I too feel it is underrated by the fanbase, indeed, before delving deeply into this comparison and extensive listening session, I felt some of it might be a little weak. My appreciation for “For Absent Friends”, and the entirety of side two went up immeasurably during these sessions. I'd say it is on the level of Foxtrot, which I'd always considered to be a step up.
Agreed 100%. All four albums by the "classic" lineup are perfect to my ears. I even think the mellower tracks work great. You need a little bit of a rest in between The Musical Box and The Return Of The Giant Hogweed. Those tracks are intense!
@@JWD1992 Its a high quality “intermission!” Hearing Phil sing solo was very nice and the song is so pretty. I much prefer it to the other Phil solo More Fool Me.
I am going to have to ask for this for Christmas. I normally do not like breaking up sides, but this recording has such wild dynamics that I need to hear them on full display at 45 rpm.
A very nice present! I think in this case at least, the side breaks work out ok. I'm sure you'll love it if you are familiar with the record. I had a new appreciation for it, and that's what its all about!!
I finally decided to succumb to getting the Genesis AP albums. They're my favourite band of all time since I first discovered them with Seconds Out in 1979/80! I've been massively disappointed with all of the vinyl reissues in the last 10-15 years. Especially Nursery Cryme. So I took the plunge and ordered one of the limited 200 numbered copies! I will now endeavour to get the others like Selling England and the Lamb before hopefully getting my hands on my favourite of theirs... A Trick of the Tail in December. Thanks for your great detailed reviews. They're much appreciated 😊
I think Selling England By The Pound is my favorite, but I'm like a kid at Christmas waiting for Trick of the Tail. I also got into them right before Seconds Out and heard a lot of Trick played live on two occasions. Its going to be incredible.
Great review, Scott! I too am very satisfied with this new 45! I am really excited about Foxtrot too, but it looks like they have replaced it with Trick of the Tail for their December 13 Atlantic 75 release.
Thank you so much. I too am excited for Foxtrot, but I think Trick of the Tail is going to be stunning. It has the potential to be the best sounding of the series. Can't wait to hear Entangled. Should be magical.
Absolutely. This is one of the great aspects of this pressing. Yet the character of the UK is here as well. It is the best of all worlds. Glad you're loving it!
I just listened to my new 45RPM Nursery Crime and agree that it is now the definitive version. Phil and Peter's vocals are blended perfectly. I am now looking forward to Trick of the Tail...especially Dance on the Volcano.😊
I am dying to hear Trick of the Tail. I predict it is going to me the crown jewel of the series. I love it so much I may have to get a backup! We’ll see but based on this, we’re in for a real treat!
I was looking forward to your review of this. I agree with everything you said. This record was such a joy to listen to. Another home run! Thanks for the review.
Thanks, Scott, for another great video. I could never get a copy of the Classic release, and my other pressings were subpar. Out of all the Atlantic 75 Genesis releases, this album had the most to gain in sonic quality. Needless to say, I was very excited to get this. The separation of instruments on the aggressive busier tracks Musical Box, Hogweed, and Salmacis is jaw-dropping. Steve's guitar is easily discernable from Tony's parts and Mike's bass has way more clarity and depth. I also found myself really enjoying the rest of the deep cuts and have a new appreciation for them. Back to Hogweed, Mike's over-driven bass and Steve's chunky almost metal-like guitar had me pumping my fist. I played Hogweed three times in a row just so I could break down each instrument. Tony's keyboards never sounded so full and textured plus the channel separation is much wider. I've never liked how far back in the mix Phil's drums are on this record but at least now they are super clear. I agree that the textured "painting-like" cover art is beautiful and the entire packaging is perfect. Overall I, have a new appreciation for this record and I think I'm moving it up in my rankings. Next up is the December release of Trick of the Tail. This one will be interesting because the 2" analog master tape was not available so they are using a 1/4" EQ'd tape. I'm not sure what that means but I've always loved my MFSL copy and I'm excited to see what they can do with it. Thanks for reading!
Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this release. You've brought out many great points, and I agree completely. The record has risen I'm ny estimation too where I completely enjoy every track. What a creative record. I'm sure Trick of the Tail is going to be SPECTACULAR! The material is so good and thd sound has always been great too. My MFSL is a treasured record but I bet they will beat it, copy tape or not.
Love your appreciation of Genesis' wonderful dynamics. I have never liked 'For Absent Friends' because Phil sounded so tentative but recently heard a better recording and it sounded much better. So I am excited to hear how much better it sounds on the new recording release. 'Hogweed' lyrics are great and historically accurate! Love 'Seven Stones' so I look forward to it also. Recently saw the restored performance of the Midnight Special. Crazy good. Yes, stunning! I like the addition of the photos in your video. 'Nursery Cryme' has such a raw character, it is a special album.
Thank you so much for watching and leaving such a great comment! I never really thought much about For Absent Friends either. The Classic and AP 45 gave me a new appreciation of that song. Its a perfect “intermission” and a chance to hear Phil’s first solo vocal. I prefer it to More Fool Me on Sellung England. I bet you'll like it on the 45.
I always say that Selling England is my favourite Genesis album but whenever I play this one I have to admit it’s close, very close. Great video as usual, Scott.
Hi Robert, Ive always said the same. selling England for the PG era and Trick for the Collins era. However this has taken a step up in my rankings too. Its on the level of Foxtrot for sure.
Interesting & thoughtful review! I've never heard a great version of this (I had the UK Charisma LP & the US Atlantic CD). They always sounded murky & distant. I love the remixed CD from 2008 though.
I have heard a couple of the remixes and I just can't enjoy them due to the harsh mastering. Maybe this one is better as you say, but I think if you prefer the Nick Davis mixes in general, you might not appreciate the original mix on this one, even though I feel it sounds splendid on the 45.
I received my copy of Nursery Cryme today and I've played it through twice this evening. What can I say... it's stunning. The contrast between the gentle acoustic moments and the bombastic sections has never been more emphasised. There's a real power. Highlights for me are Hogweed verses, Seven Stones and the swells in Fountain of Salmacis. Great dynamics. It's a dense album in places when all the band are in full flow but this version never sounds cluttered or muddy. All the instruments are still nicely separated. The drums and bass in Hogweed for example. Such a tight rhythm track on that one.
Great comment! Some great details, thank you. I'm in agreement of course. Its a very impressive mastering of this creative and charming record. Now, onward to what I think will be the best of all - the beautiful Trick of the Tail!
@ThePressingMatters Thank you. It's certainly the best version of the album I've ever heard. It always suffered sonically in the loud parts but they've done a great job with it. And yes, I can't wait for Trick as well. It's my favourite Genesis album, just above Foxtrot. Before I take the next step and purchase The Lamb, what are your thoughts on that one?I Although these AP editions have been widely praised, i 've heard mixed reviews on The Lamb, some claiming it to be a disappointing listen with Peter's vocals sounding very 'recessed'. In fact, the only part in this new NC that surprised me a little was his vocal on the Now Now Now section. They seemed buried a little. I think this is perhaps because the 2008 remix hrought them forward on that part of Musical Box
@ Yes, the vocals on Musical Box aren't always perfect in the original mix, but I'll take it over the remix. The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway is a good sounding album, there is not much to criticize sonically. Although I'm glad to have it, I didn't think it was a huge advance over the Classic. Add in the price and having to flip so many times, with what is in my opinion some weak spots and its not as compelling as say Selling England which was a significant improvement. If you love the album, and don't own the Classic, you'll certainly love it. My review is here: Analogue Productions Atlantic 75 Series - Genesis The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway ua-cam.com/video/SCmpeyGD8mU/v-deo.html
Hi Tony! It's right up there with the first two, and I'm sure you will love rediscovering this album. Please let me know when you've heard it. Love to have your thoughts on it.
Great review of a fine album. Small point to many, I guess, but I'm glad you took the time to talk about the quality of the sleeve. There was a time when appreciating great cover art meant more than just focusing on a clever image, but also extended to the weight and texture of the paper/card stock, the printers ink, the quality of construction, the overall presentation. There was a world of difference between a UK Garrod and Lofthouse jacket and a cheap domestic unipack cover. That attention to detail is often overlooked and sorely lacking in reissues.
I have to say Chad and company have been very good with attention to these details. We’ll see if he can nail it with Deja Vu. That is quite an involved jacket design!
Scott, I don't know this particular album (yet), but those kinds of little details which give life to the performance, such as Peter's "parting of his lips" is one of those amazing things that you get when you get better systems. I do plan to check out the album. I'm a big fan of Gabriel 's, but have only within the last year listening to the older Genesis albums.
Hi Jeff, Early PG era Genesis is pretty interesting, and I'm sure you'll appreciate the record once you settle into it. The system keeps getting better and I'm enjoying the increase in sound quality. It makes doing these reviews all that much more pleasurable.
Thanks for your passionate review, and Genesis fans should be very happy to replace their worn out copies. Unfortunately none of the A75 series album re-releases so far has triggered my wallet or to let go any of my collection instead. Maybe one is yet to come so that I own at least one of them. Still in hope.
My pleasure! I am very pleased with the Genesis titles, and love covering albums that mean so much to me. Perhaps Trick Of The Tail, which is coming up next, will be the one that gets you! I appreciate your comment, and thank you for watching!
Great review as always Scott. My copy is scheduled for arrival today. Can’t wait to listen. I’m still on the fence about getting Foxtrot in this format. Struggling to get over or accept that Suppers Ready will be broken apart.
Thank you so much! Please return with your thoughts on the record. I hope you are as delighted as I was. I'll be doing a Foxtrot review, and personally wouldn't miss it. I'll let you know how I react to the split in Suppers Ready. I think they picked a good spot.
@ well Scott I’ve finally had a chance to listen to it, and must say it’s great. I don’t have any other physical copy to compare to, just streaming, so obviously this sounds better. I’m hearing things I’ve never noticed before. Really like it.
Thanks for all your efforts again Scott, much appreciated. I have the Atlantic 75 on order here in the UK but probably a couple of weeks away yet from reaching me. My only vinyl copy of this album is a UK re-issue on the Small Mad Hatter Label with matrix nos. A2/B2. I understand (& Discogs seems to confirm) that the original UK stampers were used for this pressing, but I have never been particularly enamoured with the sound. Played my Nick Davis re-issue SACD from the box set again today & whilst the instrument separation is better on the SACD, the bass & drums are overly powerful & become distracting. I am hoping therefore that the AP issue has far more clarity than my current vinyl copy but has better overall balance than the SACD. If the AP Atlantic 75s of SEBTP & TLLDOB are anything to by then I won’t be disappointed.
Thank you for watching and commenting! Based on my one experience with the Nick Davis remasters, I think you'll be very pleased to hear the original mix presented is such fidelity as a on the AP 45 You're in for a treat. While not as dramatic an improvement as Selling England it is nonetheless the best I’ve heard, and the Classic was hard to beat!
Great review, Scott! I am also very pleased with this new 45! I was very excited for Foxtrot also, but it seems A Trick of the Tail has replaced it for their December 13 Atlantic 75 release.
Thank you and thanks for sharing your thoughts on the new reissue. I am looking forward to Foxtrot but if they need more time to get it perfect, so be it! Maybe they have t decided exactly where to split Suporrs Ready :-) I'm not as concerned as some are about that, I'm sure it will be in the best possible spot and there are a couple of choices. In the meantime, Trick of the Tail is going to be an awesome Christmas present we can give to ourselves!
Another in-depth and thoughtful review, Scott. Even though I have/had absolutely zero interest in this Genesis album, I am very interested to learn more about your approach in reviewing different "pressings" and releases. I now have even more confidence in your past and present reviews after viewing this episode. Your review was far more helpful than the typical vinyl "shootout" as you also provided a strong and well resourced historical perspective which is probably due to your classical music background. Looking forward to watching more of your reviews regardless of the musical genre moving forward...Cheers!
Thanks! I’m glad you enjoyed it, and I feel especially happy that even though you might not be interested in every album I present, you're open to watching my presentation anyway! That's a big compliment!
@ThePressingMatters The more context that I can get as to the approach used in your reviews, the more informed my decisions.will be as I make future listening and purchasing decisions. Even though I am not interested in this very early version of Genesis, I did learn a lot about your overall approach especially as it pertains to the multiple editions of source material used for your sonic comparison(s). As a lifelong music collector and then audiophile as well as having worked in three (3) different record stores selling new and used LP's and CD's when I was in college, I am very familiar with all the different labels, pressings, etc. that you refer to. This last review did include detailed description (s) of the source material AND your equipment so that was helpful as well. As I disclosed in a previous post, I no longer have an analog front end (I sold my Linn LP-12 and thousands of LP's several years ago) as I have embraced immersive/surround as well as 2 channel audio through my OPPO UDP-205 universal player and Arcam AVR31 (amp/avr) and B&W 805's (speakers) spinning all silver & gold discs in every format (CD, DTS, DVD-AUDIO, Blu-ray, SACD'S, etc.). Although your reviews are vinyl centric, many of these releases are available in hi-rez, physical formats (Bookends by S&G on SACD for example) so your reviews are still relevant to me. Looking forward to your next review... cheers!
Thanks for the additional information. Yes, I think because I describe the music as well as sound, this would be helpful across all formats. I've been feeling the SACD bug lately. I might jump in. Would you say it's worth it to have physical discs or are you good with the quality of streaming?
@ThePressingMatters I have ALWAYS been a proponent of physical product(s) and as of 11-11-2024, I have not downloaded OR streamed any release. I will go to Amazon and listen to bits and pieces of albums to get an idea of the content /performance that I have read about, etc. but that's the extent of my experience with "streaming". As far as SACD's, MOFI seems to be the reissue label that is releasing them in conjunction with their vinyl counterpart (the 75th Atlantic Records releases released through Analog Productions has SACD counterparts as well) and a lot of jazz and classical (recent Blue Note & Tone Poet's , etc) from Japan. Rhino has been pretty successful with their QUADIO releases (Blu-ray's w/the original Quad and Stereo mixes remastered) and you are also seeing many of the deluxe box sets being released with separate hi-rez Blu-ray discs with Atmos mixes. I do really like your vinyl reviews especially those releases where you also have original pressings and audiophile reissues that you reference for sonic comparisons. Those are "priceless"!
Hi Scott. I noticed you mentioned that Faure Requiem on the Audiophilia channel and wondered if you’d played it yet. I’ve collected a good number of those Classics For Pleasure and for the most part they sound very good to me (I particularly like the Cluytens Beethoven symphonies set). I’d be interested in your thoughts when playing them on a much higher level system than I have 😊.
I was hoping to play it last night after the show but didn't get to it. I'll have a listen tonight. I remember it being quite good, but it should sound great on the new setup
These have all been great, but I am really disapointed that Wind and Wuthering will not get the Atlantic 75, 45 treatment. Thanks as always for great reviews!
I know, its poor judgement to not release Wind and Wuthering. My god it's perfect for this format. Maybe it will be among “the remaining four titles” if I get Chad’s ear, you can bet I will push for it.
I have a theory - which may or may not be the case - as to why they didn't include W&W ... They would have to change the running order. Something they haven't had to do on any other AP release. Eleventh Earl and One for the Vine wouldn't fit comfortably on one side of a 45rpm. So the split would have to be... Side 1 Eleventh Earl One for the Vine (pt1) Side 2 One for the Vine (pt2) Your Own Special Way Wot Gorilla? Not ideal. It's only a theory though. They could have changed the running order and moved YOSW and WG forward but that would feel odd.
@ I thought about this too and it's true, a very difficult decision to resequence the album, as it flows perfectly. Perhaps a separate release someday at 33 or on 2LP 33.
Thanks for the content. I still prefer the UK pink scroll as it is less flat on the high end, especially during The Musical Box. The highs just weren't there-there. It still sounds great, but it is different.
I'm sure its much better than the US Pink Scroll, maybe even better than the Uzk pressi g I had here. If it sounds better than the 45 in some ways, that's incredible! Hold on to it!
Sometimes I do post audio samples for download but I don't do them myself. My friend Oz does them and he's been out of town. I'll see if we can next time I see him.
The original UK Pink Scroll pressing sounds very close to the Classic. The Mad-hatter UK pressing is not in the same league as either, though not bad. I’d love to hear the AP though. This is my favorite Genesis album.
Thanks for your comments! Though I haven't heard the UK Pink Scroll, what you say seems to be what I experienced with the UK and the Classic. The Classic was a bit better than the IU/2U and the 45 better still in my opinion. Would you happen to know any matrix information for the UK Pink Scroll?
Great review. Not a fan of their pre-Duke stuff at all, but I can’t wait til AP Finally gets to the Genesis albums of my era. From Duke going forward. At this rate maybe they’ll come out in 2026 😂
I got my copy of the Atlantic double-45 'Nursery Cryme' that I'd pre-ordered. There's something weird with 'The Musical Box', where all of Peter's vocals before 'Old King Cole was a merry old soul...' are buried so deep in the mix that you wouldn't be able to hear the words clearly if you didn't already know them; totally wrong. I contacted Acoustic Sounds and they got back to me right away and said they would send me a replacement vinyl disc for that one; if your's sounded OK, there's hope. I'll see how that is....
I'm listening again. Do you have other, earlier copies? Or are you only familiar with the streaming versions which are remixes from 2008? In my experience with the other copies and this one, its a case of “it is what it is.” The vocals have always been wonky on the original mix. Some enhancement is possible with a remastering, but things can't be brought out in position like you could with a remix. I think this is why some like the remixes despite everything being loud without much nuance. This recording simply isn't the sonic marvel that SEBTP or TLLDOB. I'd class both this and Foxtrot in a lower tier sonically. Unfortunately I don't think a replacement will solve this issue for you unless you are hearing some issue other than the somewhat compromised original recording. However in my comparison, it came out, with the Classic, on top. As I mentioned to another post, this is one to focus on the sheer creativity of the music and arrangements and let go of critical listening. I think with repeated plays at optimum volume, you'll find you are admiring the music on a deeper level. If its a “no go” for you, you might actually prefer the remix. Pull up any streaming service to sample it. Hope this helps!
Thank you so much for your detailed response! I've known that album very well since I first got it in 1973 and have listened to it on vinyl and and on several CD mixes, and none of them had me alarmed and going 'What happened to the vocals on the first several verses?'. As I said, it's not that way on the whole song - from the 'Old King Cole was a merry old soul' part to the end, the vocals sound like they should. BTW, I saw Genesis on the Foxtrot tour in '73 when they played at my college gym in Rochester, NY. Got some great photos, too.
@@larsman9169 If you are hearing that much of a difference from your older copies of the same mix then there might be an issue with the pressing. Please let me know if it's any better. I will go back to my US and UK pressings to check for any differences.
@@ThePressingMatters Miami hmmm sounds nice - the ladyfriend I bought my house from lives in W. Palm now... that's pretty close. And we have friends in Orlando but have never been there. Tempting.
Scott if you haven't seen this film (16mm) at 1974 Paris concert it's really amazingly sharp and has beautiful color. ua-cam.com/video/8qMsr7jjQF0/v-deo.html
Sorry to say I was disappointed by this release. SEBTP was so perfect, i expected more of the same. The album is very dynamic, and there is more definition of instrumentation. I found Gabriel's vocals to be buried deep in the mix of Musical Box and Hogweed. First impression 😢
Thanks for your comment. I'm sorry you came away disappointed with Nursery Cryme. I don't think this recording has ever sounded as good as Selling England By The Pound. That recording is vastly superior, and it was splendid hearing it in its Atlantic 75 edition. I don't know if you had previous versions to compare, but if coming to it thinking it might sound as good as Selling England, I could see where you might be disappointed. They are two different things, naturally. Vocals are mixed oddly and there are other issues as well. I knew this going into it, but prefer the original mix to the remix. Among the various editions I auditioned, I do think this is the best of all I've heard. I don't know if you’ve heard the remix, but some prefer it as it does solve some of the issues with the vocals. However it comes at a price, and I mean a forward rather harsh sound across the record, with a flattening of dynamic range. It lost a lot of the nuance that makes the record special.
@ThePressingMatters i have a 1975 US re-release of Nursery Cryme for comparison. There is no question about the dynamics being improved upon. Some of Hackett's material bounces from speaker to speaker. Did not recall that in the earlier pressing. I have a lot of surface noise on this new release as well. I will need to go back and relisten to both. Your point about the quality of the original recordings of Nursery Cryme vs. SEBTP is well taken. Sometimes, it pays just to sit back and enjoy and not listen too critically. Thanks for all you do, Scott. I look forward to seeing your postings.
@fredlennon5937 I think that's the key here, to revel in the sheer creativity of the record and let go of any sonic comparisons to the later material. The record is a unique moment in time, one full of interesting writing and musicianship. They did not yet have the resources to labor over and produce a sonic gem like SEBTP, I do have to remind myself of this as I hear early records in general. Some of the greatest performances in Jazz, vocal, classical, and rock were just not always recorded that well, so I've learned to set my expectations accordingly. It really helps me to avoid an initial feeling of disappointment and enjoy those records on a deeper level.
I'd rate Nursery Cryme on the same level as Foxtrot , Selling England , etc . A deeply underrated beautiful album . Definitely one of their best .

@@ThePressingMatters Thanks for that info. I'll check out your Lamb review again.
I'm looking forward to getting Selling England next week.
@psychedelicbadger4092 That one is sure to impress you.
Excellent. Subscribed
Thank you Reynaldo!
Hi Scott I have this on order and can't wait for it to arrive in the UK . Have the other 2 AP releases 😁👍
Hi Jeff,
Early PG era Genesis is pretty interesting, and I'm sure you'll appreciate the record once you settle into it.
The system keeps getting better and I'm enjoying the increase in sound quality. It makes doing these reviews all that much more pleasurable.
Thanks Scott for the video. I haven't got mine yet in Canada but hope soon. Can't wait for Foxtrot too. I remain..."Squonk can't climb Solsbury Hill"!
You're welcome! I can't wait to hear what you think of it! Please come back and let us know.
Thank you for your experience with this pressing! Glad you are enjoying it!
As a big early Genesis fan, I’m looking to getting this. Great review, Scott.
Hope you enjoy it! Please come back and add your thoughts to the conversation.
Based on my one experience with the Nick Davis remasters, I think you'll be very pleased to hear the original mix presented is such fidelity as a on the AP 45
You're in for a treat.
Maybe they have t decided exactly where to split Suporrs Ready :-)
I'm not as concerned as some are about that, I'm sure it will be in the best possible spot and there are a couple of choices.
Looking forward to your next review... cheers!
Thanks for the additional information, much appreciated.
@ I’m pretty sure it will sound great as I had another listen on mine 😊
@@robertmorgan9205
I’m listening to it now. It's just what I needed to hear tonight. I love it.
Side 1
Eleventh Earl
One for the Vine (pt1)
Side 2
One for the Vine (pt2)
Your Own Special Way
Wot Gorilla?
Not ideal.
It's only a theory though.
They could have changed the running order and moved YOSW and WG forward but that would feel odd.
@ I thought about this too and it's true, a very difficult decision to resequence the album, as it flows perfectly.
Perhaps a separate release someday at 33 or on 2LP 33.
@@ThePressingMatters That would be nice.
Hold on to it!
i will listen to this on iTunes!
Let us know what you think! Will it be your first exposure to the album?
If you do, it's a different mix.
@@ThePressingMatters Yes my first exposure. And I will look out to hear the singers lips split as you said :)
@@zoomer1zoomerYes that's unfortunately true. I don't care for the remixes at all. Any nuances are lost.
Nice video! Would you be able to post some samples?
At this rate maybe they’ll come out in 2026 😂
Thank you! Well, with Genesis, there is an era for everybody. I'll be covering them all, wish they were doing Duke I must say.
everyone please e-mail chad and plead with him to do wind and wuthering!
I'm sure he is reading this! Vote with your voices! Wind and Wuthering must be done somehow!
i actually wouldn't mind and then there were three on atlantic series as well ha ha
Neither would I!
@@larsman9169 I can't imagine seeing them at this time, especially like you did! Count yourself very lucky!
I will definitely get back to you and let you know how it is.
If you want to re-home any of those old, less desirable pressings, I'm your guy!
You ought to come down to Miami for my famous garage sales.

@@ThePressingMatters Sure, you bet, Scott. Have a good week. 👍👍👍
I “corrected” that exchange.
@@ThePressingMatters Thanks, it must be a tough Monday for some people, and transference is the result. Such is life.
I don't think it's the first time. I decide what comments are value-add, and that one was not. Sorry I had to delete your reply to it as well.
They did not yet have the resources to labor over and produce a sonic gem like SEBTP,
I do have to remind myself of this as I hear early records in general. Some of the greatest performances in Jazz, vocal, classical, and rock were just not always recorded that well, so I've learned to set my expectations accordingly. It really helps me to avoid an initial feeling of disappointment and enjoy those records on a deeper level.
