Superb video. I know nothing about production, so this was highly informative. Everything you share is excellent. I can’t believe anyone would take you to task for production values (correct term?) that are commonly used these days. You music is ALWAYS a delight to listen to. Well done!
This was super fun to watch! And it definitely wasn't you not explaining well enough in the video you showed at the beginning, a bunch of people just suck. Thanks for the awesome content!
Whenever people ask me one of my secrets I always say different locations. If you have the ability, drag the microphone into your bathroom and do a track or two in there, then maybe with you in the bathroom and the microphone outside the door. Do one inside a wardrobe (or similar space) with coats hanging up, then do one in your living room with the windows open (fun for all the neighbours!) it can make mixing a bit of a pain, but it really can add something to have a lot of different ambient noise and natural reverb in there, as long as it isn't completely out of control. I know the trend nowadays is for recording as dead a sound as possible and then adding digital reverb but remember that some of the greats did things like recording in big hallways or putting microphones at the bottom of a stairwell and the drum kit playing at the top, and those made for awesome records.
and now I know why the upstairs neighbours in my last apartment would record parts of their music in the bathroom sometimes.... It always hella annoyed me because they often did it at night, but at least now I know why. :D
Supposedly Frank Sinatra sang into one microphone which was recorded. And at the same time had that come out of a speaker in a room with only a microphone that was also recording. Giving a slight delay. Now the crazy part. He had the room painted multiple different ways to get the sound right.
In my opinion the whisper track is a GAME CHANGER!!!! I really didn't think about it, but it makes it feel so "real" and "full" ! Loved the video Malinda!!!
I started recording a year ago, so I'm still learning stuff. "Doing characters" is something I figured out on my own, but flamming and whisper tracks seem counterintuitive and I would never have come up with that on my own. I think both of those are what my recordings are missing and I'm definitely going to add that for future recordings.
Could you please help me explain what she means at 6:50 with "exporting it"? I make advanced music on the computer since 10-15 years back and I've already discovered flamming and duplicating and panning by myself, but what is exporting? I can't have 8-12 tracks of just the choir, my computer thinks it's too much to handle at once. Does exporting mean you join the regions into one? How? I use Garageband and have no one to ask due to mental illness and isolation.
@@outlanderfrog Could you please explain what that means in other words? As a non-native speaker I don't understand in this context what bounce or export means. I've even studied English at uni, but not music or computer terms. I have decided to record four voices in different tracks and different panning, then I mark the recordings and "join" (command-J) them into one track. I then duplicate the joined recording and put as two tracks with different panning to give more stereo-sound. Is this what she means? I have no one to ask...
@@SamirCCat sorry you keep getting ghosted, I'm not necessarily confident in this but I think joining them would end in the exact same result. exporting is what you do when you are done with a song and say, go to upload it to youtube. the computer processes all the files and basically ends up joining all of the audio data into one single file, instead of the many it started with, so you do this with the multiple files you recorded to begin with, then take the one file the computer sort of "spit out" from "chewing it all up" (lol), put it back in your audio software two times so you have two of the exact same master file, and then pan them. Let me know if this helps, I'm not very good at explaining stuff but I would hate to see you left without a satisfying explanation, even after a year haha
Great video. When you brought up the claps and shifting them slightly, it reminded me of how Brian May and Queen recorded the "Stomp, Stomp, Clap" section of "We Will Rock You" - adjusting the timing of multiple recordings of just the four of them so that it sounded more like a thousand. Again, great job with this and all your work.
So amazing as always which is why Malinda is such a muse! It'd be a joy if Malinda did an arrangement of The Highwayman and Henry Martin since she'd bring her flare and style to them making both epic.

As an enthusiast producer, I was debating recording a real choir, but this is so good, I will link you to when the album drops using your technique Thank you so much xx

I love writing music and have done it for 20 years. Due to my illnesses I can't work, but I'm very musical and I record on the computer. I do everything myself, all the singing and all instruments, but the technical parts about recording is difficult for me when I don't know anything about computers and have no one to ask. Due to my disability I live a very isolated life, but I wish to create my own youtube channnel with my music and lyrics, but I need to get better at recording first. I think all your fans, no matter if writing their own music or not, would appreciate seeing behind the scenes and how recording is done.
I love your voice! You're an amazing person!

This video was made for me!! I’m recording a song and making myself a choir AS WE SPEAK! Thanks!!! 😁
very awesome Malinda
The further I watched this video, the more my jaw dropped. It is SO amazing and awesome. I have seen such single person choirs and always wondered how on earth is it done. Love your music and think you have a super awesome voice
I've done these techniques as well as applying a chorusing or ADT filter (I use Waves' Abbey Road ADT plugin) to help double up and cause subtle pitch shifts to the tracks.
As an enthusiast producer, I was debating recording a real choir, but this is so good, I will link you to when the album drops using your technique
Thank you so much xx
This was so fun to watch. I tried it immediately and the result surprised me :) Thanks for the tips
You are so talented. I wish I had even just a small amount of your talent.
That pitch trick is tight, goodshit.
Wow!! That sounds sooo good!
"Try it all out yourself!" Oh hell no. But i love listening to people who actually put in the effort to learn to sing, like you, who makes incredible music.
