M5 Matched Pair in ORTF Placement: Recording A Choir

- Featuring the M5 Matched Pair to demonstrate different stereo applications, we recorded the Sydney Philharmonia Choirs at their rehearsal space in The Rocks, Sydney.
Using the RØDE Stereo Bar, the M5 microphones were placed in the ORTF configuration due to the size of the choir and the space. The microphones were placed 17cm apart and spread to a 110˚ angle with help from the Stereo Bar's mounting guide & markings.
The RØDE Stereo bar will be released in early 2014.

at first I thought it was my itunes app playing Bogoroditse..... what a great piece, perfect for testing since it has such a dynamic range in volume.... BRAVO!! (to the choir)

You didn't anticipate there being a 35dB SPL difference between the softest and loudest points of Rachmaninoff's "Bogoroditse Devo"? Anyway, great-sounding mics, for less than half the cost of NT5s. A great pair for a home studio or smaller church choir.
I didn´t like the loud parts. Maybe it was too close to clipping - I don´t know. They sounded pretty strained.
Great Video, the room is a bit dry to my taste... what would be great having a decca-tree, ORTF, MS-stereo + Double-MS-surround + 3D-ORTF comparison in one acoustically great room with an orchestra, a chamber orchestra, a choir and soloist singers and musicians. :-)
Hey Justin, no plans to introduce active noise cancelling for this unit at the moment, instead we recommend you do this in post-production for the best results! The GainAssist feature works well with every device you can use the Wireless PRO with, so yes, it will work amazingly with your iPhone 15 💪
Beautiful!!! My choir group is only 20 people. I don’t know anything about mic-ing or anything. But this Sunday, for the first time, I’ll use 1 mic to record. I’ll be using the Shure MV51. I’ve been watching here in UA-cam for tips.

To me this sounds like there’s no eq to balance up the loss of bass due to the negative proximity - I’d bet these mics are flat at around 30-100 cm, but this is way beyond that. Any directional mic needs compensation for distance micing.
That was super epic! What recorder did you guys use? I've heard of the ortf setup from a friend Neal Ewers. He does it with KM140s. But this was way cool.
It sounds very nice, but it's always difficult to manage the sibilant consonants.
How can we not hear that fan running in the background?
He recorded the fan into another stereo track and then flipped the phase of that track ;)

OTRF Technique is good at reducing background ambient noise.

Will this microphones and the ORTF configuration work to record a 16 voice choir? I'm really planning on buying these mics, but I need to know what configuration I can use to record my choir.

Is there any signal processing? Compression, EQ? Is that just the raw two channel from the hard disc recorder?
I expect this is edited for days. This is, after all, an advert, so they're going to make it sound as good as possible.

i just got my hands on these and a zoom h8. I'm a beginner with ears and would like to record our churc choir. Where would you put the gain for the loudest peaks for a choir please? I was under the impression that i should aim for -1dB but others say -10 ish. Thanks! Nice music though :)
Hey there @deadmikehun, the ideal peak gain levels while using the M5 will really depend on the device you're using, in this case the H8. We can't really say what the best settings would be on that device as we don't make it, however the best gain settings when recording are usually between -6 and -12db, as this will give you headroom for dynamics, so that your recording doesn't distort, while also being able to capture quieter parts of your recording as well. Ultimately you may need to experiment for yourself in order to find out!
Thanks@@rodemic, I managed to nail the gains the recordings came out awesome, only minor EQ and reverb was needed. The mics sound really good and the noise floor is surprisingly low! Glad I went with these mics.
I have bought a MP of M5, the stereo-bar and a mic stand . I have 2 question (as being a newbee on this area): 1: what are the pan-settings for the mics in this setup? hard left and hard right or...? 2: the mic positioned on the left of the stereobar is pointing to the right.. so this is the mic for the right (allthough it is positioned left on the stereo bar) and vice versa? I appologise for my noob-level questions :)

What about phasing issues?
+lasher500 using the Stereo Bar allows you to easily position the mics with the correct mic placement to minimise any phase issues.
Remember it's a "stereo take" mic placement, so from the beginning, before recording you've to decide the method you are going to use:
ORTF, NOS, A/B ... are not mono-compatible.*
XY and Mid-Side are mono-compatible.
* It depends on the arrival times.
* Sometimes the Pain Effect it's not that disgusting (but you have to analyse that before starting the actual takes)
If the media it is recorded for is people who use always stereo speakers, you do not care about phase issues. (You can look after low frequency issues only for the 2.1 speaker systems.)
If you're going to bring this to the radio, then you have to think about them.
