  • Hello everyone,
Thank you for clicking on this video, great to have you back or welcome if you're new!
Today's video is quite a different tone to my normal videos. I'm sharing a part of my journey that was negative and is very sensitive to me so I please be kind.
It all comes as part of my aim during lockdown to be a support to the teaching community and help teachers to know they are not alone in any negative feelings they have; if they're going through a tough time, they're won't be the first and to generally be more honest about the training journey.
If you enjoyed this video, please give this video a like and subscribe/hit the bell so you can be notified when I post future teacher training videos!
Also, please feel free to share any experiences you have below and be kind to others!
    See you soon,

It’s true, you don’t often hear how real teaching can be, I am on my PGCE journey and not 1 single lecturer has shared such experiences. I have thought about moments like this and what happens when things don’t go to plan, as you say you pick yourself up (all be it over time) and come back stronger.
You might not even be the person you are today without that experience. You really do articulate your words so brilliantly and I admire how genuine and honest this story was. I have watched a few of your videos tonight, it had me deep in thought and offered a moment of personal reflection. I am going to take a few leaves out of your book, especially the one about letting go, thank you.

Thank you Cassie for SUCH a beautiful comment.
I think it's important in life to be honest and realistic and although teaching is incredibly and so rewarding, it's not all easy sailing, nor should people give the impression it is.
I'm glad that this video and some others helped! It's important to me to be able to support others when I feel like my support lacked during my training.
      Thank you again #UnlockTeachTalk xx

I don't think the lectueres on PGCE courses, are really all that aware of what they are doing. Nor do they really understand more about teacher training, apart from "blame the trainee" at all times and in all places. The immature mentor that you describe, with her bullying mentality - sadly I think that is the norm.

  • @scinformation7229
    @scinformation7229 Рік тому +12

Word has got round about the bullying that goes on via PGCE SCITT and also in the Universities. Very few trainees escape the type of bullying that you excellently describe. As a result, people don't want to do teacher training.

So brave of you to share this story and it sounds like, if anything, it has made you a better teacher! @@PetitePrimary It’s mainly struggling with the workload. Having the stress of the pandemic and not socialising over the summer has also affected me. I did reach out and had a meeting with my provider. They told me not to pressure myself too much and to think of coping strategies. I feel so much better mentally now but my organisation is still not where it should be. I was also late by 2 hours in my second week on placement. I don’t think I’m going to pass this placement as a result and I’ve just accepted it. I’m praised after most observations and I’m evidencing my bundle. Generally it seems that the first week is mostly observing, however, you might run a little group or interventions etc. They encourage you to start teaching by week 2. Hi Frances, thanks for commenting and sharing. Are you expected to find your own training placement then?
Following the cause for concern I had an intervention plan put in place alongside the normal, regular targets you're given. In the next meeting, my mentor and I had to give proof that I was meeting the targets of the intervention plan. Around January the plan was dropped as I had proven it all, but some additional targets to "make sure I stayed in track" were given. Afterwards, I got more check ups than others to "see how I was doing." So that's how I had to prove myself in order for my grading to go from cause for concern to good.
Hope that makes sense and helps xx

Thank you for sharing. I am so terrified of something like this happening on my course. I haven’t gone into schools yes, but from late November I’ll start my first placement. I heard my first school is really nice and the ofsted a few years ago said the behaviour is very good! So I hope it will be a nice place to start training.
Behaviour is something we all need to deal with at teachers but as you said it is hard. With all the other things to do behaviour management on top is one of the hardest things because it can create stress, especially for new teachers.
It sounds like the feedback you were given was really hard. I think it is right for you to say if this or that was good for them, and that you know your students. I’m sure there are things that could have gone better. But I sounds like some more understanding in your feedback would have been more appropriate. You were a new trainee. You’re not going to get everything right. There was still so much to learn. It sounds like it was unfair to say the whole class was out of control because it sounds like that wasn’t the case. And again, I think if you feel like feedback is unfair it’s right to say how that behaviour compares to other days. It’s just ok to say it could have been better too.
It sounds like they just really didn’t listen to you or consider the bigger picture. I think they were too harsh. Really sorry no one stuck up for you more at that time. You shouldn’t have been left feeling that way.
I worked in a day school in China. In grade four there were so many difficult classes. One class in particular was so difficult because so many of the class were naughty. I didn’t have many BM techniques and even things we would use here weren’t so possible in the cultural / school context over there.
I found BM easier In classes when it was maybe two or three students but once it starts becoming more consistently it gets really hard. In those harder classes i would spend more time on BM than teaching.
It caused me huge stress but at least over there I didn’t have the pressures of observations. Literally no one cared haha!
But the fact I had other classes that were so lovely and enjoyed the lessons I did told me it wasn’t just that I was a bad teacher. Moreover, I found out that all the Chinese teachers found those other classes really difficult too. Just it may have been easier for them because they could tell them off in Chinese and probably contact the parents which would scare them haha!

Wow Ruth, thanks for the long comment, you must've taken so much time out of your day to write this!
I agree with like everything you said haha and I must admit that's one thing I like about PPA. If I feel like I had a tough class or a bad lesson, I talk to them and often they had the same experience. It helps remind me I'm not a bad teacher it was just a bad lesson or a bad day for them. When you're in training, unless you do multiple placements, you often don't get that privilege so can get caught up on negative lessons or negative feedback because you think it's all you.
I'm glad you have had that experience too or at least confirmation from other staff that they have difficulties with BM of those children too.
Thanks again for watching and supporting me with this and generally xx

Need to be careful going into schools. Everything you do and say is being mentally recorded!!
I felt the same as you for my first placement last year for secondary. I think tutors need to tell the truth, but some of them can be on the verge of being impolite or bullies.
I think the lesson here is to just put on a shallow smile and nod to their feedback, and don't say much otherwise you can dig a hole.
It also doesn't help that universities don't always give back up in these situations. You are being graded essentially by a third party and not the University (not sure how this works for schools direct). They can do whatever they want and treat you whatever way they want. No one tells you this going into your PGCE!

I was wary of uploading this but I thought that if a school couldn't acknowledge my passion and growth from experience and that they use my first month of training "against" me, maybe its not the supportive environment I need to be in.
I definitely tried to put on the shallow smile and nod, but I also think that just because we're trainees doesn't mean we can't voice our opinion or explain the situation. It's a fine line between that and being viewed as defensive sadly.
I'm sorry to hear about your experience in secondary. May I know what happened?
I have heard of some extremely supportive universities and others that offered no support, to the point that the student just had to leave the placement instead! I did a PGCE with a university but my actual teacher training was with a SCITT partnership so I can't really comment on that.
      Thanks for commenting 😊

@@PetitePrimary Thank you for sharing your story, too, despite it being upsetting. It is not acceptable for teachers you work with to be grouchy or give unreasonable or discouraging feedback. Comments should be given within reason. I felt like I was starting to get the hang of the teaching routine and felt I fit into the department fine, until some negative comments were said to me, that made the smile and enthusiasm wipe off my face. Atmosphere and dynamic between me and teachers I was working with changed. It was awkward.
Student teachers do not deserve this. We are not getting paid a penny to do this work, there is no respect and this should change - but it won't.
To put a long story short, the first school I worked with were not supportive. Asking to redo lesson plans (3 pages for 1 lesson wasn't detailed enough, apparently). Not willing to share what they would do for a lesson, or activity ideas/worksheets. Accused of being unprofessional for asking in a lesson if they should copy down a note. Getting into trouble for not knowing where pens, scissors, test tubes etc are in classroom. Being accused of saying and doing various things. Not being included in conversations. Be extremely careful what you say. Some people you work with are total psychopaths or just control freaks. The university/people don't understand how much this affects us, especially as a first experience 😭😭😭😭

That is exactly the problem. The University lecturers and school mentors, have been getting away with bullying for a long time. I think @PetitePrimary and others who get onto youtube and tell the truth about what is going on - really have warned people away from doing the PGCE. Numbers of candidates are at an all time low. I believe this is down to trainees being bullied.
