  • In this video I try to make a knife from a copper bar this knife is quite hard but no where near as hard as normal steel so it is made for display purposes and cause I've not seen anyone else try it so why not. I wasn't happy with the final look and that's why I then decided to hammer and blacken it to try give it a bit more of an authentic old look.
    Brass bar blade 5mmx50mmx300mm
    Maple burl scales
    Red washing up bowl liners
    Brass pins.

    to get a longer lasting and harder edge, think about peening that cutting edge. Like a scythe. It will pull a little material out making it thinner and harder. Then run a stone over it once or twice to fine tune the edge, and you will be good to go.

      It will harder if you hammer it.

    Very nice. I’ve never seen a copper knife unless you consider a copper letter opener shaped like a sword as a knife. I love copper and silver. There’s something so warm about both metals.

      @@DiesInEveryFilm thank you for the video! I have some stock copper bars similar to that! When the power company makes repairs, keep your eyes open. I let the stuff sit for over a week and then grabbed it! To the average person it looked like steel junk!

      Sure! Next, you should try making a dagger or something. Maybe use brass or bronze though, 'cause they're stronger than copper. But I seriously like the old-timey/primitive/EDC vibe I get from that knife.

    Really beautiful! What oil is that you soaked the handle in and for how long? Handle looked nice and shiny at the end did you put something on it after whatever was in the jar? Really like how it turned out, only thing I would change would be the blackener I think it detracted from the over al look of the knife. I would maybe move dimpleing process with the ball pin hammer to before the sharpening sand down or somewhere in the middle of all that and also a bit less black if possible, maybe the sanding would accomplish this. Copper tones naturally over time so maybe not needed at all? Idk just a few novice ideas. Nice knife. Thanks for sharing.

    • @DiesInEveryFilm
      @DiesInEveryFilm  5 років тому

      It's boiled linseed oil soaked for 24hrsand left to dry 3x then polish. I dimpled and blackened for a bit of contrast I don't like it all to just blend into one it doesn't look good to me. Copper does patina over time but it takes years for it to happen so not worth the wait

    • @DiesInEveryFilm

    Really cool concept man I really dig the look. I think copper gets hard if you heat or work harden it, which makes me wonder if it will hold an edge better. I don't expect it to get as sharp as steel but curious to see if work hardening it will make sharper. Nice job!

    The knife looks nice but as a newb to knife making videos I am wondering what are the pros and cons when using copper? To date, this is the first vid I have seen where the maker is using copper... My first instinct is that this knife will not be as strong as a steel knife and will not hold an edge very well... Am I wrong?

    • @DiesInEveryFilm
      @DiesInEveryFilm  5 років тому

      It's just a bit of fun but copper can hold an edge lots of old knives and weapons were made from copper it's work hardened unlike carbon steels. But obviously it wouldn't last as long as carbon steel knives

    By the by, nice tattoos! So… I like the look of copper, but I wouldn’t use it to make a knife. It’s soft and unreliable, I’d use Aluminum Bronze for that. But I like how it turned out, might not be practical, but it is pretty

      It will definitely cut more than butter it's sharp and not that soft as I did work harden it a bit 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

      Diesineveryfilm Customs oh good ! Is the edge retention close to some basic steels like 440A , now ?

  • @bobbertbobby3975
    @bobbertbobby3975 6 років тому

    perhaps some sorta work hardening on the edge would get it to hold a better edge sharpness?
    you could work it like a scythe maybe?

    • @DiesInEveryFilm
      @DiesInEveryFilm  6 років тому +1

      Yeh I have been looking into work hardening the thing is it gets hard but there's a thin line between hard and it just crumbling so cause I'm not too sure I need to practice more and do another build once I know the metal better 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

    What grit is on the sander for sharpening the knife, and shaping the handle?

    • @DiesInEveryFilm
      @DiesInEveryFilm  5 років тому

      It's very difficult to explain cause I use lots of different grits getting higher and higher till I get 1000 then I sharpen and similar with the wood.

    I love this build. Just watched it again with the wife to show her your cool craftsmanship. Great stuff! I was curious though, do you think this would be sharper if you peened it like a sythe?

    • @DiesInEveryFilm
      @DiesInEveryFilm  6 років тому +1

      Haha that's awesome man hope she liked it. Yes it can be work hardened and I did do it a little bit but need to practice it before I try again as there's a fine line between hardening and it crumbling 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

    Looks sick man. You could’ve gotten the edge harder and sharper by work hardening though, since you can’t quench it like steel alloys

  • @chaosvolt

    While not really important for a display knife, it'd definitely worth it to toy around with hammering the final edge to shape to take advantage of work hardening.

      Could silver solder it but wouldn't hold up and hard to heat treat without oxy/acet. I looked into it haha 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
