Whenever I go to the Korean grocery store, the woman asks me "how do you know what this is?" "What are you going to make with this?" And I tell her what recipe I'm trying to make and she tells me "I worry about you sometimes!" Or "wow even better than me!" Thank you maangchi for teaching me your ways =) you are the best.
I love how Maangchi explains the customs and folklore and beliefs surrounding every recipe she makes :3 It's always both a history/culture and cooking lesson.
Thank you maangchi for your videos. Especially for me. My mother left my sister and I to go back to korea when we were small. So even though our father tried his best, we didn't get that much korean food. We always had a jar of kimchi though lol. I grew up learning to cook the recipes of my hispanic father. now that I found you, I can now learn how to make korean food. You are so adorable and you make it look so easy! Now my daughter and can learn and cook together. Thank you again!
My family used to share food with our neighbors all the time when I was growing up. They would give us African food and we would give them soul food lol. We used to play with their son a lot so if the mom made food while we were there, she would hand us a spoon. It was interesting to me because sometimes she made communal dishes and we would eat together off of the same giant plate
Since I don't have pressure cooker, when I cooked red bean I always soaking the red bean In water at least 12 hours sometime when I finished my dinner I started soaking the red bean and the day after I can make delicious red bean porridge. just a personal experience 😀😀😀😀😀😀
my mother made this when i was a young child every year and i never knew the story behind it ..now that i am older i am going to make it for her this year and surprise her... love how you remind me of my childhood through your food
I love your channel! I love the stories you tell while making your dishes. Your the best Korean cooking channel I have found. I can't wait to buy your cookbook.
I was talking to my mom today and she asked me what dishes I miss from my childhood in Korea and this always comes to mind. My grandma always made this for us when we came to visit her in the countryside. Delicious! Wish I had some now.
I remember having this at the bath house in our small village, in Korea, when I was little. Now I know why! It was Winter Solstice and the Shamans ( women) were there drumming and dancing. It was like a dream this brought that memory back. Thank you, Maangchi. I cannot wait to make this in the winter
Must. Make. I love love love sweet porridges like these with plain rice cake balls. Sometimes in the asian supermarkets, they sell packages of frozen ones that have filling like peanut paste or black sesame or red bean paste and my mom buys them all the time. She boils some water with some rock sugar (the taste is similar to light brown sugar, maple syrup and honey) and lots of ginger and adds in the balls. So so tasty. Definitely a sweet late night snack.
I love how you always share a childhood memory and traditions Maangchi. And your descriptions of how the food taste always make me want some! Thank you Maangchi!
those rice flour balls remind me of what my mother used to put in a Filipino dessert made with coconut milk, various tropical fruits and some roots. so hearty and delicious, one of my fav desserts! (quite a number of variations on this dish, of course-our family called it ginat'an-just happens to be because of where my folks are from in the Philipines)
was thinking the same thing... although all I ever wanted in ginataang was the rice cakes and the coconut broth so basically this is red bean ginataang for me...now I'm about to text my mom to get some ready for Christmas XD
I was just about to comment that! Me and my grandma would make ginat'an bilo bilo every winter. I remember getting sticky hands from rolling so many rice cakes. We'd make it in a really huge pot. I'd also throw in extra jackfruit in there. :)
Oh, I love your recipes so much, and all the wonderful information about customs revolving around them and the great stories you always tell us make your videos a real treat to watch! Thanks, Maangchi!
Can u plz make something easy so I am make it at. School with in an hour and u can find that ingredients in uk as well but is it ok if u make it before jan 4th because I have to make it on that day and I am doing Korean food so plz help me
Wow!.Like 'bubur kacang merah',a type of dessert in Malaysia. (Bubur means Porridge and Kacang Merah is red beans,so it is Red bean porridge in English).I really like that you put the sugar just before eating it,unlike the Malaysian style red bean porridge that adding sugar while it is still cooked and to make it fragrant,we add screwpine leaves (daun pandan)tied in knots!.Yummy!.And,in Malaysia..we can eat red bean porridge anytime if we want to!.
A couple of mods that worked for me: 1. Soaking the red beans overnight in the fridge cut down cooking time. 2. Using cold water instead of boiling water to form up the glutinous rice dough made less of a mess and all of the flour was incorporated, there was less wastage. I didn't detect any difference in the texture of the rice balls.
i love it when neighbors share food with each other. i live in nyc now, and this never happens, which i find sad (i've literally never seen the people who live in the apartment next to me, and i've lived in my building for almost 2 years... lol). i grew up in an big chinese neighborhood in the USA (i'm asian american) and every week when a family had cooked a lot and had leftovers they would bring it to the other families, and we would do the same. :) :) :)
That sounds really nice :) I'd love to do that too but I live in Germany and people would look at me like I said I'd want to kill myself, since it's not common here at all.
We have the same recipe here in philippines . We called it 'GINATANG BILO-BILO' theres a lot of ingredients in our porridge like , banana, sweat potatoes, sometimes jackfruit, and PEARL
I just love this video, thank you so much. I'm half Japanese and I love adzuki beans with pretty much anything so I'm watching all your videos. I just marked my calendar for the winter solstice and I'll share with my neighbors. I might actually make this for our new year celebration, too, since it looks so yummy!!
The food is still delicious looking. I would love to make all of your recipes. I guess I understand now why your kitchen keeps changing. Because your videos 3 and 4 years old. Somebody should be watching these everyday
I used to have an adorable elder couple of Cambodian neighbors that would share food with my mom and I. I never understood why exactly but their food was always so good I would have to cook them something in return. I would bake them cute little cakes and make tarts for them as thank you gifts because I didn't know what they liked and I couldn't make any cultured foods back then. I moved recently and they were very sad to see me go which made me happy but also very sad. Sometimes I am invited to their house for dinner or to go pick mushrooms or go fishing and I always make them a cake or a bunch of my cute little tarts~
This looks delicious! Since my birthday is on the winter solstice, I'll have to make this for my birthday next year! It looks like just what I need to have an excellent day! Little late to make it today. Thank you for sharing!
In Indonesia we have a similar looking traditional dessert called "kolak biji salak"! It's sweetpotato and tapioca balls in a rich coconut milk+palm sugar soup. Super delicious!
wao maangchi! We Malaysian also will celebrate it and we have different style to cook the glutinous rice ball. some will put the rice ball with ginger pandan sugar water, some will put into salty soup and some will put into red bean soup like ur video!
Vegan, gluten free, healthy, delicious! I will definitely try this ❤ Thank you 😊 P.s.: Thank you for telling us the story of the dish. You usually also tell us what to serve it with and other useful information like that. I absolutely love that. It makes things a lot easier for non-Asians and I don't need to be afraid to try it. Thanks!
Hello maangchi Yes we share food (home made food) Like majboos (lamb/chuckle with rice) or Arabic sweets ...etc With our neighbors, families & dear friends... During Ramadan or holidays like eed al feter (the day right after Ramadan) or eed al adha (about one month after)
Hey Maangchi, I really like the symbolism behind this dish, and it's so comforting and delicious, I enjoy the pure red bean flavor! This is already the third time I've been making it for new year's, and I've been sharing it with friends who also liked it. :)
+Maangchi :"Do you ever share food with your neighbors to wish them goodluck?" I think cooking food for someone is a way to show your appreciation for them. :) Happy holidays, Maangchi!
Hi Maangchi just got your cook book love learning to make Korean food love the stories you tell about your family. Glad I found your channel keep up the fabulous way you share your cooking with all of us!
This video reminds me of my grandma. Everytime during the winter season, she will make something similar to this. But, in our culture, it's called Tang Yuan. Basically it's rice balls with sweet soup. The rice balls are made of glutinous rice flour and we have traditional peanut, sesame seeds and red bean filling in them. The soup makes it tastier because its sweet with ginger and lemongrass. Hehehe now I'm craving for it :)
We celebrated solstice too with round mini rice cake, we called it "tang yuan", with sweet ginger soup. The "tang yuan" symbolizes together. We celebrate solstice with all family members. Like your patjuk recipe, another way to cook the round rice cake :)
Hola, me gustan mucho sus recetas, y la forma en que explica, le agradecería enormemente que pudiera subtitular en español los vídeos. Gracias por compartir con nosotros su talento:-) saludos desde México.
Greetings from Malaysia! Today we celebrate winter solstice with our family. Winter solstice mean reunion with family for Chinese! Happy Winter Solstice Maangchi 😍😍😍
Hi Maangchi. I made this today... so yummy. I grew up eating this but slight variation...mom also added chapsal so there would be white grains within just like porridge style.. I too added chapsal. My mom thoroughly enjoyed it. Thank you again ^.^
When I bought my first house I had patjuk as celebration
Whenever I go to the Korean grocery store, the woman asks me "how do you know what this is?" "What are you going to make with this?" This video reminds me of my grandma. Everytime during the winter season, she will make something similar to this. But, in our culture, it's called Tang Yuan.
