  • Made a quick carving mallet from an old oak (I think) branch my mom brought over years ago. This is for my buddy Dominic Benders (goo.gl/ODlHJs) "Challenge Tree 2017".

      yeah I have several bowls and handles etc. under my belt now, and I can see improvement with each project, but i've still got a lot to learn.

      Thanks! I've really been needing one and the challenge tree contest was the perfect reason to make it.

    Nice mallet. I like the rustic character.
    I've had bad luck with making mallets from logs like this. It almost always splits because the pith is included. I hope this works out for you nonetheless.

      Yeah fingers crossed! This wood has been drying in my shed for about probably 5+ years, and the ends still had no checking, so i think it will be ok, but time will tell. if it does ever develop a split I can always fill it with epoxy or just make a new one I suppose.

    Very Very Nice I Love The Finish Not All Shiny And Fancy just pretty enough to beat on stuff without being cautious

      @TabLeft  7 років тому

      Yeah I figured there was no point it making it too pretty since i'm gonna beat on it. this is also a bit of an experiment to see if making a mallet with the pith in will eventually crack.

    My grizzly lathe seems similar to yours. I remove the arm from the tool rest base and just put the tool rest itself in the base. Much sturdier.

    Nice job. I'm fairly new to woodworking. Just curious if there is an important reason that carving mallets are cylindrical as opposed to flat.

      Jim L I think it's that many carvers grasp the head of the mallet rather than the handle for better control, but I've seen both used very successfully. I'm new to carving as well and I'm honestly not positive. Carving mallets are more for bumping the chisel with a small controlled tap rather than swinging the mallet with more force like you might a jointers mallet. But that's just my guess.

      That sounds logical to me. Thanks for the info. Looking forward to your next project.

    Isn't it better to not have heartwood in the center? Just curious. I thought that the heartwood was a weak spot that might make it snap in use, assuming you really pounded hard with it. It looks awesome though!

    • @TabLeft

      Generally yes but this is really old wood and shows no significant sign of checking so i think it "probably" safe. I think the pith issue tends to be more a problem in large logs from the trunk of a tree. This is branch wood and seems pretty dense even at the heart, that being said time will certainly tell, but worst case is i just make a new one, and i never trust anything until i try it myself =)

      Yep. In most cases, it's not the tool that determines quality...it's the operator. :-)
