Great video! I needed this! Just repotted an orchid for the first time a few days ago! She was tightly pack in sphagnum moss. She was in a tiny 3in flimsy plastic pot thing and the amount of moss that I pulled out of it almost filled a medium size mixing bowl. Like 5x the size.. But thanks to this video I just checked on her and shes already dry. (She has a mix of bark chips, coconut husk and sphagnum moss.. And she in a well ventilated pot) I never thought of her drying out faster, even though now I'm like durr its kinds common sense. Thanks anyway!!
this was a super helpful video Danni! i too noticed that when spring was around the corner things really began to boom aka: grow irregardless of the growth set up . I couldn't believe it , just out of nowhere things began to sprout whereas in winter there's is generally very little happening, i think that is the key knowing when the orchid growth season is . For your video on what happens after a repot , i think this is a really great topic especially for beginners like me ... because we really don't know what to expect, we often refer to regular plants , and don't know why certain things work or they don't with orchids. Like for instance the adaptation period from mounted orchids to potted ones , you didn't mention this , but this is something i learned and how you mentioned putting them from sphagnum to semi hydro what are the differences, this i found key components to aiding the orchid to adapt. I personally didn't know all these things and how much orchids have to adapt to a new situation, so thank you for everything and your recent video's have been amazing!
Just recently repotted two rescues, they were in so much sphagnum moss that I doubt it could have ever dried out. Poor things were really badly packed in, I'm just glad I got to it in time
Glad you got to them and were able to help. I had to repot one of mine as its medium was breaking down a lot as I am rather new still I didn't see the signs. It was doing well until I saw it had mold on the bark and it was breaking down. The roots started looked terrible so I decided to look further. It had a smell so I was freaked out that I waited too long. I cut off the affected roots and mushy ones. Put them in hydrogen peroxide and then I repot it in fresh medium, I had new orchid bark and it's mixed with other bits to help drainage. Sphagnum moss isn't so widely available here and the clay balls are a bit expensive for very little and didn't have much experience with them so I stuck with what I knew. I found a rescue at a box store though that had fallen over a lot and out it's pot losing its bark and looked rather dehydrated. So I decided to get it because people would not take something that's not perfect where I live. I repot it and it's doing a lot better, if I didn't let it get sunburned by accident it would have been better but it's recovering and growing again.
Good video! Like that you mentioned how important timing is for repotting. Same happened here for me. I have been trying to get a dendrobium to root/send up new shoots for months. I just potted it in bark and put it outdoors to hang in the trees. We are now getting our summer rain pattern here in s. FL USA. I looked a little while ago and that orchid has two new sprouts. HOORAY! Thanks for using such scientific methods and sharing them with orchid growers. Rather have the right information than a "quick fix" that hasn't been tested.
Love your videos, your super clear with your motives and you've helped me alot with my orchids. Love getting notified when you've posted a new video! I've also started to use semi-hydro and have noticed a really positive change! Thanks for everything you do and teach!
I love this video! And it makes me realize how great it is to be a member of your channel. Remember the conversation we had about my Miltoniopsis? Thanks for all of you info! I also am about to try out semi hydro on a few of my orchids🤞
Hi Dani Thanks for all the information you give us in your videos. Would you be kind enough to explain further in this matter: orchids from bark to semi hydro are not used to that much water and begin to rot and new roots will adapt better to semi hydro. In the mean time how to deal with slow and gradual adaptation for this transition. Keep up the hard work 👌
I just changed the pot of my Spring Dream Apolon Beauty, the roots were incredibly damaged, I had to remove a lot, I'm just fear a bit too many. One or two liefs are being little sad just now but that's all I can feel about it for the time being. I don't think I have ever seen that many bad routes on an orchid up-to-date. How on this earth do they manage in the shops to make them bloom in such a stage it's anyone's guess. It is my second experience like that, but this was from far the strongest. I hope my orchid will make it. I have a hidden feeling I'd have lost it anyway had I had not done anything. Please, fingers crossed for my white little baby. Thank you
Can you help me? I just reported a phal that was done blooming. I used RepotMe Monterey orchid medium. I was very careful to clip squishy roots with sterilized scissors, I wore nitrile gloves, I did the hydrogen peroxide. Everything you showed in your video. I noticed today that some of the very bottom roots have fuzzy mold. Do I need to repot again? I keep them in my bathroom with a western exposure. I water weekly on a regular schedule. Should I move them, not water as much, something different? The top roots look great, like nice green beans. Leaves feel firm. Please help me?! This has become my new hobby and I don’t want to lose and orchid. Oh, I also use clear plastic pots with slits and holes for drainage.
what great timing! i just repotted orchids i hauled last weekend and was wondering if i should fertilize or not. but i got an opaque pot and i cant see the water level. are there any tips or tricks to time for watering? if not, i’ll rely on my largest clear potted orchid for reference. lol
I am not really into horticulture, but I always have a thing that bugs me: many fungi posess catalase activity that protects them during peroxide exposure. But seemingly it induces toxin production instead
Is the matter of repotting an orchid with extremely crowded roots (roots which spill over the top and a pot too small to allow for plenty of medium) urgent enough to justify repotting no matter the phase on the orchid? My mini phal has lots of healthy roots and leaves and still has all of its blooms... But the roots I fear are breaking near the top as a result of over crowing. Should I wait until the blooms drop or repot asap? Thanks!
Hi Dani, Great timing on your repot recovery video. I have an urgent question. I am relatively new to repotting. I repotted my large unifolate Cattleya from a bark mix into fresh bark about a month ago. The roots were good, and I was very careful not to damage roots. But I am just recently noticing a fowl smell when I water it. It is in a clear pot, and the roots I see look good, and there are growing root tips. The pseudobulbs and leaves look good. I am suspecting some dead roots because of the smell. But what do I do? Just continue with what I am doing, or unpot to cut out any dead roots to stop any rotting? But couldn’t that just cause more death and possible rot? Please help!! Thank you!
I repotted some Phals a couple of months ago into semi hydro and they’re doing great- new leaves, new roots and now new flower spikes ( I’m in Australia-wintertime). I potted them into glass vases with side drainage holes. I can see some of the old roots are dying off.Should I disturb them again , remove the dying roots and repot or just keep up weekly flushing ? Thanks Dani for the awesome videos- I’m learning a lot from you.
A-M Thomas I am I NZ what brand of leca did you use? we only have 1 brand here that i can find, and I have had no luck, I'm not sure if it's me, my environment or the leca. i think it's the leca because every new root tip the plants produced died on contact with the leca no matter the moisture level.
Kate Young Hello Kate. I’ve used 2 types now -Canna Aqua Clay Balls (from AquaGardening QLD) and Liaflor Expanded Clay (from Hydroponic Express WA)..I really like the Liaflor as it’s available in several sizes. The more “air loving” orchids are potted in 8-16mm and those orchids that like more moisture in 4-8mm LECA or a mix of both. Have you thoroughly washed the LECA prior to potting? I wash it several times to remove all dust then boil it.
A-M Thomas ok it's the canna that I have, I washed it and boiled it, but still no luck!! I can't work out what I'm doing so wrong :( I have tried 6 phals 3 went to far to even save, a kingianum, a zygopetalum and trying a ocidium twinkle right now. All had signs of new growth, and using reverse osmosis water ect..... I would like to get them to work but I'm now to scared to try anymore
Kate Young That’s terrible,I can understand your hesitation. I’ve potted 30+ into semi hydro (phals, psycopsis, cattleya, miltoniopsis, tolumnia and mini oncidiums) and all have taken to it like a duck to water in a short period of time (2 months). The cattleya had the biggest setback but now I have new roots and 2 new growths. Mine are kept indoors in a sunroom that I heat overnight (with a simple fan heater). I use tap water -ph adjusted with citric acid. I don’t know what’s happening with your orchids. I don’t think it would be the LECA. Are they seedlings perhaps? Mine have all been established orchids with signs of new root growth prior to repotting.
A-M Thomas all established flowering sized orchids grown in a home environment, it's crazy!! As I get divisions or when 2 are "accidentally" potted into a pot, I will continue to experiment because I won't care so much about looking a double up, I am sure I can work this out!
I've had a complex hybrid harlequin type phal for 13 months and it has grown 2 new leaves in my care. The leaves it came with are oval shaped like you'd expect with a phal. They are about 9 cm long and about 7 or 8 cm wide. The two leaves it has grown with me are a similar shape to the aeranthis you show here...long and thin. They are about 18 cm long but only about 5 or 6 cm wide. Do you know what could be happening here? It sits in front of a large Southern facing window. I keep the blinds closed so it doesn't get direct sunlight, but it is still bright in the room. It's in semi-hydro and does have a pretty small root system, but the leaves are not floppy at all and seem to be getting enough hydration. I do fertilze at a weak concentration because the roots get deposit build up on them, but i don't have deposits on the leca at all. Any help would be great! Thank you for all the helpful information you share with all of us!
Hi Danni. I have a phalaenopsis orchid that I repotted about a month or 2 ago and the leaves and flowers got really floppy and leathery. I thought it needed more water but when I started watering it more often I got fungus gnats. What should I do?
Question: Hi Danni I repotted a Phal from decomposed bark into S/H two months ago. Roots were not in good shape at that time. Now it's growing a new root which I hope will move down into the leca and a new leaf. I can see some green roots inside the pot but most are mushy and the pot smells bad. I can't see any mold. Should I cut away bad roots and repot in S/H or leave it be to establish more?
Hello Danni I have a Psychopsis Papilio and I want to reply him but I heard they don’t like to be their roots disturbed..how you recommend to do ..what’s your Best idea for repot it?..I am thinking just to cut around the plastic pot where he is and don’t remove any media and put it on a bigger pot..the media is a mix of charcoal and bark..it doesn’t look bad ..what do you think.Thank you!
Dani I just re-potted a Phal it had a little bit of root rot that I had to cut but it seemed to have lots of good roots still (it had been in the pot from the store it was far too hard packed and held onto too much moisture). I have a new well airated pot so hes not getting too wet in the new pot BUT NOW i have spots on my leaves where the chlorophyl is fading, when i look through towards the sun they look like transparent little spots. Do you have any idea what might be going on? Even on a few of the leaves there are little raised bumps. So sad because I had a new leaf growing and some new aerial roots growing it seemed very healthy I thought he could handle the re pot. Help?
Is it normal that my repotted Phal still has damp medium a week from the day I repotted? I don't want to over water, and since it's new, different medium I can't really see the roots through the clear pot.
Hi danny, i have an already established phalaenopsis that was repotted from nurseries sphagnum moss to semi Hydro, two months ago, she is doing well having new leafs, still with the flower spike complete, but i can see threw the glass pot that some original roots are dead, they are all brown and already disintegrating. what should i do? should i let it be since all the plant is doing well even with new growths, or should i repot it cutting the dead roots? thanks danny
Hi Dani! I’m new to your channel. I’ve been binge watching. I wanted to ask about my phalaenopsis orchid’s aerial roots. They seem to be drying out and shriveling. The root system otherwise is green. What does this mean?
Hi Danny, I’ve started to use semi hydroponics with my phalaenopsis, most of which are “rescues” either from shops or from friends. I have been given a dendrobium Nobile, which was in a dreadfully dehydrated state. I have removed the keiki sand they are doing fine. The leaves have all dropped from the old flowering cane, it had a little stumpy growth at its base, and an immature cane which has retained one leaf. I didn’t realise I could use semihydroponics with these. Should I repot out of orchid bark. Is there anything I can do to help the abused dendrobium get well?
I have question! I have a Iwan. Apple Blossom that needs to be up potted. I have been transferring my entire collection to S/H and it is working beautifully for me but my question is, if my orchid is in pure lava rock and I am putting it in LECA do I need to remove all the rock or can I leave some to keep from damaging the roots that are super attached.
Hi dani! I am a new subscriber and a recent orchid enthusiast. I live in the Philippines where it is tropical and mostly summer. I would like to ask if you have any idea on how to make an orchid stake. They don't sell it in my country and most stakes here are imported with the orchids from thailand. How do I make or get an orchid stake? Thank you.

Do you put media over the rizones of catalaya's yes I'm new to orchids😁
This is perfect timing! I repotted an orchid for the first time in semi hydro a week or so ago and was wondering how to tell if I did a good job

Is it possible to grow bromeliad pup cuttings in semi hydro?
What are those brown little round balls????
Miss gardengirl
wow
Are you using clay pebbles??
when the giveaway will be ?
Thank you for that information, but please speak a little slow, thank you.
