It seems fairly obvious that this is the first step on the road that will lead to a tax on internet access for the purposes of the BBC revenue.
Weird that Tim Davies is suddenly all for this when previously the BBC's stand was the fact that not everyone in the UK has access to fast broadband so the TV licence was a necessity.

This is not to benefit users, this is so the BBC can hang on to the licence model for just that little bit longer. They will keep the 'live' aspect for as long as possible as it keep the money coming in. Just watch proper catch-up and ditch your licence.

The cynic in me says this is a way for the BBC to say "you've been watching live TV". People who don't pay for a licence already have streaming through broadband. A planner is irrelevant because you don't have to plan what you want to watch.

The word in the article was replicate not replace which is a fancy word for duplicate. The reason the other channels aren't complaining is the pool of advertising money is limited so if the Beeb started advertising their own share is likely to go down.

As budgets get tighter, disposable income drops etc. Why should we prioritise broadband connections for watching tv over … let’s say … heating or food for example? The job centre and jobs market already EXPECTS us to have broadband and a car, some people don’t want or can’t afford such things.

We have old copper landlines being turned off in the UK by the end of December 2025 too and customers who haven't already been transferred to VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) will be soon. Ever more TV is via the Internet streaming services too, you no longer need an aerial for free TV or a satellite dish for Sky TV so I agree eventually broadcast TV will end. The advantage is it's cheaper just maintaining one system rather than three and it's often easier to install, but the bad side is all the eggs are in one basket, if the Internet goes down you lose all services.

I only watch thrpught broadband now. My flat has sky sockets only, and i did have that for a while. Now im licence free i have a roku and everything comes through that. Yes it can be annoying when internet goes down, but at least its still there to pick up from where it went off.
Im surprised that the bbc are collaborating with the other channels and will allow iplayer stuff to be viewed. (That was from an article i read earlier today, how true it is we will have to see!) Although will still need a tv licence for the live stuff.
I sadly agree with others that this is going to end up an extra charge on top of our broadband bills. 😒

This is a con, first of all it will cost everyone to be able to watch TV the price of internet, a monthly cost some of the poorest can't afford. Then the new TV sets will have it built in, meaning those of us who do not watch wont be able to say we can't recive it on our TV. Right now I can delete BBC apps for instance, I doubt very much the same can be done with this. So they will find a clause that will eith make you buy a liceince wether you watch or not or put a tax on the internet. Either way, we'll end up paying for crap TV we don't want or need. Screw the BBC!

Here's the crucial thing I've been wondering about with this new Freely app; will it automatically start playing Live TV instantly as soon as you open the app, instead of taking you to a home menu to make a selection from on demand content, like with ITV X for example. That'd be a way they could force all users of Freely to have a TV license to use the app, even if they just wanted to view VOD content exclusively.
It'd be good if they added an option in this new app, or all the UK catchup/freeview apps to disable all live content if you decided you don't want a TV license, but that's probably never going to happen.

It seems unlikely to me that broadcast TV over the airwaves would ever be switched off. The infrastructure is in place and just about the only costs it attracts are those to do with maintenance. Also, to put all TV on the internet will require expensive capacity upgrades. There would also be the risk of internet outages, local, regional or even national caused, perhaps by hostile interests and no backup if broadcasting over the airwaves had ceased.

Some people say it will be more likely in the mid 2030s but seeing as they are launching full IPTV next year, that gives them 6 years to roll it out and get the "majority" across to it. The bbc's attempt to compete with sky stream - live tv without an aerial.
Surley if its all broadcast over the internet they can put their content behind a paywall - like bt sport, sky sport, netflix & prime do.

There are also people with low data limits on their Internet. So would not be able to watch much.

So if I buy a new TV, I will be forced to have the apps (Freely, Freeview etc). Even if I don't want them you will not be able to remove them. So then you could be forced into the TV Licence. As thus is probably the way the TV Licence will change and we will all have to pay with a media/Internet tax.
Even if you do not watch TV werher on demand or broadcast TV and only read Epub books or only use it for emails, you could still be liable for media tax.

you can bypass the Smart TV apps situation by using a commercial display instead, most still support HDMI inputs and can be used without all the junkware/spyware that comes on them

You cant get free broadband so the BBC license fee will never be abolished! If you dont have expensive broadband you cant get TV.The cheapest broadband will be at least 4 times the present license fee.

Yet another streaming service why can't they just be part of the Pluto TV platform its owned by Channel 5's parent company. Exists on all platforms.
Pluto tv is free, ad supported IP TV. and currently the BBC has channels on the service with 4 Fast channels UKTV Play laughs, Heroes, full throttle and uncovered. Maybe Freely will just be a wrapper for the Pluto TV service.

BBc live only through the internet is a backdoor to putting TV licence charge on every internet connection.

Well it's not free as to watch anything live you will have to pay the bbc which is something I won't be doing. To be honest I don't watch catch up tv much as I'd rather watch movies and play video games.

No doubt the annual licence fee will be scrapped, and the charge added to your broadband bill.

And if you are 75 and have dementia, and do not have an internet connection, and wouldn't know what to do with it even if they did, this would be an extra monthly expense that many cannot afford, so it's not free anyway.

Haven't watched any terrestrial broadcast BBC content created since the early 00's. Think I cut the cord way back in 2003 / 04 because it had become so bad.
