- Опубліковано 30 вер 2024
- A couple of weeks ago, on April 20, 2021, singer Les McKeown of the Bay City Rollers died. McKeown was born on 12 November 1955, Edinburgh, Scotland). To commemorate him, we highlight this video of one of the Rollers biggest hits.
The Bay City Rollers are a Scottish pop rock band known for their worldwide teen idol popularity in the 1970s. They have been called the "tartan teen sensations from Edinburgh" and "the first of many acts heralded as the 'biggest group since the Beatles'".
The group's line-up had many changes over the years, but the classic line-up during its heyday included guitarists Eric Faulkner and Stuart Wood, singer Les McKeown, bassist Alan Longmuir, and drummer Derek Longmuir. The current lineup (since 2018) includes original guitarist Stuart "Woody" Wood, singer Ian Thomson, bassist Marcus Cordock, and drummer Jamie McGrory.
The Bay City Rollers have sold 120 million records worldwide.
"Bye, Bye, Baby (Baby Goodbye)" is a popular song written by Bob Crewe and Bob Gaudio, a member of The Four Seasons, whose version of the song made it to No. 1 in Canada and No. 12 on the US Billboard Hot 100 in 1965.
The Bay City Rollers version made it to no 1 in the UK, sold a million copies and hit No. 1 on the UK Singles Chart for six weeks from March 1975. It ended the year as the UK's top-selling single.
In Australia and Ireland it also reached to no. 1.
In the Netherlands it reached to #11 in the Dutch Top 40.
In the film 'Love Actually' the song is played by Daniel (Liam Neeson) at his wife's funeral, and by the DJ (Junior Simpson) at Juliet (Keira Knightley) and Peter's (Chiwetel Ejiofor) wedding reception.

These songs will live forever. Being young back then - the memories will last forever, what we were doing, people we knew, girlfriends and boyfriends - maybe our first, school discos, tartan flares and platforms, and songs that instantly got you dancing or tweaked your emotions. RIP Les, Alan and Ian.
Agree had the full outfit I did a true Bay City Roller fan back then I wish I could find my photos of way back then dont know what happened to them all 😢
It is a known fact that there are, to mankind , the occurrence of phenomena. In 1975 and around that year it was known globally the the Rollers were not a pop sensation - they were an absolute phenomenon.
Rest in peace Les McKeown

I was born in the 80s and knew of them. But my mum was too old to be a fan of them so they were never on in our house.
They were mentioned in an episode of Friends. Might sound daft but that's when I realised they must have been known outside the UK.

DRUMER * ERICS BROTHER)
@@purselady2 Not Eric's brother. The drummer was Derek Longmuir, Alan's brother. They were the founding members. Incidentally Derek became a nurse after the Bay City Rollers broke up and was convicted of possession of child pornography a few years ago. Was a big Rollers fan growing up so this sad reality kind of taints the memory.

You ain't alone I'm 27 and I love old songs,more then modern day songs!😅😆
My daughter once asked me "why do you still listen to 70's music ?" i replied "i love the music now just as much as i did in the 70's, should i stop listening to music that i love ? she just smiled and said "no" i went on to explain that i don't see music as like a fashion thing where you get rid of the old for something new, if a song puts a smile on your face when you hear it, then thats all that matters.
I wouldn't say you were born in the wrong century, in fact i'd say you are lucky because if there is a particular song you want to hear, you just type in it and click, back then we had to wait a full week for the chart show or if you got lucky you might hear it on the radio during the week, i was only a young lad so couldn't afford to buy all the songs i wanted to hear.
