During watching your vid, I had thought of a sinister master-plan of embarrassing the so-called TV inspector sales people: On my router I could put a redirect for any and all BBC sites that serves up a local page stating, "Warning! Your ISP or Admin has BLOCKED this site for far-right extremism, pseudoscience and hate-speech". I can then leave a pinned site (the only one, leaving the rest of the Firefox's default page blank) to the BBC website so they think, "Ah, caught you out" as I tell them I can't get BBC, so hopefully they click the link and the message pops up. I can do similar things for all other "TV" related sites as such and just change the accusation accordingly. That way they'd defo know I don't watch TV. I could either use a router with DD-WRT or I can get into the Android-like subsystem of my portable mobile-broadband router and add this as yet another functionality I've added (If I can figure out how to stop the browser updating the URL so it clearly shows the BBC's address in the address bar)
Why don't we all just put, Return to sender on the unopened letters and stick them in the post box. That way they pay twice for postage and get all their rubbish back.

Cancel DD if that’s how you pay, ignore ALL letters, let them waste time and money sending out letters ! I’ve not had licence for 6 yrs so far I’ve notified them after 2 yrs this year I can’t be arsed and will await a visit so I can have some fun with them 😎😁
I use to pay for my TV licence through paypoint every month and a few times i was late with the payment because it didn't line up with my wage so i would be 1 or 3 days late the threatening letters they send out made me decide to get ride of the licence and go online exclusively i now have more money in my pocket and i always have something that I like watching.
Optic Axis: No there is never a prepaid return envelope, just the letter with varied threats (ie: you haven't replied, are you in on *date*, you STILL haven't bought one, you can be prosecuted, blah, blah...) The wholesale presumption of guilt with the intimation you MUST go out of your way to prove otherwise really is the most insidious & cockamamie aspect of this whole situation. No other company requires you to do this to prove innocence!! I don't have a license because I don't NEED one, no TV, but I still get the letters. They clearly feel justified even more nowadays targeting EVERY household in the UK, due to the proliferation of mobile phones, computers, laptops or tablets, all of which could potentially be used to "watch" live broadcasts. They think they have everyone by the short and curlies. I returned copies of their letters unstamped on to the TVL address to make them pay for delivery (why should I pay for a stamp?) with scrawled messages all over it ("what part of NO LICENSE REQUIRED are you still failing to understand? I actually got one of these letters today. It said the household is under investigation!! I couldn’t believe it, I got so scared I felt like I was going to shit myself; so I used the letter as toilet paper haha
When you ring them up and cancel, you're not "exempt for 2 years". You remain exempt from the TV licence, for as long as you don't watch/record live TV, and/or watch/download BBC I-Player.

Always great to hear your pep talks. And it is true about not needing live broadcasts. We thought we'd never do it, did a trial run and put the aerial away. I didn't notice a thing, neither did the daughters. The wife did have to look elsewhere for a tiny amount of programs, but that was no problem whatsoever. Do it, cancel the licence. Plus, it gives you an immense moral superiority over these disgusting, vile thugs and gangsters at Capita and the BBC.

Having had letters from them monthly for the best part of ten years now, Strangely, I've not received one in the last couple of months.... Might have had one lost in the post, I suppose... I would hate to think that they have given up and don't want to waste their money on me anymore lol.
There's no actual investigations going on behind the scenes, these letters are all computer generated and carefully designed and worded to scare people into paying up. Eventually a list of addresses might get emailed out to the door knockers but that's about it. Chilli posted something the other day stating that Capita spent around £7 million on sending these letters out last year.
it may say 7 million but you can easy work out it has to be double that for letter and envelope costs etc. but one thing we don't work out with number of letters sent out how many go to the same person over and over.
I was a licence free over 75 for about 5 months when they changed their minds, now they want me to start paying again. 3 reminders so far. I haven't answered any. I was thinking of returning the next one marked "moved to nursing home" would that foil them?

It might be worth mentioning in your next video how TV retailers effectively "grass" on their customers by passing their details to the licensing people. I have been party to this underhanded practice.

The Communications (Television Licensing) Regulations 2004 (as amended), states that you need to be covered by a TV Licence if you: · Watch or record programmes as they’re being shown on TV on any channel · Watch or stream programmes live on an online TV Service (such as ITV Hub, All4, UA-cam, Amazon Prime Video, Now TV, Sky Go etc) · Download or watch any BBC programmes on iPlayer This applies to any device you use, including a TV, desktop computer, laptop, mobile phone, tablet, games console, digital box or DVD/VHS recorder. If a video cassette recorder, a DVD recorder or a colour television is used, whether separately or together, a Colour TV Licence is required. The use of a television as a monitor solely for computer/video games does not need a TV Licence. If you watch or record live TV programmes as they're being shown on TV or download or watch BBC programmes on iPlayer live, catch up or on demand, you need to be covered by a TV Licence. However, if you don’t do either of these, please let me know. I will then make sure our records are changed to show you do not need a licence. One of our Visiting Officers may visit your home to check that you are not watching or recording live TV programmes as they're being shown on TV or downloading or watching BBC programmes on iPlayer live, catch up or on demand. Also you can watch TV on a battery powered device (portable TV or laptop/iPad) that is NOT connected to a plug in aerial or power socket if you have a TV licence for your main residence. So students using iPlayer on a battery powered device are fine if their parents have a TV licence.
@@PooleAcademyofWingChun As I understand it watching someone doing a live steam from their bedroom nattering about how they paint their nails or whatever is perfectly legal without a licence. They are not TV stations, it is only if you are watching a live stream on UA-cam of a live TV program , such as some TV news bulletins such as the American NTD . Of course the BBC are deliberately not clear on this so they can con people into thinking you need a licence for UA-cam whereas in reality this is a very niche area 99.999 % UA-cam no licence needed.
Just been reading about the TV license and according to them, they say less than 2% of people only watch catch up services (thus not needing a TV licence). In this day and age of catch up/streaming, I find that percentage hard to believe 😅
i had a funny line when i cancelled my tv licence - asking if how i watch tv will change in the future there was NO mention of 2 years nor anyone visiting at any time. i plain and simple said i do not watch live tv broadcast and don't use iplayer and want to cancel and it was so,, I AM GOD, and it was good. I told them I wanted a refund since i paid whole year so no direct debit. and was told form on website or we can send you one. so waiting for form the website is a waste of time to cancel and is very hard to find the cancel option
Whilst I agree in principle, why should anyone have to? I don't have to tell Sky or Amazon Prime that I don't require them biannually. I don't have to declare that I still don't need a gun licence every two years. So why should my not requiring a TV Licence be any different?
My friend has just sued TV licencing for return of my overpaid licence fee. They ignored his application form, then his letter before action, then his claim issued at court online (£25) and then we got default judgment against the BBC plus the £25 court fee back. They then paid but, now have a CCJ registered against them for 6 years because they were late paying the debt to me. Highly recommend it if you don't get your fee back within 1 month of asking for it. It's not difficult and its a good feeling to have the BBC as a debtor.
I did too, but have had a letter monthly for the past three years, and two suspected visits (I didn’t answer the door, I know the goons can be nasty) that I know of. Cheeky buggers, sat on my driveway in their car for 20 minutes. I checked the reg number of one and it was registered in Chelmsford, Capita’s tv licensing base.

Get your mobile out and start recording and tell them that you are recording them to use as evidence, they will say it is illegal, not when they are are standing on your doorstep, your property, then watch them walk away
Good info here mate. TVL have had me under investigation for 15 years and i cant tell you how many times they have been left on my doorstep. I watch my CCTV , its so funny.
Here's a thought... When one of these letters are received, what would happen if we make a Freedom of Information request for all the info they 'allegedly' have on us?? They have 28 days to legally respond.. (unless.of course, the law has changed). This will cost them and keep them tied up, causing them problems. Just a thought... Hehe
Some flaws with that idea. 1. You would have to provide them with information that will confirm your identity (thus giving them an actual name rather than 'occupier'. 2. They can claim the information is subject to legal privilege under section 10 of PACE. In balance they would gain more than they lost.
What makes me laugh is, in the letter about a visit, it says:- The information below explains the procedure. *You may refer to it during a visit from the Officer* . So I'm allowed to look at a letter, while in my own home? You learn something new every day. 🤣
well if you want to get really technical, it is impossible to actually watch something 'live as it's being broadcast'... there is a time delay between the image popping onto the screen and the image reaching your eyes.
So far, I have had *27* letters, with a red header containing the words "your property" and "investigation". They're just variations on the one you're referring to.
Sound advice. No chats, no interraction, nothing, zilch, zero, nuffin. Just move them on, send them home fully aware of just what a pointless existence they live. I stopped paying over 15 years ago, maybe 20 or more. I have saved thousands of pounds. Have been visited, did answer the first couple of times but never engaged in coversation, just closed the door, I dont even answer the door these years, no idea if they still call. Lots of letters, I usually write on them 'Details enclosed' and drop them back in the postbox to return to sender, so they have to pay Royal Mail to recieve their own letters back, love the irony. They must have spent thousands of the TV Licence payers money to try and get money out of me, and long may it continue.
Wouldn't it be great if ITV or similar terrestrial channel did a programme like Chilli's - giving those poor souls who feel beholden to the BBC a glimmer of hope!
So basically they are scammers, so if you know how to handle them, keep them busy so they don't have time to harass someone who feels threatened by them.

I used to have a little printed notice beside my doorbell that said "TV Licence agents: since you do not believe what we say, we do not choose to speak to you. Please use your electronic detection devices and do not disturb us". They never did, though they would keep up the letters, and occasionally the notice would vanish, which I suppose meant that one of them had taken it away as evidence. Eventually I got a letter that said wtteo "Oh, all right, since you say you don't need a licence we'll leave you alone for a while" even though I hadn't in fact said that; but that was years ago, and I haven't heard from them since.
I cancelled mine last year March. I emailed & telephoned re cancelling, I even got a refund. My so called licence only officially expired Feb this year yet I have received the harassment letters since May last year?! .... I'm so angry, I feel like emailing/writing etc again but even more annoyed that I have to chase this or carry on worrying about it.... Now when they come through the door, they go straight in the recycling.
Hi Jon, atm we have only had emails saying we are late paying blah blah, but I intend to RETURN TO SENDER if or when we get post from them! i did this with all our junk mail and not sure if its coincidence, but we havent had any junk mail :D . Any thoughts?
I have a " no license needed confirmation" valid until September 2022, TV licensing have just started with the " gentle reminder" notices and apparently I have until the 10th March to respond and if I don't my address will be passed on to the Enforcement Division for Investigation. Needles to say I'm ignoring them😁

Idea for future video: Refunds, how much you can get and the legitimate reasons you can have for claiming them.

You can get a refund on your licence as you pay in advance. I got 78 quid back when I cancelled mine.

There's no actual investigations going on behind the scenes, these letters are all computer generated and carefully designed and worded to scare people into paying up. Eventually a list of addresses might get emailed out to the door knockers but that's about it.
Chilli posted something the other day stating that Capita spent around £7 million on sending these letters out last year.
it may say 7 million but you can easy work out it has to be double that for letter and envelope costs etc.
but one thing we don't work out with number of letters sent out how many go to the same person over and over.

I was a licence free over 75 for about 5 months when they changed their minds, now they want me to start paying again. 3 reminders so far. I haven't answered any. I was thinking of returning the next one marked "moved to nursing home" would that foil them?

It might be worth mentioning in your next video how TV retailers effectively "grass" on their customers by passing their details to the licensing people. I have been party to this underhanded practice.

The Communications (Television Licensing) Regulations 2004 (as amended), states that you need to be covered by a TV Licence if you:
· Watch or record programmes as they’re being shown on TV on any channel
· Watch or stream programmes live on an online TV Service (such as ITV Hub, All4, UA-cam, Amazon Prime Video, Now TV, Sky Go etc)
· Download or watch any BBC programmes on iPlayer
This applies to any device you use, including a TV, desktop computer, laptop, mobile phone, tablet, games console, digital box or DVD/VHS recorder.
If a video cassette recorder, a DVD recorder or a colour television is used, whether separately or together, a Colour TV Licence is required. The use of a television as a monitor solely for computer/video games does not need a TV Licence.
If you watch or record live TV programmes as they're being shown on TV or download or watch BBC programmes on iPlayer live, catch up or on demand, you need to be covered by a TV Licence. However, if you don’t do either of these, please let me know. I will then make sure our records are changed to show you do not need a licence. One of our Visiting Officers may visit your home to check that you are not watching or recording live TV programmes as they're being shown on TV or downloading or watching BBC programmes on iPlayer live, catch up or on demand.

Note that you can still use the BBC iPlayer to listen to their radio channels.
It’s only TV programmes that are prohibited.
Also you can watch TV on a battery powered device (portable TV or laptop/iPad) that is NOT connected to a plug in aerial or power socket if you have a TV licence for your main residence.
So students using iPlayer on a battery powered device are fine if their parents have a TV licence.

@@PooleAcademyofWingChun As I understand it watching someone doing a live steam from their bedroom nattering about how they paint their nails or whatever is perfectly legal without a licence. They are not TV stations, it is only if you are watching a live stream on UA-cam of a live TV program , such as some TV news bulletins such as the American NTD . Of course the BBC are deliberately not clear on this so they can con people into thinking you need a licence for UA-cam whereas in reality this is a very niche area 99.999 % UA-cam no licence needed.

Just been reading about the TV license and according to them, they say less than 2% of people only watch catch up services (thus not needing a TV licence). In this day and age of catch up/streaming, I find that percentage hard to believe 😅

i had a funny line when i cancelled my tv licence - asking if how i watch tv will change in the future there was NO mention of 2 years nor anyone visiting at any time.
i plain and simple said i do not watch live tv broadcast and don't use iplayer and want to cancel and it was so,, I AM GOD, and it was good.
I told them I wanted a refund since i paid whole year so no direct debit. and was told form on website or we can send you one.

Me too, no drama, no visits in > 15 years.
Whilst I agree in principle, why should anyone have to? I don't have to tell Sky or Amazon Prime that I don't require them biannually. I don't have to declare that I still don't need a gun licence every two years. So why should my not requiring a TV Licence be any different?

My friend has just sued TV licencing for return of my overpaid licence fee. They ignored his application form, then his letter before action, then his claim issued at court online (£25) and then we got default judgment against the BBC plus the £25 court fee back. They then paid but, now have a CCJ registered against them for 6 years because they were late paying the debt to me. Highly recommend it if you don't get your fee back within 1 month of asking for it. It's not difficult and its a good feeling to have the BBC as a debtor.

I did too, but have had a letter monthly for the past three years, and two suspected visits (I didn’t answer the door, I know the goons can be nasty) that I know of. Cheeky buggers, sat on my driveway in their car for 20 minutes. I checked the reg number of one and it was registered in Chelmsford, Capita’s tv licensing base.

Get your mobile out and start recording and tell them that you are recording them to use as evidence, they will say it is illegal, not when they are are standing on your doorstep, your property, then watch them walk away
Good info here mate. TVL have had me under investigation for 15 years and i cant tell you how many times they have been left on my doorstep. I watch my CCTV , its so funny.
I am 45 and never bought a licence in my life and despite hundreds of letters have never had the pleasure of a visit. I feel gutted and jealous. 👍🏻

Here's a thought... When one of these letters are received, what would happen if we make a Freedom of Information request for all the info they 'allegedly' have on us?? They have 28 days to legally respond.. (unless.of course, the law has changed). This will cost them and keep them tied up, causing them problems.

Some flaws with that idea. 1. You would have to provide them with information that will confirm your identity (thus giving them an actual name rather than 'occupier'. 2. They can claim the information is subject to legal privilege under section 10 of PACE.
In balance they would gain more than they lost.

well if you want to get really technical, it is impossible to actually watch something 'live as it's being broadcast'... there is a time delay between the image popping onto the screen and the image reaching your eyes.

So far, I have had *27* letters, with a red header containing the words "your property" and "investigation".

I stopped paying over 15 years ago, maybe 20 or more. I have saved thousands of pounds. Have been visited, did answer the first couple of times but never engaged in coversation, just closed the door, I dont even answer the door these years, no idea if they still call. Lots of letters, I usually write on them 'Details enclosed' and drop them back in the postbox to return to sender, so they have to pay Royal Mail to recieve their own letters back, love the irony. They must have spent thousands of the TV Licence payers money to try and get money out of me, and long may it continue.
Has anyone thought about doing an environmental impact study on wasted paper by BBC trying to chase the license fee?

So basically they are scammers, so if you know how to handle them, keep them busy so they don't have time to harass someone who feels threatened by them.
When you buy a new video recorder or TV thats how they get you too. Buy second hand always from a person not shops.

Recently gone over to Netflix ..pulled out tv areal and chucked it out !.
I used to have a little printed notice beside my doorbell that said "TV Licence agents: since you do not believe what we say, we do not choose to speak to you. Please use your electronic detection devices and do not disturb us". They never did, though they would keep up the letters, and occasionally the notice would vanish, which I suppose meant that one of them had taken it away as evidence.
Eventually I got a letter that said wtteo "Oh, all right, since you say you don't need a licence we'll leave you alone for a while" even though I hadn't in fact said that; but that was years ago, and I haven't heard from them since.

I cancelled mine last year March. I emailed & telephoned re cancelling, I even got a refund. My so called licence only officially expired Feb this year yet I have received the harassment letters since May last year?! .... I'm so angry, I feel like emailing/writing etc again but even more annoyed that I have to chase this or carry on worrying about it.... Now when they come through the door, they go straight in the recycling.

I have a " no license needed confirmation" valid until September 2022, TV licensing have just started with the " gentle reminder" notices and apparently I have until the 10th March to respond and if I don't my address will be passed on to the Enforcement Division for Investigation. Needles to say I'm ignoring them😁
