  • The spring tree hunt begins! Looking for Tamarack! Did I find one? I'm also fine tuning my tree identification skills. Bare with me! I'm trying to move from generalized names, to specification of sub species. I'll get there.

I am glad you saved some of the soil that the tree grew in. The beneficial bacteria in the soil will get the roots off to a great start.

Fingers make a good way to get the soil into the roots. Marysol firing in her fingers into the roots to get out the air pockets and get her little one off to a great start. Superb video from start to finish. As Monty Burns would say: Excellent!

Tamarack, take some cuttings. Great to see the geese in flight. Like Red Skeleton would say: Duck! Here comes a flock of them. Nice rocks for your collection to take a few samples.

I get some cool rocks when I run the crushers and screeners! We get some really neat rocks out of the gravel pits!

You found your tree. Excellent! I see so many different varieties of trees in your woods. To bad you could not make a penjing that way. Under growth and all. I noticed that when people make penjings the forest is really not copied that way. Would be cool if you could do one.

Perhaps I will try one day! I still would like a Tamarack forest. Once I get that, we'll go from there!

Great variety in that area! 1:16 between the pine & poplar looks like might be a fir. I have several Larch bonsai that I've been working on for many years. Collected several & grew some from seed. When I moved across the country I could only take so many & donated a some to a friend. Unfortunately I lost one of the 2 I grew from seed. Looks like a spruce you collected?

Yes we have Balsam Fir here. And yes, it was a Spruce I dug up, not what I had intended on, but I couldn't pass it up! I have been trying to grow some Tamarack from seed, I got one to survive till it started forming a bud, then it dampened off.

Well, you might just have found a better spot than James @BonsaiByTheSea! I will be out collecting this weekend with KW Bonsai, and the following weekend with Toronto Bonsai.. Maybe the week after at Frost Bite Bonsai?? 😂

You know how to find money in the woods, right, Marysol. You look for a doe with 2 bucks. A bit a levity for this great walk in the woods and tree tutorial.

Must have been something the breeze whispered as it went through the forest!
