Bought this the day it came out, still have the single and the album. My favorite band of all time, real musicians that changed the times. The Doors wished they were the Stranglers.
There isn't a single Strangler's song that I don't like. What a classic!
What, even "Love 30"? The b-side of 'Golden Brown'.
Brad, if this is your first time listening to The Stranglers, you are starting on an epic musical journey, sir. This band is the real thing. A pair of great songs to check out from this era of the band are "(Get A) Grip (on Yourself)" and "Hanging Around" from their debut album, Rattus Norvegicus. They also do a scorching cover of Dionne Warwick's "Walk on By" that is absolutely legendary. Enjoy!
Hanging around a true classic....sex pistols or the stranglers give me the stranglers every time
(Get A) Grip is one of the greatest songs ever written.
Plus ''Down In The Sewer'' for me.
@@motionoutoftime Walk on By is the best version of that song, Hanier Family on UA-cam is brilliant. Too many songs to mention but my favourite was Bitching.
Dave's keyboard are what set The Stranglers apart from the other bands who got roped into the punk bracket. The Damned also used a keyboard to some extent, but it was never an integral part of the song in the way Dave Greenfield played it.
Agree but also JJ’s bass guitar. RIP Dave Greenfield and Jet Black
@@davidmeikle7496absolutely JJ's base is a very distinctive sound of the Stranglers.
Aww, love The Stranglers 😊 specially their version of Walk on By, that’s a good one.
One of my all time favourites 👍
I was born in 85 with immigrant parents from an island in the middle of the Indian ocean. I was about 10 years old in the mid 90s and bought the best of the stranglers as my first album from a outdoor fete. Because of golden brown but found so many more amazing songs. They give me a fuzzy nostalgic feeling I can't explain even though they were before my time xxx
This epitomises why reaction videos are so compelling. To be able to see the facial expressions of someone experiencing for the first time, the things that have been, for so long, the soundtrack to our lives, is almost like hearing it for the first time again ourselves.
Thank you for doing this.
First Live band I ever seen I was 14 years old, they were supported that night by the Skids May 1978 Glasgow Apollo.
I saw The Skids at City Hall Newcastle 78 or 79 can't remember now. Punishment of Luxury, was the support. The Skids rocked the house.... literally. Everyone was dancing, going mental. I was in the upstairs gallery, I thought it was going to collapse. Great gig.
Lucky You! I came to the Stranglers late, but love them from top to bottom. Their musical chops are unbeatable. Just the Best!!!!
Yeah, the Skids, they supported everyone. Still some listenable songs too.
You just keep getting more and more sophisticated 😊
The Stranglers trolling the BBC....again. In this the guy singing (Jean Jacques Brunel) isn't the guy who sings this song, that's the guitar player (Hugh Cornwall). Top of the Pops made artists mime and pre punk era the artistes went along with it, but many punk bands resented it and would make it obvious they were being forced to mime and make a mockery of it. The first time The Stranglers performed on TOTP, they mimed the track without strings on the guitar or bass.
I think it's a show from Belgium, maybe, but not BBC. Top Pops is an old show too.
@@jum101sell Nope, Top of the Pops sign in the background. And a masterclass in trolling from the Stranglers!
@@simongodfrey3765 Nope, it's Top Pop not Top of the pops. Even says so in the description. There is also the first take somewhere on youtube where they take the piss even more ua-cam.com/video/-U44P4u8oQY/v-deo.html
@simongodfrey3765 It's Dutch tv called Top Pop. They were not happy with this so asked the band to do it again, the other version almost makes this one seem serious lol
I saw them live a year ago -- they are still great!
love it they not even pretending to be playing live
Yes, and if I’m not wrong the lead singer is not the singer of 5he song, just talking the p#ss.
There's another video I've seen out there where they've all swapped instruments. No attempt to lip sync - No fucks given !!
Can you lip read JJ?
@@andyf2837 I’m not particularly good at lip reading, so not 100% sure on the 3rd and 5th word of his interpretation of the chorus, but he appears to be say “Fuck off you, you silly cunt.”. 🤣
Lol..they did like subtly pointing out they were miming 👍 that's JJ Burnel miming to Hugh Cornwells ( guitarists) voice..if you lip read he says something totally different to no more heroes 👍 you must listen to their cover of walk on by tho...its just plain and simple a work of art 😁
Note Dave Greenfield's keyboard playing. He is soloing all the way through each songs. This guy was by far the most talented musician in the band!
Soundtrack of my youth.
Shit I'm old!
You young people are lucky. Us old farts had to wait all day for all the cool stuff to happen in real time. You lot can get it all at once.
I think this song was the first Stranglers song I heard.
I was fifteen and they performed this on BBC Top of the Pops
as part of the punk explosion that happened in the UK.
It is one of those songs I still know all the words to
as they are so clearly enunciated
and sums up my generations nihilist attitude to "heroes".
Great tune.
Check out Peaches by them
Looks like JJB is miming as lead singer!
Before this appearance they were told they could not play live so they just messed around ,I seen this band many times as a young kid of 16 or so
I love how they're f'ing around with the playback, how they're making so much fun out of a stupid producer decision.
The lame miming was their objection at not been able to play live in this show
You want a good freak out then check out Down In The Sewer.
Great reaction ... minimalist ... just right 💙.
More Stranglers!!
Brad.. same band - walk on by, the Dionne Warwick classic. Do it bro, you won't be disappointed.
JJ's bass is so dirty 😁😁😁😁
The hero's never fight or write for crappy ppl!! JS
BBC who did Top of the Pops, had their own orchestra, and so bands appearing weren't allowed to play live or the orchestra would go on strike. 😅
This is from a Dutch tv show called Top Pop.
@MajorLeap-ww6bf OK thanks....but comment is still correct 👌 👍
@Shaun.ALAW. Yeah it is, by the way top pop were not happy so asked them to do another take and they hammed it up even more it makes this one look almost serious lol
Lad don't over think it they are just a fucking great band
This was (Top of the Pops) a tv show that it felt like everyone in England watched on a Thursday night, most bands had to mime on it, which led to some bands just taking the piss doing their performance.
It's NOT 'TOTP'. I believe it's a Dutch show,or similar. Their actual TOTP performance of this song is far better & not as bad "lip-syncing". By the way,it's JJB miming Cornwell's lead vocal.
@@normandavidtidiman9918 I think you're right, it looks like AVRO's Top Pop, presented by Ad Visser.
I really only listen to the cover version by the violent femmes. But the original is so very good
PEACHES!!!!!
The Doors on speed.
They didn't seem quite as pedestrian in the 80s, they're almost easy listening muzak nowadays!
The Stranglers sound is unique.🐀
Using JJ on the Base as a lead Guitar and backing singing (some times lead but not Heroes that's Hugh's voice).🐀
Daves fantastic Keyboard skills (RIP f u Covid).🐀
Jet Blacks Drumming (RIP probably another f u Covid).🐀
Hugh's distinctive voice and rhythm Guitar.🐀
This made them instantly recognisable.🐀
Their early work was very dark and creepy for the time. 🐀
Stranglers taking the piss out top of pops who demanded miming
hugh sings this song not Jean Jaques
This is SSOOOOOO 80s
Except it’s from 1977.
@@Drinckx2 Still sounds very 80s
@@Ninang363 Then they were ahead of their time.
So according to this performance, the Stranglers will remembered as a bunch of clowns instead.
Dont think this was on TOTPs tho..might have been Top pop or some european music show
Top 10 of British bands, of all time.
It's the same kind of message as Wake Up by Rage Against The Machine. "Whatever happened to those heroes?" - the system killed them. It's got that anger because their heroes were destroyed, the same way RATM were talking about the fact that MLK was murdered by the FBI using a local KKK-type guy working in co-operation with the police. Look at what happens to the heroes, this is why you should be angry.
A little bit of an embarrassing "performance". I can only assume they wanted to play live, but wasn't allowed. Bass player Jean Jaques Burnel miming Hugh Cornwell's lead vocal & then everyone starts acting stupid (except keyboard player Greenfield).
Heres your prog punk lol
It was the late 70's, they were a British New Wave/Punk band... there was no way that they would ever mime to their own song.... Hugh and JJ were just...Nope!
The Stranglers started out as a punk band , but were too talented as musicians to stick with that genre.
Actually the Stranglers became something else just a couple of years after this. The same but different... But probably more like what you are into these days...
JUST LIKE NOTHING ON EARTH!! ua-cam.com/video/MUVqTS16uWY/v-deo.html
Check it out!
The Stranglers have kept on changing though... Never stopped!
IMHO
