How to grip a gaming mouse for best aim potential

  • I switched from palm grip to fingertip grip and noticed a big improvement in aim, especially because I could use smaller mice. It's something that takes a long while to adjust to, so I would recommend people using palm or claw palm give it a try.
    Also note on that point with the fingers raised off the mouse ... the higher they are, the longer they have to travel, so the "slower" your latency times are going to be. That's like playing with a higher ping!
    This is a casual chat video, trying something new. Sound quality isn't like the others because I was using a small microphone plugged directly into the camera.
    Hopefully it's ok!

    For palm grip, for it to be properly effective you need to use your full arm to aim, mixing in alongside of wrist movements. Doing this fixes the issue of vertical adjustments, as well as helps with longer movements for lower sensitivities.

    • @taloonys9418
      @taloonys9418 2 роки тому +10

      don't worry about grip's efficiency, it's all about your arm control and unique control parts of arm. For example ins destroys 99% of aimers and he uses palm grip (after 2 years, yeah...)

    • @naejimba

      I agree with this as I actually use palm grip myself; you are basically lowering your sensitivity and when you are finding targets you are using your whole arm. Once you get close to a target then you use all of the subtle adjustments that he shows in the video... I can still make those adjustments with a palm grip, it's just I have to move my wrist/etc. MUCH less than I see people do with finger/claw (which in my experience leads to less fatigue and ZERO pain or discomfort). Even with lower sensitivities those larger arm movements allow you to cover the distance of your pad much faster which helps with things like a 180. You have to have a larger mousepad if you are using your arm, but for obvious reasons that is something people do regardless of grip.

    • @naejimba
      @naejimba Рік тому

      @@HappyBeezerStudios , I agree with G.K. here 100%. I use palm grip and a deathadder. Typically people who use palm grip ike the feel of this mouse in their hand, and it being a larger mouse means I NEVER have to worry about my fingers the end of it. Even more interesting though is in the video where he was talking about having to move your index over for scroll wheel; with this setup my index finger does NOT need to move to do so... I simply curve my index finger and it naturally will scroll. It makes me think of how in the video he talks about the side buttons, and how you do not have to move your thumb to hit them, but rather you are using either the tip (which is like the index click) or bend at the joint (scroll). Same concept.
      Another important thing to mention is that due to the size of my hand the heel of my palm is on the mouse pad and NOT on the mouse itself; technically it is still a palm grip since half of my palm is in contact with the mouse, but my hand isn't choked up against it where there isn't any room to adjust vertically. Now, if I had smaller hands I would not be able to do that, and would not be able to adjust any vertically (just like we saw the demonstration in the video!). So I would assume hand size has a lot to do with this as well. I hope this explains it a bit. =)

    Palm grip tends to work well for when people use very low sensitivity and play games that do not have a lot of vertical camera motion. The ADS sens of a lot of a good Battlefield 4 infantry players can be as low as 60-120cm, and the majority of them are palm grippers.

I aim so much easier with it.. i've been using fingertip and claw for so long that when i changed to palm, i already have really good micro adjustments, and wrist control but now with palm... i don't have any errors what so ever when i aim or flick to check an angle, as if the palm was the missing link.. it still is a matter of preference, this video just gave you more options and now your preference has changed, that's all. Your grip still depends on the size of the mouse though, maybe you were trying to palm a smaller mouse and now realize it's easier to claw it.

  • @a.y.2404

    Zy, something to consider regarding anchors points. Higher sensitivity wrist aimers tend to have their wrist/lower palm serve as an anchor point. Low sensitivity players commonly use their forearm as an anchor point instead. If you tried to predominately aim with your arm and use your wrist as an anchor point there would be too much drag and friction to accomplish this seamlessly. So the anchor point changes based on context, but it still exists.
    Edit: Also, the mouse wheel is one reference guide for finger placement, but so are the side buttons. I find that if my thumb is misaligned with the side buttons then I have to adjust my grip to access them during game, which can throw my aim off. In fact, a good indicator that a mouse is properly sized for my hand is that I can comfortably access the side buttons and the mouse wheel simultaneously instead of prioritizing one at the expense of the other, as I found myself doing when I used smaller mice such as the original G Pro.

    I took your advice and switched to a small mouse (model o-) and fingertip. I've used it for around 4 months now and the extra vertical ROM is nice but you sacrifice stability. I realized I was struggling with micro adjustment accuracy so I tried going back to my model o so I could rest my pinky and ring knuckle on the mouse. This gave me a lot of stability and decreased the range of motion of my fingers. I can still aim with my fingers though just not as far but it is far more accurate. Small mouse with fingertip definitely has its advantages but it makes precision a bit harder.
    I've tried just about every possible grip for a couple months each and they all had their pros and cons but it never mattered what I used I still performed at about the same level and improved over time. Beyond being comfortable I don't think grip really makes much of a difference at all.

    Just wanted to note that palm claw is better for reaction times. So if you are holding an angle where you do not have to move much, it is actually better. I use claw grip except when I am holding an AWP angle in CS where I use palm claw. Higher knuckle while touching mouse button 1 increases reaction time.

    I use palm so i dont have to cramp my hand up all the time. I tried claw for a good 6 months(until my razor died) and while i had no better aim, i ran into all sorts of other problems like clicking when quickly putting the mouse down, activating the side buttons on accident, firing on accident.
    Palm solves all that. Its way easier to lift the mouse up(if it has a decent shape, ec2 b, mx 518).
    The grip is way more relaxed as well.
    Also up and down is hardly ever a straight vertical movement and almost every single time requires forearm aim and then a minor adjustment with the wrist. I never had any issues with that.
    Many of the youtubers make it sound like palm is so inferior, but i dont think so. I think you didnt use palm long enough or you are simply bad at forearm aim and medium to low sense.
    I get consistency(less mistakes), a more relaxed grip in long sessions and about the same accuracy and speed.
    There must be a valid reason that 1/3 of the top 350 csgo pros use ec1 a or ec2 a.

      They're mostly all old pros though. More and more people are moving to claw and fingertip
      You don't cramp your hand if you use the relaxed fingertip grip or relaxed palm grip. If you're using your forearm for vertical aim then youre inherently not anchoring your wrist or do not have a 90 degree angle on your elbow. This is bad for your aim and for your posture.

    I agree with a lot of these tips. I'm like hybrid tip/claw player in the sense like you that when I pull the mouse back to microadjust it raises my fingers and pretty much doubles the arch on them. For the side buttons I rest my thumb between both and use a slide and click motion. It's pretty subtle in terms of movement but only using the tip of my thumb for both buttons. One thing I'd LOVE to see on a mouse is another side button on the right side where the ring finger rests. It would need to be fairly ergonomic in terms of it's shape to be acceptable so I can still stabilize the mouse properly and click it without excessive force or moving that finger. A also really wouldn't mind having a lip/wing on the right side either. I feel like I use my ring/pinky slightly touching the pad to kind of "control" micro movements but I'd still be willing to give it a try.

    This video made me take notice of how I hold the mouse. I thought I was a palm-gripper. Apparently I'm a finger-tip-gripper.
    The bad news is; even though I'm naturally using an ideal grip, I am wicked horrible at Quake Live, and clearly no amount of mouse gripping adjustments is gonna replace the many thousands of hours needed to be good at a game like this.
    It is fun to hop into Call of Duty here and there after playing Quake exclusively. The opponents in CoD deathmatches look like they're playing in slow-motion after you've become acclimated to Quake for a bit.

    I've tried for months to change from Palm grip to claw/finger tip. I went from the Deathadder, upon it breaking, to a Model O. It's very hard for me to palm the Model O, especially due to the size of my hand. I've found that when running aim tests my aim is actually significantly better when I force a palm grip on the Model O though. I think it's due to my hand size, desk height, and sensitivity combined, but who knows.

  • @naejimba
    @naejimba Рік тому

    Some of this depends on the size of your hands. I use a deathadder and am technically a palm grip, but it is only about the top 1/4th of my palm that actually rests on the mouse. Because of this I have far more horizontal adjustment than you do. Another distinction is that people like myself tend to use a lot of arm movement, have a lower sensitivity (compared to fingertip/claw on a smaller mouse), and a very large mouse pad. As your sensitivity gets lower, you don't require as much fine tuning adjustment (since your motions tend to be larger, more focused on arm movement, and largely uses the elbow as a pivot). Especially since it requires almost no wrist movement this is much better ergonomically (no fatigue or discomfort) while the lower sensitivity allows for more precision.
    At any rate, it is best to experiment with different mice, grips, and sensitivity to find out what works for you. You are 100% correct that everyone's hands are different.

    Palm Griper for ~14years here ( attempting to be a "formerly known palm griper") . I developed a habit of using Palm grip when I was young because i thought it was the only way to grip a mouse ( i was young and ignorant to other techniques) I personally think I have great aim w/ FPS games, but one of my greatest weakness was micro adjustments, specifically vertical micro adjustments (back and forth movements) because of the restriction with Palm grip. About 8 years ago when I was 15 I got more serious about PC gaming I was aware about different techniques but i figured if I am good at it and already have the muscle memory why change it? ( also I couldn't afford to buy multiple mouses and back then marketing for "gaming" mice was expensive, unlike todays market where you can get amazing mice for 60-90$)
    Until recently about literally 1 week ago I started Claw griping and it was Day and Night difference ( my hand did get a bit fatigue because it was not use to it) but my aim was so much better and precise, my tracking was better as well and my micro adjustments with vertical movement is soo much better. I really recommend trying Claw grip, it will definitely be out of your comfort zone but it is so worth in my opinion

    At the end of the day, knowing how to grip a mice is all personal preference. I am a TF2 player that has played a few seasons of HL and only used palm grip and never really had the problem with it. If you like the grip you have that's good! Just make sure you don't use a different grip just because that person (like a pro) is using that one grip style. And don't be one of those people who literally put their mouse upside down.

    I was using the ec2-a for a long time with palm grip, I changed over to the g305, I found that my grip style didn’t actually change at all it was just the was no contact on the mouse with my palm which because of the small size meant I could now micro aim which I use more for recoil control so maybe it’s more to do with mouse shape and size rather then grip being any sort of issue, your grip is natural but the mouse isn’t so I’m thinking that it’s more to do with finding the right mouse that fits your grip rather then changing your grip, I’m ordering the rail over the weekend as I’m intrigued to try a unique shape, I wonder how long it will be until anyone can form their own shell.

    I swap between 1-3-1 claw grip for flicking and 1-2-2 palm claw/finger tip for comfort and tracking. Beyond doing close-close mid range flicks, good 180s, and tracking I think one real 'world' game scenario worth practicing is hitting fast medium-long range microflicks because it's something you actually have to put time into and can separate those who are lazy but have good game sense/aim and a machine doing long range 1 taps. So I think it's worth looking into the ergonomics some pros use, like rapha with his mouse close to his body and diagonal with his fairly high 21cm360 or someone who plays further into their desk on a sens like 43cm360.
