The String Cheese Incident rules. They blew my mind, playing continuously for hours. Morphing one style to the next seamlessly. I thought I was hearing 15 different bands on the stage over the course of the evening.
They play Shoe Fest in Illinois a lot. Old Shoe throws it, and I've worked security at that show before. It's just outside of Kankakee, IL, at a boy scout camp lodge. Very chill, 3 day event.
It never occurred to me that Dead fans would hate Touch of Gray, but I can totally see that happening. I don’t know of any Rush fan that hates Tom Sawyer. Maybe a little upset that it’s the only track you will here on the radio (I hear Freewill and Limelight too), but never hate.
Gooooooseeee! 🤘 Also Phish might not get much radio play, but I love it when they pop on sports broadcasts. Every once in a while MLB will play little Phish and/or other jam band clips when they’re going to or coming back from commercials.

The fun is you can ALWAYS get better… The reward is a memory full of truly magical moments on stage (or even in practice) where you and the people you are playing with are connected in a way that you simply can’t do in any other way. If you’ve ever been in a good, even decent, ‘jam band’, you know what I mean… not to be cheesy, but you’ll always ‘know’ those guys… they’ll always ‘know’ you… in a way very few ever will.

I hope everyone who watches this goes and looks up Goose if they have not already heard them. Amazing band with an incredible library of live soundboard releases and live videos on UA-cam.
What he said at 11:33. So true. Jam bands are the future extension of a bunch of folks on the porch doing their thing on acoustic instruments while their friends family and neighbors are all around them interacting.
Perfect description of an acoustic jam I went to last weekend. Lots of folks we all went to school with were in town (we have an annual town reunion called Homecoming each summer. It was great. I’m not a sit around all evening and gab kind of person, so music allows me to socialize in the way that’s most comfortable for me.
I just moved to Colorado. We have Cowboys Dead, Dead Floyd, Dead Phish, Yonder Mountain String Band, String Cheese Incident, etc. Colorado is the Jam Band State
I don't know that I'd have stuck with guitar had I not started listening to the Dead and Phish when I was a teenager. Jonathan is right about the old way of playing with people hanging out and participating as best they could. Music should always involve participation. Live music does that best. I love hanging out at local open mic nights and jam nights. Meet people, play if you are a player, hang out and have fun with musicians and the audience if one is present. They are usually very spontaneous and interactive and a lot of fun for everyone there. Today sadly for many if not most, music is just an APP on a device. Instead of a way to connect to other people and share the music and the spirit and emotions it can bring. Music is no longer taught as much in schools and is not part of the lives of many, it is just a disposable commodity. Add to that the cost of entry for an instrument can be very high to many families and lessons are an even greater luxury. Most working adults don't have the time, energy and motivation required to learn a new instrument. The current economy is making that even worse for most. No surprise so many people are isolated and angry, with little human connections and no outlet for their feelings to be expressed otherwise. Except to lash out on a screen at others. Or in the streets. As an official Old Guy (tm) it is easy to observe. Go to almost any public place and all you see are craned necks of people staring at a screen in their hand. No looking around, no talking, no interaction except occasional semiblind bumping and Brownian movement in the mass. (Look it up, for those who were never taught basic science!). Absolutely no situational awareness. Your morning episodes are a fun bright spot when I think about all of that. You make me want to reach for an instrument.
