- Today we take a look at a little rifle that we totally overlooked when we first began our Cometa reviews, the humble little 220. Today we'll see just how much of a mistake that was as the 220 is an absolute little peach of a thing!

Dear Dan, congratulations for another excellent review! I love airguns and especially the "springers". In order to add some more info to this review, i would like to share with you and all the friends in here, my experience with the Cometa 220 Compact. Being the owner of a pre-Gamo, English made BSA Supersport and some Weihrauch spring rifles (30S, 50S, 95, 77, 80), i decided to acquire the gun you review, back in July 2020. Owning a fully equipped workshop and being an engineer, i'm skilful enough to tune almost everything around the house myself. So, after buying the gun (149 Euros in Greece) and testing it for a week, i found out that it was very pleasant to carry around all day, shot accurately and the open sights were a charm to use and it was also very quiet to shoot due to the beefy silencer, which also served as a very effective muzzle weight to eliminate any kind of muzzle flipping. Apart from all the nice characteristics, two were the biggest issues with the gun; the quite heavy, crippy trigger and the internal roughness and overlubrication of the whole construction which led to buzzing and excessive dieseling (Weihrauch style twanging, buzzing and smoking but at a fraction of weight and half the cost). I also have to point out that the forestock is extremely thin, especially at the point where the front screws get into the wood to grab the tube's forend. The rubber buttpad is very soft and quickly starts developing some serious peeling and the fiber-made post on the silencer is so vulnerable that, on my gun, it broke-off by the time the 220 accidentally slipped down the wall of the workshop it was leaning against and hit the floor quite gently! It didn't even slam against the floor, it just slipped the wall sideways. It's a shame Cometa has it there standind proud, with no hood to protect it! After firing a couple of 500 piece tins of pellets, i finished with breaking-in and testing and went on tuning the little buzzer. At its stock form, the gun produced from 7.6 to 8.3 foot pounds of energy with a plethora of (electronically weighted) .177 pellets from 7.44 grain H&N Econ II and 8.04 grain CP Lites to 8.46 grain JSB Exacts. I stripped the Cometa to the bits, honed the internal of the cylinder, opened the transfer port from 2.9mm up to 3.2mm and polished it inside (i do this to all my .177 guns to gain smoothness and power). I used the lathe to turn tight fitting 4000 grit polished delrin guide and tophat and replaced the oem spring with a cut down to 25 coils and properly finished and polished HW50S OEM spring. I also turned the piston on the lathe to add delrin straps around it ( for buttoning purposes). I then dismantled the trigger, cut two coils off its spring, tested it for strength in order to keep everything safe, polished the whole thing where i should and put it back altogether. Finally, i used epoxy and heat for putting back together the post on the silencer and machined a tubular protector for it. Out i went the next day for testing again. Oh boy, what a gem this previously uncut diamond was turned to! 9.3 ftlbs of energy with a PCP-like "ping" shooting sound instead of the initial buzzing. I put on a Hawke Vantage 2-7x32 AO and the gun became a 0.4 inch 35 yard tack-driver!!! The most precise pellet was CP Lite (this pellet works THE absolute best with all my rifles). The best shot i ever made with the little Cometa was against a collared dove sitting on an elm tree at a laser-metered 61 yards. The poor bird got it on the middle of the chest and dropped like a stone! The party with the little Spanish friend went on well for four and a half months. Suddenly, the safety tongue cracked with a barely audible "tok" sound at about shot 4.5K. Greek importer had no replacement part and being too lazy at the time to machine one, Chambers and the mail offices of UK and Greece did the trick for me and up and sound was the thing again after 8 days of inactivity. Another week passed by and the "Corona restrictions" kept me on constant holidays at my countryside house! I had put most of my guns away and shot the lightweight marvel almost exclusively, out in the surrounding fields. And that was when the s**t hit the fan!!! On a typical, glorious, sunny, Greek, late November morning, i spotted a flock of starlings landing on some nearby elm trees. I spilled half of my freshly made cup of coffee on the veranda table, i ran inside the house, grabbed the Cometa and some pellets and passing like a sprinter beside my laughing wife, i was out again and ready for action. I broke the gun open to put a pellet in the barrel and by the time i pushed it up gently to close the breech, off went the trigger (with automatic safety on) and the gun shot to the ground (fortunately). That was close i thought and then i noticed that the stock had a knife-cut like horizontal split right at the pistol grip. Now that i knew that there was a serious problem and my stock was already broken, i tried to replicate the whole thing. I managed to do it every three or four efforts. I turned the gun to pieces and saw that the sear had no much "meat" left and the piston slot where it engaged to, was very worn. I had shot about 5.5K pellets through the gun when it broke down. I forgot to mention that prior to tuning the gun, in order not to overstress the design, i had tested the mod spring i put in on a suitable press-test device and it was about 8% weaker than the Cometa's OEM mainspring and also softer but, quicker and much better suiting the piston. After checking out with the seller, he told me that these little spanish marvels are nowhere near as tough as Weihrauchs are. In fact he told me that they are prone to trigger wear and piston failure after 4-5K shots. I thought that, this was a very short lifespan for a modern, steel airgun part and didn't bother to repair the gun. It's still in parts in its card box. To cut a long story short, the little Spanyard is a stunner to look at and a delight to shoot when tuned properly but, and that's a big BUT, it's very delicate and won't stand the test of time easily; and i'm not the usual, casual, harsh airgunner. I treat all my guns like little babies.

The 220's are fantastic little rifles, in regards to trigger wear etc we haven't noticed any of that or had any complaints since we've been stocking them. In regards to the trigger Cometa has listened to our feedback and the Fenix platform will hopefully be receiving metal units very soon!

Nice one, I love very short full power rifles, and way back when I had a Trakker side lever. I couldn't get a Cometa and ended up with an SMK Victory CO2 .177 which I use with the pistol barrel and shoulder stock for cans and an aftermarket spring and rifle barrel for hunting. My mates are falling about themselves because I'm getting the rifle barrel chopped and recrowned, and getting an adapter for a HW silencer, all this for a £165 gun - which I love, and think it's so good you should review it - I can lend you my spare.
Hello Dan. this gun, if we call that a gun , is reminding me to my very first air gun. A Haenel Mod. 300 from Suhl, East Germany. As always it was a gift from my dad at my I guess 7th birthday. I`v been looking for that gun and couldn`t find it in good shape . My gun was from I think 1963- 68 and had no " F " sign for 7,5 Joule max, like the newer ones in Germany have . My`n does "kill" a champain bottle at 50 meters With wadcutters ! And we talking about a .177 cal. I think it has 10 fpe at least . If anyhow get hands on a such gun in a good shape take the chance !!!!!!

The 220 is such a cracking little rifle. We've actually got a customer that states that it outshoots his venom tuned HW95!!

Dan, great review. Thanks. I am a Canadian fan, and have two of these little gems, one in 177, its twin in 22. I agree, for the price, a 220 is tough to beat. I remove the trigger adjusting screw, and find mine are a little pellet fussy, but somewhat more-so in point of impact change than groups expanding. Love the size and weight, very handy.

@@bigdansairguns83 Hi Dan ! Great to hear from you, hope its getting Spring-ish in the UK, here in central B.C. we are still in late-winter mode. my little 220's have shown they don't mind superdomes at all, nor the JSB. The Crosman, not surprisingly, seem not too good,,and I have some Rifle brand
stuff that is very budget, and not much use past 15 or so yards. Compared to a HW50 they feels as smooth as a gas ram.

Hi Reg, fellow Canadian Cometa owner,,I have a 220 in 177 and also in 22. Prefer the 220 to the 300 just for the trigger,,find the heavy trigger and heavy buzz made the 300 a big let-down. Not a Weirhauch, in that i also have a pair of HW50's, one in 177, one in 22. And yes the Cometa is fun, solid, and quite smooth for a steel spring powerplant. I agree the 220 safety is the best. Also, the 220 has trigger adjustment, i just remove the adjustment screw altogether, which gives the 220 a better trigger than the 300 trigger by a mile. Great value for the money.

It doesn’t matter to me if it’s FAC or sub 12 power…I truly wish that other manufacturers would step up to the technical challenge that Gamo put on their plate with a multi shot magazine platform. After using the near flawless system I no longer want to single load a tiny pellet with old fingers. Imagine a 97K with a mag!💦❤️🤷♂️💯 Honestly with CNC mills and lathes plugging if in an SD card to get it done other than a material handler and parts changer…this feature should be standard. These manufacturers need to step up their game or be left behind. Great gun but in the Stone Age really with technical advancements.

Yes and no is my opinion on that. In the little 220's defence it's more than likely on average a more accurate rifle than the Gamo simply due to the fact you're loading directly into the breech instead of relying on it to be shot from the magazine. Due to this I can imagine that hunters will still favour the traditional break barrel over a magazine fed break barrel.
That being said what I do agree on is magazine technology being the future but more on underlever rifles than break barrels, this eliminates one area of potential inconsistent accuracy results (barrel lockup) and so as long as it's a good mag you should still have fixed barrel accuracy. We did a review on an old BSA Goldstar a while back which used a mag fed underlever design and that was a wonderful rifle. As you've said imagine a HW97 with a mag! What a thing that would be.

Hi Dan, great show and farm buckets full of enthousiasm. People who have opened Cometa springers find enough grease inside to lube that big tractor next to you in previous tubes. Naturally this helps them to behave quietly in the beginning. I hope this stays for a long time. I do wonder how this load of grease will stand up against drying and solidifying over time ? Do you dare to take a look inside and sacrifice some warranty ?

That might be the case abroad however I've actually spoken to A-S-I who imports them here and he specified that they're not to twang over here. Many who have stripped our models say if anything they're a bit dry.
I do wonder if they don't use much grease on the UK spec rifles as when we clean the barrels they're usually fairly clean.
The 220's do have some slight twang as you might be able to hear in the video but the Fenix/Fusion actions are usually just a "thud" during the shot cycle. Lovely rifles to shoot it must be said.

Is the barrel threaded 1/2 UNF so the silencer can be removed? Maybe it is bonded in place to prevent the foresight moving ?

Is the silencer on the gun removable at all (to uprade) - will the .22 be nearer to a full power (sub 12lb) - This gun seems to be ticking all my boxes -light & QUIET

Which Cometa would you buy for yourself?
Probably one of the reasons there was so little kick , low power will do that , if it was shooting at 11.5 with that little kick i would have been well impressed, nice rifle, not for me though, good video as usual, 😁👍

Possibly, but that being said if you compare that to the Remington Express Compact we reviewed that was also around 9ft-lbs and kicked quite a bit more, I'd also wager it was heavier.
Great little gun the 220 though, the .22's are usually more powerful and for science's sake I'll get one of those on camera and do a recoil test.

I had the 300s compact with this exact silencer it is really good and muted the muzzle better than the weihrauch 95ks silencer.
I did go to buy one of these compact 220s recently but £220 is the price of a weihrauch hw30s the resale value is nothing compared to the weihrauch.
I ended up buying a bsa supersport mk1 .177 in immaculate condition for £150 with scope and bag.
Already been in and reduced the power to 9.3 ftlb shoot's beautifully.
Great review but over priced I think ASI need to speak to Cometa and get the price down they've got a bit carried away with us leaving the EU even with the 20% levi on expo/inpo it should have only been £179 as they were selling in McAvoy's for £147 I could privately import one for less than £179 so clearly ASI have had a go at the price too.
Hatsan and Gamo prices are far friendlier and if you do your research some of the rifles are a lot better than people think.
Hatsans 60s/55s are very good with their quattro triggers and the Gamo whisper sting is basically a bsa comet with the cold forged barrel.
Should cometa really be charging the same for a basic fusion as weihrauch do for a 99s???
Much as I like the Cometa's I can't see a market for them at their current price point.
Hi Steve. It is unfortunate that prices are going up but sadly this is the same with all brands with HW and especially Air Arms prices going up nearly £200 per model.
In regards to the Fusion vs the 99s as much as I love the 99s I'd say the Fusion is the superior rifle if I'm honest. Trigger isn't on the same level as the Rekord but they're far more tame to shoot, less twangy, arguably better/on par barrel and a lifetime warranty if purchased through us or any other Cometa dealer who deals with A-S-I compared to 1 year with Weihrauch on a rifle that has a spotty past to be honest. Again not knocking the 99s I love them and the HW57 is still my favourite underlever rifle but they don't have the best reputation for longevity.
I would not call it a masterpiece. Mine was full of grease and was dieseling, the piston head was full of grease. Finish of the cocking link was terrible folded metal and rusted in the box 🤨 After a good clean and relube it behaved better. Its main selling point is the price, good barrel and safety catch system. The trigger is basic, the lock system and trigger unit look like they will not last decades of shooting. I would go for well cared of 2nd hand HW30/50 (99). I love your reviews and humor, keep up the good work 😁
Why oh why oh why, do they stick a right hand bias on these stocks and put off left handed customers. It makes no sense at all. Dark Ages. Nice gun, shame about the stock. ATB MMMD
Hey MMMD. Although the 220 can be shot by left handed shooters without a problem I do agree that the left handed market gets a bad rap. Alternatively the Fenix rifles all have ambidextrous stocks however.

I have to agree, basic traditional style stocks like this should all be made ambidextrous these days, there's really no excuse. If a gun is offered with a right hand bias stock then a left handed version should also be available.
My 177 220 seems to have a little more kick than , the one you have there .
And mine DOSNT have the silencer on on it . That might be due to being sold in Western Australia . The most pathetic state of all the Australian State’s . Did you know that we are not allowed to own Toy gelblaster guns in Western Australia 🤷. $5000 dollars fine for having one 🤦🏻♀️ . You also 👉 CANNOT Have - any automatic - or - semiautomatic firearms .. anyway . Thanks for the review , I enjoy my pellet gun . On average I’ll hit golf balls at 25 meters 8 out of 10 times … Most of the time I manage to hit the rat’s running across the roof of the chicken coop It’s just a grate little All round Tool.
Decades ago - My father had to hand in his Old 2 piece Browning 22 rifle because it was a semiautomatic 🤦🏻♀️
