  • Brake pad shims help prevent brake noise or NVH. They do this by creating a barrier between the brake pad and caliper. This prevents vibration from being transmitted into the rest of the vehicle and the ear of the driver. In this video, we look at what makes for an effective brake shim.

Why am I going through this problem now? 20 years never had it. I installed brand new brake pads on my 2003 CRV two weeks later the shim was falling down and making a wicked noise!!!

Not true. The glued shims have flexible glue that will allow for tiny amount of flexing. They are better than the shims just put on with no adhesive because they will make noise as the shim and pad backing plate rub on each other. Just like a dry door hindge swueaking. Use brake grease between shim and backing plate and you'll never hear a noise.

Use molykote m77 between brake pad backing plate and shim. If the shim is glued on then you can't use any type of lubricant and that glue will dry out in couple of days from brake heat and cause squeaking noises

Do they squeak without the shims? Mine fell off and I’m debating on just tossing them in trash

My car uses three shims per caliper. I replaced the pads/rotors and threw away two of the shims because they are getting rusty. Just used the one glued to the pad. So far no squeaks or sounds…brakes awesome.
