I didn't realize just how sharp Drouin was that day until watching this again. He was so far over every height until 2.38. Barshim was nursing an injury which was why he was only taking a very short approach. In events where he was jumping 2.42 or 2.43 he used an 8-stride approach, twice as long as he was using here. He still cleared 2.36 with this short run-up but that's not where he would have jumped from his full approach. Perhaps Drouin still could have jumped 2.40 on this day but he didn't have to.

The scene is the final of men's high jump at the Tokyo Olympics. Italy's Gianmarco Tamberi was facing Qatar's Mutaz Essa Barshim in the final. Both of them jumped 2.37 meters and were on par ! Olympic officials gave three more attempts to each of them, but they were unable to reach more than 2.37 meters.
One more attempt was given to two both of them, but Tampberi withdrew from the last attempt due to a serious leg injury. The moment when there was no other opponent in front of Barshim, the moment when he could have easily approached the gold alone !
But Barshim asked the official "if the gold can be shared between the two of us if I withdraw from the final attempt ?" The official checks and confirms and says "yes then the gold will be shared between the two of you". Barshim then had nothing to think about, announces withdrawal from the last attempt.
Seeing this, the Italian opponent Tamberi ran and hugged Barshim and screamed ! What we saw there was a great share of love in sports that touches our hearts. It reveals the indescribable sportsmanship that makes religions, colors and borders irrelevant !!!

tamberi was injured just before rio 2016. not during tokyo 2020 final. Barshim decided to comply with Tamberi's demand for a dual gold medal because he had suffered from the same injury of tamberi years before, so he chosed solidarity over competition.

Probably a bit of both but they try to not gain muscle mass on their upper bodies, the sprinters can probably bench press 4-5 times more than then, for example.

jumping events are all about power, so the idea is to move as fast as possible and to be as strong as possible, All while keeping body weight down.
So the ideal high jumper build is like between 6'0-6'4 and about 145-165lbs
in other words: tall skinny mo-fo's

    • @foiledits
