  • Featuring the authors Robert Lawson, Director, O’Neil Center for Global Markets and Freedom Cox School of Business, Southern Methodist University; Benjamin Powell, Professor of Economics at Rawls College of Business, Texas Tech University; and Matt Kibbe, President, Free the People; moderated by Ian Vásquez, Director, Center for Global Liberty and Prosperity, Cato Institute.
Socialism has failed every time it has been tried, yet it still appeals to parts of the American public that have little or no experience with it. Irreverent but honest economists Robert Lawson and Benjamin Powell will describe what they saw when they visited real-life examples of socialism in Cuba, North Korea, and Venezuela and other countries that are living with the socialist legacy. Using anecdotes and informed by scholarship, they will explain why socialism is often catastrophic, why Sweden is not an example of socialism, and why many of the claims of socialist politicians in America are so wrong-headed. Matt Kibbe will describe how young Americans’ views on socialism have evolved in recent years.

@@comrademax5302 The first part of Capital when Marx show he knows nothing about what is value, one of the main mistakes of Marx is he tought value depends of the working time to develop a good, and that is a big mistake, value is subjective and it depends of the marginal utility of an economic good. If value was objective you would be able to do economic calculation in a planned economy, and that is not possible because there is no private property or free markets so there is no price system so you cannot make economi c calculation. In consecuence planned economic is a failure.

When I was 20 I tried to discuss socialism with socialists under economic and political science viewpoints, to show them socialism was a total failure. And everytime I pointed out to the socialists I met the utter failure of socialism everywhere, they just smiled and kept silent.
When I was 40 I made a "discovery". I "discovered" that it is wrong trying to discuss socialism in economic or political science terms, because socialism is in fact a religion. A religion which produces genocides, but being a religion, socialism does not need logic, all it needs is faith. So it is useless trying to show to socialists the utter failure of socialism everywhere, because they have faith and that is enough for them.
When I reached 60, I made another "discovery". Socialism is a mental disease, which, in its mild manifestations turns its victims into intellectually dishonest people (say, like British historian Eric Hobsbawn). The problem is that it takes just a very short step to transform an intellectually dishonest people into actual pickpockets, bank robbers, drug dealers, kidnappers and straight murderers (which they are).
And being a mental disease, the infected victims think about socialism 24/7.
And socialism is a threat to civilization.
You guys must go to every high school in the US and explain what socialism is actually to them.
The socialists do three things: when they are not busy mass murdering people, they are lying all the time, and while they busy themselves trafficking drugs, robbing people, etc.they are permanently sowing discord among societies. And since the French Revolution (which destroyed France, by the way) they have become good at sowing discord. And in the USA they have been scoring huge successes by attaining control of the media and of the academia, and this is why you see kids attracted to socialism. They are attracted because they listen to teachers telling them how beautiful socialism is and how ugly capitalism is. And when they read newspapers they read journalists that have all been coopted by the left, and they also keep hammering that socialism is beautiful and capitalism is bad, and little by little they are infecting the American youth. And not content with that, the socialists strive to destroy the American society from within, destroying the family, by promoting gaysism, and the widespread dissemination of drugs, etc.
Again socialism is a threat to civilization and you guys must start a cruzade in the American schools to educate the youth otherwise in a matter of one or two generations the socialist will seize the power in the USA. Never understimate them.

The fact is that the Democratic Party to a large extent and the Republicans to a lesser but still significantly seek power and say and do anything to serve that goal. It was very, very grey and drab compared to West Germany and West Berlin. Also there were some very cheap products such as cocktails at stands on street corners for $.25. Bread was cheap. But I also saw empty grocery stores. I saw horrible environmental pollution of rivers. Every product above the most basic was either very expensive or not available. There were also police and soldiers everywhere. I was very happy when that day was over and out of that grey concrete police state.

The guy in the audience talking about the "millions Capitalism has killed" is a fool, and I'm sick of hearing that fatuous argument. When we talk about the 100 million Socialism/Communism has killed, we're not talking about soldiers who died on the battlefield in war against Socialist/Communists countries. We're talking about 100 million people who were systematically executed by the state because they didn't embrace - or simply didn't fit neatly into - the Socialist/Communist ideology of _their own_ country. No Capitalist society has ever systematically executed people for the same reasons.
It is of course unfair to Socialist/Communist countries to add up the total number of enemy soldiers killed via warfare with Socialist/Communist countries, because war is something that can happen to any country and many soldiers have died via warfare with Capitalist countries. But the 100 million that people talk about has nothing to do with warfare or 'accidental' deaths resulting from Socialist/Communist policies - if we included those deaths the total would be even higher.
It's utterly nonsensical to try and claim that Capitalism has resulted in more murder than Socialism/Communism. No matter what dishonest methods one uses to try and produce a figure of "Capitalist murder", it will always be lower than the total aggregate number of murders by Socialism/Communism for the simple fact that no Capitalist country has ever systematically slaughtered non-Capitalist individuals as a matter of policy.

The better the rewards the more earnestly they work. Simple. One in a thousand people work only to help the mobs, and even they would no longer be so motivated in socialism because they would soon realize that their work would not actually be helping anyone who needs it or deserves it. Here is the part that these comrades would really like about them both: we who don't like it would soon be arrested in the middle of the night, along with anyone who complained about our arrests, never to be seen or heard from again. It seems we are close because that will soon be true. May God have mercy on us all.

That is partly it, but even if a country was made entirely of altruistic selfless people; socialism still couldn't work because it corrupts the price mechanism. Prices contain all information in a supply chain and affects order of preference.
      ua-cam.com/video/zkPGfTEZ_r4/v-deo.html
No person on earth knows how to make something as simple as a pencil as the complexities of the requirements to build a pencil grow exponentially as the supply chain grows; but prices allow the division of labor to create them in abundance with a sort of higher order intelligence. But put a bureaucrat in charge is assuming they know how to mine, log, farm, ship; and not only do that but know how to build all the equipment to do so, and in turn the industries around those equipment as well. Then even further have sort of omniscience to know if wood should be allocated to pencils, or furniture or anything else and foresight to tell if disruptive technologies might affect the demand for pencils.
Having the price mechanism aggregates all those complexities into something so simple, a child can understand. Socialism obscures the complexity into something that a god could not grasp.

Do some research on JP Morgan and the Big Money Trust who established the Federal Reserve. You'll be surprised just how socialist our Federal Reserve and the big money behind it really is. Thing is, US citizens have never been taught the true identities of these individuals who hid behind progressive "Capitalism", which is the opposite of free market. They were pro centralization, pro no competition, and pro manipulation of the markets. What is so funny is that people look back on them and say, "Ew, they're a great example of Capitalists." Except, they were highly connected to the Fabian Socialist scene and many of them funded the Communist Revolution. But of course, you're not taught that in your text book. Your just taught to hate Capitalism, which they conveniently tie to Democracy. Nope. I'm not anti-capitalist. I'm anti-socialist progressive capitalism. The kind the US has experienced through the banking system since 1913, which has effectively f'd our country up and created so much hatred of the system. No shit. It's Socialism, my friend. Just disgusting. And if you think I'm twisting things up, do some digging. It's crazy what you can discover when you stop allowing our socialist school system and news media to spoon feed you garbage. I honestly don't trust the right or the left. Here it is: "Communism is for us not a state of affairs which is to be established, an ideal to which reality [will] have to adjust itself. We call communism the real movement which abolishes the present state of things. The conditions of this movement result from the premises now in existence" (German Ideology).

Money should be disconnected from work. Because work is not what provides value. It is just an overhead cost to reach the end product.
If you dig a whole and fill it back up with a spoon; that takes more work than someone who writes a line of computer code for a robot to manufacture something. But digging and filling holes with spoons does not have consumer demand. Money is a way to measure which people would prefer.
In fact, the less labor something takes to accomplish the same ends, generally results in more value because it frees resources to be deployed elsewhere. I guarantee 18th century farmers worked harder than almost any American today; doesn't mean they created more value. But as those hard working jobs were displaced by technology, it created easier and more abundant value elsewhere.

That is a very excellent question, Alan! Here is the answer:
      1. Because shareholders pay $ for their shares, gambling that the company will thrive so the shares increase in value.
      2. Because the $ paid for the shares enriches the company with capital to invest and become even more profitable.
      3. Because state-run companies tend to lose more $ than they make (eg: USPS) 'cause the workers have no skin in the game.
      4. Because people are willing to work hard to achieve excellence ONLY if they see that the reward is worthwhile.
      5. Because maybe 1 out of a thousand people might be willing to devote all their hard work to the mob, but
      6. even they would soon give that up as they saw that no one actually gets helped because of the corruption.
      7. When all the people are poor the whole country becomes poor; shithole poor.
      8. And if the citizens have no arms to revolt against the government, the rulers quickly become very corrupt; even evil.
      9. And that is why socialism always leads to communism, which always turns even the most formerly prosperous countries
into shitholes of hell on earth. Once you reach a certain point on this treacherous path, there is no return. You're done for.
Now, there are several hundred exceedingly wealthy and powerful men in the world who truly are evil, and intend to crash the world so they can control it better than they do now. And they have made quite a bit of headway in their plans. They are so wealthy they don't even touch money or carry it. They simply use their positions of power. They have servants who take care of the lowly details. But those are not the men that Socialism could ever touch. They are the ones who have managed to convince your generation that socialism is a fine thing, and will bring about fairness! Alan, the world has never been fair, and will never be fair, unless everyone is held down under the jackboots of Communist thuggery. Do you really want that? You don't think that people should be able to make for themselves a better life? better than yesterday? Maybe even better than the lives of people who are not willing to work for it? Should we all just wait to be given whatever moldy schlock the corrupt bureaucrats are willing to hand out? And of course they would take as much of anything we've got as they can carry away, just to make things fair, and it will all rot in warehouses, because of the rampant corruption of a government whose people are not free to rebel.
Socialists will foolishly go after the wealthies 1% of the population who are successful; people in 'our world who make money, and who mostly will not be able to hide or to defend themselves. Socialism kills the geese that lay the golden eggs, and the golden eggs cease to be be laid, and the whole society becomes poor; shithole poor. So, you may yet get your wish! Where every one is poor, and the men who made our prosperity happen will be in work camps shoveling shit, or maybe just shot dead. Be careful what you wish for.
Do you think that there is just a certain amount of money floating around, and the privileged few just grab it? Grow up!
Because the 1% you hear about from the media have mostly earned their money. What should you pay a man who can take over a failing company and turn it around? You should pay him enough that he will do it for you! Otherwise, he'll go to the competition!
Alan, free stuff might bring a moment of happiness, but it is by fulfilling our responsibilities that our lives have meaning.
Are you sure that you love the poor? Do you want what is best for them? Maybe you just hate the rich and want to knock them down and take their $ and watch them become poor. Would you love them then? No, you would still hold a grudge and hate them as much as ever, maybe more.
But they know how to work and find success, and they might turn around and build themselves up again!
Well, you can't have that, now can you? So, off to the work camps with them all!
But that is tricky if the citizens own guns! So how do you get their guns away? You would first need to get control of the media to convince the masses of nothing but lies and propaganda. (All US major media is owned by a handful of men exceedingly wealthy men; men who will still have power in the new regime.) take away the freedom of speech, so they can't complain as I am doing now.
Decades of polluting the food and water with heavy metals, pharmaceuticals, etc., has kept the people down. And, of course, dumb down our education so we can't learn HOW TO THINK.
Then rabble-rouse the masses to feel that they have been oppressed, and pick the most successful citizens as the oppressors!
And, there you are! Civil war. Every family divided, every denomination divided, every school, every institution divided and conquered. "Well", you say, "good riddance to all that unfairness!" You are a dangerous idiot. Even the poor in our country have a good life: cell phones, a car, tv, cheap food, Goodwill stores in every town, and equal opportunity to improve their lives. But if you are willing to destroy the best, most fair country ever, turn it into a shithole to make sure no one has any more than anyone else, whether they deserve it or not, then our country could have no greater enemy than you.

If the two terms refer to exactly the same thing, then there is no need to have two terms... also, (2) what term DO you use for all those nations that respect property rights and market forces, but do have political freedom, and programs to cover health insurance, control pollution, truth in media, etc. as the Northern European nations and Japan have?

My best understanding, is that Socialism refers to the economic theory, and Communism refers more to the political theory and method of achieving their dream state.
As far as your second question, I'd state that the Euro countries and Japan are all Capitalist nations, but they have very large social welfare programs. The fundamental distinction being that they still follow all the rules of Capitalism in terms of free market and strong private property rights, and true socialist countries do not have private property rights.
This is more my understanding of the subject rather than absolute fact, and I hope it helps make it easier to understand :)
