Setting up flaps, flaperons, or spoilerons in ETHOS

- In this video we go through the process of setting up flap, flaperons, or spoilerons on your ETHOS transmitter. This is a pretty simple process thanks to the mixes that ETHOS provides. But, there are a couple of little changes to get them working just nice.
Flaps are used on models with their own flap control surfaces. So our flap mix will be just controlling these surfaces. If you don't want to use full span ailerons, you can use a Y-lead for the flaps, so long as the servos move the surfaces in the same directions. You can use a Y-lead on your ailerons, if you don't want to use crow braking.
Flaperons and spoilerons work on the aileron control surfaces. They are mostly used because you don't have separate flaps. In essence, flaperons and spoilerons are set up the same. Only for flaperons, both ailerons go down. With spoilerons, both ailerons go up. Flaperons, like flaps are used to generate lift, so that you can fly more slowly. However, spoilerons are used to spoil the airflow, killing the lift, and getting the plane to sink.
In this video, I use a slider for the flap control. But it could be a 3 position switch. In that case, you could use a 3 point curve, and use the middle point to tune your first position flaps.

You do a really good job of articulating how to setup a model using flaperons on Ethos. Thanks for this. This is what I needed after being used to opentx to see what it takes for Ethos.
Thanks Adam. I’m glad the video was helpful.
Thank you for these videos man, I appreciate it!
Great tutorial. I've been watching tons of videos trying to choose a transmitter and I keep coming back to the X20S-blue. It looks like such a beauty. It's probably good that no one has them in stock or I would be much poorer by now.
They do feel great in the hands to 🤣 With each new update to ETHOS they keep getting better too. A nice thing I found the other day. If you’re plugged in to your computer, like to use an RC simulator. The transmitter will charge at the same time.
I’d always recommend getting one in your hands if you can, no matter which transmitters you’re thinking of getting. Make sure they feel comfortable to you. We all have different physicalities after all.
Hello Mr.D thanks once again for your creating help .
Yours tutorial are extremely. Belive me I feel realy sure that whatever problem I will face in the future ,concernig my X20S TX, you will be my instructor and for this I feel thankful .
Now I know how to use the ail. as flp ,flaperon, to my spor plane.
To have a nice week.
Thank you Fanis. I’m glad the videos help 🙂
good job - even though I am not in the ethos world, but good to know that there is an alternative that seems to work and is achieving progress.
It is certainly getting better with each release Wolf. The touch screen keyboard is just great. Hopefully the EdgeTX guys will get something like that for touchscreen OpenTX radios. A lot of the traditional flying stuff is pretty straight forward.
Hi Darren, was a great help thanks so much 😁
Thank you Philip. I'm glad the video is helpful.
Great video, exactly what I needed, thanks so much.
I'm glad it helped :)
Just purchased the blue Tandem X20 with TD R10 package from Horus. Stoked!
Have fun with that transmitter :)
Very, very nice tutorial, thank you!
You're welcome Bo, I'm glad it helped.
Excellent vid, new radio coming on Monday, so will be in regularly for assist :) transferring images will be the same as the Horus 12 i imagine.
Its a great radio Cain. I’m sure you’ll enjoy it. Yes, the model images should be the same. All that I copied over from my X10S Express worked without issues. Places like Sky Racoon also have X20 images now too.
By the way. Thank you for becoming a Patreon supporter. It means a great deal.
Muy claro el video, gracias a el pude configurar flaperones
Thanks, I’m glad the video was helpful 👍🏻
When I set up flaps I put them on 2 different channels and then assigned a 3 position switch. I put the switch in the first position with the servo arm off. I put the servo arm on with the switch in the first position so it would only move down when I went in the other 2 positions. This seems to work for standard flaps.
Great Video thanks
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it
Thanks!
Thank you Ed 👍🏻
Thank you for the intro to flaps video!! Q: How do we adjust servo arm throws? Cheers!!
Throws are adjusted using the different holes on the servo arm and control horn. Closer to the servo is less throw. Closer to the control surface is more throw. This video is for iNav. But the physical throw parts are the same ua-cam.com/video/tGRDZzaerOE/v-deo.html
Extremely helpful as always, much appreciated Darren! recently moved to x20s from IX20 (my "Signal Holds" king) so I'll be watching many more of your vids. Luv your demo plane -any chance you can share a link to a file so i can have one cut pls? tia
Phank you for the video!!!!!
You’re welcome 👍🏻
Great info. Would you show how to set flaperon with elevator mix as well.
Thanks Didi. I'll make a follow-up.
👍
Great video as usual, thanks…what about using a 3 position switch like no flaps-tkof flaps-landing flaps rather than a slide switch ?
Thanks Raphael. Yes, the 3 position switch will work just fine. You can add a curve to the switch to get the right level of flap required. Also there is the slow feature, so that the flaps extend and retract gradually.
Wondering if you could walk us through a full butterfly mix with elevator curve compensation that follows deployment... Thank for your videos, really helps us noobs
Hi Darrell. I'll add it to the list. To be honest, on my planes, I've not used elevator compensation with crow, as I find that with my setup, the flap and aileron are pretty balanced. But I can appreciate that this won't be the case on all models.
Nice tutorial. Looking for a little help. Looking to setup full spain ailerons, and crow/butterfly on a plane. Have you done this in any of your videos? Thanks!
Hi Darren, great videos, keep ‘em coming! One question, having set up elevons with my x20s I have a question, the elevator trim is reversed even though the stick movement is correct. How can I rectify the elevator trim direction? Thanks, Peter
How do you program Ailerons, elevator with different up and down turns?
As an example 15 mm up and 7 mm down.
The examples assume the same values up and down
Hi Darren, I keep coming back to your vids when setting up. Really useful so thank you! How do you change the deploy speed of the flaps in the flap settings? Successfully set up flaperons on a freewing F16 and flown 10 flights with the new Frsky x20, thanks to your help. Ant
Hi Ant. I'm glad the video has been helpful.
To change the deployment speeds, you can change the Slow Up and Slow Down parameters in the mixer or the outputs.
@@MrD thanks a lot I’m going to give this a go!
@@MrD I’m having a slight issue. As I have flaperons, Aileron 1 is in to Ch1 and Aileron 2 is in Ch7. When I change the slow down speed in the outputs menu settings, it also has an effect on the ailerons due to both flaps and ailerons functioning off Ch1 and Ch7. I can’t seem to find an option for slow down speed in the mixer menu on my flap mix. Any ideas? Thanks-Ant
It is a pain that not all options are in some mixes that will benefit from them. If you use a free mix, as opposed to the flaps mix. The slow should be there.
Sorry Anthony, your other reply seems to have been removed.
Of you use a free mix for the flaperons. You can set the slow in there and is has no effect on the ailerons. I’ve just tested it and it works fine. It will only effect both controls if the slow is performed in the outputs.
Thank you so much for the flaperon video. I have a question , I did bind an ACCST S8R receiver to an ETHOS Tandem X20 HD Transmitter. Everything work OK , stabilization, Hover, Knife flight, but the Aileron servos acted weird, they rotate 45degrees to one direction and only approx. 22.degrees. to check this glitch I bound the S8R to a Taranis QX7 and had the same issue. Do you believe it could be a Firmware issue? Some recomendatios?
Thanks Salsordo
To be honest, it is hard to say. From my experience, the control surfaces have moved pretty evenly. My first though would be the control linkage geometry has got a lot of differential present.
When neutral, is the control rod at 90 degrees to the servo horn?
If you disable stabilisation, how do the surfaces act?
Hey I have a problem with my carnards they move opposite to the elevators 😊
I am looking to set up a throttle rudder mix. Would it be similar to this video?
If not, it would be great if you could do one please?
There is a mix in ETHOS for Thr => Rud. This should do what you want straight away.
@@MrD Thank you. That's done the trick
Is there a function where expo and rates can be set? I can’t seem to locate it. Thanks.
Rates and expo are set up in the mixes ua-cam.com/video/lVYHCbXAD18/v-deo.html
Molto belli i tuoi video... complimenti.
Hi Darren great video how do I do flaperons with r4 receiver please
You can’t unfortunately, unless you don’t have a rudder. You need to use 2 channels for the ailerons.
@@MrD I’ve got ch 1 and 2 on ailerons 3 elevator 4 on rudder Darren I have a DLG glider thank you for your reply I’m on my own as the local club don’t want to know DLGs
@@mikebell9536 that will work then. Just follow the video and the flaperons section, using your channels 1 and 2.
how do you mix the elevator to the flaps
I will make a video on this soon 👍🏻
Man, Ethos looks pretty nice. It’s clearly the same OpenTX interface, but just spending a few minutes making it “pretty” seems to make a world of difference. Plus a touch-screen that actually looks responsive (ever tried an iX12? *gah*)…
It’s not quite the same. The main coder is the same guy who wrote OpenTX, so there are a lot of similarities. But also quite a few differences. Someone used to OpenTX would be caught out by a couple of things if they tried to do everything the same. But it would also be familiar enough to catch on pretty quickly. For new pilots, it is more friendly.
The touch screen is nice. Probably better than it looks on the video, due to the angle I have the transmitter to record. I can’t see where I’m supposed to be touching so well. They keyboard part is awesome too. I’ve not tried an IX 12, but by that reaction I guess I wouldn’t want to 🤣
Hey Mr. D.I just bought a Tandem X20 and your videos have been a God-send at the manual leaves much to be desired. However, I was wondering if you plan on showing a setup for a typical six servo glider. I've been able to figure out most things but Flight Modes/Butterfly and other glider-centric settings still have me baffled. I'm sure there are many more glider pilots in the same position as me as the radio is fairly new. Any chance of helping out us pure glider guys?
REPLY
Hi Vaughn, glad the videos help. I've not used and don't have a 6 surface wing glider unfortunately. So it would be difficult for me to do this at the moment. For regular 4 servo wing gliders, the E-Soar transmitter models are excellent. They have calibration modes that work so well the gliders hardly ever need trim. rc-soar.com/ethos/
@@MrD thanks for your tutorials, they’re really helping me go from OTX (which I’d half mastered) to Ethos - I do have one question though. When using a flap mix to drive ailerons up and flaps down, I run out of mixers (4) when it comes to adding elevator comp, any ideas? Cheers, Elliot.
When setting up flaperons and assigning the same channel as the ailerons, what happens if you hit “Yes” when prompted to “swap settings” at 7:04 ?
It will swap the 2 channels over. Not something you want to do in this situation. But can be useful other times.
Was wondering if you may be able to help me out? I'm running a Flysky FS-IA6B receiver with a TX16s transmitter. My FMS T28 has the ailerons and flaps wired with Y cables. How do I get my flaps to go in the same direction? It works for my ailerons but obviously not for my flaps. I will watch the video again, but any help would be appreciated. Also, I can't flip or install the servo any other way without doing some modification.
Hi Tomas. It depends on the servos on the plane. If they are facing the same direction (not mirrored), they should be ok with a Y lead. If not, you would need to either wire the flaps separately, use a servo reverser on one of the flaps, or open up one of the flap servos and swap some wires. I've not done the last one myself. I usually use separate connections for all 4 wing control surfaces.
I am configuring a Tandem X20 (Ethos) with an SR10 Pro for a P-51 Mustang. The aircraft has inner gear doors for the main retracts. When the gear is lowered the doors open first, the main gear extends and the doors close. When the gear is retracted the doors open the gear comes up and the doors close. I suspect this can be done with logic and function but I don't know where to start. Can you help?
Hi RJ, thanks for reaching out. Sorry about the delay, but work is pretty hectic for me at the moment.
To be honest with you, I've not looked in to this too much. I know there was talk of implementing a gear door sequencer on the GitHub. But, I've not seen much on this yet. I'm sure that it can be done with logic. The crazy thing is I'm sure I've seen an example on the GitHub, but couldn't find it when I had a quick look. Maybe drop me an email (via my web site) or join my Discord server (I'll put the link in the video description), and we can look further. Though please appreciate that I'm pretty pushed for time for the next few weeks.
“RC gear door sequencer” might work for your P-51.
ok so because of your video I was able to set up my x20 and acquired connection between the radio and receiver. All control surfaces respond but the flaps. I followed your step by step procedure and assigned flaps to switch G. Checked the output and is in fact working. Everything on the radio works fine. But flaps on my plane don't respond when I flip switch G. Connection to channel 5 is ok coz when I plug in the flaps servo the flaps move down. What do you think is the issue? Thanks.
What receiver are you using?
@@MrD TD R10.
That receiver can have configurable ports. It's worth checking that port 5 is outputting the signal from channel 5. I don't have one of those receivers here to test, or see what it's set to by default unfortunately. There is a section in the manual called "How to configure channel ports" which shows where to see if the Ch 5 is being output. www.frsky-rc.com/wp-content/uploads/Downloads/Manual/TD%20R10/TD%20R10%20Manual.pdf
@@MrD I’ve actually figured it out. Flaps working now. Even mixed it with elevator. Thanks so much for your usual helpful replies! 👍👍👍
Hi Darren a question in regard to Flap => Ele mix, I have a 2 second delay to deploy each postion of flaps, going up and down. How could I make the Elevators in the Flap=> Ele mix move with the same 2 second delay? I cannot find an option.
It looks like that mixer doesn't have the slow up or down. I would just use a Free Mix, set the source to the flaps and the output channel to the Elevator. If you set the up and down weight to 10%, it will be the same as the default for the Flap => Ele mix.
I'll add a request to get slow added to Flap => Ele.
@@MrD Thanks. In the Flap => Ele mix I set source to flaps and it slowed down the elevator. I had a 3 point curve to set values for the elevator compensation triggered by the same switch as the flaps but when I selected the Flap as trigger source, the three point curve would not work. I changed it to a two point curve, that I think is doing the same , as if I change the curve for the weight option you describe. It would be easier if they include the delay option in the mix.
Yes it would definitely be easier if the speed was included in the mix. I don’t know why the curve would stop working. You would definitely want to have different movement for the different stages of the flap compensation.
Hi Darren , do you know if you can add retracts or a electronic ignition switch into the transmitter, I've tried has me stumped to where it is, there doesn't seem to be a channel set aside for these, thanks Philip
Yes, they should only need a free mix as both those things are just switches. I’m going through the ignition part myself at the moment; setting up a model for my Wots Wot XL. That doesn’t have the retracts. But does have ignition and choke.
@@MrD I'm sorting out a lysander and a skybolt, it's been a mission 😂😂😂😂
I bet. I can make a video for retracts. Its a shame I don’t have any models with separate gear servos or doors. As that could have been good for sequencing.
I can also make a video on the ignition, though I’d have to demo it with a servo. I guess that part doesn’t matter so much, as you’d just see an LED anyway. I have mine so that it can be turned on independent of throttle cut. But when you cut, it kills the ignition too.
@@MrD I've been using a aftermarket switch hooked into the reciver, flick a switch and it kills the power to the module, works great if I can work out transmitter I've done so with a futarba transmitter, easy as
Sounds like a good idea. I just have a regular switch for the ignition on the plane. Power on one side, ignition on the other. But you still have to control the ignition from the transmitter.
Just checked out my model again. For the ignition, I use the momentary button on the rear left of the transmitter. Pressing it turns the ignition on. Pressing again will turn it off. Switching on the throttle cut will also turn off the ignition if it is on.
Is this mix permitted when a 3 axis gyro is installed ?
The mix its self shouldn’t be a problem. The only times you may end up with issues is if you are using a self levelling mode. If you are too slow and stall, a self levelling mode will tend to do all the wrong things. Though this is also true without any of the flap/flaperons/spoilerons mixes. If you’re just using basic stabilisation, there shouldn’t be a problem.
@@MrD Thanks So Much .1 I'm a new user to this Brand and have much to learn. Although your tutorials certainly make it much easier !!!
How can i useVirtual Keyboard -in X20S/X20 .
It was added with firmware version 1.0.10
yes. install a recent version in your transmitter. It has a virtual keyboard and looks and feels very nice.
THAT TX
You like? I have the same (new to me) and am finding it very nice. Programming flexibility and ease with Ethos, touch & wheel interface is excellent.
Your videos are good but you go too fast!
Sorry about that Ken. It is hard to find a balance. Though I can see that one is a bit fast.
