  • Sowing the first vegetable seeds of the new growing season.
    #growyourownfood #nodig
Hi, I'm Dan and I grow a huge variety of vegetables for eating and also some Giant and Exhibition Show varieties for Local and even National Competitions.
Throughout the year I will try to show how I go about growing my produce and hopefully give a few tips and tricks along the way.
Whether it be how I grow potatoes in containers, growing basic veg for the home to growing a 10 pound onion or even a 100 pound marrow I will chart all my progress.
Please have a look at my videos and subscribe to my Channel.
    Thanks.

So glad sowing can still take place somewhere. Our mediterranean drought goes on and on, can't even water favourite plants to keep them alive this spring. Goodness knows if the nurseries and garden centres are selling anything: there's no point.

      We are the complete opposite.
It's been the wettest Autumn and winter I can remember.
Everywhere is sodden and farmers can't get onto land to prepare the soil.
If we had a mixture of your weather and ours it would be perfect.
      Cheers Dan 😊

I've not sown a sausage so far, here in Lincolnshire it's a complete washout, my garden allotment is a quagmire! I've normally found my get up and go by mid Feb but I'm so long in the tooth I know it's wasted effort 😂
Tomorrow I am going to push myself to plant my garlic and onion sets though in the raised beds.
I used to have the grow room in full production by Jan 1st but it's more hassle than it's worth with the electricity bills negating the jump on the season! I'm back to growing with the seasons until the government come to their senses with the energy costs.
Good to see you getting stuck in though 👍

Yeah all the fields round here are completely waterlogged.
Worst wettest winter I can remember.
My onion sets turned up today so they'll need showing into the wet soil soon.
      Oh joy.
      Cheers Dan 😊

Hi Dan - you've just reminded me - must sow my leeks and shallots asap - ta.
l usually grow two or more, of Leeks - Below Zero, Mammoth Pot, Giant Winter or Musselbrough and Shallots - Elista, Figaro, Zebrune or Long Red Florence.
Would recommend Figaro - similar to Elista / lovely flavour.
P.S. Do you also cover your leek and onion seeds i.e. as well as your shallot seeds, to get them away in the house 🤔.

    • @Allotment-diaryUk
      @Allotment-diaryUk  5 місяців тому

Yeah I always cover the trays just to keep the moisture in so the top doesn't dry out.
      Cheers Dan 😊

Maybe you are sowing them too deeply.
Just and so cover the seeds with fine compost and keep moist on a windowsill and you should succeed.
      Cheers Dan 😊

Or try different seed packet aka different variety. All varieties behave a little different. You might got a variety which does not do so well where you are or in the soil you have. Also watch out for slugs, and flea beetles. They like to decimate them.

I've done exactly the same as you Dan, sowed the Elista seeds yesterday in modules and brought them indoors. How long do they usually take to germinate without a heated propagator? I'm growing them singly this year just for fun.

Depending on how warm your house is they should be through within 2 to 3 weeks max.
Even sooner if your house is a bit warmer possibly.
