  • This video continues on from my last video on setting up a model using ETHOS. I had a few people ask about setting up the SxR with ETHOS. So here is that video. In it, I set up my S8R receiver, this of course will work with the S6R too. I cover the quick mode, which gives you manual, stabilised, and self levelling modes. Plus a gain knob, to dial the stabilisation strength, and an Oh crap switch, to automatically level the model. I also cover how to reverse the channels if the stabilisation is not going the correct way.

    As usual a very nice demonstration on set-up. Not nearly as easy as Spectrum but Ethos certainly makes it easier than before. Considering changing to FrySky because we lose signal periodically, not with FrySky but it still is more complicated, I’m on the fence.

      To be honest, once you’ve set this stuff up a couple of times in ETHOS, it becomes easy. There’s always a little learning with something new. But that little bit of learning will probably save you a lot of fixing models.

    Just a couple of points, the 'oh crap' switch only needs to pass through centre 3 times in 3 seconds, then wait a few seconds for the Rx to go into self check and calibrate mode, once you have done the deflections, raise/blip the throttle to leave the calibration mode.

    Hi Darren, nice video to setup the SxR receiver in Ethos. I followed the instructions thoroughly (twice). The switches are working. However I don't understand what the gain pot should do. I see its working in the mixer setup, but see no effect on their output on one of the three servos I connected. Also both stabilizor and Oh Crap switches are doing exactly the same. They respond on moving the receiver though. So apparently I missed something, or don't know what the next steps are. E.g. do I now need to adjust each output channel (expo, min max etc)?

    • @MrD
      @MrD  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Ron. The pot adjusts the gain of the gyro. So if you turn it anti-clockwise, the movements will get less, clockwise they will increase. This is easiest to see in the self-levelling mode. It can be really useful to crank the gain right up to test the stabilisation is moving in the right directions. Usually in flight this is around 30%, always less than half way.
      The Oh Crap switch from what I can tell, just puts it in self-levelling mode.
      It sounds like it's working. It just may be easier to see what's going on in a plane.

    Being a new owner of the X20S with no previous Frsky experience your videos are beyond valuable. My first setup is a flying wing using a S6R Rx. Set up the elevons as per your excellent video and everything works. Learned a lot too. Trying to incorporate the gyro has not gone as hoped. Have gone through the procedure 3 or more times but nothing happens on the model. The Rx LED flashes when heavily moved with gain doing nothing. In the "Mixes" the Gyro, Gain and OH Crap are greyed out no matter the switch positions. SxR (in Device Config) is set to Wing Rud Ele Ail although there is a setting for Delta wing ail/ Wing Flying which makes one control surface an aileron and the other an elevator. At this point I am gyro activation and use lost. Any ideas where to look?

I own 3 FrSky transmitters, Taranis QX7, Horus X10S Express and two weeks ago I got a Tandem X20. The radio seems to be working fine. However, I am in the process of setting up an airplane with an S8R, but I can not get the second aileron to respond when in stabilization or leveling mode, no matter what I do. I think I have tried to set up the receiver 20-30 different times. I have even re-flashed the receiver from OpenTX and with Ethos. Only Ail1 responds to stabilization. Is there a way to define for the receiver from ETHOS whether you are using 1 or 2 ailerons? I believe in OpenTX you have that option, after you calibrate and run the SxR lua script. Do you think either the TX or the receiver, on of them is defective? Any suggestion will be greatly appreciated. Also, I hope I keep receiving more of those excellent videos. Thanks a lot.

    • @MrD

      Yes, the outputs should face the rear of the aircraft. If your switches aren't functioning correctly, make sure that Quick Mode is enabled in the SxR Tool. When you do the self check, try to get the attitude of the aircraft as close to level flight as possible. The calibration on a level surface is fine.

      Would I be right in thinking your retracts and flaps are on channels 5 and 6. If so, go in to the SxR tool and look for AUX1 Enable and AUX2 Enable. These will need to be ON. Other wise they will act like the second channel for aileron and elevator servos.

    Been using these S6R receievers for a long while now and never had any trouble. Loaded latest S6R accst FW for D16 compatibility with X20 no trouble. Bound and calibrated using X20 no trouble.
    Self check and all separate channel gain adjustmens are grayed out, unselectable. Did this with 2 different receivers and same deal. Maybe the latest X20 FW is not working correctly with these functions?
    (addendum: FW v 1.1.2 and 1.1.3 leave above mentioned settings grayed out, inactive. FW 1.1.1 works as in your video).
    Another bizarre anomaly is if the landing gear are down and its in auto level mode, if you roll the aircraft inverted to check auto level it actuates control as expected but then the gear also retracts and extends as it's rolled through 360 degrees. Frustrated now as I have many of these receivers and am not about to replace them all. Also I did not know about the oh crap feature but never use it because if you are in autolevel mode it does the same thing and all you have to do is switch into autolevel mode from stabilized or manual switch position and aircraft recovers attitude immediately.
    Alos I think you can go pins forward you just have to go in and invert some control directions.

    • @MrD
      @MrD  2 роки тому

      Hi there. I did a check and found that the gain adjustments are greyed out if the SXR Enable is in the off position. This makes sense as there will be no stabilisation. If yours it on, it may be worth switching it off, exiting out, and switching it back on again. Maybe it will get it working. Just seen the addendum. Sounds like a bug in ETHOS in that case. It would be worth raising the issue on GitHub if it's not there already. I'll leave the first part, just in case it brings the options back.
      The retracts thing is weird. Do you have them on channel 5 or 6? If so, did you remember to turn on AUX1 Enable (for ch 5) or AUX 2 Enable (for ch 6). If not, it could be sending aileron or elevator stabilisation to that channel.
      The pins are always to the back with these receivers.

    How can I setup a second SxR redundant receiver?

    • @MrD

      Yes, the SRx receivers have SBUS in and can have a redundancy receiver attached. ACCESS makes things easier, as there are already 3 bind options per model.
      I will be making a video on redundancy, it’s already on my list. The process is basically bind the receivers individually to the same model. Then take the SBUS out of the redundancy receiver and plug it in to the SBUS IN of the master receiver.

    Found "MY" problem. It had nothing to do with the receivers or setup. "My" problem was with the Castle Creations e.s.c. setup. I do a "manual" setup of the e.s.c. First. Turn the radio and receiver on. Make sure your motor is not connected. Move throttle stick to maximum. Than in the throttle endpoints adjustments, reduce the maximum and minimum values to +25% and -25%. With the throttle stick still at maximum begin to increase the +25% value until to hear a couple of "tones" from the e.s.c. Than move the throttle stick to the "lowest" position. Begin to increase the -25% value until you hear the e.s.c. "arm" itself. The e.s.c. is ready to go. The problem is that these values are "TOO LOW FOR THE GYRO TO INITIATE SELF CHECK" Return these values to +100% and -100% and you'll be able to enter the "SELF CHECK" that is required to finish setting up the gyro.

    Channel 9 (Gain) and channel 10 (Stabilization) cannot be reassigned. That makes pins 9 and 10 on the receiver "unusable" That's not acceptable ! The final calibration of the gyro, to find it's level position, according to your instructions, does not work on the SR10PRO. Your "Oh Crap" function, also does not work on this receiver.

      Hi Frank. You must have something setup incorrectly. I’ve just gone through the process and it all works. Channel 9 is gain. Pins 9 and 10 can be re-assigned. The Oh crap function (channel 12) works fine too.

    this is all out dated. 1- self check has changed and is different. 2- if you upgrade your rx firmware the Sxr channels are 13, 14 and 16 instead of 9, 10 and 12

    • @MrD
      @MrD  Рік тому

      Not quite. The SxR receivers (the subject of this video) still use the self check switch and channels 9-12. They don’t have updated firmware.
      The Archer SRx receivers have newer firmware. So the self check is now done in the old SxR Tool. Not via a switch. But, the channels for stabilisation functions are still 9-12.
      The new Archer Plus SRx receivers have the new firmware and new tool (see my video on setting up the SRx LUA Tool). So they use the LUA tool to self check and the stabilisation functions are on channels 13-16. ua-cam.com/video/gzc1VwEPfCE/v-deo.html
