- 3 hour bench session in 30mis. I ran 3d Mark 11 and HWBOT Ungine Heaven in both DX11 and DX9.
I didnt cut out the card crashing at all so you can see some of the issues i had and where the limits of the card are on the stock bios.

Very nice Video man very useful. I was already about to buy it because of what I have heard and seen from the oc potential and this Video seals it.
good. i havent tried the new drivers yet because my modded bios doesnt let the driver see it, but i will get around it at some point :P should get better performance on the newer drivers.
+Lawrence Timme So today i recived my gtx 1070 FTW and it has the same problem like the other ones before. The same coil whine, now just thinking is a bad combination with my psu...it can not be posible such a thing, some many cards with the same noise.
I m using a Thermaltake SPS-730MPCBEU Smart SE and now i am thinking to thake something else!
The noise it s coming from the GPU itself. Even when i make that windows score test !
What do you think?
very nice scores m8! do you use stock bios on it?
yes this was all done on the stock bios. I am working on a custom one atm.
do you have any improvements ? i struggle with stability every time i mod any part of the bios
Gregg Duderino McLazos well just raising the limit of the memory would be a big improvement if you are still stable at 2250. some people are getting to 2300.
Hello Lawrence!! can you tell me please, does your gtr whistling? cause yesterday i've received mine from CU and her inductors are whistling and i can hear it very clear! please give me feedback on this question, cause i doubt about replacing it on same GPU or for another model..
that is coil whine, neither of my cards have this issue. and tbh i havent heard of any rx480's with coil whine at low fps. it seemed to be a bigger issue with the 900 series nvidia cards and the r9 furys tbh.
I'm having trouble with this card. The games freezes (happens with heavy games, like witcher 3, battlefield 4. League of Legends and Paladins won't even make the fans spin) and after 10min or so of gameplay, I have to manually shutdown the pc.
I have a RX 480 XFX GTR 8gb, running 16.12.2.
WHAT SHOULD I DO?
I WAS OK WITH MY 970, I JUST WANTED TO GIVE AMD A TRY :'(
What the hell how do u keep these temp i have the same graphics card which min get 90 c
Try replace thermal paste it's probably old and dried out
i have the very same card as you do but cant even clock it to 1375 by the same way you do it. what do you think could be the problem?
@Lawrence (or if anyone else has this same card), did I see you stats show 1375 Mhz with +50% Power Limit, and your card was only drawing a MAX Power Spike of 144Watts???
Man what the heck is wrong with my card; I just did a run on my card with Heaven (a Brand new OC Sapphire Nitro+480) at 0mV, +15 Power Limit, 1375Mhz core clock, 65c Temp and my GPUZ and Trixx both showed a MAX SPIKE in WATTS at 231 Watts!! Ran the test multiple time and every test had a spike in the 220ish range.
Are all these XFX cards keeping these low Watts? I Saw a video with Jay 2 cents and he also had these low watt pulls.
yes the xfx cards seem to have a more efficient vrm and pcb overall. my cards only pull about 210w max each under full load on +150mv (1.3v). as long as your temps are fine the wattage is not really an issue i dont think.
I was testing crossfire last night with a 5960X and in Firestrike Exreme combine the system was pulling just over 800w peak power :O
as far only xfx cards can keep high OC and low power temps all other models fail.
STEFKA1984 its depends on the gpu itself as well as the pcb, plenty of other cards can run over 1400mhz
I don't say they cant but at many of them 1400 looks like rly hard to get stable and enjoy not one time for test and return it at normal. And the proof is all those complains from other rx480 users even reviewers have hard time to justify clocks over 1350 at some models even with watercool etc.
I have the same card and am unable to go past 1338Mhz on the core is there something im missing? Any help would be greatly appreciated youtube.
yes. you are clearly missing something.
fixed it had the low power bios switch on took it to the OC bios and i got up to 1400Mhz on the core right off the bat. Wondering now how to mod the bios like in this video any ideas?
Could I really have gotten so unlucky with my card? I see you suggested to someone else to try 1375 and work up from there. The HIGHEST clock I can set on mine and get a stable run on either Heaven or 3dmark is 1360 :( I have an i5 6600k OC'd to 4.6ghz, and I even tried locking the fans at 100% and the temp never got over 71C so I dont think the cpu or temps are stopping it...any thoughts?
use sapphire trixx, increase the power limit to 50% and give it some more voltage too. start with +25 and see how much more seed you get with that, then go up 25mv at a time. until you are happy with the speed.
Bingo. Thank you for the quick response. Im a first time overclocker and I think I was just nervous with the voltage. I was using trixx but only giving it like 8 or 9 mV lol. As soon as I gave it 25mV 1370 worked fine. and it seems to be scaling up pretty well. Just got 1410 to work stable. Thanks again.
Matthew Stanley ok i run 150mv on mine :P
May I ask what's a safe voltage for the RX 480? I also have the xfx black edition but I'm not sure letting it go past 2.2v for a long term overclock? I want to get it to 1450/2200 for core clock and memory clock respectively. I can get 1435/2130 on 2.1v
1.3v
Lawrence Timme so I'm okay running at 1.3 volts for a long term OC. I'm planning on keeping the card for a minimum of a good 2 years
yeah as long as its under 80c its all good :) 1.25-1.3v is fine as long as you keep it cooler. its just when people leave them in for 2 years and never dust then that it wont be able to run some extra volts :P
Lawrence Timme ah right thanks. It's because a lot of people on the reddit forums say 1.25volts is way to high for a long term overclock because the card will degrade fast. Which was why I was cautious to let it even hit 1.23volts. The temps sit around 82 degrees after running a firestrike stress test for about 20 minutes. What do you think?
also what's your opinion on the card degrading a lot faster long term at 1.25 - 1.3 volts
Is it worth getting the asus strix rx480? The one I'm looking at is £285, xfx gtr black edition is £261 so not a huge difference. But performance wise I'm not sure, I'm a complete noob to all this.
no the strix tend to oc worse and the cooler has an issue where it recycles its own air really badly and runs hotter. there is a partial explanation here ua-cam.com/video/orboOidNGqA/v-deo.html
also if you are just gaming and the gtr XXX is cheaper you could go for that too.
Thanks for the reply.
do you know the difference between the XFX RX480 GTR and the XFX RX480 GTR Black Edition?
Xero I am not sure. Maybe the color? I would like to know too.
there are 2 types.there is the GTR XXX and the GTR black edition. the XXX are slower and come at 1288 stock the black is 1338 i think.
Ah I see, thanks for the info, on amazon you can only tell them apart with the model number, the titles don't distinguish them
Xero yeah nobody labels them correctly, it was annoying when i was trying to buy mine as i wanted the black edition.
I managed to find a GTR Black edition in amazon, now I just need to wait for christmas :)
nice graphic card. good work.
Any chance that the gtr XXX version would overclock as good as the Black edition? Cause thats whay I can get my hands on the gtr xxx non black
there is a small chance, but i think you are more likely to get 1420-1450 with the XXX
Any link to a proven stable OCed BIOS for the GTR Black please?
no i just made my own
Yea I just opened Polaris editor and staring at it..mmm what numbers to change :D
Amer Huba you need to find out what is holding back your overclock, then increase that. if your memory is stuck at 2250 and can go faster increase that first, if its hitting power limit increase that.
nice colection of pc staff how much money do you spend for it ?
Mariusz Keminski many many monies. But I only buy things if they are a good deal. Mostly used and below average price.
+Lawrence Timme :) maby some day u come to LN2 (If u not are now) :p
Mariusz Keminski i have a cpu pot and dewar :P just not got a gpu pot yet. will be getting one in 2017 for sure :D
+Lawrence Timme good luck for many good ln2 procesors :)
Mariusz Keminski yes i have about 400 cpus :D
Sweet, have you ever seen this card the adapts MXM TO PCI-E?
www.zentrica.com/product/mxm-3-0-to-pci-express-carrier-board-type-1-1/
This seems like an awesome idea for us enthusiasts. It seems a little high in price, but it would be cool to run gtxm cards on desktops. I haven't seen anyone document something like this. Cheers buddy, keep the vids rollin out homie!
Wonder if i could get similar results with msi rx 480 gaming x 8 gb.
you should try! i would be interested to know how far an msi card would be able to go, it has a very good cooler on it.
no you cant xfx cards are better build lower power better cooling you may damage you card if you apply same settings.
STEFKA1984 no the msi card is fine.
I will not agree or disagree cause you know what you talking about, but the point is he cant use setting from xfx cause he's card may need more power limit fan speed etc to get 1400+ when Gtr do that like rly easy i mean 1400mhz with +25% power control and fan speed even on auto and still keep low temp and power even at wattman settings. He have to find similar settings for hes brand and tests that's my point. fo example I find your video very useful for my card but I know I will not hit as high but maybe like 1450 cause I don't use the black and I think 1450 will be the max I will get but atm I run it at 1400 and I'm happy no point for me to go higher atm.
STEFKA1984 i have another black edition and that only does 1450ish on 1.3v with =50% power limit on 200W
Hey man, I'm looking to buy the GTR Black edition... How are the temps?
they are great, it has one of the best coolers on any rx480
Fucking fuck if i knew XFX had some black magic chanted over their RX 480s i would've taken an GTR. my powercolor barely overclocks to 1350 and fan is already at 70% - 72c :(
Fuck.
sermerlin1 I'm at +75 mV on my Nitro+OC and I can not stabilize 1410MHz, I think I reached my limit. My ASIC score is only 65, I wonder what the OP ASIC is.
yes the are very very good for some reason.
my asic of the card in the video is 67% and the other card i got which can only do around 1450mhz has an asic of 76%, so i dont think it matters as much for these new gen amd cards.
they have a great cooler on the gtrs that much is certain. Check out their description of the heat pipes lol
I have the same RX 480 as you do btw.
Well XFX has some magic cooler... and magic PCB. I just know it OCs like beast while staying cool.
MSI RX 480 GAMING X 8gb or GTR Black Edition 8gb ?
the GTR is better
Did you test both or just you're thoughts?
no i bought the gtr because its is better. the cooler is slightly better the cards tend to oc better too.
*XFX GTR RX 480 or Saphire Nitro+ Rx 480 ???*
the gtr is a far superior card. its cooler, quieter and overclocks better.
how about when not overclocking? planning to get rx 480 this month and thats the question that has been bothering me up until now
I see.. thanks for info man
Vhlaaat its still a better card. like i said is way cooler and quieter and you might as well get an rx470if you arent going to oc an rx480 as an rx470 with an oc is just as fast........
I guess ill put rx 470 into consideration then coz I dont really plan to OC at all.. btw, should I get the 8gb one? Or the 4gb instead?
the fact that you forced tessellation off, and forced msaa 2x completely ruined all the benchmarks for me. it was like cheesing the ranks.
cool. i run benchmarks to win. turning tess off and using lod is not cheating as per the rules on hwbot.
how did u get a score of 16k , my 6600k and stock xfx gtr be rx480 scored 13k
and graphic score of 4k, am quite worried lol
you have to overclock it.
what speed are you running at?
Lawrence Timme i just did another 3d mark test and 4191 with an error saying " validaiton warning, graphic driver not approved" also am running at stock speed so 1338 mhz
yeah it always say that on the latest driver. If you watch the video you will see i am running a very high overclock.
what is the little card in front of the xfx rx 480?
gt610
Why have a second GPU? Any benefits?
no it wouldnt boot up otherwise
I didn't understand. You put the gt because your PC wasn't booting up with only the RX?
yeah, it was some strange glitch with that system and those drivers.
YOU SHOULD SHOW IN THE VIDEO VRM TEMPERATURES AND CORE TEMPERATURES
i dont have a thermal camera, but the temps dont really matter when benching on a voltage limited bios. The card gets to about 60c max with 100% fan speed on 1.3v.
my gtr max is 1360 and 2050. 1365 is insta frezz.
you may need some extra voltage to get to 1400+
I have. My old Msi Lightning runs circles around this so far. I can almost hit 60fps on BF1 with the xfx gtr stock. lags bad. the lightning ran it fine all day long. I have two of them so they are now crossfired and kicking ass.
God damn you have your i5 2500k clocked at 5.2ghz LOL amazing
yeah it can do 5.4ghz air fairly easy. i have 2 that are better as well.
i'm poor.. will you give me free stuff?
no get a job :P
Nice video, thanks! ... On a weird note, the Lancashire accent always sounds soooooo slow.... Drink some coffee :)
i am not from Lancashire!
Sorry if I misinterpreted, but you sounded identical to Brian Cox to me... I'm just a simple American trying to place the plethora of British accents but it sounded close to me... Sorry but again, thx for the video :)
Leeskie Ferrell yes lots of people have said this :P
