ram and GPU overclocking will probably make the most impact and are much easier to do. CPU overclocking will often offer negligible performance
For most games yes, but in my experience OCing for CSGO is overpowered since its a CPU heavy single thread game.
It depends entirely on your bottleneck. For example, I'm playing Cyberpunk 2077 and my GPU (RTX 3070) is sitting at a comfortable 65% load at peak. My CPU on the otherhand was high 90s-100% pretty much constantly. I gained like 15 frames from lightly overclocking, which was enough to push me to my monitors refresh rate. It's all just knowing what your bottleneck is. If you GPU is at max load constantly, then yea, overclocking your CPU will have no effect.
As I’ve gotten into pc gaming on my Asus ROG laptop... I’m seriously looking into building my on rig. All of your videos are so thorough and helpful for someone who is computer illiterate! Thanks man!

It's a monster but can always be faster. In my case I want to go through and manually set it up because my board is already putting through quite a bit of voltage to the CPU and it may be wise to lower that a bit or just raise clock speeds

@@pootisspencer5492 it will run hotter thus making a shorter lifespan and in most applications its a very negligible amount of performance. Its also quite easy to fry a cpu once you start messing with voltage.

Simple and without too much complicating. Good choice of benchmarks, I would only add super PI.
Though a few seconds off render times aren't impressive, you only tested with a 1 min video. Those few seconds would add up if you rendered a 45min, 4k video down to 1080p. It might also help during editing when Davinci Resolve demands more resources from the CPU rather than the GPU.

My pre-built PC came with a professionally overclocked CPU and they put a massive air cooler on it. I took the OC off so now that cooler is total over kill. Even under sustained heavy load the cpu cores don't go over 50 degrees c. Thats a leeway of 60 degrees c before any sort of thermal throttling.

Pro-tip: put your cpu rad to the front of your case and the fans from the front intake to the roof of the case for better temps. I used to have my 240mm aio mounted on the roof and i5-9600k oc at 4.7Ghz with 1.28V temps hovering around 68c° peaking bout 76c° in longer gaming sessions and my overclocked gtx 1070ti was at 68c°. I swapped the rad from the top to the front and overclocked even more to 4.9Ghz with 1.370 volts on (LLC mode 3 on msi z370a pro mobo so full load vcore is 1.384 according to hw monitor) and my temps while gaming hovers around 59c° and spikes at 65c°. So I put the fans from the front of my case on the roof so the heat generated by the gpu and the slightly warmer than before air from the front of the case gets out more efficiently. First time I tried putting the rad to the front I had push/pull config on it and only one fan at the back of the case and my GPU temps went up as much as my cpu temps went down so I rolled the rad back on top. But now there's one fan in the back of the case and two on the roof (other is 120mm other is 140mm for the lolz, I also slapped an extra fan on the rad so it has now two fans on the outside pushing air in and one fan inside the case pulling air in at the same level as the gpu, also for the lolz) and GPU temps went up from 68c° to 70c° but it doesn't affect my oc boost clocks so it is all good. Getting better scores in benchmarks, way lower cpu temps in stress tests (hovering around 78c° compared to about 85c° in blender classroom render ran twice in a row) and more frames in games with less frametime spikes! Yay!
not reading all that
So what vcore did u find stable for 5.1ghz?
His was at 1.35 volts, but remember your miles may vary, because each cpu is a little diff than the next.

Good basic tutorial. You had one minor slip up, you say the bottleneck for games is FPS. That is not true, FPS is a metric to measure performance. Overall good job
Yeah... So the fps is the result of the bottleneck. Didn't everyone infer that?
I am an overclocker, with a ROG board you would be best to leave the voltage on auto at first and then monitor the core voltage using CPUZ. If it spikes briefly that is just the load line calibration, it's the voltage under load that is important. The voltage you set manually won't necessarily be the voltage used which is why it is important to monitor it. Some of the latest top end boards are that good that there is literally nothing to be gained from touching the voltages, offsets or LLC under normal cooling conditions. If you are smart with the cooling, you can easily have a PC that runs quiet and cool as well as being overclocked. However the newer the hardware the harder it seems as CPU's are sent out with the max performance possible with stock coolers and do overclock themselves to a point (max turbo). Lower spec CPU's which run cooler are more likely to have overclocking headroom. Also there is performance to be gained from tuning the cache speeds even if you keep the cores stock. It's almost pointless adding super fast memory if you keep the cache speed stock, in fact memory that is too fast for the cache can slow the system down.
Avoid high load line calibration without voltage offsets that keep the voltage locked as this will burn out the power phases and VRM's on your motherboard (I'm talking from experience). Keep states that lower voltages and clocks when the cpu is not under load enabled in the bios and windows, this can actually improve performance overall. Avoid stress tests as these only test certain instruction sets and scenarios for the cpu and again will destroy phases and VRM's if done too long.
If you clock too high you will either get plenty of blue screens, program crashes and anomalies in windows. Benchmarking is a very good way to test stability as is the Davinci Resolve rendering. If your system can get through 5 to 10 minutes of video rendering you are pretty much golden. If it does crash monitor the voltage as it renders with CPUZ if you are on auto, then manually set it and check again. Once you have it a fraction higher fully rerun the render. I've found increasing voltage by 0.01 has been enough to make the difference before on my daily overclocked rig.
I do want to do some OC videos one day on my channel but every platform is different to overclock on. As 10th gen Intel and AM4 are the newest CPU's I have experience with I'm reluctant. I'm regularly matching or beating 12th gen scores with my i9 10900K so am guessing the newer Intel's take more skill to overclock properly. Per core overclocking is what I need to learn to go to the next level.

using software to overclock these days made it so much nicer. just boot into your desktop, modify settings and if things dont work out, enter your bios and reset it.
I love your the way your so clear on things. you just say what needs to said no messin.
I usually don't overclock at all because I want my systems to last as long as possible. But since I'm considering to buy a whole new rig, I did think about it now. The gains don't seem so noticable tho, so I won't overclock my CPU at all, even tho it's the bottleneck of my pc.
My current rig:
i5-6600K @3.5GHz
MSI GTX 1080 ti
16 GB DDR4-2666 RAM
ASUS Maximus VIII Hero Z170
It's still more than enough for 90% of current-gen games, but I don't feel like putting more brand-new parts into an old pc. Upgraded the GPU from a GTX 970 to a 1080 ti end of last year, but then noticed how bad my CPU is bottlenecking it. So yeah... Gonna sell my old buddy and get a brand new one instead. RTX cards will take over anyway soon, and I should still get good money for this pc.
Would be awesome tho if you guys could give me some tipps on what might also limit the performance on my rig, since some VR title's don't run as good as I would want them to.

What tends to be a safe temperature that does err on the side of caution? I've been looking into overclocking recently for my first build. In my opinion, it doesn't seem worth it. The negatives are highly concerning such as instability, higher thermals, higher power consumption. And for what? A handful of more frames? Wouldn't it be easier to turn the settings down to achieve this? Overclocking is bound to lower the lifespan of the chip. There's no way it isn't wearing down the transistors. If it's that serious, I'd rather spend the money on the next class of hardware capable of higher speeds out the box.
You opened my eyes a little bit. I figured overclocking would do quite a bit more than just a few frames. I want to reliably handle 1440p and make the graphics as beautiful and sharp as possible with no lag. I was thinking overclocking would be a good solution, but perhaps just increasing the fan speed would do fine? What do you think?
