  • The Fluke or Soft Jerkbait is a great choice when the bass are shallow in the fall. Here's how you fish it when the water starts to cool off and the bass move shallow

Bass fishing with a fluke can be an effective technique, as the fluke is a versatile soft plastic bait that closely imitates a baitfish. Here are some tips to help you have success when bass fishing with a fluke:
Rigging: The most common way to rig a fluke is weightless Texas-style. Insert a wide-gap worm hook into the nose of the fluke, burying the hook point into the bait. Then, thread the hook through the body of the fluke and expose the point near the belly. This rigging allows for a weedless presentation.
Presentation: Cast the fluke near cover such as weed beds, docks, fallen trees, or any areas where bass might be hiding. Let the fluke sink for a few seconds, then start a slow and subtle retrieve. Twitch your rod tip to make the fluke dart and swim erratically, imitating a wounded baitfish. Experiment with different retrieval speeds and twitches to find what works best on a given day.
Pause and Twitch: After a few twitches, pause the retrieve for a few seconds. This mimics a baitfish momentarily stopping or suspending, which can trigger a bass to strike. Sometimes, the strike happens on the pause, so be prepared for a sudden hit.
Color Selection: Flukes come in various colors, and the choice depends on water clarity and the bass's feeding preferences. In clearer water, natural colors like shad, pearl, or watermelon often work well. In murky water, try using brighter colors like chartreuse or white to increase visibility.
Retrieve Depth: Adjust the retrieve depth based on where the bass are holding. If they are shallow, fish the fluke near the surface or just below. In deeper water, let the fluke sink for longer periods before starting the retrieve.
Seasonal Considerations: Bass behavior can change with the seasons. In spring, when bass are in the shallows for spawning, work the fluke near beds and cover. In summer, focus on deeper water and use a faster retrieve. Fall can be an excellent time for fluke fishing as bass are actively feeding before winter.
Be Patient: Bass fishing with a fluke can require patience. Sometimes, bass will follow the bait before striking, so be prepared for a sudden hit at any moment. If you're not getting bites, try adjusting your presentation, retrieve speed, or color until you find what triggers a response.
Remember to check local fishing regulations and have the appropriate fishing license before heading out. Bass fishing with a fluke can be exciting, and with practice, you'll improve your technique and increase your chances of landing some impressive bass. Good luck!

Funny you started with this bait. So did I after seeing your video(s). Bought a lakeside home last fall. Fishing experience to that point had always been with live bait. Watched your videos, bought a couple colors of Flukes and had great success this year. Well, until mid-August when it was hot up here in Illinois. Thanks so much for all your content. Curious, when rigging the fluke on the hook, do you worry about how much of it covers the eye of the hook?
I have found that leaving the eye out will make it run and act differently than it you cover the eye with the head.
Just wandering if you've found any kind of concern in that?
Thanks again for the great info.

I occasionally rig the fluke upside down. That way you are not skin hooking the hook and the hook will expose itself freely when a fish hits it because it is in the hook slot. I can get 5-10 bass per fluke doing this.

Great video! That said, I never hear of guy’s throwing a fluke in the winter months ( Dec, Jan, Feb )… it would seem like a fluke would be deadly! Long cast, let it sink 10-12’+, and slow twitch it back to the boat. Fluke’s have an uncanny ability to look like a dying baitfish. You’d think ( seeing that they can be worked slowly but with a ton of action ) they’d be a great backup to a jerkbait!

Why the leader and the swivel? Can’t you just tie fluoro directly to the hook? Do you get better action with the swivel and leader?

To me, flukes are just the grown man version of a senko

I think the fluke is going to be one of my go to baits ounce spring comes back around. I want to do some more with lighter baits like cranksbaits and weightless stuff. Wacky rig too!
