we have sadly lost the engineers of the 30`s 40`s with vision and desire to create more power and compete with the world well done lads keep the old beast breathing
The Veyron is a spectacular piece of modern engineering. Brutus is a one off by a rich guy who wanted an aircraft engine in his wheels! The faults don't reside in the engine, but in the application. That mighty old lion was designed to turn a propellor by direct drive, not have its gigantic forces put through a clutch & skinny tyred 2 wheel drive! lol
wow! but that's death on wheels! cotter link chain drive! it's one thing to want a classic styled racer, but that's truly a ticking time bomb! what a rush!
i have bin in this car. for a vieuw years on row we visit the sinsheim museum on inviting from herman layer. the museum director, and i tell you.. brutus is really a beast and in stands in the museum when there is a engineer you could ask a employee of the museum to start the engine. yes they start the engine in the museum!!!! just a little bit more background information, this is a present from the engineers and friends for herman when he got 50 years old!
I love the concept. But putting those skinny tires on and effectively no brakes? What were they thinking? There has to be wider tires of the same style around, and I don't see why a pair of big brake drums up front would ruin anything. Then it would at least be drivable...
Impressive machine.. is this a real museum peice or a new scratch built car?? If it is new, they should use a better drivetrain setup... those chain drives are not so great. Mabye use the drivline from a big truck.. that would handle the torque... very cool machine though... I would like to just be near it to hear it run!!!
Somebody needs to put this engine in a modern frame, with radial tires, disc brakes, and suspension. Something like a 3/4 ton truck frame with modified suspension would be great. I want to see this thing use some of its power!
This car is a ghost from the past. A past when men were men & had balls of steel. You would just love to get a tanker of Avgas and go playing on the nearest Autobahn at 2am.
@purpleGoAhead Good explanation. Here in the UK, we have a steam traction engine called Boadicea. She is rated @ 10 nominal horsepower, an arbitrary comparison to actual draught horses. Working compound, her 2 cylinders generate 4335 ft/lbs of torque. ( 165 bhp @ 200 rpm) Working simple, with full boiler pressure fed to the 12 inch bore low pressure cylinder as well, she makes 11877 ft/lbs!! ( 452 bhp @ 200 rpm!!) Although the boiler can only sustain that for a short time.
WTCHME, See if this might impress you. The Veyron has 4 turbochargers to produce its 981 bhp (1001 ps) @ 6000 rpm, & 922 lbs/ft of torque. This monster is naturally aspirated to make 750 bhp @ 1700 rpm, & 2319 lbs/ft of torque. 2.5 times that of the Veyron. The Veyron has to rev 3.5 times faster to add its 231 bhp advantage, but we must expect some technical progress in the 80 years that separate them!
Yes, "only" 750 PS, but because it makes that power at such a low speed, the torque should be somewhere in the neighborhood of 2000-2500 Ft-lbs. That means the BMEP isn't too great for today's standards, but it was great for back then, about 150 BMEP.
@purpleGoAhead Since you quoted in Nm's, the 2 figures are 5873 Nm & 16092 Nm respectively. The simple working figure is 5.12 times the torque of this 47 litre aircraft engine! & from 2 cylinders of 7 1/4 & 12 inch bore!! Many people misunderstand the nature of torque, which is the real strength of an engine. Power is just work rate in a specific time period, & as you say, is more rpm related.
this thing could have 1 horsepower and still out shine most modern day cars, the torque out of it must be tremendous, it's amazing the gearbox and shafts (and pathetic chain :p ) can take it. fine piece of engineering though
How do you go about keeping a 47 liter engine from over heating? In a airplane it had no problem staying cool with a large amount of constant air being blow on to it at all times. A fan small enough to fit inside the bonnet could not sufficiently blow enough air onto the engine if it was direct drive. The engine rpms are too slow. Anyone care to explain how it stays cool?
@ produKtNZ, the commentator says "The tank is nearly full but he needs more than 1 litre per 1km! "...thats so many like the Bugatti Veyron needs at Topspeed, 407 km/h thats a monster of an engine, old good technic und nice sound, thank you BMW
You don't have near the cooling demands on a plane. Constant rpm, cold temperatures, and a giant fan blowing air across it constantly. You put a much higher demand on the cooling system when it's in a car. Plus, you never really do snap-throttle on a plane.
Portuguese is the official language of Brazil. It is spoken by nearly the entire population and is virtually the only language used in newspapers, radio, television, and for all business and administrative purposes. Google it.
Wow! Everything about this screams "old school", from the wood frame, to the leaf spring suspension and, best of all, chain final drive!
A beautiful machine, man.
Literally an engine with wheels :-)
I love the old school powerhouses.
"Da wussten wix dass er so viel Hubraum hat, auch dass er so viel leistung hat "
:-D
Liebe diese "Entschuldigung" ;)
This, ladies and gentlemen, is a hot rod :-)
Holy fuck, that thing is badass! I would love to drive that thing!
the exposed valvetrain on that car is a work of art. though the car itself is a little subtle for my taste... lol
Imagine that starting sound every moring... Love it!
A traditional chain-drive race car with an engine larger than what was ever used in such a vehicle. Yeah, it's a true monster.
It's so old it's even chain-driven instead of with a normal driveshaft lay-out! : )
we have sadly lost the engineers of the 30`s 40`s with vision and desire to create more power and compete with the world well done lads keep the old beast breathing
Love the sound when it starts! Germans don't need helmets, they've got balls!
I would love to see a modern-day Brutus

Actually, you just defined the american defense contractor way.
As automotive design goes, Brutus is a sledgehammer.
Fantastic car! A real acheivement in engineering!
i have bin in this car.

Wow that's quite a car. Driving it must be like strapping yourself to a rocket!
Impressive machine.. is this a real museum peice or a new scratch built car?? If it is new, they should use a better drivetrain setup... those chain drives are not so great. Mabye use the drivline from a big truck.. that would handle the torque... very cool machine though... I would like to just be near it to hear it run!!!
beautiful BMW engine
big engine you got there
and big steering wheel too
and that chain drive sounds awsome!!!
Sounds like a Spitfire starting up. Massive aircraft engine, chain-drive, puny brakes, skinny tires. What could possibly go wrong?
The frame is from a 1906 NYC fire engine and it has no breaks.
Someone once said: "there's no replacement for displacement"
aaahyy missed that song!! :) nice pics
Holy shit! This is awesome :)
Somebody needs to put this engine in a modern frame, with radial tires, disc brakes, and suspension. Something like a 3/4 ton truck frame with modified suspension would be great. I want to see this thing use some of its power!
Fred Flintstone should pilot this thing. A true example of 500+brontopower. What I wouldn't give to drive it!
I guess he would give the same answer as people who are asked why they climb Everest; 'Because it's there!'. lol
nice, i got a pair of those goggles. all i need now is the car to match lol
Shit that looks dangerous. I like the stuka dive bomber sounding starter.
this is not a car,it is an artefact from hell
Jesus that's awesome, it's like a freakin' freight train
is it standing in sinsheim technik museum?
when you have been there?
guess it was not so long ago..?
Devil's car! What's the origin of that engine? What's the torque? As I understand there is no gearbox, right?
Looks like a monster from a scary movie!!!
That is absoloutely heroic! Anyone who naffly refers to there own car as 'the beast' should see this and hang there head in shame!
It's actually quite impressive that the fuel consumption is "just" 1 litre per a kilometre or 2.4 miles per gallon.
"forget full trottle!"
This car is a ghost from the past. A past when men were men & had balls of steel.

I like the starter sound... the rest of the Brutus seems to be kinda wortless
They need to move to some kind of Saltlake with Miles of free space to really fire that monster off his limits!
now thats an engine WOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Its a cool museum if you can get there to see it.
I want to drive it too! Is it my turn yet?

Germans always make the best stuff.
That may be the case with the horsepower but i'm pretty sure that makes a whole lot of torque...
Woo!!! Go BMW, Konig der Motoren.
lol, starts like a star wars episode 1 pod racer xD
The germans were smart, they used the car races to develop sick engines, which they then put in their fighter aircraft, for example the me109.

how fast would it go if it could actually handle high speeds?
Chain driven wheels? They stopped using that before this engine was designed!
Who builds a car with all that power and 3" tyres?
And as for the rear-wheel-only brakes...
how fast does it go then as I am thinking I can take that on my 90cc vespa
3:44 THIS IS SPARTA!!!!
this thing could have 1 horsepower and still out shine most modern day cars, the torque out of it must be tremendous, it's amazing the gearbox and shafts (and pathetic chain :p ) can take it. fine piece of engineering though
how is the name of the song at the start of the video?
wie heißt das lied am anfang des videos?
I'd love to have one to go shopping :D

Germany's version of Jay Leno's Tank Car!
Damn.... It's all motor and hood.
Was this behemoth water cooled?
I like how practical it is .. .

am diggin those tires!
omfg listen to it 3:13 talk about awakening the monster inside im in love
is it a brazilian or german video? the language is the same
@wfw5607 750 bhp @ 1700 rpm means the engine generates 2319 ft/lbs of torque.
GODDAMN!, 700+ horses at 1700RPM!!!
looks like a train engine or somethin, sick though.
holly crap!a coffin with weels!
Handles about as good as my house.
750PS, ok. And about the tork?
you would have to be mad to race one but it would be fun
that thing probably gets no traction with those tiny little tires.
amazing power machine
uszlachetniacze - testy i opinie
Its from Korn. But i cant remember the name of the song..
looks like it could have rocket launchers and machine guns, and a jetpak located in the boot!
Somebody SOmeone! nice one on the msic choice wasnt epecting that lol
@bubbalove69 Classic rally cars had no 47 litre airplane engines either. :)
looks like a fast tractor
what're the torque figures?
@ produKtNZ, the commentator says "The tank is nearly full but he needs more than 1 litre per 1km! "...thats so many like the Bugatti Veyron needs at Topspeed, 407 km/h
thats a monster of an engine, old good technic und nice sound, thank you BMW
I would learn to cuss in German just to drive this BMW
I don't really get why they used such narrow tyres.
Was ist that's freakin awesome auf Dutch? Forgive my spelling I'm new to the German language
This is the scarriest "car" I've ever seen...

wat een geil ding, ik haar ook geern so een motor in mien clio xD
@CaptainLibertarian heck at 0:44,the guy even looks a bit like jay leno!!
What is the song in the beginning?
