Marianne Faithful - the only woman who could knock off a song with such filthy lyrics and do so with nothing but 100% class....that is a lady to be reckoned with ;) And she wasn't the only one smoking - that trumpet player!! It's so gratifying to see how the audience was responding - they loved her! This was always my favorite MF song - the album is perfect, every song a gem....and I'm glad to see this video - it was down for a while, glad it got reposted.
Kristin Burton The written word is not one of my strong points - she did write the lyrics, but maybe I should have used the word perform instead of knock off.....
stevobath For some reason, I always thought she wrote the lyrics to most of her tunes...I knew she didn't write the Ballad Of Lucy Jordon - oh well, that was life before the internet ;)
Marianne is the only woman who could deliver these lyrics with class, elegance and style. every now and then when I need some perspective in life I binge on Marianne's back catalogue, it always inspires me to look down on the fools who knock me,
13 years ago...you made the best reply to Marianne Faithfuls live Why'd ya do what you did. .Hope yer still alive Sooz. (I'm 66,no spring chicken , myself.)
my favourite MF song ever.....i played it over and over and over when i first bought the album. I felt her rage, felt every word.... I had lived every word! Couldnt beleive someone had put my feelings and thoughts into words and music in such a raw and real way. I'm 71 now and i can still feel every raw emotion when i listen to the song. Fucking amazing! So good to see others loving to too.
One of my desert island discs. The guitar on this, though, is not a patch on the late Joe Mavety’s brilliantly discordant playing. Praise be to the trumpet…
one of the most eclectic singers in the past 35 years - from French ballads - to he soft spoken words/singing "as Tears go By" but NOTHING can TOP a CLASSIC "Broken English" Must say till the early 80's till now I can play all the brilliant LIVE tracks that you TUBE has,,,,Butch
She forgot to sing my favorite verse! "Why'd ya do what you did, when you know it makes me sore/Cuz she had cobwebs up her fanny, and I believe in giving to the poor."
i think Marianne is simply the best.. I've seen every concert she's performed here in Adelaide Australia & hoping to see her again someday but I'm aware that she's been unwell after having surgery last year.. wishing you well Marianne & i hope you recovery full so as you can travel & continue to perform. Most importantly ms marianne look after number 1 youself before you even consider making a come back.x
For real fans the famous 'Lost' concert from 1990 'Blazing Away' has been posted, with Ms. Faithfulls blessing! Great concert with a less visceral version of this included in the set.
I mean, she LAYS IT DOWN. Marianne Faithfull, bowing to this greatness is a given. I've known this song half my life now, and goddamn it is still SO raw and SO real and SO true. Thank you so much for being you!
Hi Mary Ann Faithfull I bought this broken English version uncensored yay 😀 November 1979 when I was 19 I have just witnessed. A live concert of you and the sleazy band and sleazy trumpeter sleazy easy mazza come and bring your band to the tanks at edge hill cairns north QLD come in winter which is our cooler climate that uncensored broken English got shut down by the cops in Brisbane Luckily I still purchased the uncensored please come to CAIRNS Australia in the winter of may June July please it’s been along time since you recorded may July releases November 1979 me and my crew were and still are drug fiends cheers Jules 😀💙🌈🌟😎👌
A great talent with great material. I love her best when she is raw, raunchy, potent and powerful. Such a dichotomy from her appearance and wardrobe. Which just makes it that much better; a great 'mind fuck!' (< 8) GREAT first coronet solo and a nice addition to an excellent mix and live version.
Saw her perform live after Broken English came out and then after Dangerous Acquaintances. Awesome, though she had to powder her nose at the side of the stage between numbers, to the crowd's delight and applause...
Mary Anne Faithful got to play a bit part in the movie, "American Psyco" and was part of the writing team. "What di ya do it? was part of a set created by the FBI in an attempt to bring out a man, and men and women, that would kill an actor or singer for a copyright and bank account. In the movie, Mary got to play the real esate lady. Left out of the movie was that she, they, the FBI, knew that the killer was going to follow the real estate lady to kill her. And, this is when they nabbed him
@TreasureOne Marianne is the first to admit these days she forgets lines....we still have her and can enjoy her talent so thats the important thing...salaam
Read her autobiography - brutal, honest, & the best out there about The Stones (including Keef's effort, which was nice but a little too lacking in detail re. Mick et al).
Jammie ...ooohhhh Marianne I love you ! You express these (*%^&$%&&$*-emotions, these lyrics, that voice of yours, so well. It helped me. Thank you, Marianne, x
Songs don't come more real than this. Love you forever Marianne Faithful.
she still has her voice. best song she ever did....powerful lyrics!
As tears go by still rips me one...20 some years before Broken English...
Perfection in every way ... and that trumpet!
I have felt that rage. Brilliant performance Marianne.
Bought this album upon release. One of the most influential records. Senior year of high school. Fuck yeah.
This was a True Paradise Garage Classic. Enough said.

***** Knock off, or knock out? Did she knock it off or did she write it and knock it out?
Kristin Burton
The written word is not one of my strong points - she did write the lyrics, but maybe I should have used the word perform instead of knock off.....
***** Actually it was Heathcote Williams who wrote the lyrics, she just sang them from a woman's point of view.
stevobath
For some reason, I always thought she wrote the lyrics to most of her tunes...I knew she didn't write the Ballad Of Lucy Jordon - oh well, that was life before the internet ;)
did you know that the writer of this song originally intended it to be performed by Tina Turner the gospel singer
Marianne...what a woman!!! Fabulous performance n one of the greatest "this is not a love song" songs ever!!!
Marianne is the only woman who could deliver these lyrics with class, elegance and style. every now and then when I need some perspective in life I binge on Marianne's back catalogue, it always inspires me to look down on the fools who knock me,

And the spit on my snatch verse as well 🤣
@@kylepruden1948 are we out of love now? is this just a bad patch?
Yes, just recalled the cobwebs up her fanny - loved that line xxx
Happy 67th Birthday to my #1 lady. What an amazing performance.
This never ages. Really angry. Really heartbroken. I think we've all been there
Respect to the band esp trumpet for expressing perfectly the outrage at lowlife. And RIP Heathcote Williams who co-wrote the words
No matter what age she is, she always has that beautiful, pouty, model face. 💕
One of Marianne's best songs
Yes! For every woman ever cheated on. I still feel this!
MF book is an amazing read. Honestly one of the best memoirs I've ever read.
She's a freakn badass
And let is not forget: the lyric is by the wonderful British poet/playwright Heathcote Williams!
She's a great artist, one of the absolute best! Love her music!
Rock n Roll in all it's raw, royal greatness !!!

This was written for Tina Turner. Marianne told him "Tina will NEVER sing this. But I will!"
Love this version!
