  • In this video I explain and demonstrate how to install new piston rings in a Yamaha Wolverine or Warrior 350. (both the warrior and wolverine use the same top end)
    Although not explained in the video, their are many different measurements you can and should take if your top end appears to be worn out. Some of these measurement's include: piston skirt diameter, piston to cylinder clearance, piston ring gap, wrist pin, wrist pin bore, and much more which can be found in a Yamaha Warrior or Wolverine 350 service manual.
    Please leave any questions you have in the comment section down below, as I would be more than happy to answer them!

    I’ve swap of the piston crankshaft, timing chain and top end with a big bear 400 and keep the original piston and the gears because they are geared higher than the big bear on my wolvy. I’ve also swapped the carb with a warrior oem carb and just cut away the throttle cable outside liner to move the cable nut back to make it work with the carb. Don’t worry about replacing the oil cooler. Just use 20w 50 oil to keep the motor run cooler. I never had any problems while riding it about once or twice a week for 6 years now. The top speed on it is 73mph from using gps and that plenty enough speed for me flying through the woods.

    The exhaust studs get red hot after a 10 min ride. Warn the up and then quench the studs with penetraiting fluid. Normally, they will come free

    Any footage of setting timing or adjusting the valves?

    • @everythingmechanical_yt
      @everythingmechanical_yt  3 роки тому +1

      Not any actual footage of me doing it but the valves just need to be set to spec with a feeler Guage and the mark on the timing gear needs to line up with the mark on the head while the piston is at top dead center

    When I go to take the sprocket off for the timing chain it just spins whatever the chain is connected to. How do I get it locked in place so I can brake the nut lose?

    • @everythingmechanical_yt
      @everythingmechanical_yt  2 роки тому +2

      You need to remove the cover or pull starter on older models and hold the bolt securing the flywheel and remove the nut holding the timing chain sprocket

    I’m glad I found your video. I have a 97 warrior. I just got it going and found that the gasket between the upper and lower is leaking oil. The machine runs great so I don’t think I have any other issues. I’ve never done this before, but I am willing to take on the task. It looks like I am able to do this without removing the motor which is great. I saw that I can get a top end kit which has new rings and a new cylinder, piston rings and everything. Will I need to do anything with the valves when I start taking this apart? Does the parts come apart easily with the engine mounted to the machine? I appreciate the video and your responses.

      That's awesome! Everything comes apart easily with the engine on the machine and you don't need to do anything with the valves aside from removing and reinslling the timing chain. Unless you need a new jug or piston, I would advise against those kits. I haven't tried them although I would guess that the quality of them isn't the same as oem yamaha parts. I would definitely change the piston rings out with oem ones since you'll have it open, hone the cylinder, measure all specs and see what needs to be replaced at that point. What I did on my warrior was buy an oem used jug and piston off ebay since a new one would be so expensive (obviously ones that aren't worn out of spec) let me know if this helps

      @@everythingmechanical_yt if the cylinder is in good shape along with the piston, I will change just the rings. Do I need to hone the cylinder if the piston and cylinder are in good shape?

    • @everythingmechanical_yt
      @everythingmechanical_yt  3 роки тому

      @@kevineilola4616 I'd say that's a good call. The proper way to do it is to hone it any time you remove the piston even if you re use the same rings since the rings wear into the piston and seal in position of the rings. The quad will still run fine if you don't, but the rings will seal better if you hone it, that way it breaks in properly. A hone is pretty cheap and it actually isn't too hard to do so I would definitely recommend doing so

      Sometimes, just re tourqeing the head will stop the base gasket from leaking

      Yes. Have yoh gotten the cam sprocket and chain tensioner off? If so then you should be able to roll the chain off of the cam sprocket.
