Catherine you make everything so simple. The ladies have a keepsake from the retreat. First tote bags that I made were for grocery shopping back in the late 80’s. My kids were learning in school how to be environmental friendly. So I have been using them ever since. My daughter used one as her Landry bag for camp. They were made from white heavy cotton. So easy to launder, back then the geocerycashiers really didn’t like my home made bags because they took longer to pack . The bags were not the same size as the plastic bags. I think that I still have one today 45years later.❤❤❤
Why does your narration remind me of Bob Ross. That is not an insult. I love Bob Ross’s soothing voice. But it’s not only that it’s the “that little corner just hanging out inside” sounds like something he would say if he was a sewer. Lovely job altogether!
Oh my goodness, if I were attending, I would be so thrilled to get a bag like this one. And to have it hand made by you makes it even more special. I love watching your videos. Thank you.
This tutorial was really fun to watch! It gave me some wonderful tips too! God has blessed you with the ability to show others how to sew, taking the fear out of sewing. I'm sure your students are so happy they're in your class, Catherine. ❤
Wow! What a gift. Wouldn't we all like a bag with your logo on it, handmade by you?! Takes me back to the time when I sewed 40 little gift bags for my daughter's little pendant business!
Very good demonstration of a way to construct a sturdy tote bag which might make a nice gift for a birthday or Christmas, especially if you chose themed fabrics. Could be made with a lining or interior pockets if someone wants to add those. I’m saving this video to my gift ideas folder for future reference.😉
OMG This is my favorite video thank you so much!!! Why my favorite? I'm still a beginning sewist and only have an old sewing machine, big ironing board and rulers (no rotary cutter). This is a project I CAN do without thinking about "if I don't have..." and I LOVE the efficiency. Although I don't need 12 tote bags I'm going to make a handful or 10 :) I can always use more totes. This weekend is my sewing weekend at home so the video came just in time-this is THE project this weekend. I'm so excited! Thank you!!!
First, I love your new logo! That was a simple project. You are right about looking in the upholstery dept as there are some beautiful patterns there as well. Thank you!
Another great video Catherine! You and your craftsmanship are an inspiration. ❤ Thank you for taking us along the journey and sharing this with us. ❤ Absolutely love the top you have on. ❤ It looks comfortable and casual. ❤ Headed to search your channel for a tutorial! 😊
Sorry to be missing your mini retreat. It would be very fun. Tote bags are something I make a lot of. It has been my quest this year to repurpose as much textile waist from my own trash as possible. I piece together scraps from any sewing project as well as non donatable clothing and make them into cinchable gift bags or totes. These I give away to anyone who will take them. 😸
Those turned out sew nice! I just started my first solo (outside of a classroom) sewing project at home and in perfect timing with this video it’s a tote! I was paying extra close attention to see the differences in technique with the Craftsy instructor and I think I may shift gears and incorporate your strap technique instead. Thanks Catherine! Always enjoy your videos ❤
Good explanation really good ideas to cut 12 bags one at a time never ever seen before ❤ Love you Jesus bless 🙌 this sister 🙏 🙌 so in future plans to do something 😀 so that I can start from small business 😀 like me retired persons to do something which we can sew and earn our daily bread 🍞 😀 God bless 🙌 you sister and your family abundantly Amen 🙏
I'm so glad you made this video. I upcycle chinos into lined totes and I make all the straps like this. I'm forever slipping off the edge and feel guilty that I don't unpick and resew. But now I feel much better that I just go back to the right line and sew right over it.
So awesome to see you with all the ladies at the end. What did you take in school to become such a fabulous sewer with so many incredible ideas? Fashion design maybe?
I love this idea, I am going to make my Christmas gift bags this way I know its early but I like to be organised , I made some last year using draw strings but this is better & I think a neater alternative. I have made quite a few of your up cycles & they always turn out, thank you so much, I wonder if you realise how amazing you are & thanks for sharing 👍🖐
You are so welcome! It was so great having you on the retreat! Thanks so much for being such a wonderful part of the group! You provided some of the best quotes: "Don't yuck my yum!" "Women should take up as much space as they want!"🥰
Info ** Straps: 3 inches wide by 24 inches length Body of the bag: 38.5 inches length by 18 inches wide Plus mark at 4 inches from the sides where to attach the straps. Very nice bags! Thank you @Catherine Sews for this nice informative video! Merci beaucoup!
Did I miss where you said what type and weight of fabric you're using? They look really great. Love your new logo!! Edit: Thanks for the fabric info! They're very nice.
If you use drop cloth, be sure to prewash it. Also, drop cloth has a slightly looser weave and often has slubs in it. I think that just adds to the charm. I used drop cloth fabric last year to make aprons (wraparound for girls and traditional bbq style for guys) for myself, husband, all my kids, in-laws and grandkids. A total of 19 aprons in about 2 weeks. I got a pair of jeans from each of my sons, son-in-law and husband and used the back pockets for a chest pocket and sit out letters from my dad’s flannel shirt to appliqué their initial above the pocket.
Oh my goodness, Catherine, how did I miss this?? You are leading a group in Seattle? Sounds excellent and the gift bags are lovely. You made them so quickly! I need to do this for my Holiday gift sewing. I'm a bit confused. I thought you live in Canada. Are you in the Seattle area? We are heading to NE Canada for a couple of weeks. I can't wait. Take care and enjoy your students. I want to hear about future classes. Where do I sign up for future notifications ?-Claudia
I am thinking about mass producing several of these for Christmas presents. I have recently looked into buying a Cricut. Unfortunately, they are more than I want to spend (or have excess funds to) right now. I will thinking about some alternatives for personalization.
Awesome. Nice size bags. Lucky gals to get a new tote. I'm thinking about getting a Cricut to do tshirts. Approximately how did each iron on cost? Also, how is the Cricut programmed to print what you want? I know they are not new but I've never used one.
I love your tutorials. But, Catherine, isn't that neckline a bit low for a teacher? Especially since you have male students who might watch your videos ? I thought you were more modest.
She is at home doing a video, not in a classroom with teenagers. Aren’t you a bit prude? If you ever go on a beach, you will see more skin than this video, and so will these male students that you are talking about. Plus, I followed listening her instructions, I didn’t look at what she was wearing.

Yes! ❤
Catherine's voice is so soothing and light. It is so useful in putting me in the mood to be creative.
@@PeachyNanaUK Catherine IS the bomb!!!
Her voice is so soothing that I watch her video as my lullaby to sleep. Every damn day.❤️
I love this comment so much! ❤
It's funny that you call that seem a French seem, in France we call it an English seem !!!! Love the tote bags !!! 👍😎
Looking forward to seeing the video of the retreat! Lucky ladies with their tote bags!!

Very nice, Catherine! Congratulations and best wishes for the success of your event. You are such a pleasure to watch.
❤ Those tote bags will make very nice gifts. Thank you.
They are very professional looking ❤
Thank you Catherine. The bags are PERFECT in person and we all have your NEW logo!!!❤❤🎉
I love your new emblem. Good job.
You have no idea how timely this is! Excited for you and your fellow retreaters! ❤
Your bags are lovely! Good job.

French seams, oh la la!! I have been enjoying using French seams.

Beautiful.
What a great detailed tutorial. Nice work, beautiful keepsake bag for those retreat attendees. ❤❤
Can you imagine the excitement of the attendees to, amount other things, actually receive a bag they witnessed being made on this channel!

Great and useful way to practice French seams. Tfs.

Funny that I want to make a couple of totes. I couldn't believe the serendipity of this. Thanks be to this nice coincidence.
Nice project.

You should offer this as merchandise that people can buy. Going to make this with some fabric scraps 😊
You're amazing
have fun!!
Great looking totes!
Wonderful. Wish there was room for us to join you, maybe next year
I like your new logo. Good luck
Very nicely done.....loved it ❤❤❤❤❤
That is one huge workroom.

I have used a canvas drop cloth in the past

or drop cloths for canvas, like your friend did that one time!
They look great and I really like the new logo. Can you tell us what fabric you used for the bags?
Wooooot!
👍🏻
As far as bargain canvas is concerned, another UA-camr suggested buying hardware store canvas drop cloths for tote bags fabric.
Please do another retreat!
Hello, is that calico fabric that you are using? I love that type of material.
would a drop cloth work for the yardage? Or, is it too thick? I hope you have a great time in Seattle and I'd love to know which stores you went to.
Yes, a dropcloth would work great! The retreat was awesome. I'll post a video about it soon!

Where are you going? NE in Canada, Nouvelle-Ecosse (name in French) or Nova Scotia.
I am thinking about mass producing several of these for Christmas presents. I have recently looked into buying a Cricut. Unfortunately, they are more than I want to spend (or have excess funds to) right now. I will thinking about some alternatives for personalization.
Just curious, what kind of fabric are you using?
Looking forward to seeing lots of pictures and video! Love your channel! New logo looks great!

It comes with special software for designing. It’s loaded with different fonts or you can design your own. Very fun!

Thankfully a grown man is civil and different than a grown dog. Either way, grown women can’t be responsible for the thoughts of either.
