Released in 1983, I always envisioned "Institutionalized" as a protest against parents joining the trend of sticking their kids in hospitals when they seemed "different". This song speaks from the child's perspective saying "ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!"

It was that. And more.
There were religious satanic panic parents in the 80s who would send their children away to be fixed. Also just lazy parents who sent their children away to be fixed just to get rid of them because they couldn't be bothered. First time I heard this song I absolutely loved it. I had been institutionalized 3 times already. About a year each time. Each time I became more spiteful. Now I see the world clearly and hate everything and everyone. So it really did help.

Grew up in Orange County CA and in the 80's Suicidal Tendencies was banned from playing in our County because violence at concerts.

Back in about '89 or '90, I was walking down an alley back to my high school after lunch while listening to this tape on my Walkman. Some cops driving down the alley stopped me and asked what I was doing out of school. I told them my lunch break was almost over and needed to get back. They asked me what I was listening to and when I told them Suicidal Tendencies, the cop in the passenger seat says "Like, all I wanted was a Pepsi?" I said yeah and they let me go.
A year or two later, I got to see them live with Pantera and Exodus at a college gymnasium. After the show, I was so exhausted that I sat down in the lobby waiting for my buddies to come out and some guy with a leg cast and crutches started screaming at me incoherently for no reason and then winds up his leg about to kick me in the face with his cast and a cop (there were a few dozen of them there that night keeping watch on us delinquents) flew over me and tackled him while his partner helped me up and made sure I was alright. Other than a couple of very small incidents like that, it was a pretty tame event and no-one caused trouble for the cops so they were all pretty friendly... until they caught me and my friends stuffed 11 deep in a old Thunderbird trying to leave the parking lot. Of course they just shook their heads and made half of us get out and walk, but we met back up a couple blocks from the college and piled back in for the hour ride home. Fun times!

This song was an Anthem for a whole generation of kids, of which I was one. To myself it speaks to how society and (your parents) judged you because of the way you dressed the music you listened to and the length and color of your hair. Yet we are all products of the institutions put in place by said society. This whole album is truly a masterpiece of skate, punk genre which also is a bridge to the metal crossover era.
In my day, a band like Suicidal Tendencies was called "skater metal", which was a blend of metal with punk and rap.
It was one of the first bridging of gaps between the genres and cliques. Proving music brings people together.
This makes me think of that photo of Eazy-E chilling with skaters.
they kinda were the inventors of crossover, at least in America; in the UK the scenes were already pretty close, NWOBHM had some punk influence and some of the 80s bands like the Exploited and GBH were heavier than the ones that came before.

Yeah, DRI too. There was that vibe going around then where I was in San Francisco. Thrasher magazine and Pushead’s music picks had that going. I was a teenager in San Francisco then and that was the cool thing about the scene here. A lot of that sort of thing. Metal, punk, thrash, whatever man, it’s all angry skate rock and we all got along.

For us old GenXers who grew up in the 80s in America (and more specifically, California), this was the punk band that shaped us - not the more famous groups like The Clash or Sex Pistols or whatever. All we wanted was a Pepsi, and they wouldn't give it to us.

This song, and album are underrated gems. This song, in particular, is written and executed so flawlessly. The way he begins rambling, and the music speeds up to match. It gives you a sense of his mania.
This song was my teenage anthem. So when my kids got to their teens I played it for them. I think anyone who had to deal with a noticeable generation gap with their parents can relate to this song.
I showed this song to my daughter. She and her friends now listen to it. But they laugh hysterically the whole time 🤷
This is what gen x dealt with as children. Adults were very judgemental back then.
I envy anyone who was born after the downfall of "The Moral Majority".

This is so far removed from my gen X experience it is ridiculous. I had hair down to my waste, wore ripped jeans, concert t-shirts, PARTIED, at my house AND my friends houses. If anything they weren't moral enough! Sorry your folks were lame bro! Guess who showed up back then? EVERYONE! No one cared either.
One of my fave bands...saw them three times in Toronto through the late 80's to early 90's.Small clubs for first two shows then opening for Metallica for third show.Great band ,great tunes...check out their later stuff like Gotta kill Captain Stupid, You Can't bring me Down, etc...
Rocky is shredding during the whole song I love it!
This song perfectly embodied the struggles of the average alt/punk/metal/grunge kids of the 80s and 90s. The traditional families just didn't know how to deal with kids that acted differently, even tho in many cases yes we were on drugs and doing things most people wouldn't understand. Still most of us meant no harm to anyone and just wanted to express ourselves differently from everyone else.
Suicidal tendencies has a killer sound that is more than just this song tho. Most of the lights camera revolution album is a total masterpiece with lots of grooves and iconic guitar work. The spin off band infectious grooves is also a fun ride thru a more funk oriented punk metal vibe.
Suicidal tendencies original bass player is now the bass player for metalica, Robert Trujillo and he's an absolute bass beast.
80's dude.
That bass player is an absolute monster. I love how he stomps around on stage, accentuating notes with big body gestures.
I don't believe he was the original bass player though.

When you see these dudes live it's like watching a crossover thrash band fronted by a motivational speaker. Energy levels at maximum.
Saw them open for Queensryche for the Operation:Livecrime tour. It was the 2nd loudest concert I've ever been to. it was over 20 years ago and I can still feel the bass vibrating my brain. :)

@@chito2294 Tool on the Lateralus tour. The bass was so loud my hair follicles felt like I was on a 5 day amphetamine bender. Moving like snakes on my scalp and arms, along with the, ummm, visual enhancements I had taken a few hours before, it was the trippiest concert experience I ever had.

Venice California skate punk is what you just listened to. It’s 80s and they crossed over to more metal a few years after this. They were actually banned in Southern California for some years. Love that you are venturing into some hardcore 80s music. This was my teenage and young adult decade and this music is all me. Great reaction 🤘🤘🤘👏👏👏🤙🤙🤙

Psycho Mike saved me from getting my arse thumped by some V-13 goons who were passing out flyers for ST at a show in front of the Cathay De Grand. Note to self, don’t throw an ST flyer to the ground when V-13 fans are around…..😬🤪

Awesome job stepping out of your comfort zone a bit there. This was a pretty ground breaking album when it came out in '83 and it still sounds amazingly fresh today. They moved to a more Metal sound after this, I think you guys would dig Can't Bring Me Down or How Will I Laugh Tomorrow? from that side of things

As social commentary, this is really one of the most brilliant, insightful, important songs ever written.
This is off their 1st record which was more punk, as they went on they went into Thrash . Good stuff

One thing that a lot of people fail to realize/remember is that when this song came out (and I was a teenager) there was this fad/craze with parents sending their kids to these behavioral institutions for....being teenagers. You know the rebellious teenage years that we all go through? So yeah this song had a LOT more meaning back in the 80's.

Dude is a beast. I saw Metallica live his first year with the band and he did an interlude between songs to give the other members a rest. He was in a low crouch seated position with his bass on his lap whilst playing it, for a loooong time. Dude's gotta have tree trunk thighs my lord

I loved these guys. Mike Muir was awesome live. Hardcore 80s punk from California. Some people called it thrash.
That's because Thrash is influenced by Punk. This is Crossover Thrash.

I think you guys would like their song You Can't Bring Me Down...has excellent musicianship and is more of a "proper" song. It's more of a thrash Metallica style song.
This is Very early Suicidal Tendencies. Their early stuff was really dark and offbeat. They did a lot of social commentary in their songs. You should check out You Can’t Bring Me Down, Send Me Your Money or Have Will I Laugh Tomorrow When I Can’t Even Smile Today.
ST has a very interesting history if you look into them. As many bands come up with names for their fans they called theirs the ST Army. Tipper Gore actually worked very hard at getting them banned in a lot of places saying that they were encouraging gang violence although in actuality they were working with some rappers and other community groups to try to control or end gang violence. Join The Army is another great song you could check out.
Black Flag and Suicidal Tendencies were 2 of the bands that inspired Ice T to start his own metal/ punk band.

Typical 80's teen angst. I knew some kids that were shipped to wherever for "their own good". This is one of those bands that change me musically. Specially their self titled album. This isn't Rocky though. It's Grant Estes and Jon Nelson. And if Rocky is underrated (which he is not,stop overusing that word,please. Anyone who plays metal or punk knows and appreciates him) then Grant Estes and Jon Nelson (not sure which is playing the bulk of the guitar) is virtually nonexistent. The drummer from this record (Amery Smith) is also incredible and very unique.

Anyway,my point was that even you said that Rocky "rarely" gets praised. (Which I disagree with, but not important right now) But that means that he at least gets praised. When was the last time you heard someone praise Grant Estes or Jon Nelson? Or even your friend Louiche? Exactly. I'm trying to say that these guys made an incredible record,and get almost 0 praise for it. THAT to me is underrated. Just trying to get them some love.
Suicidal tendencies are one of the most missed, under rated bands that has ever been. Check out " monopoly on sorrow" or anything else from the album "The Art of Rebellion ' or "Lights, camera, Revolution ". Also their side project "Infectious Grooves " . Absolutely amazing creativity and originality.

A KILLER tune! The syncopated but heavy groove, the guitar gradually winding out more, then the blast beat peak fury of the chorus. Loved this FOREVER, thanks for doing this, good dialogue on it. The thing you do best. Keep on doing it, pleeeeeeeeeez!

This is a big time GenX song. About how our middle class parents lived separate lives in the same house and then just institutionalized us if we stepped too far out of their comfort zone. And it is a song, I've danced to it many times. Broke my nose dancing to it once.
Welcome to Punk Music. This song was my "go to" when I was mad at my parents (rebellious teen and all). I'd crank this all the way up to "11".....just trying to piss 'em off. Worked like a charm!

It’s hardcore punk. It was played alot by college radio stations in the early 80s. Northwestern University in Chicago played it Saturday nights on the show “Fast n Loud”, 89.3 FM. Evanston, Chicago. I was 15 years old when I discovered it in 1984. Thanks for the great review!

First time I heard this song, this album.. I was 7 years old and sitting in an institution. A series of events that led to my parents divorce and my own self isolation and seclusion put me in a situation where this song just seemed to tell the story of my life..
I can relate to how manic the song feels. It starts out slow and builds just like anxiety.

This album is a MASTERPIECE.
This song never ceases to crack me up every time I hear it. I always took this as straddling that line between tongue-in-cheek humor and being straight up serious. I've always found it funny because I was a skater punk as a kid and while I never ran into anything serious like this with anyone trying to institutionalize me, the attitudes I'd run into with parents/teachers trying to push their flavor of normal on me when I wanted nothing to do with it was pretty spot on.
So glad you guys did this one, and cant believe I just now saw it. You have to react to "How will I laugh tomorrow?" That's my favorite song of theirs.
