Why is it that as a 65 year old from a non-urban environment and totally different musical background I feel such a strong musical kinship with what is coming out of this scene in London? Nubya, Shabaka, all the others, it's just great!

Hard to know. One possibility is that - in a sense - jazz is a foreign language to any non-American, and they're going to speak it with a foreign accent. But that's not a weakness, and it can be a strength. People from other countries have listened to different pop music, they aren't tied to Black American musical roots, they have different cultural concerns, and they can and do bring a fresh perspective to the music. For a start, Britain is a whole lot closer to Africa, and there are plenty of genuine African musicians living and touring there. So you'll hear thing like Sons Of Kemet's ferocious rolling groove, that Americans wouldn't do the same way.

why even ask the question--"is it jazz?" the question should be "is it good?" i'm sick of some people trying to put musicians in a box so they can file them away.

JerryAttric42 Yes! Yes! I agree so am I sick of it. It’s music and it sounds good. Not just a lot of scales and patterns it’s more than just that it’s a song that’s created from your mind. It has a beginning and an end. I think people are forgetting that’s what music is. Stop trying to be someone one else and do your thing and stop trying to repeat the music that has been done. Nothing wrong with playing some of it but it seem to be all these so called jazz musicians want to do. She is being creative and exploring the unknown.
