It IS a gift. To get to hear the fleshing out of a song, and hear it's origins before it hits the studio. To state the obvious, before the Internet, you had to be DAMN lucky to get your hot little hands on something like this. One of the many reasons I still use UA-cam are gems like this, especially from "commercial" bands like DM...it helps a music lover appreciate their favorite singers/groups that much more when you listen (not hear) to the work that went into making the classics we love still to this day.

Definitely, it's Alan. His voice and style of writing music somehow differentiate from Martin's. I read the wiki from the link below. I think Alan would have even forgotten them or just has denied his authorship for an obvious reason. He just cuts himself off DM. If you stop thinking of something, you make your mind up it did not happen and believe in it.

Where are we going to get another Alan Wilder? I still think that his best works were in that '101' by Depeche Mode from 1988, before the very special Violator from 1990, which left us very, very remembered gems.
I got hooked on Techno (the real one) with Kraftwerk, Yazoo, Mecano's first albums in Spain, but Depeche Mode discovered another way of understanding Techno, with dark but very special nuances.

I guess he was expecting to bring more songs in the band ( and some of them are seriously top quality - remember " In your memory" being absolutely brillant as "people are people" B side). I guess he gave up after this. and he ended up being just the arranger with little songwriting credit. These demos are already quite arranged. Just listen to some interviews with Al of that period, listen to his backing vocals, & you'll find - its pure & utter A. C. Wilder in the flash!

Alan is great musician and genius in a studio, but I'm glad that songwriting for a pop band is not in his talents.
Martin songs are somewhere both in between Vince and Alan vision)

in 1984? cassette was pretty much all you had back then in terms of home recording

@@Quants02 most musicians, especially those as highly successful as Depeche Mode could easily present their demos on reel to reel which in 1984 would've easily been what they did. How else would they have recorded all the multi tracks?? On a Triad??

      @Quants02  Рік тому +9

Alan had a cassette multitrack recorder called a portastudio, he used it to record demos and also to record his first album 1+2, DM (and most other bands at the time) only used reel to reel tape in the studio because that's how you got the best sound quality for albums, you didn't _need_ good sound quality for demo tapes hence why the members were recording their demos on cassettes into the early 90s

for home demos Alan and Martin were using simple 4-track cassette recorders. it was just for capturing ideas, no intension to make big productions

@@mattbelinski7760 Many musicians were using home studios with cassette during this era. I watched a documentary where The Edge was showing his home recordings (on cassette) for the Joshua Tree album, all recorded and overdubbed at his house. The medium was much more flexible for home portastudios as you could play the tapes on a larger variety players (home hifi, car stereo etc) rather than needing a reel to reel.

This sounds more like Howard Jones than Alan Wilder. I love Alan Wilder, but he really is not a songwriter.

not every song on a demo tape has to be _on_ the finished album, Alan wrote all these songs for sgr but only one of them made it to the finished album (namely if you want, which is kind of a shame because i think i feel no guilt should've made it instead)
