I have been watching many reviews of this phone and not many talked about the recording audio quality, which as you said is the best in the sector. By far.
@CYB3R2K30 I'm a professional musician and Sony smartphones have so damn good quality of mics that you can't barely notice the difference with a good ambiance mic (for ex. Zoom h4n pro). It's really useful in everyday life (not if you want to record in a studio of course)
All fine and dandy, but no word about the display being not as bright as key competitors? "Operating the slider manually, we measured a max of 336nits. A noticeable boost to 532nits is possible in bright ambient conditions when the adaptive brightness is enabled. Neither number is particularly impressive - current high-end phones can typically go beyond 800nits in auto mode, and most can be pushed higher than the Xperia even in manual mode." (from GSM Arena's review)
This is currently the one and only thing keeping me from buying the xperia 1 ii Almost perfect phone - flat screen, no notch, stereo speakers, top notch audio, competitive camera, excellent battery management, elegant design, etc

Already out for a month in HK. Sony definitely puts more strength in Asia market and I think in general people here appreciate Sony's style more. And buy more.
I've had this phone for about 4 months now and I will say this.. one thing a lot of people don't talk about. because of the 21:9.. when posting to apps like instagram.. your story posts are cropped by the app and don't appear how you shot it. this is because this the only phone with this aspect ratio for shots... if you don't care about that. and are happy with the camera.. this phone is one of the ones.
for me, this xperia lineup phone is the real phone that could called as a "pro" phone cause the cinemapro or photo pro app is really useful for some professionals out there. for example, if there's a production house that want to shot a movie and they want to test out the shot that they want. instead of using the cine alta camera or other cinema camera, they could use the xperia phone with cinema pro built in so they could get the reference for the shot that they're looking for.
Got the Xperia 5ii at the weekend. It is a little thinner than I thought but the specs for the money and the amount of boxes it ticks is incredible. It is very slippery as a phone and would have liked to have seen a case included.
Not gonna lie, the Xperia 5 ii is the first ever Sony smartphones that I love the most. I really don't care about the absence of 3D ToF sensor or Qi wireless charging or even a 4K screen, every feature that I care about is here - IP rating, microSD card slot, and 3.5mm audio jack. Really, THE. ONLY. smartphone that stops me from buying the Xperia 5 ii is the LG V60 ThinQ 5G with DualScreen case, that's about it.

One of your best reviews ever I am a Sony Alpha user and I've had Samsung note phones for years this intrigues me a great deal just for fun because if I were going to spend all that time setting up the shot I be using the dedicated camera I suppose most people will feel that way but it is fascinating what they have done here but as you said, the lack of a night mode and a terrible selfie shooter makes this phone a horrible paradox well done
I am so close to buying the 1 ii, but as you say the selfie quality and night mode are poor on both this and 5 ii. I think generally people need better point and shoot capabilities.
If Sony doesn't want to do marketing, and from their track record post-Ericsson it's clear that they they refuse to do any forever, they could just call it Walkman Phone. That would be marketing enough. And with the headphone jack, hi-res/dynamic digital sound, use of vibration tech to enhance beats, and the fact that it comes with a pair of premium headphones (for now), 'Walkman Phone' makes sense.
I got mine today it came without headphones, I never use the ear phones as I have some nice noise cancelling headphones that come with a Walkman from about 10yrs ago. It's a great phone though 😉
I am crazy fun of Sony mobiles, using it for the past 12 years and sad at same time since in my country (Bosnia and Herzegovina) still not available to purchase.. Great phone, love it
If you're not much of a tech savvy then probably, you would not appreciate the phone regardless if you have a proper camera or not. There is something about tinkering all the settings possible that satisfies someone. I can only say, the pro camera app and the Cinema app is not for the lazy people. I'd bring this If I'm out in the park and casually shooting, If I may say.
And dumb people believe they do it because of the environment and its better for climate loo, what a joke. Hypocrites. But yeah at the end we still keep buying their stuff. So we are in it 2 sadly.
Have had one for about a week. The glass back is almost as slippery as a Nokia 9, I bought a matt skin to stop it sliding off tables and trying to smash itself. Came from a S20 5g which is a similar size and similar features. The Sony feels a bit faster however. Overall I like the phone
I am glad that people are waking up and looking at the Sony phones I have been purchasing Sony phones ever since they started making Sony phones before they were Sony Ericsson that's when I was not purchasing them I have the Xperia one Mark II and I got to tell you I am super impressed with this device
I'd say a pretty good phone for the features offered and its neat design in the competition. The 24mm is the only good sensor in the 5 II which I believe is the Sony's latest IMX series. I heard the 16mm and 70mm sensors they used are Samsung's ISOCELL. Yet to confirm it with Sony. Photo Pro and Cinema Pro mode is a big learning curve for the beginners. This phone also offers 4K slow motion at 120fps in their cinema pro app, which neither of Sony's point and shoot ZV-1 nor RX 100 VII offers. I am yet to find the video bit rate information of Sony Xperia 5 II. The Sony support and their community appears kind of deserted. Xperia 5 II shines in 4K videos but they somehow missed fine tuning the videos at 1080p at 30 or 60 fps. They look choppy and lacks HD quality. The video stabilization is not great and dynamic range is not the best for photos and videos. The 120Hz screen is perfect for gaming and the stamina mode offers good battery management.
I bought it with the XM3 in ear headphones for 899€. 189€ is then subtracted from the price. The camera and software experience is a blast. Camera has learning curve for sure but coming from an iPhone 11 pro I love its creativity freedom.
Nice review :-) I own it since mid October and unpacked it yesterday to upgrade from my S9+ (Exynos). Great phone, same height with my previous one, slimmer and lighter, snappier and an all around upgrade for me. Getting used to CInema pro and Photo pro apps cause I already use DSLR but Nikon's and not Sony's. As my previous phone, I chose this cause of the headphones jack, water resistance and OLED panel. Purchased at €640 at a special deal that give also for free a Sony WF-1000XM3 true wireless earbuds! Can't be happier, as this is my first Sony smartphone, last Sony's own phones I had was back in the late 90s (before Sony Ericsson) Cheers and I hope that case manufacturers to start creating some cases for this one cause now there are only 3-4 from AliExpress, eBay etc.
Great review man! But whether you have these super manual settings it still doesn't take better photos or video than the flagship competition. iPhones and galaxy devices still have better camera results. The regular consumer doesn't want a complicated phone but one that points and shoots and has what you need.
The camera is perfect. There is AUTO mode that uses autoHDR in Pro app, there is MR mode that is your "Night mode" but a customizible-to-your-liking one. And there is autoHDR video in main camera app, if CinemaPro is too complicated for you to use. And all other aspects of the phone are just superb. Front cam is just good, so yeah, not for the selfie crowd.

They still priced it too high. Sony if you want more customers. First launch your products to as many regions as possible. Next, lower the price. I mean if it's like 749 or even lower you still make profit right? Because the competition today is too aggressive and Sony needs to rebuild rapport to customers out there.
Xperia 5II is less expensive than the iPhone 12mini or OnePlus 8pro in Europe. iPhone 12 mini costs 999$ in Europe (recalculated from € to $) for 64GB, 1180 for 256GB 12pro Max 512GB costs 1910$ here. Meanwhile the 5II costs recalculated 970$. So it's a phone almost half the price of the 12pro Max, while still having the almost the same camera setup as the 12pro Max (12+12+12 and The Main both have 1/1.7inch, Telephoto difference of 2.5Times and 3 Times is like also about the same thing) The 12pro doesn't have an 1/1.7 inch Main camera, only 1/2.55.

Xperia has the probably the most timeless designs of all time. The weight balance and slab design is truly amazing ..trim the front bezels and it's the best smartphone design for me . I rocked a sony xperia Z2. One of the best sony smartphone !! Sadly sony mobiles has left india !!
I've been these great Sony phones for years, they are truly great. I also never support democrats or republicans, always third party for me. Sony reminds me of voting third party over the two party system apple/samsung. Sony is fresh, different, reliable, genuine, legit and uncorrupted by fancy marketing.
No mention at all that it has a tracking auto focus capability and eye focus. Dismissed so many of the camera features.... 4k 120fps.. shooting RAW. up to 20 frames a second burst mode...
I would really like to try that phone, but the price tag is a bit high. Sure, they can do some things no other phone can do, but there are a lot of phone options in that price range, if they could lower the price they could really improve their sales and be competitive, but before that, I don't think they're going to sell a lot of Xperia 5 II
Do Sony phones still heat up and limit you from shooting when the phone's too hot? I used to have an Xperia Z3, absolutely loved it while taking pics and videos.. but it'd tell me to stop because it's too hot lol. Never went back to a Sony phone after that.
I found it very hard to decide between the Xperia 5 II and the Pixel 4a. Both have great cameras, but because I usually shoot snapshots from the hip, I need a phone that can instantly tale a decent photo. When I take pictures in my everyday live, I don't have time to manually adjust settings. I usually have only 2 maybe sometimes 3 seconds from reaching into my pocket until the snapshot must have been taken or else the situation or scene is already over. And for that use case the Pixel 4a is the more reliable tool, even though it lacks in hardware. The Xperia 5 II is an amazing tool, but only for the patient while it is not practical for most in a world where the Pixel phones exist. And I really don't like the long form factor. Please Sony make true compact phones again. I had the X compact and absolutely loved it.

It seemed like for a while that other phone brands go so used to and gd at using Sony sensor they became better and making the software work for them than Sony did.
photo pro is cool and all but, for the average consumer why go through a headache of getting the right shot. I just wish sony could upgrade their basic camera app to be on par with apple in terms of image processing.
Hahaha 🤣 Exactly. Sony always name their devices a random string of gibberish, with the exception of PlayStation and their Xperia smartphone line. The latter, however, still tends to get confusing to many regular folks: "Xperia 1-2?" Honestly, the PlayStation line Sony decided to keep simple because they were up against Microsoft, who truly cannot consistently name anything.
@@matthewsjardine I feel the console market is a lot more better, you only have an update to a device when there is really a need for one, it took 7 years for a successor of ps4 to come, while ps5 takes it to the next level, ps4 is good enough too!, but with smartphones, I don't know what happens to companies, they want to launch literally 3 successors of the same model in one year!, one plus releasing a newer phone in 5 months!, and realme launching a successor every 2 months!!, these companies back off on putting useful features in the current model just to enable them in the next model which will be out in 3-4 months!
sony mobile department is already under sony electronics and is working closely with the alpha team, thus the naming... at least they dont name it pro max ultra plus super duper intergalactic quantum...
If this phone was costing around $600 then definitely I would have bought it. Sony to compete with Samsung and Apple needs to come up with a device that has better front camera , potrait night mode with raw image capability
Really hope the 1iii and 5iii improve on these amazing phones. The awful selfie cam needs drastic improvements, and they gotta work to combine some of their camera features into one mode, instead of having to jump through 3 different apps to do different things. (Plus they really should add much better computational software processing to the default auto mode, plus a dedicated night mode. Leave the unprocessed stuff for the pro users in the pro app.) The US also has to have 5G, especially for the price. But the 1ii was the best designed phone I’ve seen in a while...I hope they keep nearly the same design. The front firing speakers and headphone jack are two of the best decisions ever.
There's a few dozen xperia 1 ii and xperia 5 ii on the second hand marketplace locally here, due to the owners buying it, expecting another iphone, iphone clone or samsung phone with camera apps that have social media filters baked in and forced down their throats, literally every single of those postings are by individuals that have switched back to a iphone, iphone clone or a samsung phone.
Sony needs to change their naming scheme, incorporate their smartphones in some kind of eco system with their entertainment devices, and actually market their mobile devices. Bundling the phones with headphones would help too. I don't understand why they don't push to have more market share.

I have been watching many reviews of this phone and not many talked about the recording audio quality, which as you said is the best in the sector. By far.
@@vicentepinedo556 they almost never talk about audio recording quality. Thats such a shame... I find it extremely important.
@CYB3R2K30 speak for yourself mate. Wait until you go to college and record your classes...
@CYB3R2K30 musicians and music lovers care about this
@CYB3R2K30 I'm a professional musician and Sony smartphones have so damn good quality of mics that you can't barely notice the difference with a good ambiance mic (for ex. Zoom h4n pro). It's really useful in everyday life (not if you want to record in a studio of course)
I had a Sony XZ3, amazing phone, never forgotten it till this day
Sees him having a persona 5 wallpaper, then he says he played royal. Idk why it made me so happy but it did. Great game and excellent review as always
This is currently the one and only thing keeping me from buying the xperia 1 ii
Almost perfect phone - flat screen, no notch, stereo speakers, top notch audio, competitive camera, excellent battery management, elegant design, etc
Waiting for the Xperia 1 III in 2021.
Galaxy Note 20 Ultra can achieve a peak brightness of around 1600 nits outdoors in bright sunlight with auto brightness turned on.
Finally someone talking about the new Xperia phones! Watching on my Xperia 5 II
Yeahhh me too
Yep, watching on my Xperia 1 (excellent phone) and will upgrade to the 1 ii (camera pro, wireless charging and out of this world 4k screen on black Friday). I am using my phone with VR to fly drone in FPV... 4k screen = to tiny pixels!!!)
Xperia phones are superb and underrated...
Everyone else in my family now as one... Simple design language, handy buttons and no bloatware!

Josh, AA days where you review sony xperia phones flashes back. Those were the days of Sony. But as always, great to hear your review and excellent job! Thumbs up to this! 👍🏻
I have this phone, upgraded from OnePlus 5, I like it a lot :-)
Do you have the problem that makes the phone freeze it just locks on what is on and stays like that for 30 second or so and the phone calls are bad

Waiting sony to launch xperia 1ii in India. If anyone from Sony seeing this then, hey sony bring your smartphones in India. It is best time for you bring your smartphones.
It's not happening, it will have the same result as pixel, nobody will buy it
But the phone is awesome 👍👍
They've officially announced last year that they're taking exit from india (in smartphone market) so no hopes.
keep dreaming... like here in the philippines, haha.
Have one on order... can’t wait...
Amazing phone, 0 availability, December US release. Sony is REALLY trying hard to fail.
It's the same release date as the UK. But it's available now at wonda mobile, and it's cheaper.
Already out for a month in HK. Sony definitely puts more strength in Asia market and I think in general people here appreciate Sony's style more. And buy more.
I got the HK model from eBay, it was $50 cheaper and had 256 gigs of storage instead of 128 that's coming on the US model.
for their availability yes the rest no
I've just received mine today. The blue version cost me £615 in the UK.
How is battery
@@mrboleus8240 so far it seems ok. I use the smart charge so charge up to 90% and it tends to last all day with average usage.

Same. It's so fast and functional.
One of your best reviews ever
I am a Sony Alpha user
and I've had Samsung note phones for years
this intrigues me a great deal
just for fun because if I were going to spend all that time setting up the shot I be using the dedicated camera
I suppose most people will feel that way
but it is fascinating what they have done here
but as you said, the lack of a night mode and a terrible selfie shooter makes this phone a horrible paradox
well done
I am so close to buying the 1 ii, but as you say the selfie quality and night mode are poor on both this and 5 ii. I think generally people need better point and shoot capabilities.
As a pro photog I dont want to carry a 5D3 for fun and I dont want to spend £1000 on my phone and £1000 on a walk around camera, this is ideal.
Ahh the xperia z5c. One of my favourite phones to own. Small and easy to hold.
Finally the xperia phones getting some well deserved spotlight
Great phone, love it
If you’re going to go through all the effort to setup a shot... wouldn’t you typically be using a proper camera?
Maybe its beneficial for if you're travelling...?
Maybe some people can't afford an Alpha camera with lenses so they bought this.
Rx100 is the perfect balance for size and quality :)
Maybe people want to control their image lol.
If you're not much of a tech savvy then probably, you would not appreciate the phone regardless if you have a proper camera or not. There is something about tinkering all the settings possible that satisfies someone. I can only say, the pro camera app and the Cinema app is not for the lazy people. I'd bring this If I'm out in the park and casually shooting, If I may say.
not enough space to include the headphone jack is just the excuse of the companies, the real reason is to sell more of their wireless earbuds.
@Leopold yeah, but yet they still keep the headphone jack. Nice move.
And dumb people believe they do it because of the environment and its better for climate loo, what a joke. Hypocrites. But yeah at the end we still keep buying their stuff. So we are in it 2 sadly.
@@fahdzaa I couldn't agree more. Your comment explains the entire thing. We as consumers couldn't do much too even if we are mad at it.
Nice seeing you here, Josh.
Have had one for about a week. The glass back is almost as slippery as a Nokia 9, I bought a matt skin to stop it sliding off tables and trying to smash itself. Came from a S20 5g which is a similar size and similar features. The Sony feels a bit faster however. Overall I like the phone
I had the S20 Plus 5G and I bought the iPhone 11 Pro Max. I’m interested in this phone is it a good phone?
Nice. Well i wanted to get the S20 5G, have a S9 now but this Xperia got my attention in many ways. Which one would u prefer?
I am glad that people are waking up and looking at the Sony phones I have been purchasing Sony phones ever since they started making Sony phones before they were Sony Ericsson that's when I was not purchasing them I have the Xperia one Mark II and I got to tell you I am super impressed with this device
What a fantastic review. Currently seeking on Amazon in the UK for £599 ...
Smartphone of the year. I'm waiting for it to come in the mail.
It's the 1 II. I'm not a fan of the assistant button.
You can install Google camera if you want night mode
Nice review :-) I own it since mid October and unpacked it yesterday to upgrade from my S9+ (Exynos).
Great phone, same height with my previous one, slimmer and lighter, snappier and an all around upgrade for me.
Getting used to CInema pro and Photo pro apps cause I already use DSLR but Nikon's and not Sony's.
As my previous phone, I chose this cause of the headphones jack, water resistance and OLED panel.
Purchased at €640 at a special deal that give also for free a Sony WF-1000XM3 true wireless earbuds!
Can't be happier, as this is my first Sony smartphone, last Sony's own phones I had was back in the late 90s (before Sony Ericsson)
Cheers and I hope that case manufacturers to start creating some cases for this one cause now there are only 3-4 from AliExpress, eBay etc.
Looks like a perfect upgrade from s9+
I want to bring back my iPhone 11 Pro Max and buy this one, is it really worth it?
The Google assistant key makes it feel like the pixel, for me it's what I want in my phone
4:10 You'll never see it coming...
Nice review 👍🏻
Imagine sony and google work to create pixel together it's gonna be a BOP I believe 😍
I don't know what you imagine, but Sony relies on raw/ little processed images, and Pixel is software only. This doesn't make sense to combine them.

They still priced it too high. Sony if you want more customers. First launch your products to as many regions as possible. Next, lower the price. I mean if it's like 749 or even lower you still make profit right? Because the competition today is too aggressive and Sony needs to rebuild rapport to customers out there.
Xperia 5II is less expensive than the iPhone 12mini or OnePlus 8pro in Europe.
iPhone 12 mini costs 999$ in Europe (recalculated from € to $) for 64GB, 1180 for 256GB
12pro Max 512GB costs 1910$ here.
Meanwhile the 5II costs recalculated 970$.
So it's a phone almost half the price of the 12pro Max, while still having the almost the same camera setup as the 12pro Max
(12+12+12 and The Main both have 1/1.7inch, Telephoto difference of 2.5Times and 3 Times is like also about the same thing)
The 12pro doesn't have an 1/1.7 inch Main camera, only 1/2.55.
@Michael Marvisya Yes, they aren't quite hitting most of the costumers, only some professionals maybe.
My Note 8 is still king IMO

That's a great phone!!. If I didn't break it into a million pieces that the display stopped to worked I would have used it Abit longer. That being said, I'm happy I upgraded :)

I've just bought the 5ii and your review sum up exactly what I feel about this phone.
I like this phone myself, but when my wife needs a new phone, I would probably recommend the Samsung Galaxy S10+ 5G to her instead of this one.
Xperia has the probably the most timeless designs of all time. The weight balance and slab design is truly amazing ..trim the front bezels and it's the best smartphone design for me . I rocked a sony xperia Z2. One of the best sony smartphone !! Sadly sony mobiles has left india !!
No night mode is the biggest bummer in my opinion. Otherwise with the headphone jack this would be on my short list
Agreed. No night mode, wireless charging, and somewhat slower charging speeds are the main downfalls from what I see.
It has Snapdragon 865 right. So we should be able to install gcam mod on it with nightsight right?

The reason it doesn’t charge that fast is because they don’t want the battery to degrade too soon.

I remember that it was Josh who made me buy my Xperia Z2 back in the day 😁
Do Sony phones still heat up and limit you from shooting when the phone's too hot? I used to have an Xperia Z3, absolutely loved it while taking pics and videos.. but it'd tell me to stop because it's too hot lol. Never went back to a Sony phone after that.

How are the Haptics compared to the Pixel 4XL and iPhone 12?
I had the X compact and absolutely loved it.
is it available in canada?
I can't find photo pro on the Google play store...link please.
You will not find it. It's dedicated Sony

Leave the unprocessed stuff for the pro users in the pro app.)
The US also has to have 5G, especially for the price. But the 1ii was the best designed phone I’ve seen in a while...I hope they keep nearly the same design. The front firing speakers and headphone jack are two of the best decisions ever.
Someone has to do the review... And that's the reason it's done.
My only issue with Sony's cameras considering how much they charge for them is their selfie cameras only 8 megapixels which is very crummy
