything has differences.
If someone could help that would be nice my friend has a i7 6700k processor and a Msi gaming x 1060 6gb and for some reason his graphics card is only using about 400 MHz and running all his games really slow any ideas?
tell him to flash his bios. also try a couple of other drivers
He has the cable connected to the Card and not to the mother board?
maybe the connector is broken, maybe the card itself
did he install drivers? :o
I have the RX 470 version... I LOVE it. Quiet, absolutely beautiful LED fans.
Why are there no gaming benchmarks...
I had this card and I did send it back because it was too loud and it run hot. Now I have the MSI Rx 480 gaming x and it is silent and cool. I can not recommend to anyone the XFX GTR...
Can't believe your card is that good...XFX must have send you a special one...
Hello ... could you give more details? I could not decide which of these vcard go, if the XFX GTR or MSI Gaming X, I'm interested in your experience. (Sorry for my english :P)
The XFX RX 480 GTR has performance vise the same as the MSI Gaming X but the difference lies within the cooling and noise. I used the XFX with open and closed PC case. With the open case the XFX got to about 78° Celsius and the fans were spinning around 3000rpm. The fans are pretty silent till 2000rpm but after that you think an air plane is taking off. With the case closed I got to 81° Celsius and again 3000rpm on the card unfortunately I had to send it back and went with MSI. So the MSI with closed cased gets to max 75° Celsius and fans run around 1800rpm, that card is so good. I played with overclocking settings and have not reached the 80° Celsius but a slightly higher fan curve to keep it cool obviously now its hearable but still not annoying. I tried to undervolt the XFX and it just failed on me it still was loud and hot if someone is interested in that. The reason I bought the XFX first was that I've seen videos on UA-cam and reviewers said it's a great card and it was cheaper. But when I had mine it was the opposite and people in different forums where complaining about the same issue.
Gracias... iré por la MSI sin pensarlo, ademas en mi país tiene mejor garantía, entonces no tengo nada mas que pensar al respecto :)... de nuevo gracias ;)
No its other way around you got sent a bad one . No matter the branding ever single card is different even if they are all XFX. EXAMPLE if you asked for another xfx card it might have run cooler and faster then MSI card its all luck . MSI is also overpriced shit enjoy it you seem like an idiot
the fractal adds you two do are great.
Just received my GTR. ASIC is 71.3% and during the Heaven benchmark card never dropped below 1288 mhz, used a max of 91 watts, and temps stayed in the mid 60's C. All results recorded with MSI Afterburner and no tweaks to anything. Not exactly the unicorn card Jay received but I'm pretty happy with the results.
Jayz. I'm going to buy one of those just because of the fans. I tend to run the gfx for a long time. The fans on my sapphire 6950 are close to dying and changing them is a pain. Since i'm going to stick with 1080p the 480 is very future-proof and the swappable fans are a bliss
wow ! speechless!!!!damn jay i think XFX this time nailed it more then sapphire o.O!!!!!
An absolutely fantastic card. Decided to do a small test myself, by mining ETH for a night. Case fans set to minimum voltage of 5V, card undervolted by 36%, powerlimit lowered by 5%, and the core slightly underclocked. After all this, the difference in hashing speed was a mere 0.8 MH/s, out of the 25 MH/s max (less than 4%). The card's ASIC quality is 80.2 %, so that might have something to do with it.
I ran the mining software for over 12 hours, and the temps never went above 60 C, even while the GPU usage was a stable 100%, with the average being roughly 59 C. Fans were stable at 42 % / 1500 RPM, with the average power draw being only 63 watts(!!!). My HD 7870 I had been using since 2012 would draw almost 300 watts when gaming or mining. An absolutely fantastic card for sure. I only game at 1080p, and get a stable 60 FPS on Overwatch on epic settings with everything maxed out. I'm on Windows 7, so no DX12 for me.
A year and a half ago I knew I wanted an RX480. I ended up choosing this one because of this review. I love it to this day. Card kicks ass! Had to get a brace to combat sag but the brace actually looks cool.
Always been a fan of XFX cards, glad to see they get it.
ok i gave this a thumps up just becase of the case commercial at the beginning that was to cool and love it so much thanks for the laugh keep up the good work
I love your videos! finally good to see a great rx480. Thanks for another awesome review man! keep on making great videos.
super excited to get my hands on this card this tuesday. thanks jay for the review.
So glad u did the review on this one jay picked up it like a week ago at Best Buy after the guy there was telling me he thought this was the best rx 480 u could get I thought I would need to water cool it but after ur unboxing review I'd say nvm ? Thanks jay recently new to ur channel but ur one of my gotos if I have a question I can UA-cam on ur channel
Thanks , u helped me chose gpu . Came today and I must say ... best money ever used ! Ur review helped me and made me buy it so thanks again .
that is what i call a SILICON LOTTERY right there!
They made fan blade changing available because they can introduce different pitches for the fan.. One for Multipurpose, one for ULTRA QUIET GAMING and one for high performance
Purchased this card about a month ago, and I have to say, the performance is amazing. For under $300 you get amazing performance. I play all my games maxed out and average above 100 fps. Great card in my opinion.
