"Improvisation is a language that Im still trying to discover" -___- Yeah right cory..
To say after the Lingus solo is PROFANITY
bwevemuzk I think he's saying that improvisation is something you only tap into but never fully understand...so it's always something new to discover. Because when you grow, the music grows, thus, the music is always growing and what you want to do with the music always changes.
Musical "space" (as in the mathematical meaning of the word) is vast, no one has fully covered it yet. And if you listen to him in context Henry is correct anyway.
lol im not dense guys i know what hes saying. Im just saying that my man translates whale talk into klingon already.
mathematical "space" can be easily infinite and so toi say no one has covered it yet is trivial.
I watch him and can't help but just think... "damn, that guy is truly doing what he's meant to do"
A King Korg stacked on top of a Korg Kronos. Reminds me of the solo where I discovered this genius.
Yes it is, and blues and gospel, but mostly it is Corey Henry. He is in a class all his own. He instinctively plays bass with his feet, chords and melody and improvisation with his hands whilst singing lead.
The normally unflappable Louis Armstrong once got quite annoyed for being called an intuitive genuis. It's talent and hard, hard work.
I also love Dave Weckl's quote: "The more I practice, the more talented people say I am."
Andrew Scheldt c its bluezzy amd gospel...
At this point i dont even use the word "jazz" to define a genre, i just use it to compliment music that I enjoy. "Man this is Jazzy!" is the highest praise i can give
Pure blessed hands this guy is a phenomenon.
Cory's multi-tasking already completely blew my mind, and I now I find out that he can sing, as well as both hands on the organ, and foot bass. Ridiculous!
Cory has killer vocals! Love the vid, thank you!
yes yes yes of course he is one of the best musicians on the planet but his voice is truly truly nice!!!!
That's too much talent for one man!!!!! Continue putting it on the lamp stand !
I already knew he was an amazing talent on the keys but, vocals too! What a performer. Great drummer love it. UK.
I think it is jazz, without any doubt, but I don't see why it's so important to classify it. It's more important to listen and enjoy!
Divine. That's what it is
6:15 Very nice reharmonization, very subtle, I like it. (Jazz, well, what actually is jazz :-))
This man is a SENSATIONAL MINSTREL!!
That's my boy there blessing us all
Awesome indeed. THE LORD’S HAS GIFTED THIS YOUNG MAN IN THIS GENERATION AND BEYOND . MY HAT IS OFF TO YOU SIR. WE PRAY SOMEDAY SOON TO MEET YOU AND PLAY UNTILL OUR GOD SAYS ENOUGH .
YOURS BECAUSE OF CALVARY ,
Dr. Apostle R.A./Prophetess Sarah Warren
His ear is brilliant. Not just for the music and phrasing and runs but for the technical side of his instrument. Those keyboard rich warm sounds are so rich and textured. Edible sound
Gospel music touches emotional and spiritual places that jazz doesn't usually visit. Trying to split definition hairs is a waste of energy. Cory Henry has a unique instrumental voice that bridges a lot of gaps, and speaks to his church grounding.
Yes I feel the same way about being comfortable with an organ-drummer duo setup, from one organist to another.
A LEGEND!
Wow... everyone's got an opinion they can't explain cause they try too hard to sound like they got some kind of answer. What I get from what the man is saying, music is organic. It keeps morphing. There is no end only growth. Just listen to him play. I remember Miles was asked to define Music and he said, I'm working on that. Fortunate for all of us Cory and others like him found their paths early in life and have the genius to share it and for that I feel blessed.
Roy B i like this answer
Wo! He did "Yesterday" like George Shearing did back in the day.
"I don't like to play over peoples heads".... Dude you been doin that all your life! :-) Killer Stuff, as always!
Sry but english is not my first language. Can you explain what "play over peoples heads" means ?? Thank you
@@romainsanterre-theil782 it means that the form and construction of the music is atypical for what the average person expects and/or understands. CH is an extremely talented musicians. When he solos, you start to hear his non-standard approach to soloing. I hope this helps a little. its a huge topic and hard to explain in just one or two paragraphs.
@@santley88 I can understand how this is a deep topic but i think i can grasp it a bit. Thanks for the thorough answer !
When listen to Cory, much of the time I feel like I am listening "up". But it is an inspiring, joyful, effortless up, and not at all diminished by the altitude. His music is a gift to all who listen.
"...but is it jazz?" ...Should I care? Good music is good music, no matter what box you try to put it in.
ok ok .... but is it jazz??? Like real jazz?????????
Jazz? Yezz.
***** okay but is it REAL jazz though
okay, I'll stop.
Alf Torp...SO VERY WELL PUT!
To quote Miles himself:
MILES DAVIS: I don't like that word "jazz."
BG: You don't? What would you call it?
MD: I think social music. All the social melodies out in the air. There's no jazz anymore.
Truth. Less pigeonholes, more amazing music - like this!
If anyone has to ask if it is jazz then they don't know music...it's blues, it's R&B, it's soul, it's jazz, it's rock & roll, it's music, it's beautiful,. Do overthink it!
What a musical god! Man this cats been blessed.
It doesn't have to be jazz in order for it to be good and this is great music!
so much love cory Henry
"The way you make me feel" like you've never heard i before ;0)
Dude, it's jazz. That definition, especially these days, is pretty flexible... And your a beast. Keep it up!!!
HE CAN SING TOO???!!!
Dude, Cory got a nice voice too. He gotta drop some gems on a solo album.
Love you, Cory!
I'm your biggest fan.
Fure Eviosekwofa Not true, i am 😉
I would LOVE to hear Cory and Barbara Dennerlein do a Hammond organ smackdown. Please, you two, find a way to play together. ...You would burn the room!
Corey Henry is trying to "discover" improvisation like I'm trying to "discover" english.
If it isn't jazz (and I would argue strongly that it is) then it is jazz's profound loss. Mr. Henry is and has been phenomenal since early childhood.
what is this? singing too! OMG!
🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾 love 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾

Is the full piece that begins at 5.12 available anywhere? Either this version or another recording, but preferably this one.
Full Jazz
HE CAN SING THAT WELL??
gospel and jazz had an illegitimate baby and called it rocknroll
That's not Cory saying he doesn't like to play it too much lol
Nice voice,.didn't know he could sing.
🙏🏽
With a Shekeré/Xequerê on his chest.
Kinda reminds me of a Brooklyn James Booker...
What's that song at 5:12? :) I think I've heard it before, but I can't seem to remember the song's or the artist's name! ^^
who the fuck cares if its jazz or not, its good music
Cory is Fantastic! What the name of drummer?

Chops is chops........
Song at :05
What glasses are they ??
Ahmm have you thought about the blues?
Has cory thought about the blues? are you serious ahaa xD
haha not cory, the youtuber who uploaded this.
I miss the bass
no - it has a melody
Ray Charles incarnate?
ray not even close to him
He's better than ray. He was born with ray's talent.
James Van Metre Better? Have you heard the songs Ray has written?!?
Ray had a knack for melody, but this guy is a different story all together. He has a gift for improvisation and such a strong understanding of harmony to back it all up.
Heck noone can even deFINE Jazz. It is only the egocentric elitists who THINK they can. Is it working in upper structures? Is it the heavy use of "color" notes? Is it improvisation? Is it swing? Is it the bebop scale? NONE of these is exclusive to the "genre." Nor is any COMBINATION of these things. "Jazz" is just as diluted as everything ELSE!
God why not just ask if it's a polka? The most anti-musical and anti-artistic question one cold ask. God, asinine. Listen to what he's expressing and the tools and emotional caharcter he's laying down? Can he PLAY the hell out of straight up jazz? Yes. I ABHOR transparently judgmental crap like this. Can the person who posted this play jazz, funk, gospel, blues? If so, why pigeonhole Henry wit a sophomoric question like that? If not, please be quiet because you are commenting on things you don't even understand. "Is it jazz?" is bad enough, but the word prefacing those words being the word "but" shows that there is judgment.

"but is it jazz? is a live concept presented by The Writer's Bench, featuring the best in adventurous jazz related music and beyond..."
It's in the video description. The question could be interpreted as elitist and judgemental - just as you thought it was. But I believe it's safe to assume that the title of this "live concept" just plays with those expectations of this question. In other words: It's a light hearted joke. Don't put a spoon in your eye over it. ;)
whats the name of the song he's singing on 1:32 ? plz help..
drown in my own tears. ray charles
